In the blink of an eye Summer 2016 has officially ended. We might get an Indian Summer yet, but don’t hold your breath. We hope you had a good one and managed to get a bit of time away from your usual routine whether it was a holiday in sunnier climes or a staycation. As we enter autumn, the nights are getting darker unfortunately but we still have two months to go before the clock goes back. And speaking of going back, well the kids are all back to school this month and parents throughout our communities will be breathing a huge sigh of relief. Volunteers dig for history in Swords

In rain, wind and some sunshine local volunteers descended on Swords Castle over the last few weeks to dig for a bit of history. Since August 19 up to 30 volunteers a day, locals and some from a lot further afield, including as far away as Canada, Germany and Italy, worked with community archaeologist Christine Baker, as part of the second year of community excavation at the castle. Volunteers patiently and methodically removed soil from three trenches and then carefully examined the soil for artefacts. There was a lot of sieving, washing, and sorting of the many finds already made. This included many pieces of medieval pottery and lots of animal bone, all revealing more about the lives of people in Swords over the centuries. Throughout the work the trenches revealed what was happening within the castle walls. They told us about buildings and other structures within the walls which have long since disappeared above ground. And they revealed more about the people who lived here and how they lived. ‘Swords Castle: Digging History’ is Fingal County Council’s first Community Archaeology project. It’s providing people from communities across the county with a unique opportunity to take part in a real archaeological excavation working with a small team of professional archaeologists. The project, now in its second year, has been attracting local volunteers and many from a lot further afield. Many of those who took part last year returned and once again helped to unearth the complex history of this site. This year’s Great Dublin Bike Ride, which takes place on September 11, will pass through a number of areas in Fingal including Swords.

Fingal County Council, along with other local authorities are the event stakeholders and with Sport Ireland, Dublin City Council and Healthy Ireland, are bringing this

major event to north county Dublin. The bike ride, which will have over 5,000 cyclists participating, is for all abilities and ages and will have two routes.

The first route is 60km and will pass through Baldoyle, Portmarnock, Malahide, and Swords before returning to Dublin city. The second route is 100km again taking in parts of the 60km route with the additional areas of Ballyboughal, Naul and Garristown. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, said: “We’re delighted to have this event coming through Fingal because while promoting cycling it’s also a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase Fingal at its finest. “I’ll be taking part myself along with Team Fingal staff so come along on September 11 and give the cyclists a cheer.” Director of Housing and Community at Fingal County Council, Margaret Geraghty, said the council is very pleased to be supporting the event. “This will be a flagship event in Ireland for the European Week of Sport, September 10-18, and it’s an opportunity to show visitors what’s on offer here in Fingal,” said Ms Geraghty.

Dads urged to sign up for Paternity Benefit Prospective parents in Fingal are being urged to sign up for Paternity Benefit after the launch of a campaign recently by Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar. Paternity Benefit becomes available on September 1 and will be paid at a rate of €230 a week for two weeks, to both employees and the self-employed. Fingal Senator Dr James Reilly (pictured, left) said it’s really simple for prospective parents in Fingal to apply. “Fathers in Fingal who fulfil the PRSI requirements, are eligible for Paternity Benefit when they take two weeks of Paternity Leave at any time within the first 26 weeks of their child’s life, or following adoption,” he said. “The awareness campaign launched, informs prospective parents in Fingal that they require a Public Service Card in order to apply for Paternity Benefit. “And if they are an employee, they need to give four weeks’ notice to their employer to qualify for the accompanying Paternity Leave. “All the information on how to apply for Paternity Leave, and how to get your Public Service Card, is available at www.welfare.ie/paternitybenefit. Senator Reilly described it as a ground-breaking measure, which meets the commitment made in Budget 2016 and in Fine Gael’s Election Manifesto. “It is great news for fathers in Fingal and will afford them the opportunity to be more involved at the earliest stages of a child’s development,” he said. “Fine Gael is also committed to significantly increasing parental leave for parents in Fingal over the next five years and cutting the cost of childcare. “We want to give every child in Fingal the best start in life and improve the lives of everyone in Fingal.”

