Luther College operates two educational campuses in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada – a historical independent high school and a post-secondary campus, federated with the University of Regina.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR,

KARL TIEFENBACH Dear Luther friends and supporters.

Few dared to whisper a year ago that we would be in the throes of a fourth COVID-19 wave today, and yet here we are. While much of our pre-pandemic life remains on pause, there are signs of hope and change all around us.

Sure, the schedule of online meetings seems relentless at times but let us be thankful that vaccines are available and effective.

It’s been a year of adjustments, with evolving COVID restrictions and protocols, a new President (at Luther, and south of the border) and, for some, adjusting to the loss of a loved one or perhaps living with long-COVID symptoms. The world needs positive and supportive communities now more than ever. Luther College strives to be such a community in these difficult times.

President Marc Jerry has displayed his pastoral gifts to countless individuals during his first year at Luther. Many students, staff, faculty, regents and others have experienced his upbeat and compassionate nature during this time when it seems that every issue is polarized.

Marc’s gifts have meshed well with the Board’s recognition of its stewardship and oversight responsibilities relating to Human Resources (HR). Jodi Kydd has been appointed Luther’s first full-time HR Manager and a Board committee, headed by Vice-Chair Janet Bjorndahl, was struck to review progress and support the work in this area.

The Board and President have jointly initiated a review of the mission, vision, values of the College. The purpose is not a change in direction but rather a clarification of what those things means to Luther and to the public. We are discussing our values and vision for the College overall, as we move into our Vision 2025 strategic planning process in this next year. This is difficult work – building consensus is even harder. More discussion and consultation with the Luther community will occur over the next months.

At last October’s AGM long-serving regents Murray Knuttila and Jeff Christiansen completed their terms on the Board. Luther is richer due to their service and faithfulness. Two new Regents were welcomed – LCHS alumna Marie Digney and LCHS parent Jim Vandeboncouer.

A word of thanks to my fellow regents for their support during my term as Chair. Without you and your dedication to Luther, this job would have been impossible. And best wishes for success to Greg Swanson who took over the chair as of July 1. Greg has served as Corporate Secretary for many years and will do an admirable job.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT,

REV. DR. MARC JERRY This past 2020-2021 academic year was nothing short of eventful for my first year as your president. After joining the college in the early stages of an active global pandemic, 2020-2021 has principally been about keeping our Luther College community healthy and well above all else.

At the University, we ran our operations largely remotely for the entire academic year. Classes were delivered online and many of our services: finance, academic advising, etc. were also delivered remotely. Our residence, housekeeping, maintenance, and food services remained open under the SHA covid protocol guidelines. We took the opportunity during the classroom building closure to complete some much-needed capital projects (HVAC, classroom upgrades, etc.) in order to be ready for a full return to in-person activities. Alas, the pandemic is not over as we had hoped it might be by the fall of 2021, and so our university campus continues its operations with a gradual return to the workplace process – all with the intent of keeping our community safe as the pandemic rages on.

At the High School, 2020-2021 operated largely in person with many COVID restrictions: physical distancing, sanitizing, entrance temperature checks, plexiglass dividers in classrooms, numbered locker assignments, and the like. We also had to use the Merlis Belsher Heritage Centre as an overflow cafeteria space with assigned seating to allow for additional distancing and easier contact tracing. Most of the public co-curricular activities did not run, and we had to adapt our technology to allow for some hybrid (online and in-person teaching). Unlike other school divisions, we maintained our academic rigour by maintaining a normal semester schedule as well as still running our examinations as usual. In the end, we still successfully graduated our grade 12 class and held our first-ever, COVID safe, outdoor convocation ceremony on the front lawn of the school, in front of our historic 1926 old main building. As vaccinations continue to rise, we are hopeful that a more normal return to activities in the high school will continue in the fall of 2021.

