WHO WE ARE Luther College High School is a one-of-a-kind educational institution in the beautiful prairie city of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. We offer the grades 9 – 12 Saskatchewan curriculum and the International Baccalaureate program.

Our history began in 1913, and our legacy continues today as a historical, independent high school.

SERVICE TO OTHERS Life at Luther isn’t just about you as a student learning academics in a classroom. We also challenge you to grow as a global citizen and serve others. Our mission is to create students who are well-prepared to become leaders as caring, ethical, critically engaged people. Our chapel times and Christian Ethics classes are mandatory for all students.

Serving Near and Far S E R V I C E D AY

Our students volunteer for various projects around the community. All our students participate in the project of their choice. These can range from an outdoor clean-up crew, a book drive, volunteering at food banks and rescue missions, planning events for home-schooled children and new immigrants, to writing letters to the military.

CHRISTIAN ETHICS SERVICE TRIPS

Students enrolled in our Christian Ethics 30 class visit El Salvador. This is not your typical service trip to build a school or dig a well. Over the course of ten days, our students learn from the Salvadoran people about their lives, histories and hopes for the future. A major focus of the encounter is to reflect on the meaning of working for justice rather than working for charity.

Chapel “Unlike the vast majority of high schools across Canada—and probably around the world—we devote 20-30 minutes a day, five days a week to gathering students and employees to worship, to reflect, to broaden understandings, to be spiritually challenged or uplifted, to be entertained, or to hear of others’ accomplishments. We are given the opportunity to actively listen to both religious and non-religious viewpoints that we may or may not agree with, to grow spiritually, to think critically about what we believe and don’t believe, and to consider why we hold the views we do.”

BOARDING

LIVE & LEARN Luther College High School dorm students benefit from being part of a small, safe, closeknit residence community. This supportive environment enables students to grow both personally and in relationship with others.

Our dorm students become mature, independent, responsible and self-disciplined young people.

Most dorm rooms are double occupancy and come furnished with beds, desks and built-in closets. Washrooms are newly renovated. Resident students have access to a student lounge and wireless internet.

All meals and snacks are provided in the Luther College High School cafeteria.

The dorm program offers a variety of social activities for students such as movie nights, karaoke nights, outdoor camping, an annual ski trip, open gym time, games night and more. Host families within Regina also enrich our students’ experiences, allowing them to be fully immersed in Canadian culture by sharing in family life!

A dean of men, a dean of women and several residence assistants supervise the dorm students seven-days-a-week. A school nurse is also available to students.

When, as a family, we were searching for a boarding school we were impressed by how Luther has consistently prepared high caliber scholars for college and the challenges of life. The dorms at Luther College are a melting point of different world nationalities and cultures and we get to meet a vast array of people. I have enjoyed interacting with the other students from many different countries and backgrounds.

This has enriched my understanding of other people and made my world very “small”. For me, the best part has been the journey of self discovery. Luther has helped me to discover new abilities and a wider world and the skills I need for life, and I am sure these will come in handy when I go to university and later in my work life.”

ESL

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE SHINE TANG IS A LUTHER COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE, ORIGINALLY FROM CHINA. SHE IS NOW A STUDENT AT WESTERN UNIVERSITY IN THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE, STUDYING CONSUMER BEHAVIOR.

“Luther’s ESL program provided many opportunities for me to practice my speaking. Not only could I practice my presentation in front of my ESL tutor, but I also shared my daily life with her in my spare time. It encouraged me to talk and share my ideas actively and bravely in front of others, especially in my university lectures. I also loved the idea of the host family. It provided me more chances to visit and stay with the local families and to know more about the authentic Canadian lifestyle and culture.”

The ESL program at Luther College High School uses a three-step approach that helps to move our students from communicative confidence to autonomous learning.

The first step in our approach is our ESL Foundations program. Here, students will encounter a mixture of communication, reading/vocabulary, and writing strategies designed to improve their academic skills, as well as provide opportunities for the students to use their English conversation in natural and meaningful ways. These combinations help to instill both academic and social confidence as our students become more accustomed to the expectations of a Canadian high school environment.

The second stage of ESL development, ESL Academic, places increased emphasis on the academic skills required for high school and beyond. The students in this program will focus more on the academic reading, writing, research, and analysis skills needed to succeed in an academic environment.

This course combines an academic ESL class with a writing strategies class and one-on-one coaching. This combination helps to ensure that each student’s global and individual language needs are met.

Finally, our ESL Higher level program will help address additional reading, writing and analysis questions and concerns students may encounter in upper level courses.

