Designed by Mies van der Rohe as a quiet country retreat, this glass-and-steel structure reflects the modern architect’s signature style. It’s situated on a sparse piece of acreage that yields all attention to the building itself, and the fully restored 1951 interior is open for tours five days a week.

One of just 14 Baha’i temples in the world (and the only one in the United States), this intricate, dome-roofed structure was designed by Louis Bourgeois and completed in 1951 after 30 years of construction.

In accordance with the Baha’i style, the nine-sided temple is surrounded by a series of nine pathways, all of which are surrounded by nine gardens.

So, first of all, intelligence and energy are the two fundamental inputs. With good ideas and the ability to move and manipulate matter, we can do everything else. Nobody sits like the French.

Wind the clock back one hundred years or so to a moment after the Charleston was gaining steam, but before movies were offering sound. You are in the savory nucleus of Paris, the corner of Boulevard Saint­Germain and Rue Saint­Benoît. Here is a venerable cafe that has been serving crepes and coffee since 1914 in its present location, a watering hole for a (mostly) civilized Serengeti of artists and thinkers as well as busy boulevardiers and slacking flâneurs during the period between the War to End all Wars and the Good War. You’re sitting under the green marquee with lettering the color of Midas’ fingertips surrounded on all sides by the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, and James Joyce. Immense in their world as whales in a pond, they assembled at Les Deux Magots seeking inspiration and applause from the spirited (and spirit­aided) knockdown debates and the bohemian atmosphere that flooded the cafe.

Listen closely and you can hear Hemingway stage whispering his poetry, and see him working feverishly on The Sun Also Rises, stained with the blood and smoke of the Great War’s trenches. A few feet away and liquored up on Swiss wine, James Joyce is picking a fight (then hiding behind Hemingway’s bulk) while Pablo Picasso is hitting on his future muse Dora Maar there. The mean girls of Surreal­ ism, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, and Man Ray, hold court at their table by the cafe entrance, where, between scarfing down croque monsieurs and macarons and working on their mani­ festo, they hiss insults at anyone whose looks they don’t like.

London has its fair share of exquisite grand historic hotels. None can be said to compete with Claridge’s, the landmark Mayfair hotel in the city’s most prestigious and expensive borough. It’s one of the best five-star heritage hotels in the world, unrivalled for its combination of timeless elegance, understated luxury and near-faultless service, delivered by confident and well-trained staff at the top of their game.

Gliding through the hotel’s famous dark-wood revolving doors onto the gleaming Art Deco checkerboard floor feels elegant and indulgent. The dazzling lobby buzzes with staff. Larger-than-life flower arrangements by luxury London florist McQueens Flowers trim a chandelier-topped table. Opposite the smart reception, an elegant lift is manned by a dapper attendant in tails. It’s a fantasy world that feels far removed from the buzz of central London.

Taking in the sight of this magnificent red brick building from the outside, it’s impossible to imagine that Claridge’s began as a hotel in a single house. It was run by William and Marianne Claridge, who, in an ambitious move to expand, bought the adjoining five buildings in 1854. When Richard D’Oyly Carte – the owner of rival London hotel The Savoy – acquired Claridge’s in 1893, he demolished the original buildings. He also hired Charles William Stephens, the architect of iconic London department store Harrods, to build the Claridge’s we see today.

Claridge’s has always had a reputation as a haven for the elite. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert stayed in the 1860s. In 1945, Winston Churchill visited after his election defeat. In the 1950s, in shimmied a stream of screen stars: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Yul Brynner, Bing Crosby and Spencer Tracy, who is said to have exclaimed he’d rather go to Claridge’s than heaven when he died. In the Noughties, a new generation of British creatives took over. Supermodel Kate Moss celebrated her 30th birthday here, while fashion designers Jade Jagger and Lulu Guinness are said to have called the hotel their ultimate treat.

Claridge’s is fresh from a refurb several years in the making, which includes a five-storey basement home to a subterranean spa and an otherworldly rooftop suite. Yet its atmosphere and design remain firmly rooted in the Jazz Age when it was transformed into an Art Deco icon.

Many of the features added at this point are still intact, like the front entrance, a façade of Roman stone, the opulent ballroom with its gilded ceilings, where flappers and the bright young things of London once danced the Charleston, and the shimmering glass screens in the Foyer & Reading Room. The latter is a hit for breakfast, lunch and the Claridge’s famous Afternoon Tea, a hotel institution.

