Nearly 20 years ago, my daughter Rebecca participated in Lutheran Summer Music. At the time, Rebecca regularly played the organ for our church, and I provided occasional back-up. The summer that Rebecca spent at LSM was transformative. She not only honed her technical skills and abilities but also connected with other teens who shared her passion for church music. She returned from LSM excited and inspired, with important friendships in the making. My annual support of LSM is given in honor of Rebecca, her friends, and all of the academy’s participants—past, present, and future. These young people, like LSM itself, value music and its capacity to enrich our worship experience and grow our faith. Dear Friends,
As we approach the end of 2020 we are filled with gratitude and optimism. Despite this most challenging and uncertain time, our LSM community remains as close as ever, connecting in new and creative ways to shine light on our mission and provide hope for the world. Because of your care, support, and advocacy, LSM is leading a national resurgence in young people aligning their musical gifts with the church. Through LSM we are assured that concert halls will be filled with performers and music lovers; organ benches at churches will have skilled musicians to guide the musical life of the congregation; choirs will have members to sing our favorite hymns; and church pews will be filled with the faithful, coming together in worship and song. Our treasured classical and sacred music traditions will be secure for many generations in the hands of future LSM students and our almost 40 years of alumni. We can work toward this bright future, even as we continue to navigate the tragic COVID-19 pandemic. LSM students and alumni instill confidence that the best is yet to come. While LSM is now connecting digitally and offering virtual educational programs, our flame is being kept alive and will be ready to burn even brighter when we are together again in person. Starting in 2021, we look forward to celebrating 40 years of LSM with you, as a community, together. As we continue to grow and provide hope for many, we thank you for your support,care, and belief. Inaugural LSM Advisory Council The LSM community is full of energetic young professionals who care deeply about this program and are eager to have a role in shaping its future. The LSM Advisory Council was formed early in 2020 to give these individuals--and more to come--a seat at the table and an opportunity to use their wide variety of skills and experience. The inaugural Advisory Council is made up of 14 members who have each been profoundly influenced by LSM. The members have a collective 70 LSM summers among them and represents a diversity of experiences and connection points with the program. The Advisory Council’s deep roots within LSM will ensure the continuation of the program’s longstanding traditions as they lead the way in planning a bright future. They will affect positive growth by implementing key strategic initiatives in programming, enrollment, alumni engagement, and development areas. The Advisory Council started meeting virtually this spring and has formed several dynamic task forces to increase Alumni Engagement, Congregational Engagement, and plan exciting initiatives to honor the 40th anniversary of LSM. They will meet during Festival Week at LSM 2021, and hope to see you there!
A Message from the Advisory Council Chair Greetings! It’s an honor to be writing to you as the chair of the newly formed Advisory Council. We are a group of LSM alumni working alongside the Board of Directors to provide leadership and insight into alumni and congregational engagement. It’s such a joy and blessing to work with this talented bunch of people as we help steer LSM into its fifth decade and beyond. Like so many of you, LSM has formed an integral part of my life’s story. I attended for two summers as a high school student, and later served as a counselor and Dean of Students. My husband Seth and I met at LSM as counselors and have attended 12 LSM summers between the two of us! Even though I haven’t pursued a professional path in music or ministry, I’m certain that LSM played a role in developing the work ethic and leadership skills that serve me well as an attorney. And, to be sure, LSM solidified my college choice, prepared me to be a lay leader in my congregation, and helped forged my love of cello and singing. I truly cannot imagine my life without it. We’ve started to plan LSM’s 40th anniversary celebration—and we’d love to hear from you! How would you like to participate? What would you find most meaningful? How will you help us? Please be in touch with your ideas, suggestions, and stories! I’d love the chance to connect with you. When LSM 2020 was canceled, faculty and students stayed positive and got creative. From video practice tips, performances, lessons, and words of encouragement, the LSM faculty went above and beyond to connect with their students and the greater LSM community. Webinar Series
This fall, LSM curated a series of online webinar events hosted by LSM faculty and friends. While in-person events remained on hiatus, this new series brought our national and global LSM community together to learn and discuss relevant, helpful, and interesting topics in music. Webinar sessions included resources for band teachers during the pandemic, a deep dive into American music, and methods for maintaining vocal health.

