Doubling down on our culture

ur nation’s most vulnerable are not receiving what they deserve, and neither are their direct caregivers. Lutheran Services Carolinas is doubling down on culture and advocacy to address this great wrong. LSC has a strong culture in spite of two years of the pandemic and the worst labor shortage in modern history. LSC has made business decisions like wage increases and improving benefits, a priority. Most teammates work at LSC for our

mission and for the love of our residents and clients. LSC is capitalizing on that through teaching The LSC Way — how to care the way our best teammates care. That includes all 1,800 teammates being better leaders and supervisors, continuing education, and growing together. We are doubling down on our culture. Society is not caring for our most vulnerable as we elect leaders who do not provide the necessary resources. Residents and clients who require 24/7/365 care need the most care from the best people. Inadequate government reimbursement pays for inadequate care.

We can do better. Around-the-clock care teammates must be of the highest quality, and thus deserve the highest reimbursement. $15 an hour is no longer a living wage. Adequate government reimbursement and adequate pay are justice issues. The race and socioeconomic status of clients and their direct caregivers are devalued. LSC is doubling down on advocacy to explain this essential justice priority to the public and our elected representatives. Rixman named chief development officer

SC is happy to announce that Heidi Rixman has been named its chief development officer. She has 25 years of experience in education and human services fundraising, including six years at LSC as director of development. “We are thrilled Heidi’s call to serve and LSC’s needs are so aligned,” said LSC President and CEO Ted Goins. “Heidi has been preparing for this role her entire career which will benefit all of the residents and clients of LSC.” Rixman graduated with a bachelor of arts in English from Delaware Valley University and a master of science in nonprofit management from Eastern University, both in Pennsylvania. She has been a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) since 2020.

In 2011, she was named Outstanding Fundraising Executive of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) New Jersey, Southern Chapter. Rixman is currently the president of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Association of Lutheran Development Executives (ALDE). She is a member of Community in Christ Lutheran Church in Cornelius, North Carolina. “I am passionate about LSC’s mission because I have a deep and personal commitment to serving our neighbors across the Carolinas,” Rixman said. “LSC is a great place to work, and I am excited to be part of a team that is dedicated to expanding and growing our philanthropic support that will truly help meet the needs of our neighbors.”

Hembree named Executive Director of LSC New Americans Program

SC is excited to announce that Matthew Hembree has been named the Executive Director of its New Americans Program. LSC has provided refugee and immigrant services in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Columbia, South Carolina for many years. Recently, new service sites were established in Greenville and Charleston in South Carolina and Asheville in North Carolina. In this role, Hembree will manage all of those sites which assist hundreds of clients as they become acclimated to their new home in the United States. “We are fortunate to have a long-term LSC teammate with Matt Hembree’s operational and quality improvement background to take on this important work,” LSC President and CEO Ted Goins said. “The New Americans Program is an exciting start-up in a fast-changing environment; Matt is the

right teammate for the job!” Hembree has over 20 years of experience in human services, with a focus in the areas of program development, senior leadership, and leadership development. He has been

with LSC for 13 years. He graduated from Western Carolina University with a bachelors of science in sociology and went on to get his masters in sociology from The University of North Carolina Greensboro, where he had advanced studies in the field of online social interaction. In addition, Hembree has been trained by a founding member of the Results Based Leadership Consortium and works with leaders to achieve greater system-wide outcomes and effect deeper system reforms by creating influence strategies within their organizations. “I’m excited to join this New Americans team because for me it’s about developing new leaders and I’m passionate about our cause and what we are doing,” Hembree said. “I want to be part of what they are already doing. They are phenomenal and so dedicated to helping people in need.”

room, she added that skill to her repertoire. “I thought I’d give it a try, and it came out well,” she said. “Then I had more ideas of things I could do in my house with tile.”