“Shosa is of great importance in Zen Buddhism. In fact, we make no distinction between the way of moving and the actual experience of Buddhism. Your attitude and behaviour are equivalent to the principles of Zen Buddhism itself. You could say that shosa is Buddhism… In other words, you’re in the right place.”

I am sitting at a large conference table in front of a whiteboard. The room is wide, and the floor is covered with a bright green carpet. This is the study hall of Shokaku-ji, a temple near Nishi-Nippori Station in Arakawa, a northeastern neighbourhood of Tokyo, just behind Yanaka, which is known for its nostalgic vibe. The temple, like the neighbourhood itself, has no particularly remarkable appearance and is not indicated on any tourist map. Shokaku-Ji is perfectly inconspicuous.

The person who runs the temple, however, is quite the opposite. Her name is Yuko Yamada, and she is a monk in Soto Zen, one of the biggest Zen sects in Japan. While women can become Zen monks, there are noticeably fewer women than men. Apart from being a woman, Yuko Yamada’s journey has been quite peculiar. “Even though my parents were followers of Soto Zen, I first became a Franciscan nun,” she says. “I was at university, far from my parents and in a completely new environment, living all alone. At the time, my mind was somewhat troubled. When my best friend invited me to go to church, I was struck by the beauty of the experience: the light through the stained glass, the wonderful hymns…

It felt like a dream world to me. From then on, I went to church every Sunday and sang in the choir.”

Eight years later, she decided to enter a remote monastery in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo. “I found it to be a beautiful world and loved wearing the nun’s habit. Three years later, a pastor visited to talk about other religions. Through him, I learned about zazen (Zen meditation), and something clicked in my mind. I felt it was closer to my roots and wanted to try it. Seeing that this wasn’t possible within the monastery, I had to leave. I felt: it’s now or never.”

The round openings in the ceiling of this former car service centre inspired us to create an exotic patio. The garden gives out onto an office space with large windows, meaning the workers look out onto the garden year-round. That is why the garden had to be evergreen. To create visual appeal in summer and winter, we used lots of evergreen plants with a tropical feel that can thrive in our European climate.

The existing concrete floor was excavated to a depth of 40 centimetres and topped up with roof garden substrate. We laid gravel grids on the substrate for stability and created seating areas so the garden could also be used for lunch and meetings, becoming an additional (outdoor) space. The centrally planted silk tree (Albizia julibrissin) connects the courtyard garden with the outside world and will provide transparent shade over time. This is the first project where we went all the way with substrate as a paving material: sustainable, fertile, and very user-friendly.

Another popular family hang­out, this blue flag beach normally has a lifeguard on watch. There are a few stones near the crystal­clear water, but we’ll forgive them. Head to the marina for windsurfing, sailing and kayaking, or stroll on the palm tree promenade, stopping at ice­cream parlours and sun­bleached restaurants.

Until around 1848, this was the sole hang­out of fishing families. That was until French botanist Jean Closier arrived.

He grew hollyhock (malvaceae in Latin, or alcea rosea) for his perfume; it’s where the beach got its name. Now it’s a sporty stretch with volleyball courts and one kilometre of butter­yellow sand.

Popular with families and those looking for a (slightly) quieter alternative to the city beaches, El Saler is a white sandy beach with dunes like small mountains.

Two restaurants with sea views compete for attention at the entrance – both serve paella and traditional nibbles.

The little town of Lier contains three extraordinary clocks constructed in the 1930s by the local watchmaker and amateur astronomer Louis Zimmer. He began by building a beautiful astronomical clock on the outside wall of an abandoned tower from the 14th century. It features two globes decorated in blue and gold and ten clock faces with signs of the zodiac, tides in Lier, phases of the moon, days of the month, months of the year and other arcane facts.

Zimmer went on to design a Wonder Clock which he exhibited at New York’s World Fair in 1935.

This oversized bronze statue of Pablo Picasso’s head was carved in 2008 by the Dutch artist Gabriël Sterk. You can find his statues of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh in La Rotonde in Aix-en-Provence and in front of the asylum in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, respectively. This one stands on a terrace with a panoramic view overlooking the countryside around the hilltop town of Mougins. The statue is hard to miss as it is 2,4 metres tall and weighs 500 kilos. The work is a tribute to Pablo Picasso, who lived and worked in Mougins from 1961 until 1973, the year he died. The famous artist’s studio used to be housed in the building where the town’s tourist office is now located. He and his wife Jacqueline Roque lived in Mas de Notre Dame de Vie, next to the eponymous chapel.
