Welcome to the 8th edition of our Bull Sale Catalogue and our 2nd annual “Pick of the Pen” Online Bull Sale.

What a crazy, unpredictable and challenging year 2015 was. We watched as our hay and pasture land got decimated by freezing temperatures in May, then dried out by a lack of rain until September. We also dealt with record hay prices and extreme volatility in the cattle markets last fall. This certainly can be an interesting business to be a part of.

On the plus side, even with the volatility we saw in the markets last fall, those prices for calves are currently the second highest prices on record!

Also, with the recent repeal of COOL I believe we will see less market volatility and have already seen cull prices strengthen. Combine that with our winter being relatively warm and open, we are all able to stretch our feed stacks a little further. As long as it rains this spring life is good.

We have thirteen 2 year old bulls for sale this year as well as a select group of open replacement heifer calves. These animals have endured our strict “no excuse” culling program. We cull for calving ease, conformation, temperament, and performance. Our animals are raised on mom’s milk alone up to weaning, with no creep feed ever. Post weaning we limit their grain/minerals by pail feeding. They then receive free choice grass hay which composes the majority of their diet (no silage).

We feel raising our animals this way allows them to develop naturally creating an animal with longevity, few health issues, and a quiet disposition. Fat looks good, wins shows, and hides a lot of imperfections, but seldom is it functional. You will find our bulls to be healthy, in good body condition and very athletic as they walk pastures year round.

When it comes to selecting replacement seed stock we don’t believe looking at a picture in a catalogue or a video online necessarily tells the whole story. We’re firm believers in travelling and seeing first hand, the genetics we’re about to invest in.

That is why on March 1, 4 & 5 from 1-4pm MST we are hosting bull viewings at the farm. The cattle will be penned, and we will have supplemental information sheets available with current weights & scrotal measurements. Havoc is an ET bull that we had our eye on.

His sire is known for leaving structurally correct cattle with good performance, and Six Mile describes his dam as “having a stunning phenotype with picture perfect udder structure”. Havoc’s first heifers calved last spring and did not disappoint with picture perfect udders. If you are looking to build a maternal cow herd look no further.

We tried to purchase Infiniti’s sire back in 2010, but fell short. Luckily Infiniti came along with a very similar profile to that of his father. When combined with the fact that he has a moderate BW and a rate of gain near the top of what Six Mile had to offer, it made him an obvious choice. His dam is another phenotypic gem as she was part of Six Mile’s show string.

103W’s dam was simply one of those no miss kind of cows you wish you had a whole herd of!

103W himself was a very correct, large scrotaled, performance sire that could hold his own against any bull out there! In hindsight I really should have made a better effort to get a picture of him. Unfortunately we lost 103W to an injury a few years back. So, be sure to check out his progeny on offer as they will be his last.

One Iron, Home Raised, Commercial Open Heifer Calves We are the third generation to raise a family on this piece of ground we call Lust Farms, and that truly is how long we have been building our commercial cow herd. I have personally been involved in tracking BW, WW, ADG and pedigrees for the commercial cattle for the past 25 years. During that time we have seen our weaning weights increase while our birth weights and mature cow size have dropped. I have long been a believer that maternal cattle without growth are not economical, but neither are big growthy cattle that become too extreme.

This year we had 24 of 35 heifer calves survive step one of our rigorous culling program and make it into our replacement heifer pen. We will select 10 to sell as a package in our sale, keep 10 for ourselves, and cull the rest. I feel even the most established of herds must have a strict culling program to keep the herd moving forward. The heifers for sale will be on display at our Bull Viewings where we will have detailed supplement sheets available. All of these heifers are sired by red angus bulls with the majority of them being direct granddaughters of our own home raised sire Red LFA Norse Prince 103W.

Bronx’s dam is a young cow that has made her mark and is definitely on my radar to be one of the good ones. On her first two calves she has an avg. BW of 95lbs, AWW of 673lbs, and a WI of109. A definite herd sire candidate here.

This mating between 103W and 146X really clicked. Brando is double bred to Red Crowfoot 6100S and exemplifies growth and performance. I believe he will be the heaviest bull we have in the sale this year. If your cows are able to handle a slightly larger BW, you will reap the benefits of the calf crop he will produce.

Brier is a fantastic bull. If we didn’t have so much Norse Prince blood in our herds already I would consider retaining him for our own use. His dam is a moderate framed cow that has perfect feet and udder structure still at 11 years of age. And, she has posted an avg. 104 WI on her bull calves. Lots of eye appeal and a pedigree to build your herd on.