These sessions are taught in a one-on-one environment where the students’ needs are tailored to their course work. Students at this level are given additional help to direct them toward finding their own answers and becoming more autonomous learners. These three steps help prepare our ESL students to work more effectively in any environment they may encounter, whether that be social or academic.

BLACK GOLD BLACK Athletics have long been a part of Luther College High School’s tradition. Luther’s athletic teams and individual athletes demonstrate passion and determination, helping to build “Lion Pride.” Student involvement in athletics promotes physical health and team spirit, and also cooperation, communication, sportsmanship and time management.

Whether you're our next athletic star or a complete novice, we've got a team for you.

Many of our sports have no cuts. Others have cuts but your odds of making the team—and getting playing time—are a lot better here than at a larger school. That's not to say Lions athletics aren't good—most of our teams have consistent winning records; our girls' soccer teams, for example, have gone to provincials for the past five years!

BLACK GOLD BOLD Students can participate in activities as diverse as their individual interests. There are many opportunities to get involved, gain valuable experience, develop sportsmanship, leadership and organizational skills, practice public speaking and performances, give back to the community through service work, or become a social activist all while helping to build school spirit.

Luther offers dozens of clubs ranging from Debate to Chess and Robotics. We’ve got whimsical clubs like the Jam club and Anime club, and more serious ones like Business club. At a school our size, you won’t be shut out of clubs that interest you, and in fact, your opportunities for leadership couldn’t be greater. Plus, you can create your own club—even as a new student!

Each year, more than 2,000 students apply to the theatre program at Ithaca College and only 16 are accepted.

Mayson Sonntag, from the Luther College Class of 2018, was one of them.

Mayson’s schedule is extremely busy at Ithaca College. It’s filled with course work, acting courses, dance training and he still has to find time to work out, eat and sleep and do homework. He credits his time as a Luther College High School student for preparing him for such a rigorous schedule. The time

management skills learned at Luther made the shift an easy and smooth one.

Mayson chose Luther College High School because he knew that he had some ambitious academic goals. He also really liked the idea of small class sizes and the opportunities in the fine arts, especially the music program. Even though he had many friends who also chose Luther, he also made new friends from all over the world. His best friends today are the people he met at Luther.

Mayson loved being part of the musicals and participating in many activities.

He was SRC president in his senior year at Luther. He enjoyed being part of the Luther Invitational tournament (LIT), an example he claims showcases the true community environment.

Josie enjoyed the independence of the art program at Luther. At the annual Fine Arts Night, Josie’s final project display was colourful and much discussed. She felt a real sense of pride in her completed works that included a denim jacket, painting and mask. She loved displaying her sketchbook for members of the Luther community.

It was a true sense of accomplishment.

Upon graduating in 2019, Josie was accepted into the Graphic Arts program at the University of the Arts London (UAL) in London, England. UAL is ranked second in the world for art and design. Her journey to UAL started when she decided that she wanted to live in Europe and she began to research art schools. She loved the thought of being in London and accepted the offer from UAL.

Josie sees herself taking full advantage of traveling Europe and the world but also wants to eventually be a Creative Director working on projects in print, video and digital.

“Going to Luther inspired me to take risks to go on to bigger things. My experiences at Luther gave me the courage to make a move to London to pursue Graphic Design at the University of the Arts.”

Academically, Josie says that the teachers at Luther are really helpful. “They really care about the students and they are invested in students’ success.”

Her favourite Luther tradition is the Luther Invitation Tournament (LIT) blitz art night. “It is such a memorable time when students are working together to get ready for the basketball tournament. Being at LIT is fun but the event also showcases the sense of community and school spirit.”

The friendships Josie has made at Luther are truly life-long. She met a diverse group of friends from all walks of life and from all over the world.

Guidance counselling provides accessible, compassionate and early intervention as well as ongoing support for teens dealing with challenging issues of adolescence.

University counselling helps students select the right university and assists with the application process. Our Academic Guidance Counsellor has a wealth of experience as an academic counsellor, mentor, and postsecondary advisor for all students, including international and IB students.

Grade 9 Study Hall helps our newest students prepare for the challenges of high school.

The nurse’s office provides health education, counseling, and health assessments of students who are ill or needing emergency care.

Tuition at Luther College High School An education is an important investment. Luther College is committed to offering bursaries and financial assistance to ensure that all Saskatchewan students have access to a Luther education regardless of financial circumstances. Luther offers over $600,000 in bursaries and financial aid. This is made possible both through the school’s financial aid budget as well as through generous donations from the Luther community.

Additional returning and graduating scholarships at Luther range from awards of a few hundred dollars to full tuition and dorm fees for four years. Each year, our students have the chance to earn over $80,000 in returning and graduating scholarships that help pay tuition costs. This ensures all otherwise qualified students can access a Luther College education.
