Editor’s Note It May be a sunny month!

The beginning of May is associated with the Celtic festival of Bealtaine. This marked the start of the season of blossoming flowers and fruit trees. It’s good news for the majority of people but for those with a pollen allergy May sees grass pollen counts rise (all the way through to August!). The first Monday of May became a public holiday following the Public Holiday Regulations 1993 Act. The holiday was first observed in 1994. Introduced by Ruairi Quinn, it is thought by many as a day to celebrate Ireland workers but that is not the case officially. Japanese workers, however, have it made - there are four holidays between April 29 and May 5. They call it ‘The Golden Week.’ May marks the start of Summer and the restart of the weather debate with older people recalling the blistering heat of 1959, 1968, 1975 and 1976! Records show that, since 1880, May is the best month for sunshine. While it is impossible to predict accurately what this May is going to be like, the people at Accuweather.com took a stab at it - they reckon we’ll have just one sunny day, 25 cloudy days and 4 days of rain.

Swords Castle gets creative!

Fingal County Council hosted a day of free family fun and creativity at the Cruinniú na Cásca event in Swords Castle recently. The event which included an Easter Market, live music and kids activities was attended by over 4,200 people. The recently refurbished surroundings of the historic Swords Castle created the perfect backdrop for activities which included a market for from local artists, craft-makers and artisan producers, live music and entertainment, children’s

arts and crafts and lots more. There was also a living history demonstration by the Irish Great War Society at the event and Swords Heritage Trail Bus Tours offered locals the opportunity to learn more about the history of Swords and its heritage sites, including Swords Castle, St. Columba’s Round & Square Towers, St. Colmcille’s Well, Peter Wilson’s Bridge and the Carnegie Library. Swords Schools Shortfall Queried

Farrell questions Minister on enrolment issues in Swords schools Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell, recently raised the enrolment issues at primary level schools in Swords directly with the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton in Dáil Éireann. Raising this matter in the Dáil, Deputy Farrell stated: “I understand that in January the Department provided the local authority with a comprehensive report on the availability of space for the coming year. Regrettably, it has been found that once enrolment was complete in those schools, there were excessive applications in the hundreds throughout the community of Swords.

“The reality of the situation is that it does not appear the Department has adequately catered for educational demand in Swords. As a resident of the town for 13 years I was rather disappointed to learn this, especially having received assurances in writing from the Department in January this year.” continued Deputy Farrell. Following his contribution in the Dáil, Deputy Farrell said “Having had many parents in Swords contact me with concerns regarding securing a school place for their child this September. It is without doubt that serious issues exist regarding the capacity of our local primary schools to accommodate every child in need of a school place in their local community. “The fact remains, that every child must be provided with a school place for this September, and we must avoid a scenario whereby two children in the same family would be in two different schools. It would simply not be in anyway feasible, given traffic issues alone, to expect a parent to travel between two schools in Swords and make the starting times of both. “As part of the Fingal Development Plan, there is headroom for the development of up to 10,000 housing units by 2025 in the Swords area, particularly with the development of Metro North over the coming years this highlights how increasing school capacity must be a priority to cater for the continued population growth in Swords. “I do not believe the Department of Education can accurately determine the amount of school places which will be needed in Swords over the coming years given the amount of development which will take place in our local community. “The provision of new classrooms and educational infrastructure in Swords must be prioritised in order to ensure this issue does not reoccur in the coming years. “I will continue to engage with the Minister and his Department on this matter in search of a solution for all families, and a school place this September for children affected.”

