From the President

We did it! It is really my pleasure to present the annual report for Lutheran Music Program for the fiscal year that concluded September 30, 2012. As friends of the organization know, LMP has – for many years – carried a debt incurred by borrowing money from the principal of our endowment fund a decade ago. It is with enormous pleasure and most sincere gratitude that I report to you the full repayment of that debt and a balanced, healthy budget!

2012 was a year of growth at Lutheran Music Program. More than 30 years old now, LMP is growing into the kind of organization our founders envisioned, our board cherishes, and our constituents support.

This is no small feat and a testament to your staunch belief in the importance of our mission and work. Since 2005, we have chipped away at this debt by reinvesting any income; drawing no funds from the account toward our expenses; and permanently releasing a portion of the debt. Then, last November, we received a generous gift from the Sukup Family Foundation that repaid the last portion of the debt. Combined with a strong performance in the market, we completed the fiscal year with a modest surplus!

What this means is that we have the opportunity to once again utilize our endowment for the purpose it was intended when our founders established the fund years ago. It is increasingly challenging to keep LSM affordable for families and musically excellent.

The endowment helps us bridge that gap. As we offer new programs that expand the reach of our mission, the endowment – combined with the support so many of you provide on an annual basis – will make that growth possible.

Programmatically, 2012 was a year to “hunker down.” LSM was artistically strong, but fell short of its overall enrollment goal. An intended choral camp for middle schoolers also did not meet its enrollment goal and our partnership with ALOA to offer an elderhostel retreat during LSM’s final week went on a one-year hiatus. Hymn festivals and home events grew, and by year’s end, we reached more than 4,500 people.

Looking ahead, it is a pleasure to report that enrollment trends are well ahead of last year and we anticipate robust enrollment for LSM and our other programs. Your generosity has made LSM possible for generations of young people who are now adults serving and singing in churches across the country. Thank you for staying with us through the recession, and for your continued support for our work. We celebrate the success of the past fiscal year with you and thanks to you. We look to the future with optimism and gratitude for the many blessings entrusted to us.

Perhaps the most significant growth area in 2012 was financial stability. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our financial supporters, particularly the Sukup Family Foundation, LMP paid off IN FULL its internal debt in 2012 – several years ahead of schedule. Wise investing led to an absolute increase in the size of our endowment.

The fiscal discipline Beth Burns and her staff have brought to LMP’s daily operations has also borne fruit. Even though Lutheran Summer Music enrollment was down slightly (due to a competing Lutheran youth gathering), LMP still ended the 2012 fiscal year in the black with a budget surplus and a cash reserve.

And we did this without raising LSM tuition in spite of rising costs. To keep LSM affordable for students and families, we have not raised LSM base tuition above $2,995 since 2008. And, we are pleased to be able to keep our LSM base tuition at this low level for LSM 2013 as well.

Growth also occurred in LMP’s programs. Although LSM did not grow in quantity, we know it grew in quality. LSM 2012 students were second to none in both musicianship and in commitment to expressing their faith through music. The LSM 2012 faculty was first-rate and unmatched in its dedication to “transforming lives and connecting people through faith and music.”

Finally, growth occurred in leadership. We added significant new talent to our board by bringing on Rev. Dick Koehneke, Becky Schultz, and Barry Swanquist. The LMP national staff, which Beth leads brilliantly, added Megan Hasche to an already “allstar” group. Board and staff remain committed to our vision: “renewing churches and communities through music and worship for the sake of the world.”

With the help of you, our supporters, this growth will continue in 2013. We cherish, celebrate, and deeply thank you for your support.

LSM 2012:

Familiar Partner, New Faces In 2012, the 31st annual Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival (LSM) did something remarkable: it didn’t move. For the first time, the Lutheran Music Program board of directors elected to extend its partnership with the program’s host campus beyond three years. After a detailed selection process and deliberation, it was determined that Luther College will host LSM through 2014.

So, the 137 high school students, 12 interns, 34 faculty, 10 counselors, and 12 staff who made up our community once again found themselves on a campus ideally suited to LSM’s needs with core values that closely align with our own.

Music, faith, and community thrived at LSM 2012.

Music

Artistic highlights of the summer began with our first foray into “Lawn Chair Night,” a weekly free concert on the lawn of the courthouse in downtown Decorah, IA. LSM’s faculty brass quintet, Praetorius Brass, entertained a large local crowd on a stunning June night. That visibility led to increased attendance by local residents at the LSM Concert & Recital Series, the 50+ free performances we offer throughout the festival. Themed faculty recitals honored last summer’s Olympic Games (“Music from Around the World”) and highlighted contemporary composers (“Music Since You Were Born”). They complemented traditional faculty performances by the Omega String Quartet, Movēre Woodwind Quintet, Sine Nomine Vocal Ensemble, and Praetorius Brass. Our guest artist was Flying Forms Baroque Ensemble, an early music trio from St. Paul, MN, that thrilled our students with Bach and beyond. Students were also treated to a special field trip to Winona, MN, to hear internationallyrenowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis perform his first-ever classical chamber recital.

When we turned to student performances during week four, audiences were again treated to excellence. After three intense weeks of lessons, rehearsals, and hours in the practice room, the final days of LSM were jam-packed with recitals as every student performed as a soloist and with their small ensemble.

Our large ensembles also presented culminating concerts led by Dr. Christopher Aspaas of St. Olaf College (choir); Dr. Spencer Martin of Luther College (orchestra); and Dr. Jeffrey Doebler of Valparaiso University (band).

