My three children attended LSM, and each of them benefited from the many things that LSM has to offer, not the least the participation in worship! The excellent teaching, the inspiration provided by the staff, and the joy of making music with others are treasured memories for my adult children, one of whom went on to become a professional musician. I am so thankful for LSM! Betsy Brown

Corvallis, OR
Welcome!
Happy 40th anniversary! I write to you at an exciting time for LSM. 2022 will mark 40 years since the first LSM in 1982 on the campus of St. Olaf College.
LSM 2021 was a summer unlike any other as we continued to navigate the challenges and uncertainties of COVID-19. Thanks to your care, support, and enthusiasm, LSM remained committed to our students. From the inaugural virtual Winter Session to a thriving in-person community during LSM 2021, this unique year was a powerful display of resilience, creativity, and growth in our community. I continue to be inspired by the LSM 2021 community that came together- with short notice- to form a strong bond while dedicating themselves to musical growth and worship. I will never forget those first few moments singing Carl Schalk’s setting of Luther’s Morning Prayer on day one, which for me, was the first time singing with others since March of 2020. Join me in celebrating 2021 with the stories featured here while we look forward to LSM 2022. I hope you will visit us on campus during LSM 2022 for a recital, evening prayer service, or for the entirety of Festival Week. We will also continue providing quality video streaming and archived videos of concerts and worship services so you may follow along from home or view at a later date. Take a moment to consider if there is a young person in your life who, with your encouragement, would thrive at LSM and forever be changed by the experience. Let’s work together to make LSM 2022 a reality for them. Amidst the enthusiasm and momentum leading to our 40th anniversary, it is the impact the program has on our young people that is worth celebrating. Rest assured that today’s LSM students and 40 years of alumni serve and will serve as leaders in church, music, and society. Our treasured classical and sacred music and liturgical traditions are in good hands with these young people as we confidently look to the future. Thank you for your support and being an important part of the LSM community. With gratitude,
Thomas Bandar Executive & Artistic Director tbandar@lutheransummermusic.org

“Lutheran” music is not just a historical collection of genres or music sung by Lutherans, but a guiding philosophy about music’s formational and pedagogical power that transcends genre, time, and place.
LSM: A LABORATORY IN THE MIDDLE OF THINGS Novels and films sometimes begin in medias res, in the middle of things, plunging audiences immediately into the dramatic action. The concept can help us understand music, too. The churning strings and biting suspensions that begin Bach’s St. John Passion situate listeners in those turbulent Holy Week events. Brahms’s late keyboard pieces often seem to begin mid-phrase, entering a conversation already in progress. LSM, too, always seems to begin in medias res. A few hours after their arrival, students gather for evening prayer adding their voices to ancient songs of faith—an early Greek hymn, the psalms, Mary’s song—and the ongoing song of LSM. In 2021, we found ourselves in the middle of a dramatic story: just days before, we learned that we could gather and sing in the air-conditioned chapel. Weeks’ worth of worship planning was condensed into a few days. The summer unfolded like a contrapuntal masterpiece: the community’s trademark musicianship, the enthusiasm, flexibility, and optimism of students, and the trust of parents and supporters combined to dispel uncertainty. Despite important safety protocols, a palpable sense of grace and gratitude infused daily life at LSM.
INAUGURAL LSM MUSIC THERAPY OFFERING

In worship, we listened carefully and, with the help of students in the organ studio and church music elective, learned important lessons about how masking and distancing in the chapel affected our perceptions, choices, and leadership of assembly song. In many ways, worship functioned like a laboratory—arranging texts and melodies for new combinations of instruments, repeating the same songs in different ways, and exploring how music, community, and faith interact. The more I reflect on the laboratory metaphor, the more I appreciate its meaning for LSM’s future. In his writings, Luther often alluded to local adaptation and flexibility: “Lutheran” music is not just a historical collection of genres or music sung by Lutherans, but a guiding philosophy about music’s formational and pedagogical power that transcends genre, time, and place. Bach borrowed from plainsong, chorales, dance styles, operatic gestures, and more in his own laboratory-like workshop, often revising his music to fit new contexts and needs. And today’s Lutheran worship books borrow from many styles and faith traditions. The LSM laboratory allows the next generation of musical leaders to encounter treasures of their craft, but, perhaps more importantly, to learn to ask questions—What? Why? Who? Where? How?—that can enrich communal music making in the diverse, ever-changing world around us. Chad Fothergill, LSM 2000, LSM Cantor