Swords Rugby Club back in full swing The Swords Autumn Tag League, in association with IRFU Volkswagen Tag, kicked off its third season of Tag Rugby on August 24 at the ALSAA Sports Grounds. Tag Rugby is for everyone over the age of 16. The club caters for all skill levels and experience from complete beginners to season players. If you missed out this time around Swords RFC will also be hosting a Spring League so make sure to follow on Facebook @ SwordsVwTagRugby for updates on this season and future leagues. Meanwhile, Swords RFC had a huge response to its recruitment drive this season but are always looking for new players. If you want to give rugby a try or just get back into the sport, you’re always welcome to join them every Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm–9pm. Paternity Leave now a Statutory entitlement From August 2, 2016 Paternity Leave became law and is now recognised as a new legal right in Ireland. 6

Paternity leave may be taken at any time from September 1 2016 and must be taken within 26 weeks of the birth/placement of the child. An employee considered to be a ‘relevant parent’ of a child will be entitled to two weeks’ consecutive leave from their employment to care for their child. A ‘relevant parent’ includes the child’s father, the spouse/civil partner/cohabitant of the child’s mother or sole male adopter as well as parents of

a donor-conceived child. Same sex couples jointly adopting a child must choose one parent to be the ‘relevant parent’. Only one period of leave will apply where there are multiple births or adoptions at the same time. Swords gym muscles in on fundraising event Dinny Collins Fitness, based in Swords, is holding its first annual charity event on Saturday, September 3 at Malahide Castle. Teams of three will walk a combined total of 1km while swinging a kettlebell, which is not as easy as it may sound. The event is being held to raise money for the gym’s chosen charity, Fingal Bereaved by Suicide. The event at Malahide Castle, which starts at 10.30am, will be followed by a coffee morning at the gym in Seatown Business Campus. Dinny told Swords Local: “We originally started life as Fingal Kettlebells and the kettlebell has remained a core piece of equipment in the workouts we do with our clients throughout our classes in our gym. “Due to this affinity with the kettlebell, it was an easy decision to include them in our charity fundraiser challenge, and to make the activity something that every member of our gym (and non-members alike) could easily participate in. “From this, the 1km walk and kettlebell swing challenge was born. “We decided on the charity - Fingal Bereaved by Suicide - as we wanted to give support to a local charity that would normally not receive funding to the extent that other charities would.” Dinny said the charity provides exceptional support to families and communities in Fingal who have been bereaved by suicide, which has unfortunately seen a dramatic rise over the past number of years. “We hope to see all of our members there, as well as anyone who has never come to our gym before but would like to take part in a fun event, raising much-needed funds for an amazing charity,” Dinny added. Members of Dinny Collins Fitness are no strangers to flexing their muscles outside of the gym. Earlier in the summer members took part in an event at Dollymount Strand. There was over 1,200 entrants at the Spin 103.8fm Sandstorm 5k obstacle course run and the representation from Dinny Collins Fitness, proved to be well up to the challenge on the day! What the banks don’t want you to know By Dave Kavanagh Most people use banks for a variety of services and products for convenience. In many cases, people assume that their bank is giving them the most suitable products for the best value but is that really the case? Quite often, a bank is limited in the range of options it has to offer but won’t necessarily tell you this because they want you to buy their products and make them more profit. Some of the most common areas where we see this being the case, include mortgage protection, life & serious illness cover, home insurance, personal loans and current accounts. When people apply for mortgages (usually the biggest financial obligation you will probably have in your life) the associated products required can seem secondary in comparison and quite often, the bank arranges to put these other products in place for you. In many cases the bank is tied to just one company’s offering, for example with mortgage protection, so they are not in a position to offer you alternative mortgage protection that could be much cheaper. You are under no obligation to take out any such products with the bank that provides your