Church groups, Girl Scout troops, and individuals have stepped up to make sure there are plenty of blessings inside. “I feel like I can be a lot of use to Trinity Living Center,” Kyles said. “I love the people. They really warm my heart, especially when we do an activity or something like the blessing box and they enjoy it. It makes me feel good.”

King named chaplain at Trinity Oaks After Trinity Oaks Chaplain Pastor Brenda Bynum retired, the community began its search for someone to fill her shoes. That person was Pastor Jill King. Pastor King’s move to Trinity Oaks was all about timing. After she was recommended for the position by Bishop Tim Smith from the North Carolina Synod, Trinity Oaks Executive Director Bill Johnson called her just as she was considering making a career move. “I was very interested because I had been at my parish for 24 years and for various reasons, I was feeling a need to take on something new,” King said. “I was ready for a new challenge, new opportunities, and a new place.” Pastor King is from Asheboro, North Carolina. She attended Western Carolina University and seminary at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Colum-

bia, South Carolina. Before her ordination, she was a teacher and assistant principal in Cumberland County Schools. It was during her time as an assistant principal that she started to struggle with

God’s call. “I’d gone down to visit seminary and I liked the feeling there,” she said. “It was just like God has opened up a window and said ‘Go.’” So, she went to seminary and continued to follow the call, which she said took her to some exciting places. She had an internship in New Mexico, worked as chaplain in two hospitals, and then spent 24 years at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Durham, North Carolina. In her new role at Trinity Oaks, she will tend to the spiritual needs of residents as well as participants at Trinity Living Center. “I’m looking forward to continuing the work that Brenda had done over the years she was here, but also branching into some other areas of service and care,” King said. “I’m really excited to be here.” J U N E 2 02 2

LSC opens New Americans Program office in Greenville, South Carolina

rinity Lutheran Church Senior Pastor Susan Crowell said she has always been passionate about refugee resettlement. She was introduced to the ministry as a child in Little Mountain, South Carolina when the church her family attended helped resettle refugees from Vietnam. “We made sure we had personal relationships with the families we sponsored at the time,” she said. “I’m so happy that I’m still in this call and that this can still be part of my career.” Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, South Carolina recently formed a partnership with LSC and the nonprofit opened a New Americans Program office in two of the church’s unused Sunday School classrooms. Refugees resettled through LSC are legal, fully vetted, and are here at the invitation of the United States of America. Crowell said when the congregation was approached about the possibility of being involved, she knew the program perfectly aligned with its passion to welcome all. “This ministry, it resonates with us deeply and fits so well with our mission. We are thrilled that it’s happening in Greenville and on our campus,” Crowell said. “We think it’s wonderful that people who are in danger in their homeland can come to the United States and that we here in Greenville can become a place of welcome and hospitality.” Amberly Chirolla, LSC’s area manager for the Greenville New 6

Americans Program office, said in just a few short months there have been so many miracles with the refugees that are coming into the area. When the individuals and families come in need donations, volunteers find them. LSC teammates are also working around-the-clock to provide transportation, find them temporary housing, and connect them with any services they might need to start their new lives in a new country. “It’s inspiring to me the pow-

We have so many case workers and volunteers that are so passionate about refugees.” The way Chirolla found out about her newly created position with LSC could also be categorized as a miracle. She has always loved traveling and has a master’s degree in international development. Before moving to South Carolina and deciding to stay home with her children, she managed

a study abroad office at Wayne State University in Detroit for 10 years. When Chirolla saw the news about the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and the families who were fleeing the country, she felt compelled to do something more. It began with an Eagle Scout project by her son, Eric Chirolla, who expressed an interest in collecting donations for refugees. That led to a fateful phone call with LSC’s Columbia, South Carolina office where Chirolla was informed that the nonprofit was opening a Greenville office. “I thought that they (LSC) would probably need employees, so I applied and thought I’d just see where it goes,” she said. “When they offered me the job, I felt so compelled that I came out of my stay-at-home retirement to do this important work.” The partnership is seamless so far, with both LSC and the church working to better the lives of our Afghan allies in any way they can. “This is part of what we are called to do. We really want to make room in our hearts for people who need and crave connection and belonging,” Crowell said. “We can welcome the stranger and make a home for the foreigner. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the open house for the LSC New Americans Program office in Greenville, South Carolina was held virtually on Thursday, March 3. The office is located in Trinity Lutheran Church. Speakers for this event included Greenville Area Manager Amberly Chirolla, Trinity Lutheran Church Pastor Susan Crowell, Ted Goins, and Bedrija Jazic. It also included a quick Q&A session. Pastor Crowell concluded the open house by officially dedicating the office.