Branson is the total package. He combines calving ease with performance. His dam 163Y is quickly rising to the top of our herd as a consistent producer of quality herd sires and replacement heifers. She currently has an avg. 112 WI on her bull calves and an avg. 104 WI on her heifer calves. Most cows make good bulls or heifers, but it takes a special cow to do an equally good job on both. When picking feature bulls we really debated between Beauford and Bacardi (Lot 9) to represent Havoc’s blood line. The deciding factor in the end was the age of the dams.

Fancy 176Y is a younger cow with three calves under her belt. With her 2015 bull calf posting a WI of 106, we are patiently waiting for her to give us a replacement heifer.

Why feature a bull with a 104lbs BW? The answer to that question is Lakme 908W. This cow can occasionally add some extra BW to her calves, but she also produces some of the most stunning females we have raised. We mated her to Havoc twice now hoping for a heifer calf. Bacardi is the first of two Havoc sons she has given us. If you are looking for a bull that should leave top cut heifers and can look past a little extra BW, Bacardi may be the bull for you.

Brewster is a bull I’d recommend for use on large heifers. When you consider the calving ease of 245T in his pedigree along with his body type and moderate birth weight I believe this guy could do the job.

SEMEN TESTING/PHYSICAL INSPECTION All of the sale bulls will be palpated, measured, and inspected by a certified vet after Feb. 10, 2016, making them eligible for insurance purposes. Semen testing will be done by a certified vet ASAP weather permitting, no later than April 20, 2016. If the bull(s) in question fails to pass a semen evaluation conducted while in our possession Lust Farms will take ownership of the bull(s) in question and give a full refund of the amount collected back to the purchaser, no more.

WINTERING All animals staying at Lust Farms will be wintered at no charge until delivery or May 1, 2016 whichever comes first. Any animals remaining after May 1, 2016 must have prior arrangements made and may be charged a boarding fee. All animals become the purchaser’s risk once sold. We strongly encourage every animal purchased be insured. In the event that, while in Lust Farms possession, an animal(s) suffers an injury which affects their breeding ability Lust Farms will refund the insurance premium back to the purchaser, no more. If the

animal(s) is not insured the purchaser assumes sole responsibility for the loss.

DELIVERY Receive free delivery within a 100 km radius of Medicine Hat, AB. Delivery will begin after April 1, 2016 at our earliest convenience. If you are beyond the 100Km radius or would like

to make alternate arrangements, please contact us prior to making your purchase.

PAYMENT All bids are in CDN $ and settlements shall be made in CDN $. Once notified by Lust Farms of your winning bid(s), cheques are to be made payable to Lust Farms and must be received

by March 14, 2016. Cheques are to be mailed to:

GENERAL Any amendments to the sale terms/conditions must be made in writing by Lust Farms and listed on the bill of sale. Lust Farms reserves the right to cancel or postpone the auction, or remove specific sale lots without notice if we deem such action necessary.

PLACING BIDS All bids are to be made in good faith. Please review the sale information to your satisfaction prior to placing a bid on any sale lot. Once the auction begins (March 5 @ Noon MST) you will have the opportunity to enter your bid as an exact bid or a proxy bid. After a bid is placed, you will be asked to confirm your bid again before proceeding. Please ensure that

your bid amount is correct and placed on the proper sale lot. Bids cannot be reversed once they are entered.

PROXY BIDS A proxy bid is the maximum amount you are willing to pay for a sale lot. Proxy bids may be entered at any time during the auction. Meaning you can place an exact bid until you choose to enter a proxy bid. The auction website will automatically bid on your behalf up to your maximum bid amount. Your proxy bid is completely confidential and will not be revealed to the public and can not be viewed by anyone other than you.

EXTENDED BIDDING Extended bidding is extra time added to the original end time of the auction. If any item gets a bid in the final three minutes of the auction. bidding for that item will extend for three minutes to a maximum of 30 minutes. This means the auction is set to close @ 8:00 pm MST, but certain sale lots may extend beyond their original close time until no bid is received in the final three minutes. No sale item will extend beyond 8:30 pm MST.

ONLINE BIDDING Bidding is to be done in minimum $200 increments. In the event two bids of the same amount are entered, the first bid received (eg. proxy bid) will be considered the winning bid.