Our Board of Regents formed an ad hoc committee and much work was done to offer consultation and review of our vision mission values statements in preparation for the writing of our Vision 2025 strategic plan in this coming year. The board is also continuing its work on moving towards a policy governance structure, and Karl Tiefenbach ended his term as chair to be replaced by Greg Swanson, an experienced lawyer here in Regina.

Fundraising continues to be important for the financial health of the College. Last year’s appeals were focused on our COVID-19 fund to help offset the costs of the preventative measures used to keep our students safe. It is also important to note that Luther ended the pandemic year in a strong financial position: we are proud to be good stewards of our resources and of the gifts of our donors.

We would not be able to do this without your generous support.

While the waiting for the pandemic to end is getting tiring, there is still much to be hopeful for, as our work continues as an educational ministry that produces graduates who will be an important part of the healing of the world to come. I am proud of our students, and indeed our team who continue to work hard to make the “magic” of Luther continue.

May our prayers for healing and a return to health in our world be heard.

GOVERNANCE The highest governance authority at Luther College, Regina is invested in its Board of Regents.

Regents are elected for a maximum of two 4-year terms and generously donate their time and effort to guide the mission and values of Luther College.

BOARD OF REGENTS CHAIR KARL TIEFENBACH (HS’73, U’76)

Karl is retired from a 32-year career in petroleum refining at the Co-op Refinery Complex in Regina. Karl previously served on the Luther College Board of Regents from 2003-2013, including Chair from 2008-2012. He is an alumnus of the High School and University. Karl’s wife Kathy and their children Rick, Sarah, Taylor and Joey are also Luther College alumni. Karl’s father, Arnold Tiefenbach, was a long-time faculty member from 1949-1969.

VICE CHAIR JANET BJORNDAHL (U’79)

Janet is retired from the IT industry, having specialized in database design and data protection.

Janet has served on church boards and committees and as congregational treasurer. She is an alumna of Luther College at the University of Regina with a double major in Mathematics and Computational Science.

TREASURER DARYL NELSON

Now retired, Daryl held various senior management positions with Farm Credit Canada, including Director of Enterprise Information Management. Daryl has a Bachelor of Administration Degree and a Chartered Professional Accountant designation. He has previous Board experience with the Royal Regina Golf Club (including a term as President), Saskatchewan Country Music Association, among others. His daughter Amy is an alumna of the University.

CORPORATE SECRETARY GREG SWANSON

Greg is a retired lawyer after spending his 40-year career practicing law. Greg is a graduate of the University of Regina (B. Admin) and earned his LLB from the University of Saskatchewan. He has previous board experience with the University of Regina Senate, the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, and the Scandinavian Club of Regina, among others.

ROBERT DAVIS (HS’04)

Robert earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Regina and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Currently, Robert is the Vice President, Treasury at Conexus Credit Union. He is a former assistant coach of the Luther Lions Senior Boys basketball team, and an alumnus of the High School.

BOARD OF REGENTS MARIE DIGNEY (HS’11)

Marie is a lawyer and holds her Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan, College of Law with a Certificate in French Common Law from the University of Ottawa. She also has a Baccalauréat en Éducation and Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of Regina. She currently serves on the board of the Canadian International Council and is Vice Chair of the Canadian Bar Association Saskatchewan Students South Section. Marie is an alumna of the High School.

BETH DROZDA (HS’84, U’87)

Beth is a Senior Human Resources Consultant with Access Communications. She has a Bachelor of Arts in French and Religious Studies, a Human Resources Advanced Certificate, and her Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation. She has been a member of the Luther Bach Choir since 1989, and is a Board member of the Access Communications Children’s Fund. She is an alumna of both the High School and the University.

LEE ELLIOTT

Lee has his MBA from the University of Regina and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan as well as a C.Dir. designation from McMaster University. Lee is the owner and CEO of End of the Roll Flooring in Regina. He is also a lecturer in Finance and Entrepreneurship at the University of Regina. Lee’s son Ryan is an alumnus of the High School and his daughter Kathryn is a current student.