I’m so grateful that in 2021, I not only had the chance to be a part of LSM for the first time, but also was able to lead the first music therapy class in the history of the program. As the threads of laughter, drumming, and music, both new and old, filled the hallways of the Center for the Arts, it brought back memories of myself as a young violin student many years ago. I remember the pure passion and joy that I felt during summer music festivals, at finally being able to surround myself with beautiful musicmaking day and night.
meaningful ways. Students had a chance to stretch their creative muscles and challenge their habitual ways of learning as instrumentalists sang, vocalists drummed, and volunteers improvised and wrote songs together.
Since those early days, I have worked as a music therapist for twenty years and now direct the Bachelor of Music Therapy degree at Valparaiso University. However, designing a music therapy curriculum for LSM was a new endeavor for me, and I was unsure of how well the class would go over. To my delight, the music therapy classroom was overflowing with so many students that we barely had enough room for everyone! The vibrancy and enthusiasm of the students inspired me, as they jumped in with their whole selves and bonded with each other in deep and
Students came armed with curiosity and wonder as we explored the history of the music therapy profession from veterans in World War II to the cutting-edge music and neuroscience research of today. Students also had a chance to watch music therapy in action in live audio and video recordings. This included the use of a music activated pacifier (PAL) to reduce hospital stays of premature infants, rap-writing to empower underresourced youth, and rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) to help stroke victims learn to walk again. One highlight of the summer was watching the

documentary film, On the Other Side of the Fence, a story about the power of music to foster empathy, compassion and acceptance between disabled and non-disabled children. Finally, students were able to explore music therapy directly themselves, experiencing how guided imagery and relaxation could help them with performance anxiety and daily stressors. I am deeply thankful for everyone who made this class possible. It was a wonderful way to re-integrate into live and in-person music making after almost a year of isolation. The need for music therapy and service is so great in our society. My hope is that the music therapy program at LSM will continue to grow for years to come. Dr. Sangeeta Swamy
A FELLOW REFLECTION What does it mean to be a Fellow at Lutheran Summer Music? Countless family and friends posed this question to me before this summer’s program, and I often floundered when answering it. I usually responded with “I’ll be a musical mentor while also being mentored,” and struggled to further elaborate on the position. I now understand that this very ambiguity makes it a truly special and unique opportunity, one that I am blessed to have found. The LSM Fellowship program empowers each Fellow to personalize their own experience, allowing each Fellow to decide exactly how the combined role of teacher and student practically manifests itself. They can emphasize chamber music, lesson observation, or teaching, just to name a few potential focuses. I participated in a Fellow string quartet and quintet, quickly preparing a large amount of repertoire similarly to how a faculty member does. As a result, I left LSM much more comfortable with sight reading and short preparation times. I also observed and was taught by LSM’s world class violin faculty, helped to lead the second violins in the LSM orchestra, and coached a student chamber group. These experiences raised my confidence in my teaching abilities and provided me with various teaching strategies. As I aspire to be a full-time private teacher, my fellowship encouraged, nurtured, and focused that goal. In addition to the countless personalized opportunities for musical growth, the LSM fellowship supports camaraderie and networking among other Fellows and faculty members, promoting lasting and productive relationships that continue past the summer session. I still keep in contact with the violin faculty members and continue to do a Bible study with another 2021 Fellow over Zoom. The LSM staff trusted the Fellows with freedom and autonomy. As a result, I grew as a student, teacher, leader, friend, and Christian. So, what does it mean to be a Fellow at Lutheran Summer Music? I got to choose, and I am all the better for it. Addie Jo Lambrecht, LSM 2021 Violin Fellow Originally from Neenah, WI, Addie Jo Lambrecht was a violin Fellow during LSM 2021 and is currently a student at St. Olaf College pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance

PASSING THE BATON I credit aspects of my success as a professional musician to the experiences I had as a student at LSM. The kind and supportive environment LSM provided helped me develop the empathy and intuition I needed to become a teacher and performer. Over those two summers, I learned that music is a community endeavor, and it is greater than any one individual. Its potential to make the world a better place is limitless. I send my own students to LSM because I know how transformative the program can be. Each year I see immense musical growth from them, but I also see them evolve into thoughtful and passionate human beings. Jonathon Winter, LSM 2010-12, Boulder, CO

DIGITAL EXPANSION While the past two years have certainly posed great challenges to our world, they have also presented great opportunities for reflection, transformation, and growth. Although not able to meet in person during the summer of 2020, the LSM faculty were determined to explore the wide spectrum of technologies and virtual platforms available so that we could find and develop ways to not only continue to connect with our already existing LSM community, but to keep growing it and extending our reach.

