CANTOR’S CORNER A note from Chad Fothergill (LSM 2000), Cantor
Echoes of Our Musical Heritage “I heard you had more than 30 students studying organ!” “I loved hearing Paul Soulek, David Cherwien, and the chapel choir at the LSM hymn festival!” “I wish LSM had been around when I was in high school!” Expressions like this filled conversations shortly after LSM 2025 concluded, as members of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians gathered for their biennial conference. Many colleagues eagerly inquired about LSM, sharing their enthusiasm, affirmation, and support for its mission. Their response is a testament to the vision of LSM’s founders, the ongoing strength of the program, and the recent expansion of our worship and church music faculty and staff—all made possible by the vocational and financial support of students’ families, teachers, pastors, congregations, and more. While browsing exhibits, I purchased a copy of Portraits in American Lutheran Sacred Music, 1847–1947 (Concordia Publishing House, 2025), a new book by the Texas-based scholar, organist, and composer Benjamin Kolodziej. As I’ve read
this fascinating account, I’m reminded of the vital importance of LSM’s mission for the church today. Like their forebears from Luther’s time onward, nineteenth-century Lutheran emigrants from Germany took great care to build a robust infrastructure for musical instruction in their new homeland. Ships were laden with printed sheet music, all manner of instruments, at least one pipe organ, and even a collection of songs printed for the transatlantic voyage. In a delightful way, one important task of LSM 2025 echoes this older story—packing a large library of books, music, and instruments for a (much shorter, and perhaps less treacherous) interstate journey from Indiana to Minnesota in preparation for LSM 2026! In the later nineteenth century, as more schools and seminaries were established in states such as Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska, teachers and professors equipped students with skills to lead congregations—as singers and violinists for parishes without organs, and as organists for the growing number of parishes that invested in organs from German-born builders active in the United States. And in stories that are all too familiar for the LSM community, Kolodziej describes how professors could barely hear themselves think above the cacophony of scales, études, and hymns emanating from practice rooms, or of how adding one small organ allowed students to gain precious extra minutes for practice! Moreover, students formed in these young American Lutheran institutions sometimes returned to them as faculty and staff, inspired to share this legacy with new generations.

While these pages may read like a nostalgic daydream, their echoes of today’s LSM experiences remind me how firmly LSM stands in the Lutheran heritage of providing holistic education that leads with music—not just any music, but of the finest and best-crafted exemplars available. Although we may study scores on iPad screens instead of hand-copied manuscripts and no longer need students to pump the organ bellows for services, the central tenets of Lutheran musical education continue to be the foundation on which LSM’s future is built. It will be our duty and delight to continue this story for generations to come. Soli Deo gloria!

A SUMMER OF Belоging “Look at all these young people interested in church music!” That was David Cherwien’s overwhelming impression during his first summer at LSM. Cherwien, who served as Cantor at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis (2001– 2024) and as Artistic Director of the National Lutheran Choir (2001–2022), noted the exhilaration of making music at such a high level, where students eagerly rise to meet the bar and pursue depth, quality, and maturity. He emphasized that community at LSM happens naturally—everyone feels valued, empowered to learn, and accountable to one another. For him, LSM is a powerful reminder that Lutheran
worship traditions are alive, growing, and relevant. “We believe…” was the theme of the 2025 Hymn Festival, directed by Paul Soulek, Cantor at St. John Lutheran Church and School in Seward. Adjunct faculty member at Concordia University, Nebraska. Soulek wove Lutheran chorales like Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice with newer works like Day of Arising. Impressed by the collegiality of faculty and the passion of students, he called LSM a living testimony that high school students, when guided well, can embrace the Church’s musical riches and make them come alive in community.
The 2025 Sanctuary Recital Series, generously sponsored by Tom and Sylvia Luekens, featured three performances by LSM Fellows at Trinity, Christ, and Immanuel Lutheran Churches in Valparaiso. Full audiences enjoyed diverse and artistically rich programs of music presented by LSM's collegiate fellows.
Class Harp debuted in 2025, with seven students learning fundamentals under Amy Nam and Amalia Ranstrom—plus two more in private study. A milestone summer for harp at LSM!
This summer, LSM enhanced its digital presence by introducing three new ways to connect: Live from LSM for real-time concert streaming, LSM on Demand for full performances, and LSM Encores for highlights and special features. Together, these platforms expanded access and deepened engagement.

LSM honored Dorothy “Dean Dot” Burroughs as the 2025 Dr. Carlos Messerli Service Award recipient, recognizing her decades of leadership, teaching, and care that have shaped generations of students since LSM’s founding.

THE LIFELONG OF LSM
Alumni composer Jonathan Bartz (LSM 2002–2003) returned in 2025 as the Omega String Faculty Ensemble premiered his new work, Brine, on the Faculty Chamber Music Series. Commissioned through LSM’s Alumni Composer program, it is now published and freely available through the LSM Press at LSMacademy.org/lsmpress.
Directed by Dr. Andrew Last (LSM 1991, Festival Choir Director 2014-2016), Director of Choral Activities at Luther College, the Alumni Choir gathered at LSM 2025 to rehearse, reconnect, and share their music with the community. LSM honored Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Reaves (LSM 2002), trombonist with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, as the 2025 Alumni Award recipient, celebrating his distinguished career of musical excellence, service, and mentorship.
At the 2025 Alumni Gathering, alumni from across LSM's history reunited to share memories, reconnect with friends, and celebrate the lasting impact of LSM.
LSM alumna Jeanine Krause (LSM 1989–1991) led workshops introducing students to historic instruments, giving them a rare, hands-on connection to music’s past. LSM reached a milestone in 2025 with more than 100 alumni featured in the Alumni Spotlight series. These stories highlight the many ways alumni continue to grow, serve, and inspire.

The third annual Step Up LSM scholarship drive raised over $47,000 in just 24 hours to support student scholarships for LSM 2025. Thanks to the generosity of more than 150 alumni, parents, and friends, LSM continues to ensure that all students—regardless of financial circumstance—can experience the transformative power of LSM.
