A UTUMN The season of autumn
Take out your sweaters and scarves
Where kids are rolling to the hill’s bottom,
The weather will make us starve
They will find a pile of broken leaves
From the end of September
As I also watch the weather as it deceives
To the mid of November,
Trick or treating in the night
It’s pumpkin spice season
Brings the children a fright,
At least it’s just a breeze in
It’s time to get cozy at home
This is the season of change
Since the ghosts will start to roam
Full of vibes that are strange AKSHAYA RAVI

A RYANA ’ S C ANDY A PPLES As snow continues to fall and melt, staying barely longer than my motivation to do homework, the start of our Saskatchewan autumn is official. I know that waking up before the sun may put a damper on your mood but I look at this change with optimism. Fall is filled with beautiful scenery, colourful leaves, no bugs, Halloween and weather that doesn't make you feel like you’re in Satan’s personal steam room. But, for those who are still in denial of the new season, and want to cling onto summer a little longer, this candy apple recipe is a perfect way to transport you back to those days at the summer carnival. Or, for those ready to embrace fall, there’s nothing like a nice crispy candy apple to get you into the Halloween spirit. INGREDIENTS: - 1 cup of powdered sugar - 15 skewers - 15 Apples (preferably granny smith) - 2 cups of white sugar - ¾ cup of light corn syrup (regular corn syrup
works fine though but the colour won't show up as much) - 1 cup of water - 8 cups of red food coloring (or any other colour that your heart desires)
PREPARATION: 1.
Evenly distribute the powdered sugar at the bottom of a baking tray, so that the apples don't get
stuck later on. Stick each apple with a skewer. 2.
In a medium sized pot, combine sugar, corn syrup and water. Stir occasionally as you bring to a boil. Once a candy thermometer reaches 300 F or 149 C, the hard crack stage, remove the pot of the o
o
heat and stir in colouring. If you do not have a candy thermometer, drop a small amount of the syrup into cold water and once it forms hard brittle threads it is ready. 3.
Dip the apple into the syrup, then turn it upside and rotate it to make sure it is coated evenly. Place it on the tray with the powdered sugar to harden and repeat for the rest of the apples. Try to do this quickly because you don't want the candy to harden before you finish coating your apples. ARYANA PILLAY

T HE F EAR OF C HANGE Earlier I heard a wise man say, Everything grows, it’s destined to change, Except I put that philosophy in the gray, For what he knows is just so strange, As life had been stagnant each passing day, Where there wasn't an impulse to change, Though within me, I struggled as a notion gradually unfolded, Until the thought crept over me, Our world is changing and being moulded, It is bound to occur, Nothing can be done to change the outcome, As change happens in a blur, There shouldn't be a reason to be glum, It is a lovely thing like myrrh, For if a caterpillar chooses not to change, It will never blossom into a butterfly, And a seed that refuses to change Can never grow into a flower so high, If you choose not to change, You will never know you are as pretty as a butterfly. S UMMER ’ S E ND You’re going for a walk, it's finally Autumn. The leaves are changing from a dark forest green color to a deep crimson and a burnt orange color. The chilly breeze blowing your hair out of your face. The smell is refreshing, sweet and earthy. You're relaxed and enjoying the noise of leaves crunching under your feet; where you fall into a rhythm. The cars drive by but it’s calming. You start to notice the little things, the squirrels running after each other, the birds' gentle tunes echoing throughout the streets and the sweet smell of pumpkin pie coming from the nearby pastry shop. Autumn is a big change from Summer. It’s not as hot, there are dry leaves everywhere and holidays you’re looking forward to like Thanksgiving and Halloween. As you walk through your front door, you look back towards the outside. You capture the features, in a mental image, breathing in a last breath of the chilly breeze; and then shut the door.

R EFLECTING ON THE L UTHER M USICAL (G R . 12) Hello everyone! Whether you know who I am, or are incredibly confused right now, that’s totally okay! My name is Jocelyn, and I am currently in grade twelve here at Luther. I just wanted to take the opportunity, through the Tatler theme of change and transformation, to talk about something that has in-
fluenced me so much during the last four years. From the beginning of my time here at Luther, there was always one thing that I absolutely knew I had to take part in: the musical. I remember walking into the audition room on the second day of school my grade nine year so nervous - convinced that I would somehow forget the national anthem that had been engrained in my brain since child-
hood, or that my hands would shake so hard I wouldn’t be able to read from the sheet of lines in front of me. However, despite my irrational
would never get to talk to otherwise. It has not only taught me valuable skills in music and theatre, but in time management (because let’s be honest, Luther homework never takes a break), responsibility, and kindness. I feel so incredibly lucky to be able to participate in this year’s production of “Frozen Jr.” as Elsa, and extend a big thank you to everyone who has played a part in making the musical such a joy to be in. I hope that everyone still reading my “brief” little write-up will take the opportunity to watch the musical, whether it be the Thursday dress rehearsal or an evening performance, even if you’re convinced you cannot tolerate hearing “Let it Go” another time (trust me I understand). I am certain that the dedica-

fears, and a general feeling of newness, I was immediately accepted with open arms. Even on an audition day that seems so long ago, surrounded by a group of (very talented) strangers, a part of me knew that I had found somewhere I belonged. And now, as I look back on little me, who was so incredibly happy to be tree number four in “The Wizard of Oz,” I can’t help but be thankful for the profound impact that Luther musicals have had on my life, and unfortunately, my hair. Personally, musical has been my way of giving back to the school community, allowing me to meet new friends and form lasting connections with people I
all so glad this is happening again!! And finally, as a senior currently attempting to make my mark on the Luther community, I say thank you to each and every one of you for all the support and inspiration. Seeing the talent of all the younger
grades, I know that this legacy will be left in very capable hands. I urge you all to become involved in the musical in any way you can: whether you audition to be in the cast, decide to work backstage, help with lights and sound, orchestra, etc. As I have learned since my first scary audition, there is nothing to worry about. It will most definitely be a rewarding experience!