Through the dedication and commitment of our staff and faculty, we were able to create extensive and robust year-round virtual offerings that positioned LSM as a leader in innovative and forward-thinking 21st century music education. Through the dedication and commitment of our staff and faculty, we were able to create extensive and robust year-round virtual offerings that positioned LSM as a leader in innovative and forward-thinking 21st century music education. The core components of this online curriculum—the inaugural Winter Session as well as the virtual Conducting Institute—were complemented by a series of webinars and virtual ensemble collaborations and recitals. The Winter Session gave an opportunity for new students to get a “taste” of what a summer at LSM might be like; students from across the country connected with each other and learned from our nationally renowned faculty in lessons, studio classes, and workshops. Most importantly, they got to experience the nurturing and uplifting environment that is so unique to our LSM community. Returning LSM students, alumni, and staff and faculty rejoiced in finally seeing their friends or teachers again—the atmosphere was always magical and beyond positive. We were thrilled to welcome many of these first-time LSM students to our summer academy and festival in 2021. The inaugural virtual Conducting Institute extended LSM’s reach by bringing together a cohort of professional musicians, music educators, church musicians, college students, and amateur musicians, all interested in developing and expanding their skills and perspectives as conductors. The comprehensive curriculum consisted of private lessons via Zoom, seminars, group discussions and community times, as well as an innovative, asynchronous conducting techniques program that I developed through the online platform GoReact. As mentioned before, a silver lining of this pandemic has been the need for reflection, innovation, renewal. With a forward-thinking team of staff, faculty, and board members, the generosity of donors, as well as a nurturing, uplifting, creative, and supportive organizational culture and leadership style, LSM has been able to continue to pursue growth and expanded reach—even in-midst of a global pandemic. We have proven that together we can conquer any challenge!

REMEMBERING PETER WESSLER Peter Wessler, LSM’s longtime Academy Director passed away just before Thanksgiving 2020. Since then, over 120 donors have contributed almost $15,000 to the Peter Wessler Scholarship Endowment Fund, with a final goal of reaching $25,000. Beginning with LSM 2022, the endowment will provide a scholarship for a deserving student in the hope that LSM will have the same impact on the recipient as it did for Peter’s two sons, Jonathan and Daniel. This past summer at LSM a moving dedication to Peter from his colleague Cheryl Lemmons and the Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Nancy Menk took place. This moment allowed the gathered LSM community to reflect on our collective grief and to remember Peter’s impact on LSM and each of us. Scan the QR code below to hear this beautiful tribute and music
About Peter Wessler Peter served as the LSM Academy Director for 17 years and was both the face and the backbone of the LSM summer community. Perhaps no one else had a greater impact on the LSM community than Peter. His leadership always included kindness, patience, dedication to the students, and a reverence to the program he served. Peter was devoted to LSM because of its impact on his family after his two children attended as students. With all that Peter gave for almost two decades, he often commented that he hadn’t even begun to give back what LSM gave to his family. In addition to Peter’s service to LSM, he also served for 40 years as an orchestra teacher in Peoria, Illinois. Peter served as the choir director at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, IL, and in his “retirement” from teaching, enjoyed driving a bus for Peoria Charter Coach Company.
Music humanizes us and for me is a link to many of my patients outside of their health issues.
AN ALUMNI REFLECTION I had been taking piano lessons since about age 12 from one of the music leaders at our church and quickly began helping out in small ways with various church services. A few friends who were musicians in high school shared with me their LSM experience the year prior, and I attended in 1991, the summer before my senior year of high school. At LSM I learned a lot about myself by observing the gifts and talents of others. By being open to many aspects of music that I may not have otherwise been exposed to including theory and writing, and liturgical music planning, I learned that I had some aptitude for the organ, and even singing as part of a choir. We saw each other learning about ourselves and each other in a way that influenced future choices: how we might apply ourselves to our education and our music and how to incorporate our LSM experience into the adult lives we were headed into. Based on my LSM experience to a large part, I decided I wanted to attend a smaller Lutheran college and enrolled at California Lutheran University (CLU). I had also decided I wanted a career in medicine and would someday go to medical school. Prior to entering CLU I attended their Scholarship Day where at the time I did not know the significance of the fact that the Campus Pastor and the departing Minister of Music were personally interviewing me. I was later called by the University President and offered a substantial academic scholarship that allowed me to attend. There was a pleasant hitch: they wanted me to take over a lot of what the music minister had done and be the university pianist for campus ministry – it would function as a work study and therefore also be my job while a student for my four years there. I accepted, and working with the Rev. Mark Knutson, I accompanied LBW traditional services, contemporary services, evening prayers, seasonal services, and accompanied the Chapel Choir. As I proceeded through medical school, internship, residency, and fellowship to become a cancer doctor, my music stayed with me. I have been able to play for special occasions at a variety of churches over the years. Music humanizes us and for me is a link to many of my patients outside of their health issues. Some of my patients who know me best over the years, may on occasion see in my eyes that my responsibilities are weighing on me, and in those moments may say with a smile,

