additional program notes by Jeffrey

I am truly honored that Carol Wessler has sponsored the 2023 LSM Festival Concert Band directorship in honor of her late husband, Peter Wessler (1957–2020). Peter was my good friend and one of the most sincere, thoughtful, and kind people I have ever known. He was also an outstanding educator and a fine musician. In his role as LSM Academy Director, Peter and I worked together for many years. I had previously served in that position, so the two of us could share experiences and problem-solving strategies. Peter and I shared a passion for music education, which included an intense commitment to Lutheran Summer Music. I’m dedicating our concert tonight to Peter Wessler, one of LSM’s most devoted servants.

Guy Foreman spent most of his career as a band teacher in LaPorte, Indiana, and conducted the Michigan City (Indiana) Municipal Band for an astounding 60 years! For the past 40 years, this fanfare has been played to open each concert of the Michigan City Municipal Band. The music is based on the famous song Back Home Again, in Indiana by James Hanley and Ballard MacDonald.

Seminole Snake Dance 2020

Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate

b. 1968

Composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma. He’s one of the most successful Native American classical composers, and has had his music performed by important orchestras in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Detroit, Dallas, and Minneapolis. Mr. Tate is an Emmy Award-winner and holds the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Seminole Snake Dance is dedicated to Seminole Chief Enoch Kelly Haney, who was as sculptor, and a member of both houses of Oklahoma legislature. Scholars believe that the snake dance was originally a water ceremony, because snakes were the traditional guardians of springs. You’ll hear the snake dance melody majestically quoted in the opening measures. After that, the work gets significantly faster and focuses on rhythm (mostly in 7/8 time), but you’ll also hear the snake dance melody stated many times by different combinations of instruments.

Tudor Sketches 2013

Hampton Court Good Queen Bess Hunting at Chobham

William Owens

b. 1963

William Owens is an African American composer who grew up in Gary, Indiana, then had a career of more than 30 years as a music educator in Texas. He is one of today’s most successful band composers, having published more than 200 works. Among his many accomplishments was being commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association to compose for one of the all-state bands in Indiana’s bicentennial year. He will conduct the Indiana Junior All-State Band in 2024. Tudor Sketches is based on musical styles from the time of the House of Tudor, which ruled England and Ireland from 1485–1603. The work is especially successful in showcasing the timbres of each section in the band.

Rhythm Stand 2004

Jennifer Higdon

b. 1962

For many years, Jennifer Higdon taught at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Music, as well as three Grammy Awards. Dr. Higdon’s music has been performed around the world, and she has been commissioned by ensembles that include the National Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Indianapolis Symphony. According to Dr. Higdon, Rhythm Stand “pays tribute to the

THURSDAY, JULY 20 3

constant presence of rhythm in our lives, from the pulse of a heart beating to the rhythmic sounds of the world around us.” The composition presents many layers of interlocking rhythms. It also serves as comic relief on the program, resulting from the tempo, the variety of rhythms, and the title. It will be apparent, right from the beginning, why the piece is called Rhythm STAND.

Kingsfold 2015 English traditional arr. Johnnie Vinson, b. 1944

An English traditional melody, Kingsfold gives us the chance to demonstrate the beautiful, blended sounds of the concert band. You can find hymns with the Kingsfold tune as hymns 444 and 846 in Lutheran Service Book (what we at LSM call the “chocolate” hymnal) and as hymns 251, 412, 611, and 636 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship (the “cranberry” hymnal). The creator of this band arrangement is Dr. Johnnie Vinson, retired director of bands from Auburn University.

20 de Julio 2010 Hernan Olano

b. 1957

On July 20, 1810, Colombia declared its independence. 20 de Julio was composed for Colombia’s bicentennial. Hernan Olano is a composer based in Bogotá, Colombia. The work is in the form of the Colombian dance, the pasillo fiestero, which is described by Mr. Olano as a “joyful Andean rhythm from the early nineteenth century, born in Colombia to celebrate independence and today very popular in the Andean region and Central America.”

March: The Klaxon 1929

Henry Fillmore

1881–1956

Henry Fillmore played trombone in circus bands and was a conductor and guest conductor for professional bands and school bands. The Klaxon March, also known as March of the Automobiles, was composed by Maestro Fillmore for his band’s performance at the 1930 Cincinnati Automobile Show. In the third section of the march (known as the “trio”), you’ll hear a lovely lyrical melody from the horns, supported by the alto saxophones. Imagine this melody being played on an instrument that Mr. Fillmore created the Klaxophone which featured twelve Klaxon horns! Mr. Fillmore was an especially popular composer, who sold even more music because he used seven pseudonyms: Harold Bennett, Ray Hall, Harry Hartley, Al Hayes, Will Huff, Henrietta Moore, and Gus Beans.

FESTIVAL BAND CONCERT 4

Intermission

Sacred Spaces 2020 third performance

b. 1968

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, Dr. Maugans, Windiana, and I had the privilege of commissioning Dr. Kirk O’Riordan to compose Sacred Spaces. The premiere took place on March 2, 2023, here in the Chapel of the Resurrection, with the composer in attendance. Prof. O’Riordan serves as director of bands at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, and holds the D.M.A. degree from Arizona State University. He is a long-time friend of Dr. Maugans. Here are Dr. O’Riordan’s notes on the Sacred Spaces:

The piece is essentially a meditation on several well-known Christian hymns in an empty cathedral, bathed in light from stained glass. The [band] is used primarily to replicate the reflective acoustical properties of such a space, as well as to provide a sense of power and grandeur. While Stacy’s original idea and our subsequent conversations on what the piece might be like had more or less fully developed the concept of the piece (indeed, much of the piece was composed already) before the unrest of 2020, looking back I feel like the person doing the meditating might very well have been motivated to do so by that unrest

With that said, there is not a literal story here one should not understand this piece as [a] direct attempt at creating a narrative. Rather, this is a collection of impressions, abstracted and expressionistic. The hymns are presented as memories, as ruminations; while recognizable, they are different, too…altered by time and by their own timelessness.