Honoring Dr. Carl Schalk
2021 Carlos Messerli Service Award Recipient In 2018, Lutheran Summer Music established the Carlos Messerli Service Award to recognize individuals who have displayed outstanding service to the mission of LSM. This year, LSM is proud to announce that Dr. Carl Schalk will be honored with the 2021 Carlos Messerli Service Award for his decades of leadership and service to LSM. A preeminent composer, lecturer, and professor, Dr. Schalk has been a friend of LSM since its inception in 1981. Perhaps his most recognized contribution is his setting of Luther’s Morning Prayer, written for the LSM Community. The gift of this music is one that students and alumni carry with them as a constant reminder of their place as a valuable member of the LSM community.
Chad Fothergill Named LSM Cantor Sponsored by Linda and Robert Kempke
As LSM continues to expand its impact on the musical and spiritual lives of its students and the broader community, visionary and consistent leadership are needed to guide the program’s growth and reach. This fall, LSM was honored to name Chad Fothergill as the inaugural LSM Cantor, a new position sponsored by Linda and Robert Kempke. A remarkable organist, composer, and educator, Chad is also a member-leader of church music communities nationwide. He serves as editor of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians journal, CrossAccent, and as a member of the Institute for Liturgical Studies’ advisory council.
Dr. Carl Schalk Scholarship Endowment Fund The Dr. Carl Schalk Lutheran Summer Music Scholarship Endowment Fund has been established to coincide with this award. This new fund advances LSM’s strategic goal of removing the financial barrier to attendance for all students. This Scholarship Endowment Fund will honor Dr. Schalk’s legacy not only in name, but in the promise that the future of music and the Church, which he has served so faithfully, will be preserved through the training and nurturing of these young people. Gifts made toward this new scholarship endowment will be generously matched 3:1. The LSM Cantor provides leadership and direction for the many musical components of worship life, the sacred music curriculum, and LSM’s external connections with church musicians. This new, year-round role also creates and oversees new opportunities for LSM students and church musicians to interface and learn from one another, enriching the experience for all.

Of his own time at LSM, he recalls: “Having only played a few hymns for a small parish, LSM immediately opened my eyes and ears to the symphony of possibilities that accompanied a pursuit of musical craft, both within and beyond the church. My experience at LSM profoundly influenced the nature of my college search and, ultimately, my sense of vocation.” His dedication to the students at LSM brings immense joy and depth to their worship experience and the LSM community is incredibly fortunate to have him fill this important new role. A Family Reflection All five of our family members have spent summers at Lutheran Summer Music. Allison attended the first program in 1982 (St. Olaf), and returned as a counselor in 1989 (Augustana – Sioux Falls). Both Allison and Gary were counselors in 1992 and 1993 and visited Festival Week whenever possible for several years thereafter. Our children both attended as well: Evelyn in 2011 (Luther) and Matthew in 2017 and 2018 (Valparaiso). Our son-in-law, Jeremy Zimmer, is an LSM alum too from 2013! It truly is a family affair! The number one reason for our close connection over 40 years is the high quality of music instruction and performance. The caliber of the faculty and the standard of musical excellence are exceptional. developed Allison’s piano technique and knowledge of repertoire. Yet there is more! This Christian environment is like no other. Students and faculty from across the country become an intentional community with common interests. Each day begins and ends with song and prayer in worship – acknowledging from whom our talents come. Years later, any time we sing Evening Prayer or Carl Schalk’s Luther’s Morning Prayer, we are transported into the LSM congregation of our own experience. It always is a very musical experience indeed, and an opportunity we yearn to avail ourselves, our children, and others of as often as possible. Our family is grateful to the many donors who made LSM possible for us, and we will continue to support LSM to be sure this special program will inspire future generations of young people for years to come.
LSM’s 40th anniversary celebrations will include a new choral work composed by Composer-in-Residence Dr. Benjamin Krause, commissioned by David & Cynthia Krause and family. Dr. Krause’s new work will be premiered by the LSM Choir and conducted by Dr. Nancy Menk during LSM 2021 Festival Week. The multimovement work will include sacred texts from a diverse group of sources and will showcase the superb acoustics of the Chapel of the Resurrection. The LSM Advisory Council is planning a momentous alumni reunion to overlap with LSM 2021 Festival Week which will provide opportunities for alumni to reconnect with each other and lead musical and worship events on campus. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months! While we’re optimistic about returning to a robust academy next summer, we also are taking all precautions and developing contingency plans should we need to modify LSM 2021 in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Should the above activities not be able to be planned adequately or should large numbers of people not be able to gather on campus safely, they may be postponed to 2022.

