Welcome to the 40th season of presenting here in the magnificent Center for Faith and Life (CFL). This season continues the rich Luther College tradition of offering a diverse range of internationally and nationally acclaimed groups in a variety of performing arts.
40
October 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the dedication of the CFL and, as we look forward to celebrating this milestone, it feels appropriate to also celebrate the team of dedicated people who work behind the scenes to keep the building, and the Center Stage Series, ticking. For even a simple event to run smoothly in the CFL it takes a great deal of planning and experience. To pull off an entire Center Stage Series requires a dedicated, talented, and hardworking team. Some begin planning a performance 24–18 months in advance, some will drive hundreds of miles to collect equipment for a show, some will hang hundreds of lights and run a seemingly endless amount of cables, while some will work multiple 16-plus hour show days, not leaving until the CFL is prepared for the next event. It is also fitting to acknowledge Luther’s late president, Elwin Farwell (1963-1981). After all, it was his vision that led to the creation of a space, which now means so much to so many. I am immensely proud of the CFL team and we are all glad to share this season with you. We hope you enjoy being a part of it as much as we enjoy producing it for you.

On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside his motel room. Almost exactly 50 years later, L.A. Theatre Works brings its radio-style theatre to Decorah to imagine what may have transpired in that room the night before the assassination. King reveals his hopes, regrets, and fears, creating a masterful bridge between mortality and immortality.

Jeffery Chipps Smith, Kay Fortson Chair in European Art at the University of Texas at Austin, will present the Gerhard Marcks lecture in Art History. A world-renowned expert in art of the early modern period, Smith will speak to the issue of “Art and the Challenges of the Lutheran Reformation.”
Singing the Faith: A Reformation Hymn Festival with Marty Haugen ’73 Sunday, October 29, 2017, 4 p.m. Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall
Led by Luther alumnus and renowned composer of church music, Marty Haugen, this event celebrates the role of music, hymns, and singing in the shared work of spiritual formation, proclaiming the Gospel, and building community across generations, cultures, and traditions.
Symposium The Reformation of Everything, 1517–2017 Tuesday, October 31, 2017
What was the Reformation? How did it impact Christianity, the church, education, broader society, and culture? How has it shaped Luther College? Join the Luther community for a one-day symposium on the Reformation, its historical impact, and its continuing influence. Professor Brad Gregory of the University of Notre Dame will present the opening address, “Why the Reformation Still Matters (Whether We Want It to Or Not).” Marty Haugen ’73, renowned composer of liturgical music, will offer workshops. Faculty from across disciplines and other members of the broader Luther community will present, perform, and discuss the Reformation and its legacies.

This concert will premiere the Reformation Cantata, a work composed in honor of the Reformation Commemoration by four Luther College alumni and four current students. The program will also include a new work for concert band, jointly commissioned by a consortium of Lutheran colleges. Featured ensembles include Concert Band, Collegiate Chorale, and Cathedral Choir. All reformation events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

But when Nugget and his schoolmates are caught up in some big trouble, can Fang prove he’s a true friend by saving the day? Offered by the Norse Culinary Team The highly creative and talented chefs of the Norse Culinary Team invite you to partake in the Center Stage Dinner Series, featuring a different multi-course menu to complement each evening’s performance. Local ingredients will be used whenever possible and highlighted at each dinner. The dinners are served on campus within walking distance of the Center for Faith and Life, where the performances are held. All meals will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room on the second floor of the Dahl Centennial Union. Dinner tickets are $19 per person. Wine and beer are available for purchase. A distinctive vegan entrée (V) will be available for every meal. Special dietary needs will be accommodated as we are able; please inform the Ticket Office at time of ticket purchase (a minimum of 24 hours prior to the meal). Guests who want to sit together should designate this on the order form (or notify the Ticket Office a minimum of 24 hours prior to the meal). Luther students may use NordiCash.