LAUREL GARVEN (HS’06)

Laurel is the Vice President, Business Strategy at ISC, a company that provides registry and information management services. Laurel received her Postgraduate Diploma in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Oxford, an Honours Business Administration degree from Western University, and a Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Regina.

She also holds a Professional Director certification. Laurel is an alumna of the High School.

DARANNE HARRIS (HS’95)

Rev. Harris is pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Calgary. Daranne is ordained by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and graduated with a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary. She is a former Pastor at Hope Lutheran Church in Calgary, AB, and was the Vice President of Bethany Care Society. Daranne is an alumna of the High School.

Helga has a professional background in facilitation, communications, and management. She currently operates Helga Hein Communication & Facilitation Services. She also serves on the University of Regina Alumni Association Board, and served previously on the Luther College Board of Regents from 2004-2008. She has a Bachelor of Administration from the University of Regina and is an alumna of the High School.

BOARD OF REGENTS JODY HILDERMAN

Jody is a Professional Engineer with PMP (Project Management Professional), and CMRP (Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional) designations. She is currently working as a Senior Mine Manager for Mosaic Potash. Jody attended the University campus, and previously served as an Elder on the Board at Christ Lutheran Church in Regina.

VICTORIA MWAMASIKA

Victoria is currently the Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Weyburn, SK, with a Master of Divinity degree. She has previous board experience with LCBI and is the Chaplain of the Weyburn Branch No. 47 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Victoria graduated from a Lutheran high school and university in Tanzania and has experience with Lutheran institutions in Africa.

DWIGHT NELSON

Dwight is currently President & COO of Carewest Innovative Health Care in Calgary, AB. Previously, he was President & CEO of the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region for 12 years. He is a Chartered Accountant and Certified Health Executive with 35 years of management experience in financial services and public sector administration. Both his children attended Luther College’s high school and university campuses.

JIM VADEBONCOEUR

Jim is a Certified Professional Accountant, Certified Management Accountant. He has a 31-year accounting career and is currently the Accounting Manager at the Co-op Refinery Complex in Regina, SK. Two of his children, Abby and Luke, are High School alumni and his daughter Megan is a current student.

ANDREA WAGNER (HS’85, U’90, U’94)

Andrea has a Master in Public Administration, and is currently a Corporate Strategy & Sustainability Consultant at SaskPower. She brings previous Board experience with the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Planned Parenthood Regina, and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Andrea has an interest in governance, strategy, organizational development and change.

OPERATING HIGHLIGHTS The work of both campuses over the 2020-2021 year falls within five categories: maintaining fiscal sustainability, ensuring world class organizational performance, supporting people, developing strategy, and making connections.

A few key actions from the year are highlighted here.

TRC

Luther College is committed to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the need for educational institutions to embrace the indigenization strategy in a meaningful way. The University has an active indigenization committee headed by Dr. Brenda Anderson. At the High School, several chapel presentations honoured the memories of those whose graves were recently discovered.

Luther’s Indigenization Committee at the University campus initiated a series of events designed to encourage further thought and conversation on reconciliation. The first event was “Engaging our Spirit” with Elder Lorna Standingready with a talking circle on ceremonies and Indigenous worldviews.

Due to the pandemic, the second event, “Engaging our Minds” with Life Speaker Dennis Omeasoo, was held virtually.

The necessity to “distance” also means that the whole world can come to chapel at the High School.

Indeed, speakers came from across North America. Retired teacher Randy Brooks led a service for Remembrance Day. Alumni Lyndsay Duncombe (HS’96) from Washington and Craig Wilson (attended 1979-1981) from New York reflected on the complexities of these times, and Molly Thomas (HS’05 & U’10) from Toronto discussed moderating the Saskatchewan leaders’ debate. Alumni who are part of “Black in Sask” spoke about racial issues here and to the south. An entire week was devoted to the recognition of L.I.T., which was canceled for the first time in history.