Fingal Mayor Darragh Butler said: “As somebody who lives in Swords and has represented the people of that town on Fingal County Council for the past ten years, I am very aware of the contribution that Peter Wilson and his 12 colleagues from the Fifth Fingal Battalion made when they arrived to reinforce the group of volunteers, led by Sean Heuston, who had captured the building on Easter Monday. “From the moment I heard the story of the volunteers at the Mendicity and how they held out for two days in one of the hardest fought and most persistent sieges of the Rising I had two distinct feelings. One was admiration for the bravery of the 28 volunteers and their leader and the second was dismay that their story is one of the least heralded of the Easter Rising. “The contribution of the Fifth Fingal Battalion to the Easter Rising was significant. They achieved the most notable victory of the week at the Battle of Ashbourne and were also able to send reinforcements into Dublin. One of those was Peter Wilson, who arrived at the Mendicity in the early hours of Tuesday morning with 12 fellow Fingal men and a captured British solider. “Their arrival allowed the volunteers hold out for another day before they were forced to surrender due to weariness, lack of food and a shortage of ammunition. Their only casualty was Peter Wilson, who died after the surrender, when he was shot dead by a sniper. I want to pay tribute to Peter Wilson, Sean Heuston and the rest of the Mendicity volunteers because their actions led to us being able to live in the country they dreamed of, a sovereign Irish State. I also want to thank Robin Bollard (from Rush and who grew the Easter Lilies especially) and the Mendicity Garrison Relatives for the invitation to join you in today’s commemoration and I want, on behalf of the people of Fingal, to commend you on your efforts to ensure that the story of what happened on Ushers Island, 101 years ago, is never forgotten.”

Free Services for Self-employed

Alan Farrell

Self-employed people in the North County can now benefit from free dental and optical exams through the Treatment Benefit Scheme for the first time. That’s according to Fine Gael Dublin Fingal TD, Alan Farrell who has welcomed the move by Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar to extend these PRSI benefits to 450,000 self-employed people and their spouses across the State. “The Treatment Benefit Scheme covering free dental and optical exams has been restored to employees, and crucially is now also being extended to self-employed people for the first time ever. “This means that small business owners farmers, tradesmen, freelancers, contractors and professionals in North County can now benefit from this Scheme for the first time. “People who work for themselves and pay PRSI at class S can now get the same regular dental and optical examinations, free of charge, that until now were only available to employees. They can also get a grant for hearing aids of 50% of the cost, to a maximum of €500 per aid, every four years. “Many small business owners in Fingal have spoken to me in the past about the fact that they were not entitled to State

supports, compared with PAYE employees. We all know that successful small businesses are more likely to create jobs, thereby increasing the opportunities for job seekers in our local towns and villages. Supporting the self-employed is good news for the whole community. “I was also pleased to hear Minister Varadkar confirm that more benefits are to come and we will look to further strengthen supports for the self-employed. “This will include the restoration of scale and polish treatment under the dental scheme, and the option of free spectacles or a contribution towards a more expensive pair under the optical scheme. The past division between employees and selfemployed people will be eradicated as from now on, the restoration of benefits such as these will be available to both groups here in the North County. “Minister Varadkar will also make the invalidity pension available to self-employed contributors who cannot work due to long term illness or disability. This will be a really welcome move for self-employed people here in Fingal who, for the first time ever will have that security if they are unable to work.

Local Swords Questions Addressed point beyond this Y junction. It may be necessary to supplement these markings with a barrier preventing pedestrians from approaching the junction on the opposite side of the church and this will be installed if considered appropriate. It is intended to carry out these works over the coming months.”

Responding to questions put forward by cllr. Darragh Butler, Fingal County Council provided details on a number of ongoing issues. •

The Council expects that remedial works at Carlton Court, Swords, should be completed before the Council’s meeting in September. Once the estate is taken in charge a scheme of Traffic and Parking Management may be put together for public consideration.

Complaints over the lack of adequate parking spaces within Boru Court, Swords, are unlikely to be resolved. The County Council noted that “ Boro Court has not yet been taken in charge. The car parking at this location was provided in accordance with the planning permission granted for the development. Experience would indicate that when Developers are developing an estate all available space is utilised to its fullest potential having regard to the requirements of their permission.

A request for an update on any proposed solutions to improve the corner and junction of Church Road with the Brackenstown Road, Swords; improving the existing steep corner and making this stretch of road safer, drew the following response: It is proposed to encourage pedestrians to cross to the church side of the road before reaching the Y junction. This will be achieved by a series of footpath markings to direct them to a safer crossing

A request to re-line the road markings at the entrance to Ridgewood is to be addressed during the Summer, subject to financial resources.

Cllr. Butler asked whether an enclosed dog park could be provided at River Valley park, similar to St. Anne’s park in Clontarf. In response the Council noted that enclosed dog parks can lead to aggressive incidents if they are not used correctly. It is not well understood by dog owners that a dog park or run should only be used as a supplement to a normal exercise regime and not as the dog’s sole form of exercise and socialisation. A fully consultative process to develop a longer term strategic plan for the Ward River Valley is due to commence later this year which will allow park users, residents and dog owners to have their opinions taken in to consideration.