Hear a beautiful tribute and musical offering remembering Peter.
I was told that I would make lifelong friends and colleagues from LSM, and at the time I didn’t fully grasp that. Now, sixteen years later I can see how true that statement was. Every time I am at church music conference, or even interacting with colleagues, I meet so many others who also went to LSM. I cannot even begin to count the number of deep friendships that came from LSM in my life.
Michael Schaner, LSM 2005–2006
[At LSM], I was surrounded by 150 other students who not only wanted to be as engrossed in the music as I did, but wanted so much to be growing in the Word of God. I was astounded. They were all like me - people who loved music, God, and all of the emotional connections that that kind of foundation provides. It felt like home almost instantaneously. By the end of that extraordinary month, there was immense definition and clarity on how I wanted my life to be.
Evelyn (Yee) Zimmer, LSM 2011
One thing that really struck me was just how much variety there in in Church Music. Going to LSM showed me how much more there is to it and how much I could be doing in the field of Church Music.

From Remember Well the Future, a 2021 panel discussion with young Church Musicians
“Dr. Helton, are you playing your piano enough lately?” I know they are checking in on me, to make sure I’m taking good care of myself, so that I can still take good care of them. As an LSM scholarship donor I hope to help a young person attend who might not otherwise be able to because of financial circumstances. I view the quality musical instruction, supportive community, and transformative experience that LSM provides as an investment in a student’s future. It is more than reason enough for me to be a donor. A recent thank you note I received from an LSM student stated that her future will be different because she attended LSM, and as an alumnus, I know she is right.

Lutheran Summer Music provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to grow musically and spiritually. Our children benefitted from attending LSM and we are pleased to be a part of helping a new generation enjoy LSM.

It is so gratifying to visit with Lutheran Summer Music students and see their eyes light up as they describe their experiences of being taught by professional teachers and being with fellow young musicians. The experience of being surrounded by musical excellence and a caring Christian community is an environment where young church musicians can thrive. The immersion into excellent Christian worship in the Lutheran tradition opens a new world that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

CREATING A LEGACY I wish that Lutheran Summer Music had existed when I was a teenager growing up in Webster City, Iowa. When I was in junior high school, I provided quiet organ music while our church organist went to communion, and in high school I started playing for services myself. I could sit and practice the organ for hours at a time. But small-town Iowa could feel pretty isolated. A music program with people who shared my interests would have been really encouraging. I attended Valparaiso University (VU) where I studied organ performance with Dr. Philip Gehring. Participation in the services at the Chapel of the Resurrection was formative, liturgically and musically. Hearing Fr. Aidan Kavanagh speak one year at the VU Institute of Liturgical Studies led me to enroll at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music where I studied liturgy and organ performance. After nearly a decade as worship and music director at Immanuel Lutheran in Valparaiso, I moved on to librarianship, putting his various studies to work as a cataloger in the JKM Library, which serves the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and McCormick Theological Seminary. All the while I continued as a choral singer and a substitute church musician. I first was introduced to LSM by Dr. Frederick Telschow, who had been the choir director at VU and who was a founding board member. I think I’ve known about Lutheran Summer Music ever since it began and it has always seemed to me like a very good idea! Recently I created an account with Thrivent and named Lutheran Music Program as the beneficiary. For a long time I had thought of providing a gift for LSM in my estate. I received a small legacy from my mother’s life insurance when she died last year. She and dad had always encouraged me as a church musician, so I knew it was the right thing to do to pass that gift on to LSM. I hope that in some small way it will help young people who are also interested in music, and maybe even church music, expand their horizons. Bill Beerman, Chicago, IL