The search for a new Director of the Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Studies Network was completed and Colleen Strauch, B.A., MAEd. was selected as the successful candidate. The NVSSN is one of the important and unique “niches” of the LCUR campus, and rebuilding the network is one of the strategic objectives.

When COVID caused the university buildings to close and faculty and staff to work remotely, Luther’s cafeteria staff remained on campus to ensure there was no disruption to food services for students living in the Luther and the University of Regina residences. The High School cafeteria also changed their serving procedures and added a dining area in the Merlis Belsher Heritage Centre to adapt to distancing protocols.

All the Luther College maintenance staff at both campuses adapted to official health guidelines, maintained enhanced sanitation procedures, followed social distancing regulations, and worked hard to keep our facilities clean and safe.

Rev. Dr. Marc Jerry was installed as the eighth President of Luther College. The installation served as the official ceremony where he was formally conferred the responsibilities and duties of Luther College through a small, private worship service at Christ Lutheran Church in Regina, SK.

Luther partnered with the U of R and the WHL to host the WHL Eastern Conference teams over an 8-week period for a 24-game season. Key individuals in securing this opportunity were Mark Duke and Stacey Cattell with the Regina Pats (and Luther College High School alumnus and former Board Chair).

A special virtual alumni event was held for high school alumni, where President Jerry and alumnus Graeme Hepworth (HS’90) spoke about leadership in the pandemic. 80 individuals attended, and we had over 200 additional views of the recording that was distributed to alumni.

The Spring 2021 University Convocation address was once again held virtually. The Luther Medal of Distinction recipient was Annaliese Beck-McKenzie. As well, the High School graduation and baccalaureate services followed pandemic safety guidelines and included a virtual (pre-recorded) ceremony in the morning with an outside, multiple cohorts, physically distanced model for presenting diplomas to our Grade 12 graduates in the afternoon.

In consultation and co-operation with all 19 post-secondary education institutions in the province, Luther signed an agreement for a stable, multi-year funding deal for the University campus base operating grant. Although the funding is capped at 0% for each of the four years (2021-2025), it does provide the sector with significant stability and predictability in budgeting. The Province also invested a small amount of envelope money to help us look at COVID-19 recovery and future revenue generation and diversification possibilities.

Intern Pastor Diane Nokonechny joined the High School campus. This is a partnership with Pastor Sarah Dymund and Trinity Lutheran Church in Regina. Her pastoral presence has been appreciated in the community and we look forward to more opportunities for her to participate in the fall as things slowly begin to reopen. Her internship runs until March 2022.

Luther College partnered with the Saskatchewan Synod to host an event to better understand vicarious trauma, discuss the lived experience of working in a caring profession during a pandemic, and highlighted some methods to mitigate the negative effects.

The Luther College High School choirs produced their annual concerts virtually, recording a performance for the annual Candlelight Service and also the first-ever virtual Home Concert.

UNIVERSITY FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS Even though it was a pandemic year and we all taught remotely, our faculty continued to research, write, publish, and present their work, including what you see here.

GRANTS AND AWARDS Dr. Kaila Bruer (Psychology) was awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Discovery Grant of $132,500 towards her research entitled “Cognitive Mechanisms Underlying Face Recognition Memory Reports.”

APPOINTMENTS Dr. Sarah Zanette was appointed to a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Psychology.

Colleen Strauch was appointed as Director of Luther College’s Nonprofit and Voluntary Studies Sector Network (NVSSN).

SELECT PUBLICATIONS Dr. Noel Chevalier (English) published “Creative Accounting: Alternative Facts in the History of the Pirate, John Gow.” Humanities 9, no. 2 (2020).

Carla Flengeris (Library Coordinator) published “Keeping Close from a Distance: Pandemic Reflections of a Library Coordinator” in Intersections: Faith, Learning and the Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education 53, (2021).

Dr. Francesco Freddolini (Art History) published a coedited volume, Art, Mobility and Exchange in Early Modern Tuscany and Eurasia (New York: Routledge, 2020).