Upstate teen helps Afghan allies as part of Eagle Scout project

hen he heard the news about refugees from Afghanistan coming to South Carolina, Eric Chirolla wanted to do something to help. The Riverside Middle School student was inspired by the compassion that his mother, Amberly Chirolla, had for the cause as well. Amberly is the area manager of the LSC New Americans Program in Greenville, South Carolina. “I saw it on the news, and I just wanted a more meaningful Eagle Scout project,” the 8th-grader said. “It just seemed like a great thing to do.” With the help of his troop, Chirolla collected furniture, clothes, kitchen gadgets, toiletries, and other items they would need as they settled into their new homes. The troop organized the donations and helped one of the newly arrived refugees move in. LSC opens New Americans Program office in Charleston

SC recently expanded its New Americans Program to Charleston, South Carolina, and partnered with Parkside Church to open an office in the church’s education building. Rev. Colin Kerr, the pastor of Parkside, said the ministry is a perfect fit for his congregation and faithful use of the space. The church itself is relatively new, although it operates in a historic space. In 2019, Parkside Church held its first worship service at the historic St. Barnabas Lutheran Church. The congregation’s members, which are a blended group from Parkside and St. Barnabas, are mostly millennials and Generation Z. Kerr says it is “two congregations working together to do ministry jointly.” “Our new model doesn’t include a lot of space usage, so the question was how do we

She quickly signed up with another organization to volunteer with intake and processing of the refugees. She worked with them for two weeks before coming back to Wilmington. “I felt strongly about the work. On some of the bases, there were thousands of refugees, and it was heartbreaking,” Poppell said. “But it was empowering to see so many different sectors of society come together to respond to this crisis.” When she returned from the trip, she felt like she still wanted to do more. That’s when God opened the door for her to move to Charleston. She has family in the area, and she saw that LSC was

opening a new office. She applied, and the rest is history. “I’m excited. I feel really good about it,” Poppell said about the office. “I feel great about the support we’ve received all over Charleston from different organizations, churches, the school district, and law enforcement. I’m excited to be in Charleston. God worked everything out for my life.” The office is located at 45 Moultrie St. Charleston, SC. The event was an open house and members of the community were invited to attend and learn more about the program. Following the speakers, Matt Hembree, executive director of the LSC New Americans Program and Julia Poppell, Charleston area manager, facilitated a Q&A session with the audience. Speakers during the event included LSC President and CEO Ted Goins, St. Mark’s Lutheran Pastor Matt Smith, and Buncombe County Commissioners Chairman Brownie Newman. LSC SC Regional Director of the New Americans Program Bedrija Jazic also shared her own story as a refugee, and LSC teammates thanked the Asheville community and volunteers for everything they’ve done to welcome our Afghan allies to the area. lmost every night, Norman and Marni McGee receive a phone call from Jawad saying he is coming to their house. Seconds after the phone call ends, there is a knock on the McGee’s door. “He usually calls when he’s at the front door,” Norman said. “Or I open the door and he’s in the driveway waving at me.” Jawad is one of the six Afghan refugees that Clemson Presbyterian Church’s Circle of Welcome, with the support of LSC’s New Americans Program, has been helping to resettle in the United States after they were forced to evacuate last August. When Jawad calls, he says he’s going to ride his bicycle over to “Baba and Bibi’s” home, which means “Grandfather and “Grandmother’s” in Salam. In the few months they’ve been in the City of Clemson, all six of the refugees have secured employment and housing and captured the hearts of the McGee’s and their neighbors. The Long Welcome Norman and Marni, along with other members of Clemson Presbyterian Church, are walking with the refugees every step of the way on the long road to becoming acclimated and established in a foreign country. They’ve driven them to job applications, found housing, helped them start bank accounts so they can send money back home to their families, made doctor and dentist appointments, and even taught them how to use a washing machine. Wahed, another refugee, has a second shift job at BorgWarner which is one city over from Clemson. He doesn’t have his driver’s license yet, so volunteers take him to work and pick him up every day. “We have several volunteers who are taking a nap at 10:30 p.m. and then going to pick him up,” Norman said. “This is totally changing their life and really accomplishing the long welcome.” Along with the essentials, volunteers have also found ways to have some fun. Jawad and Wahed ran a Cupid Shuffle 5K with Clemson Mayor Robert Halfacre in February, and they can often be found in a neighbor’s garage using their workout equipment. And even though they were hesitant at first, Norman said the refugees are getting to 10