The Council expects that Ward River Valley Park will be completed shortly after a ‘small number of outstanding areas” are transferred.

Swords thundering to success

After an incredible season in which they won the National Cup, were runners up in the Superleague, and Champions Trophy success, Griffith Swords Thunder Basketball Team took part in the Varsities championships in Dublin where they took on all the top universities and colleges in the country at the top level of Irish college basketball. Griffith ran away with the tournament making history being the only non university since 1950 to collect the trophy and finishing the season undefeated. The final against Universities of Ulster was streamed live with Griffith winning 76-45. Top scorer was Jose Gil Narbon,18, and Comroy Baltimore, 16. Justin Goldsborough & Alex Calvo collected college All Star awards for a great season and Alex also collected MVP for the tournament. Coach Baker now spearheading the recruitment for both Thunder and Griffith for next year but also preparing Ireland U20 menâ€™s team to take part in the European Championships in Romania. Mayor opens Book of Condolence for R116 Crew

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, signs the Book of Condolence for the crew members of R116.

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, is pictured signing the Book of Condolences at County Hall, Swords, for the four crew members of the Fingal-based Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter R116 which crashed into the sea off Blackrock Island, Co Mayo, on March 14. A minute’s silence was observed at the start of Council’s April meeting in memory of the four crew members. Winchman Ciarán Smith, a native of Swords and a resident of Oldtown, was one of those on board along with his colleagues Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, Captain Mark Duffy and Winch Operator Paul Ormsby.

Swords Manor FCâ€™s under-8 football team has got their new season off to a flying start with the support of new sponsors, Hall Public Relations. Trained by Swords residents - head coach Liam Fulham and assistant coaches Julian Oâ€™Brien and Ashley Hall - the Swords Manor team competes in the North Dublin Schoolboys/Girls League, ranked as the second biggest league of its kind in Ireland for players in the 7-18 years age groupings. Each

weekend, more than 13,000 young children from Fingal turn out to play in its various competitions. In addition to their sponsorship, other support that Hall PR hopes to give will include work in promoting sport and outdoor activity in the local community.

Welcoming our winners home

The Mayor of Fingal, cllr. Darragh Butler, was among the dignitaries who welcomed local athletes back home after their successful trip to the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. The Irish team brought back a whopping eight medals, two gold, three silver, and, three bronze.

‘Bear-illiant’ teddy bear treats

Method Ingredients • • •

40g Rice Krispies cereal 120g Nut butter (eg. peanut, almond, cashew etc) 2 tablespoons linseed (flaxseed) or sesame seeds (or both!) 2 tablespoons natural liquid sweetener eg. Agave/maple/ date syrup or honey

“With the days getting longer and brighter, there are plenty of reasons to get outside and be active while also getting your Vitamin D from the sunshine! A Teddy Bear’s picnic in the back garden, going on a bear hunt or even a treasure trail in a park are all ‘treasure-ific’ ways to get fresh air and be active and healthy!! To decorate:

1.Place rice Krispies and seeds into a bowl. Add the nut butter and natural sweetener and mix well altogether. 2. Divide the mixture into 8, roll with your hands into a ball and squish down a little to make a flat pattie! 3. Cut dark chocolate diagonally at the corners to make triangle shapes for the ears and nose. Cut the prunes in half. Make the mouth shape with one half and cut the other half in half again and roll into small beady eyes!! 4. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes & enjoy as they “Snap, Crackle and Pop” !!!

Mayor of Fingal counts down Noticeboard & Parish News CRIME COMING DOWN : Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, and member of the Oireachtas Justice and Equality Committee, Alan Farrell, says that continued action on crime in local communities across the North County is of the utmost importance. “When we look at crime figures, in comparison to Garda numbers in local stations, we must recognise the gains being made in tackling crime by the hard-working men and women of An Garda Síochána in Dublin Fingal,” he says. “In Malahide, Garda numbers increased by two from 2015 to 2016, and we have seen reductions in 14 of 19 crime categories.