mortgage. Even if you did so some years back, you can still compare today and if you can get mortgage protection that is sufficient to cover your remaining balance and term and it is cheaper than what you are paying, you are quite entitled to replace it. This is usually more noticeable with personal life or serious illness cover, as the premium will usually be higher, leading to a larger saving. The same is often the case with home insurance where we see people who have their home insurance premium deducted with their mortgage payment so just leave it as it is, when in fact, they can be paying close to double what they could be insuring their home by shopping around each year. With competition in banking meaning that options constantly change, it is well worth researching alternatives to make sure you are getting the best value. The charges on current accounts can be quite excessive when closely examined and it may be that your particular pattern of use with your current account would incur much lower charges elsewhere. The same can be said when applying for personal loans or car loans. Check the interest rate and the repayments. Are there any additional fees with the application? Is the interest rate

fixed or variable? Are there penalties for early repayment? Does your credit union have a better option? Yes, there is a little bit of extra work involved but the savings can make it very worthwhile. A €20 per month saving on a mortgage protection plan with 20 years remaining, is €4,800 in total. People will often take the time to compare products in a supermarket to see if one option is a few cents cheaper than another but yet not take the time to compare things that are deducted by direct debit despite the potential of much larger savings. It really is worth taking a little time to make sure you are getting the best value for your hardearned money. Swords company embarks on new programme

It’s back to school time

The next couple of weeks are very busy for parents as they get the children ready for back to school. If you have yet to get everything sorted, don’t worry, we’ve got some tips to help you keep your sanity and not go broke! Uniforms – If you have to get a crested uniform and are strapped for cash, an alternative is to buy a generic jumper/cardigan and have the school crest embroidered on. Bestwear in Drogheda can add crests for any school for €5, to inquire pop into them on Shop st. or call them on 0419836036. We got our son’s Balbriggan school uniform here and saved a fortune by doing it this way. Shoes – Tesco have a great range of scuff resistant shoes that are sturdy and will last well in winter and will withstand running, playing and climbing! We tried them last year and they were half the price of the ones we used to buy but they lasted just as well. Coats – There are loads of offers for winter coats at the moment. Tesco, M&S, Heatons and Mothercare all have great ones. Make sure to buy it a little big, so your child gets the whole year out of it. Schoolbags – Pulse and Dealz have schoolbags from €5-15. The ones in Pulse are colourful and ideal for girls and Dealz has character ones from €5. Make sure the bag is big enough to fit the lunchbox and books your child needs and also, make sure the straps are sturdy and not likely to break or open easily. Give it a good tug before you buy, to be sure! Headlice - is a big problem for all schools and usually, within a week or two of school starting back, there is an outbreak. Boots has a brilliant product called ‘Nitty Gritty’ that you spray on your child’s head each morning before school and it repels headlice. Since we started using it 2 years ago, we have had no outbreaks at all. One bottle will last most of the school year and this is definitely one item we would highly highly recommend! Lunchboxes – These can be expensive but if you shop around, you can

The rental market is currently experiencing a huge difference between the amount of properties available to rent and the number of applicants who are applying for properties.

It is common for an agent to receive 50 applications in the first 48 hours and over 100 in the first week. As you can imagine, this causes heartbreak for people who can be in desperate need of somewhere for their family to live. Obviously, the landlords’ priority is to find the best tenant for their property. So they are looking for every reason to whittle down all these applications to one fantastic person who will look after their house. See below a list of hints and tips to help applicants when they apply to rent a property to give you the best chance of being successful: •References, references, references!