Dr. Volker Greifenhagen (Religious Studies) published a review of Monotheism and Its Complexities: Christian and Muslim Perspectives (2018) in Reading Religion (2021).

President Rev. Dr. Jerry published “Leadership in a Pandemic: grace filled lessons in unprecedented times” in Intersections: Faith, Learning, and the Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education 53, (2021).

Dr. Dorothy Lane (English) published “Degrees of Separation” (Review of The Lost Sister and The Far Himalaya) in Canadian Literature Quarterly 28 (2020) and “’Drilling Down’: A Review of Unravelling and I Can’t Get You Out of My Mind,” Canadian Literature 242 (2020).

Dr. Yvonne Petry (History) published a translation of a sixteenth-century French source in The Global Reformations Sourcebook: Convergence, Conversion, and Conflict. (New York: Routledge, 2021).

Dr. Barbara Reul (Musicology) co-edited the inaugural issue of Discussing Bach, focusing on “Bach and Emotion Zur Recreation des Gemüths” and edited and translated an issue of Faschiana 24 (2020) and published a review of Steven Zohn’s The Telemann Compendium (Boydell Press, 2020) entitled “Tackling Telemann,” in Early Music 25 (2020).

SELECT PRESENTATIONS Dr. Roger Petry (Philosophy) presented the keynote address, “Transforming Material Culture for Sustainable Consumption and Production” at the International Conference on Phytochemistry, Textile & Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development, hosted virtually by Moi University in Kenya.

Dr. Roger Petry participated in three presentations at the 9th RCE Virtual Conference of the Americas: “Regional Advisor for RCEs in the Americas: Update, “ “RCE Saskatchewan Mobilization through Virtual Communications and Policy Platforms” and “RCE Americas Governance Working Group Presentation.”

Dr. Yvonne Petry presented “’What do they mean by a potent man? Medical Views of Impotence in Early Modern France,” at Masculinities in the Premodern World, hosted by the University of Toronto.

Prof. Scott Wilson (English/Writing Across the Disciplines) presented “’Act like Writers Do’: Meaningful Writing Assignments for Students and Instructors” as part of the Orlene Murad Academic Discussion Series at the University of Regina.

COMMUNITY ENGAGED RESEARCH AND SERVICE Dr. Brenda Anderson (Religious Studies/Women and Gender Studies) presented “A Year after the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls: Now What?” for Amnesty International Saskatchewan. She also presented “Academic Narrative Inquiry Methodology: The Intersections and Potential for New Provincial Practices and Principles for Community Work Against Gender-Based Violence” to STOPS to Violence Collective Impact Evaluation Team.

Dr. Francesco Freddolini participated in an event at the MacKenzie Art Gallery entitled “Cocktail with the Curators” related to the exhibition The Multiple Life of Drawings, for which he was a co-curator.

Dr. Volker Greifenhagen presented “What do the Hebrew Scriptures teach us about the Interconnectedness of Humanity and all Creation?” at Stewardship of Creation: An Ecumenical Stewardship Webinar for the Season of Creation, co-hosted by the Anglican Diocese of Qu’Appelle, the Saskatchewan Synod of the ELCIC, and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina. He also presented “The Life of the Prophet Muhammad from an Academic Perspective,” at a webinar on The Life of the Prophet Muhammad hosted by the Mahmood Mosque in Regina.

Dr. Nicole Hansmeier (Biology) is part of a team of researchers from the University of Regina that is analyzing Regina wastewater streams to determine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus causing COVID-19). The data is shared with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and summaries are provided to the public. Dr. Hansmeier produced an infographic that summarizes the research findings.

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS (BOTH CAMPUSES) The last two years do not reflect normal operations for Luther College. For the 2020-2021 fiscal year, there was an increase in recognized grant and donation revenues to upgrade the University building to complete some much-needed capital projects while the campus was empty. Expenses were somewhat lower than usual, as the university operations were remote for the entire year, and most co-curricular activities at the High School either did not run or were scaled back.
