Editor’s Note

October sees yet another Budget in which the Government reminds us that we have never had it so good while dripping deeper into our pockets. And, of course, you can’t compare Irish taxation with anywhere else because, as is pointed out in Dáil Éireann on a regular bases, Ireland is different!

It’s a difference that becomes harder to explain as our towns and buildings become ever more identical with anywhere else in Europe. When national identity is reduced to marketing concepts of the “Ancient East” and the nonsensical “Wild Atlantic Way.” And when our taxation regime is actually basically the same as many other countries.

In reality, people are people the world over and political incompetence is a feature of most democracies.

But, when it comes to elections we get to chose who runs the country, not what they will do when they get into power. We don’t get a vote on taxation and even though the Water Charges fiasco has proved there are limits it is a fact that new areas of taxation are constantly being explored.

As the nights draw in and the weather gets worse in the lead into Winter at least we can draw comfort from the fact that taxation will continue to provide an endless topic of conversation.

On the bright side we have the October Bank Holiday weekend to look forward to at the end of the month. Enjoy it because it’s the last one before Christmas!

Celebrate National Potato Day with Spuds and Family Fun! Country Crest and Keoghs are hosting ‘Spud Fest’, a free family fun day at Newbridge House.

The free, family fun day is being hosted by local farming businesses, Country Crest and Keoghs Farm, in celebration of Ireland’s greatest staple food – the potato!

Some of the exciting activities on the day will include potato sack racing, tug-o-war, face painting, bouncy castles, arts & crafts, traditional lawn games, vintage tractors, music and more.

Guests will especially enjoy the farm-fresh food fare being provided by the event sponsors, with lots of delicious spud-based meals and crisps being served.

A big thank you to Fingal County Council for helping to fund this event.

The National Potato Day celebrations will take place at:Newbridge House & Farm, Donabate. Saturday 7 October. 12pm – 4pm.

Keith Duffy Foundation classic at Roganstown We were proud to host the Keith Duffy foundation day last Friday at Roganstown in aid of Clionas Foundation and Fighting Blindness.

It was a very successful day with people from the world of Music, Sport, TV and entertainment as well as local corporate companies.

All tee boxes were kindly sponsored

by Brendan O Carroll and Mrs Browns boys and Rural WIFI. The day consisted of a shotgun start champagne scramble with a celebrity on each team. They had 27 teams which was a great achievement, and they were all treated to fantastic Goody bags, Gunpowder Gin Bar on the course, as well as Dawson 32 bar and Red Bull Ice Buckets full of water , peroni, and red bull products.

All golfers were also treated to a gourmet Burger on the course, so they had plenty to eat & drink whilst enjoying the beauty of the course.

The comments on the day and the feedback from Keith’s guests was very positive, that we are going to run it again next year.

After golf everyone retreated with their partners and wives to Mc Loughlin’s restaurant for a superb

buffet, and then to the transformed O Callaghan’s bar where they were entertained to absolutely amazing Comedy from Al Foran & Barry Murphy as well as Robbie Dolan, Boyzlife, Brian Ormond , just to name a few.

An auction and raffle took place and a huge amount of money was raised on the night.

Council issues plea to motorists after incidents with school traffic wardens Fingal County Council has issued a plea to motorists to slow down in the vicinity of schools after two incidents involving school traffic wardens in the first week since schools reopened after the summer break.

In one incident a school traffic warden was verbally abused by an irate motorist when asked the move their car which had been parked illegally in the vicinity of a school crossing. The car’s wing mirror then struck the warden as it was being driven off. The Gardai were informed of the incident.

In the second incident a car drove through a school crossing in Swords, seconds after a group of children had crossed the road, and narrowly missed hitting the school traffic warden who was in the process of returning to the pavement. This incident has also been reported to the Gardai.

Niamh Russell, Road Safety Promotions Officer with Fingal County Council, said: “We are appealing to motorists to slow down in the vicinity of schools and to obey the instructions of our school traffic wardens. The wardens are fulfilling an important role in ensuring that children can cross the roads safely. The two incidents are extremely worrying and we urge motorists to start obeying the rules of the road, otherwise we could end up dealing with even more serious incidents.”

Councillor Darragh Butler noted that he gets lot of calls about schools and parking this time of year. “Please can everyone be considerate to other road users, do not block paths and driveways and if possible, walk to the school. Above all, please respect our school traffic wardens, follow school instructions and stay safe. If your journey to work goes past a school, please allow extra time and go another way around if possible. We need to keep our children safe.”

Wooly Farm Halloween Event It’s that time of year again, Ghosts, Dolls, and ghouls alike, have descended onto Wooly Farm for Halloween. Come meet Polly and Molly the dollies in our barn theatre, carve your own spooky pumpkin, learn a rhythm on the Fuinneamh Drum, and stuff yourself with a chocolate apple.

Now running in its sixth year, Wooly Farm is the place to be this Halloween with lots of activities to do from 2-5pm on Saturday 21st, Sunday 22 nd , Saturday 28 th , Sunday 29 th , Monday the 30 th , and Tuesday the 31 st of October. Don’t miss their Halloween Spectacular!

TRICK OR TREAT ‘Fangtastic’ recipes for Halloween

It’s that time of year again. But we don’t have to wait until October 31 to sink our teeth into some ‘Fangtastic’ foods.

Try out these WICKED ideas to ‘creep’ the fun into every bloody meal!

Bloody Beetroot Buns Ingredients: • • • •

160g cooked beetroot er 20 dates, soaked in a little wat r flou 100g oats, blitzed into a fine 100g almond flour

Goooey Green Icing: • •

1 Avocado 30g Vanilla protein powder

Method:

1. Pre-heat oven to 180’c.

2. Blitz up beetroot and dates in a blender. Scrape into a mixing bowl.

• 3. Add the blitzed up oats and almond flour and mix until blended together.

• 5. For the icing: Scoop out and mash the avocado in a bowl, discarding the seed in the middle.

• Mix the protein powder in until well blended. Allow buns to cool first before icing.
