9. Women in coffee

The starting point

«Coffee is female»

OF THE COFFEE PLANTATION STAFF ARE WOMEN OF THE COFFEE FARMS ARE RUN BY WOMEN

Despite this, strong gender disparity still exists in terms of access to education, credit and trade

Female work in the coffee plantations IS NOT VALUED

Our sustainable pink dream

Women in Coffee is Caffè Vergnano’s women-focused social sustainability project created by CEO Carolina Vergnano, and launched in 2018.

Women in Coffee, in collaboration with the International Women’s Coffee Alliance, was founded with the aim of supporting women working in small coffee plantations.

The project has since evolved, widening its mandate and becoming an inclusive vessel for initiatives that support culture and education, two fundamental tools in terms of driving emancipation and creating value.

Our chapters

Dominican Republic

Honduras Honduras

2019 Chapter

The very first project fundedwas the purchase of a roasting machine that formed the basis of a small business run by 20 women in the Hondo Valle county of the Dominican Republic.

2020 -2022 Chapter

Our second fundraising led to the creation of a library for the community of Cual Bicicleta in Marcala, Honduras. A gathering place for women to achieve their full potential, for children to study, learn and have fun.

2023 Chapter

We are moving forward with the project in Honduras, providing the equipment for the library and building a cafè and a local Academy for training.

Our chapters

Guatemala

2024 Chapter

The practice of grafting coffee plants in Guatemala has become increasingly widespread as a response to climate change and the challenges it brings to coffee cultivation. Root grafting is a precision technique performed manually, and Guatemalan women are often involved in this process. Women in Coffee supports a competition that has been taking place in Guatemala for years, involving many women from different farms across the country. This not only provides employment opportunities but also allows them to enhance themselves and their important role in rural areas.

Dominican Republic

2024 Chapter

Going back to where it all started…in Dominican Republic, when Women in Coffee realized its first dream by donating a coffee roaster to a community of female farmers. Today, that dream is fueled by the work of those women who, thanks to Women in Coffee, have started a small business called TIOLA and have begun selling roasted coffee. Due to the increased demand, the small roaster we donated is no longer able to meet the growing volumes. Thanks to the fundraising campaign launched in 2023, we will donate a second roaster to the community, which will help further women find their path in a new, larger space.