know and love the family’s dogs as well. “They all feel like family in different ways,” Norman said. Norman believes that Jawad, who was a member of the Afghan special forces, comes to his house almost every night because he doesn’t want to be alone. Jawad and Wahed are roommates and since Wahed works second shift, he isn’t there at night. On a recent evening visit, Marni and

Norman were asking Jawad about his home. They pulled out their iPad and showed him a satellite view of the area. “It was like he was flying an airplane toward his home. He was saying ‘This is the road to my house.’ ‘Here’s my house.’ ‘Here is the ice cream shop near my house.’ He was literally singing like he was walking up to his front door,” Norman said. “My wife and I were both in tears watching him in that moment.” As for the City of Clemson, Norman believes that the normalcy of having international students living all around Clemson University plus the recognition that the refugees from Afghanistan are here because they helped Americans are the reasons that residents have been so welcoming and willing to do anything to help. Currently, there are discussions about holding English as a Second Language (ESL) in McDonald’s since so many of the refugees work there. “It’s a small enough town in a southern city where they recognize what these guys did in Afghanistan for Americans, and they (city residents) know they are here because they helped there,” Norman said. “The average South Carolinian realizes we owe them, and that’s what has been opening all of these doors.”

‘He fit in perfectly’ Thompson family shares foster care to adoption story

hen Mel and Sherry Thompson met Jason, they knew he was meant to be part of their family. “He fit right in with the family. We are very vocal and like to play and have fun together,” Mel Thompson said. “He fit perfectly into that, and the entire family loves him.” The Thompson family lives in Sumter, South Carolina where Mel Thompson is the pastor of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church. Even though they have three biological children, the couple decided to become licensed foster parents with LSC in 2020. “My wife had done fostering before, it had always been on her heart,” Mel Thompson said. “Then being a pastor, we met a lot of children in the churches that I was associated

with that needed people or a place to stay for one night. It broke our hearts to see these children in need, so we started the foster care process.” Once they were licensed, they didn’t have to wait long for a placement. Five days later, they got a call about Jason. “They pulled up with him and he peeked over the door in the car. We started getting emotional and were immediately attached,” Mel Thompson said. That was October 2020, and by Christmas, the couple knew they wanted to adopt him. The couple began the adoption process in 2021 and in January 2022, Jason was officially adopted and became a member of the Thompson family. It was a natural fit in every way, even down to the names. The couple’s

biological children are Justin, Jake, and Julia. And now they have Jason. You can hear the smile in Mel Thompson’s voice when he talks about his son. Jason loves the outdoors, fishing, and all types of animals. “We love him dearly,” Mel Thompson said. “We asked God for this, and that’s why we believe it worked out the way it has.” The couple is still fostering with LSC as well. “It’s God’s calling for us. Trinity Oaks team leads dementia training in Bethlehem