Community

At LSM 2012, community life soared once again and students created memories for a lifetime. Our committed student life team led dorm devotions and recreation activities, hiked to the Whippy Dip with their counseling groups for ice cream, and chaperoned a memorable 4th of July field trip to Historic Forestville State Park in Minnesota. Counselors always provide critical emotional guidance and support, particularly for new students who embark on an important pre-college experience when they attend LSM. Our broader community continues to grow as well, with 23 colleges attending the LSM College Fair (including the 19 institutional members of the Collegiate Partnership Program!) and dozens of congregations supporting their member youth’s attendance at LSM through the Young Musicians Partnership.

Faith

Lutheran students, along with young musicians from many different faith traditions, were welcomed to LSM by Rev. Wayne Weissenbuehler, who returned as the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Endowed Chaplain Chair. He shared the history and liturgical traditions of Lutheran worship and led our community in the theme “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation.” Throughout the summer, worship returned to this theme while the LSM Hymn Festival fully revealed it through readings, hymns, anthems, and special offerings led by Dr. Zebulon Highben, the Paul Bouman Endowed Chapel Choir Chair.

All summer, LSM students actively participated in worship as cantors, readers, crucifers, and special musicians. They developed self-confidence as they connected with peers who shared their commitment to service and this inner change showed in their actions toward others. One night during Evening Prayer, we watched a returning student move her entire group of friends to join a new student who was sitting by himself. Afterward, she simply said: “No one worships alone at LSM.”

Conclusion

After 31 years, it is clear that LSM still works. Students are challenged, inspired, and transformed. Many see the possibility of music as a vocation for the first time. Others are affirmed in their faith. Nearly all leave LSM more confident than when they arrived, ready to share their gifts with churches and schools in cities and towns from Hawaii to New York and everywhere in between: “My summers here are so precious to me as a renewal of my faith, and I take what I learn to my home congregation.”

Beyond LSM

…to transform lives and connect people through faith and music.

The mission statement for Lutheran Music Program does not mention LSM, although the four-week academy certainly fulfills that mission effectively year after year. Our mission challenges us to reach further and serve people of all ages, skill levels, and economic means in locations across the country. In the past fiscal year, activities beyond LSM included:

Student, faculty, and alumni performances at events in Delano, Forestville, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, Roseville, and Red Wing, MN; St. Louis, MO; Elizabethtown, PA; Frankenmuth and Ann Arbor, MI; and River Forest, IL.

Hymn Festivals in Sarasota, FL and Minneapolis, MN. In Florida, LSM’s Chapel Choir Conductor Zebulon Highben joined current board members and former summer staff members Bishop Robert Rimbo and Dr. Martin Jean to lead an afternoon of singing based on LSM’s 2011 Worship Theme “Through the Church the Song Goes On.” In Minneapolis, LSM alumni served as instrumentalists and choir members as Dr. David Cherwien led a hymn festival at Mount Olive Lutheran Church to benefit the Metro Lutheran, a Twin Cities based monthly newspaper.

Dozens of presentations about LSM took place at high schools in Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

“At Home with LSM” events took place in Michigan, Minnesota, and Washington and featured current students and alumni in performances.

A partnership with Augsburg Fortress Publishers allowed us to participate in and present at Winter Clinics for church musicians across the country.

Advancement

Hundreds of individuals, public and private grantmakers, churches, and businesses from across the country make annual contributions to Lutheran Music Program. This network of generosity enables us to provide life-changing programming like LSM at an affordable cost.

Last year, more than 650 donors contributed to Lutheran Music Program and gifts of all sizes made an extraordinary difference for those we serve. Here are a few highlights: Give to the Max Day is becoming an annual tradition at Lutheran Music Program. This one-day online fundraising event for Minnesota charities takes place in November. In 2011, we raised $6,030 from 76 donors in 24 hours. Wow! We’re grateful to the many congregations who provide direct support for Lutheran Music Program. Every year, we receive contributions of all sizes to support LSM. Last year, we were particularly grateful for the $89.23 donated by Sunday school students from Zion Lutheran Church in Terra Bella, CA.

It is with pleasure that Lutheran Music Program shares its 2011/2012 financial summary, based on its unqualified 2012 audited financial statement, for your Admissions, Academy & Festivalcash flow $765,184 review. Lutheran Music Program received $15,000 from the Rupert Dunklau Foundation (Lincoln, NE). This generous grant was used toward student scholarships for LSM 2012. It comprised 10% of our total scholarship budget for last year and helped ensure that every qualified young person was able to attend LSM – regardless of their ability to pay.

We continue to benefit from the ongoing support of the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

LSM has a great relationship with our host community of Decorah, IA. Last summer, nine Decorah-area businesses provided financial or in-kind support for our performance activities.

Participants included Country Inn by Carlson, Dragonfly Books, Hotel Winneshiek, Java John’s Coffeehouse, Kephart’s Music Center, La Rana Bistro, McCaffrey’s Dolce Vita, Rubaiyat Restaurant, and Storey Kenworthy.

Program Patron sponsorships also helped cover the cost of performance activities at LSM. Last summer, 30 individual donors provided support for the LSM Concert & Recital Series. Of particular note was a generous contribution by an anonymous benefactor to underwrite the 2012 LSM Festival Choir Concert in memory of N.T. and Florence Rykken.

Wenger Corporation (Owatonna, MN) has been an extraordinary friend to Lutheran Music Program in recent years. In addition to sponsoring several events during the LSM Concert & Recital Series, Wenger made a contribution last summer to cover the cost of busing for students to attend a concert by world-renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis in Winona, MN. Thank you, Wenger! continues to support our work through initiatives like Thrivent Choice. Young Musicians Partnership

The Young Musicians Partnership (YMP) is a program for congregations which establish local scholarships for member youth who attend LSM. Students from enrolled congregations receive a match grant of 33% to that local scholarship and an additional 10% tuition discount. In 2012, nearly one half of all students came to Lutheran Summer Music through the sponsorship of YMP congregations.