are looking for any reason to rule someone out as they can’t rent the property to everyone, so don’t give them an excuse. Make sure your application includes your phone number, tell them a bit about who is applying, why you are moving? What references do you have? The landlord will always ask the agents opinion about people so always try to be the easiest, friendliest and most reliable person to deal with. Whatever you do, the best advice is to keep going. Food programme has taste of success for jobs FORTY-FOUR new jobs have already been created in small food producers in Fingal as a consequence of the Food Academy programme. That’s according to the Fingal Local Enterprise Office (LEO). And this number looks set to double before the end of 2017, to over 90 foodproduction jobs in Fingal. The Food Academy Programme, which is run by the Local Enterprise Offices, Bord Bia and SuperValu, is hailed as a great success for local job creation. A survey by the Fingal LEO shows that 12 small food and drink producers in Fingal, members of the Food Academy Programme who employ 44 people, have made the breakthrough into the retail market. Those same businesses expect to create a further 32 jobs over the next 12 months. But further intakes onto the Food Academy programme, mean that the jobs created will more than double to over 90 food production jobs before the end of next year. At an event organised by the Local Enterprise Offices Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, met with food producers from eight different regions, including HiRó by Róisin from the Dublin region. All eight companies are among the 281 producers to have successfully made the breakthrough into the retail market. Run over a series of workshops, the Food Academy programme is an initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices, Bord Bia and SuperValu to nurture new start-ups in the food and drink sector and it focuses on areas such as business planning, understanding consumer trends and raising finance. Minister Mitchell O’Connor encouraged more ‘early-stage’ food and drink producers to apply for the programme through Fingal LEO. “This programme has already enabled almost 300 small food businesses to WE NEED YOU start and grow, creating valuable jobs across every county and region,” she said.

“One of my priorities as Minister is creating an environment where job growth can thrive, particularly in rural Ireland. “I want to thank Bord Bia and SuperValu for their support and I want to thank the LEOs for their endeavours in developing this opportunity.” Start-ups and small businesses in the food and drink sector are supported by Local Enterprise Offices through measures such as financial assistance, mentoring and online trading supports. Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Fingal Local Enterprise Office, is also the Chair of the LEO National Food Committee that runs the Food Academy. Speaking at the announcement of the jobs growth in the food sector, he said: “By equipping owners and managers of local food businesses with industry knowledge and skills, they have a better chance of succeeding in business. “The goal of the Food Academy programme is to help more food producers to start selling through supermarkets, as well as through farmers’ markets and to provide them with the supports, information and advice to scale up and achieve this retail break-through. “According to our research, Food Academy producers in Fingal already support 44 full-time jobs.” Mr Geoghegan added: “Over the next 18 months, these producers and a new intake will at least double this figure to more than 90 jobs.” Details about the next programme are available through www. localenterprise.ie Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid complimented all involved in the Food Academy initiative. It will consist of a 1km Kettlebell Walk and Swing Challenge in Malahide Castle. Join a team of three to complete 1km of Kettlebell Swings. It will be followed by a coffee morning back at the gym. 4 tablespoons Oats 4 tablespoons Milk (Dairy/Coconut/Almond/ Hazelnut Milk etc!) 4 tablespoons Natural Yogurt (Could use Strained/Greek style yogurt for more protein!) -1 tablespoon milled Chia Seeds (For Omega 3, Fibre, Protein!)

1.Layer the Basic Ingredients in a container with Oats and Chia Seeds first, followed by milk, then yogurt. 2.Continue with these layers and mix in your favourite ingredients to make it “OOOAT” SO GOOD!!! If you DO NOT want the Fruit/Other Crunchy Toppings to go soggy, then DON’T soak them overnight and just have them ready to add in right before YOU DIVE IN!! Here is just some nutritional info about a versatile, inexpensive and staple food like oats: Oats are a basic kitchen staple BUT NOWHERE near basic when it comes to their Nutritional Value and the “Oatalicious” things you can make with them! Oats contain OODLES of a special fibre called Beta-Glucan. They also contain low GI wholegrain Carbohydrates for healthy hearts, digestion, weight management and energy levels. Some research suggests that 3g or more of Beta-Glucan per day can lower LDL and total cholesterol and this can be achieved by having 2-4 portions of oat based products e.g. breakfast cereals, breads and crackers every day. In clinical trials a 5% total and LDL cholesterol lowering effect was seen within 4 weeks in those who consumed more oat based foods.