rinity Oaks teammates Deana Burris and Deborah Tillman said they were forever changed after spending four days in Bethlehem leading dementia trainings for medical professionals and family caregivers. “To have the opportunity to be able to go and do something like that has marked my life forever. It has changed me,” Burris, life enrichment campus director at Trinity Oaks and certified dementia care specialist, said. “It was just amazing.” Discussion about the trip began over three years ago with Michael Connor, a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Salisbury, North Carolina. St. John’s has a long-standing partnership with Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem. Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb, who retired as pastor from that congregation, is also the founder of Dar al-Kalima University College of Arts and Culture, where the training was held. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Connor was contacted by

Raeda Mansour, a registered nurse and the university’s intergenerational programs manager, about the much-needed training. She said they had no resources and desperately needed help. Connor reached out to Trinity Oaks Executive Director Bill Johnson about putting together a team for the training. “He (Johnson) came to me and asked if I would be willing to go to Bethlehem. I told him of course I would go and help develop a plan,” Burris said. “I’ve worked in dementia and Alzheimer’s for 30 years. I’ve been to workshops and gotten numerous certifications.” Tillman, social worker at Trinity Oaks, was also selected to attend due to her specific education and training in dementia care. She is certified in advanced clinical dementia practice. The group began to meet monthly on Zoom to create the curriculum for the training. Even though the world was grappling with a deadly disease, they didn’t stop planning. “I really felt like at this point, it was almost a commission from God. And I thought, where He sends me, I will go,” Burris said. “This was a mission that was meant to be. Lutheran Services Carolinas put so much work and effort into this. St. John’s put so much work into this. Raeda put so much work into this. We are going to do.” The time finally came to go in March

r. Kay Conrad was born and raised for a life of service as a Lutheran. Her church was a firm supporter of Lutheran Children’s Home of the South when she was a teenager, she married a Lutheran pastor, and she spent part of her career as the director of development with Lutheran Family Services (LFS). Most recently, she was the first donor to LSC’s For the

Children Endowment Fund which is designed to meet the future needs of children in North Carolina through innovative programs and services. The fund is part of LSC’s Be The Light campaign. “LSC has just been part of my life for a very long time,” Conrad said. “It’s in my DNA.” Conrad married her husband, Paul, immediately after he completed seminary. His first parish was Concordia

Lutheran Church in China Grove, North Carolina. She said that first congregation taught her about life and relationships. “I married very young, and I knew nothing as I look back now. People in that congregation were so patient with me and so loving,” she said. “But the one thing I did know how to do was church, because I’d done it all my life.” Paul’s next church was in Statesville, North Carolina and then the couple moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where Paul became pastor at Epiphany Lutheran Church in 1971. When Conrad decided to leave her job as an English teacher and pursue a different career path, she turned her attention to finding a full-time position in the church. As God would have it, LFS was searching for someone who had a relationship with Lutheran pastors and congregations to serve as director of church relations. “It answered what I felt like was my call. It was just God’s timing,” she said. In that role, Conrad got to know many of the nonprofit’s clients as well as its teammates. “We trained a lot of young professionals in their chosen careers of social work. Seeing them grow and develop and then move into other jobs in the profession has been a pleasure,” she said. “We had a really great team.” After two careers, one might think that Conrad would decide to retire. But during her time with LFS, she worked with GSB Fundraising & Nonprofit Consulting. She found that with her congregation connections, she had the skills and passion for supporting capital campaigns. After retiring from LFS, Kay joined GSB as a consultant primarily working with congregations in North and South Carolina. “I loved that work because it gets you in congregations and that feels like home to me,” she said. “Congregations are just like individuals. They are their own separate organisms, and they function in different ways, yet basically in the same way. It was just a great experience.” Today, Conrad is still an active member of