An Alumni Reflection Martin Luther eloquently penned, “For you are powerful not that you may make the weak weaker by oppression, but that you may make them powerful by raising them up and defending them.” The ability to attend a summer music program is a privilege. I was blessed to be able to attend LSM in 2000 and 2001 as a high school student. The reason I support student scholarships to LSM is because the program emphasizes music as a gift from God that should be used to bless and uplift others. There are many music camps that a student can attend to become a skilled musician; LSM is special because it enables students to look at talent and training through the lens of faith. The lens of faith frees students from pursing a musical path solely devoted to advancement and the accumulation of accolades. It empowers students to share their talent and training with the world.
A Parent Reflection We sent our two children to LSM while we were living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our daughter Liz attended in 1992 and 1993. In later years she served as a counselor and Dean of Students—and also met her husband Seth Hartwell at LSM. Our son Eric attended in 1996. Eric had wanted to join a drum corps that summer and was disappointed that we sent him instead to LSM! However, he had such a positive and lifechanging experience that he even highlighted it in his essay for application to St. Olaf College a year later. Eric wrote that he became more confident, made many good friends, and learned to know himself better. Elizabeth and Eric appreciated the opportunities to learn and grow musically and also treasured the experiences in this faith community of like-minded students and splendid faculty. Eric graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance from St. Olaf in 2002. Tragically, he died in an automobile accident in 2005 shortly after completing a Master’s degree in percussion performance in Cleveland, Ohio. We decided that we wanted to honor Eric’s memory in ways that would reflect his great love of music. We chose to commission Steven Amundson (former LSM faculty member) to compose an orchestral work, “The Gift,” which was premiered by the St. Olaf Orchestra (of which Eric had been principal percussionist) and has been performed by a number of other orchestras in the United States. We also commissioned Carolyn Jennings to write a choral work, “Awake, My Heart,” performed by the LSM Concert Choir in 2010 and by various church choirs, and we continue to support the two drum corps of which Eric was a member, the Blue Devils and the Santa Clara Vanguard. In addition, we also sponsor the LSM Percussion Studio in Eric’s memory. Since 2009 we have underwritten the studios of eleven faculty members! Having had the opportunity in recent years to meet several of the LSM percussion faculty we continue to be grateful for their fine teaching and dedication to their students. It is our hope that our charitable giving provides opportunities for other young people to develop their musical skills and to increase their love of music as it did for our son.

I am very pleased that LSM has entered the conservation on racial justice and Western Classical Music. They have made a commitment to program works by composers from unrepresented populations at their concerts. As a nonprofit organization, Lutheran Summer Music is sustained by the generosity of parents, friends, and alumni who make contributions of all sizes. These gifts underwrite programs, provide student scholarships, and bridge the gap between tuition revenue and actual operating expenses. “Back in the 1990s I came across a poster at church announcing a four-week summer music program for high schoolers. It was described as an independent Lutheran undertaking intended to provide high caliber training for gifted young persons. The unique feature of this Lutheran Music Program was the concept of the month-long session taking place within a faith community. In addition to practice and concerts there would be daily prayer and a Sunday Eucharist, at which students would contribute their own talents soli Deo gloria. The idea behind LSM won me over early on. It was a program dearly needed by congregations wondering where the next generation of organists, instrumentalists, and singers would come from. I began contributing to LSM at that point and have continued to do so. I plan to continue so long as I have life and breath within me, and when that is no longer the case, an insurance policy with LSM as beneficiary will provide one last bit of assistance to a wonderful program.”

In anticipation of LSM’s 40th anniversary we are creating new archival collections on the LSM website for each year. The LSM Archives will include photos, rosters, concert programs, worship bulletins, and marketing materials.

I attended LSM as a student for four years, and served as an intern for three. I have also visited four Festival Weeks which equals eleven years of participating in this uplifting community of music and faith. I support LSM because it has opened a door for me to a world I didn’t know existed. I’ve participated in large groups and classes only to realize that there is so much more to learn. Because of LSM I have been able to better know myself. This would never have been possible without the magnificent faculty members, the amazing students, and the breath-taking music. New Fundraising Tool We also know that traditional fundraising opportunities may look different this year, and are thrilled to introduce a new crowdfunding tool for enrolled students, which can be requested and set up by LSM staff for your convenience. Donations made toward a student’s tuition will go directly to LSM and be automatically counted toward Matching Fund opportunities to reduce out-of-pocket tuition significantly.