Where the Stormy Winds Blow 2022 fourth performance Jesse Ayers

b. 1951

Where the Stormy Winds Blow was commissioned by the Michigan City Municipal Band (MCMB), Michigan City, Indiana. The premiere took place on July 14, 2022, with Jeffrey Scott Doebler conducting, Richard AmRhein serving as vocalist and story-teller, and the composer in attendance. The MCMB has the privilege of commissioning a new composition each year, because of a special music projects endowment through the Unity Foundation of LaPorte County, thanks to the estate of Ruth Rohrabaugh (The Ted and Ruth Rohrabaugh Fund). This allows the MCMB to foster the creation of new music that is first enjoyed by audiences at the Guy Foreman Amphitheater in Michigan City, then with bands and audiences around the

world. Where the Stormy Winds Blow features a narrator who recounts the tale through spoken word and singing. The composition is based on a true story that occurred on Lake Michigan in 1873. Daniel Greco’s narration will give you the details.

Following acknowledgement of the performers, we conclude with song and prayer

EVENING PRAYER

This liturgy uses the chocolate-colored worship book Lutheran Service Book, abbreviated as LSB in this bulletin. abendmusik How Great Thou Art 2023

Seth Carlson ORGAN

arr. Dan Miller b. 1954

tr. Jerry Brubaker

This setting of How Great Thou Art was commissioned by Seth Carlson and the Westminster Christian High School Symphonic Band, Palmetto Bay, Florida, in loving memory of Christopher Bobson (2005–2023). The arrangement was created by church musician, composer, and conductor Dan Miller, then transcribed for band by Jerry Brubaker. Mr. Brubaker is the president of the Association of Concert Bands, which is the national professional association representing adult concert bands. He is an accomplished composer, a professional horn player, and was a member of the US Navy Band for more than 30 years. During part of that time, Mr. Brubaker served the Navy Band as chief arranger. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music. Here are Mr. Carlson’s notes on the work: Christopher Bobson was in his senior year at Westminster Christian School in Miami, Florida, when he was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident this past January. He was a beloved trombonist in Mr. Carlson’s band. How Great Thou Art was sung at Chris’s memorial service and was chosen as the hymn tune to be arranged for band by the Bobson Family and Mr. Carlson.

Conductor

Jeffrey Scott Doebler has served as director of music education and bands at Valparaiso University since 1992, after teaching in the public schools of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Shakopee, Minnesota. He has been involved with Lutheran Summer Music in most years since 1994. Dr. Doebler was the recipient of the 2020–21 Valparaiso University Excellence in Teaching Award Mentoring/Advising, as well as the 2005 Valparaiso University Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2018, he was named a Distinguished Hoosier by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb. Prof. Doebler earned degrees in music education from Luther College (B.A.), Valparaiso University (M.M.), and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.). His 41-year career in music education has achieved a unique balance of conducting, teacher preparation, leadership, and working with musicians from the beginning through professional levels, but all aspects of his vocation have had an ultimate focus on teaching. He has been recognized for teaching excellence by peers, colleagues, and students, including awards from the Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA), Valparaiso University, Luther College, Sigma Alpha Iota, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the Confucius Institute. Dr. Doebler was a quarter-finalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award in 2014. In 2022, he was presented the Sino-US People’s Friendship Award. In a typical year, Dr. Doebler works with over 3000 students. He has appeared professionally in 30 states, Canada, Malta, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and China. Professor Doebler is a former president and state editor of the IMEA. He designed the IMEA All-State Future Music Educators Colloquium, a program that has been replicated in many other states. Dr. Doebler is a former president of the Indiana Bandmasters Association (IBA). For the IBA, he regularly conducts the AllRegion and All-District Honor Bands, he conducted the All-State Band in 2011, and the Junior All-State Band in 2014. He is the first person to conduct at all four levels of IBA honor bands. Dr. Doebler is founder of a professional-level concert band, Windiana, which has toured China ten times, and has also toured Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. Windiana performed for the national convention of the Association of Concert Bands in 2011, the National Chinese Language Conference in 2009, and a headline concert at Carnegie Hall on December 29, 2022. Dr. Doebler serves as concert band conductor for Lutheran Summer Music, the national Lutheran high school music camp. He is conductor of the 155year-old Michigan City Municipal Band. Professor Doebler conducts the handbell choir at Valparaiso University and is the Indiana Chair for the Handbell Musicians of America. In 2018, Dr. Doebler conducted the Indiana All-State Handbell Choir. It is believed that this was the first all-state handbell choir in the nation.

FESTIVAL BAND CONCERT 26

ANNOUNCING LSM 2024

June 30–July 28

Valparaiso University

I am who I am because of LSM. Almost every day I reference something from LSM or rely on the experience and growth I gained at LSM.

Now is the perfect time to start planning for next summer! More students each day are enrolling early for LSM 2024, joining the long legacy of LSM students returning year after year.

To enroll early for LSM 2024 or nominate a new student who would thrive at LSM, contact MaryLynn Mennicke, Dean and Director of Admissions

(admissions@lutheransummermusic.org; 612.879.9555 ext. 2).