By making a donation to the For the Children Endowment Fund, she knows she will be part of that work well into the future. “I love to give to endowment funds because I think it’s a vehicle we have that really does pay a gift forward. It honors the past and keeps on giving long after I’m gone,” Conrad said. “An endowment fund lasts as long as an organization lasts, so I like the idea that 50 years from now when I’m no longer here, some child somewhere will be getting a benefit from my gift. Epiphany Lutheran Church. She has since retired from GSB but said when she turned 80, she decided she wasn’t being as useful as God intended her to be. So, she signed up to become a lay preacher through the NC Synod’s Lay Preaching Certification class. Lay preachers are scheduled through the NC Synod office to preach in congregations with leadership vacancies. Through it all, she continues to support LSC, which was created with the coming together of LFS and Lutheran Services of the Aging (LSA). Conrad knows many individuals who have been impacted by LSC’s programs and wants that work to continue. “Even today I could name children in group homes that I got to know or refugee families,” she said. “When I look at LSC I see individuals, I don’t necessarily see this huge organization. And I think that’s the way LSC views all of its work, as individuals. That just makes you feel good about supporting the organization.”

About For the Children Endowment Fund • To create a light that shines for years to come, LSC hopes to raise a total of $10 million in donations and legacy gifts within the next 10 years. The Be The Light campaign seeks to raise $1 million to establish this fund. • Annual earnings from the endowment will be used to support services for children where they are needed most. These funds might be used to: • Offset unanticipated decreases in funding • Invest in training to support LSC’s clinical model of care for children, as well as ongoing updates and credentialing needs. • Support training for youth in budgeting and financial matters. • Invest in innovative tools to assess the needs of children coming into care. • Provide direct assistance to children aging out of foster care, but below age 21, as they are seeking housing, education, and employment. • Invest in updated software to help record and analyze the outcomes experienced by children in care. • Provide support and services to survivors of human trafficking under the age of 21. eremy Haley, Trinity Landing’s new executive chef, plans to bring enticing entrees to residents’ tables. Haley loved cooking from a very young age. “I watched my mom in the kitchen, I admired her work ethic more than anything. She was a remarkable example for me growing up, an inspiration,” he said. “Just by watching her, I became interested in culinary [arts] and cooking. I started working in restaurants at a young age. I washed dishes at 16 and moved my way up the ranks.” To hone his craft, Haley traveled the world, experiencing new flavors and techniques. His passion took him to many places, including Italy, Austria, and Ireland. But it was his time in Europe that most influenced the culinary style that he will share with residents of Trinity Landing. “When I was in Europe, I had the oppor-

During her evening with the support group, which is facilitated by Trinity at Home Outreach Coordinator Teresa Dakins, Bunn talked to attendees about different approaches to moments that may arise with their loved one and used interactive role-play games to illustrate them. She put the caregivers in the position of their loved ones with dementia and asked them to think about their point-of-view during interactions. “I’m here to learn anything we can pick up that would be helpful on a day-to-day basis. We look for all the help we can get,” said Gordan Rutzen, who attends the support group to learn more about caring for his wife. “I’ve learned that you have to keep your cool, be nice, be pleasant. They can’t help it, so you have to understand that.” The goal for the trainings comes down to one thing: being better. “We can learn different things. We can practice different approaches. We can use different strategies,” Bunn said. “We can do better for them.”

SC teammates understand better than anyone the needs of our ministry. We see firsthand how even the smallest things can make a huge difference in the lives of our residents, participants, and clients. LSC is a not-forprofit ministry that relies in part on charitable donations to provide the LSC quality of care and services. In 2021, not only did employees continue to provide abundant living for clients and residents, but more than 1,100 employees gave to LSC financially as well. Disney magic comes to Trinity Oaks National Virtual Vacation Day was March 30, and Trinity Oaks health and rehab traveled to the happiest place on Earth. The life enrichment team used virtual reality, and a little Disney magic, to plan a dream-filled day for residents. They virtually enjoyed some of Disney’s iconic rides, sipped frozen treats, and posed for photos with some of their favorite characters.
