The Ireland team did us proud at the European Championships in France but now we’re deep into the GAA season and the big crowds are flocking to Croke Park to see who will lift the Sam Maguire Cup. And speaking of big numbers, we learned something recently that we suspected for a long time. According to the Census figures, Fingal is officially the fastest growing county in Ireland with a population of more than 296,000. In the latest issue of Swords Local we will have reaction to that story, as well as keeping you up to date with what else is going on in your area, including articles and photos on local community events and success stories. Swords company among job creation grant recipients

Sixty-four new jobs and over €262,500 in financial supports have been announced for 16 Fingal start-ups and growing small businesses in the latest announcement of job-creation grants by the Fingal Local Enterprise Office (LEO). The companies - located in Swords, Balbriggan, Lusk, Skerries, Howth Junction, Portmarnock, The Ward, Castleknock, Blanchardstown, The Naul, and Malahide - were approved for Business Priming and Business Expansion Grants. Included in this crop of exciting businesses are six food and drink startups, including Fingal’s first substantial Craft Beer brewery, a ready to cook vegetable meal producer and a ready to go healthy breakfast producer. In addition, the Local Enterprise Office approved funding for new jobs in international corporate tourism, an export-oriented craft producer, a cloud based business intelligence company specialising in hospital services, an engineering company producing solutions for food production, a ceramics manufacturer, a precision engineering company, a chemical product provider, and an Android tablet developer creating products for the over 65s. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler and Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid presented grant approval letters to each of the 16 businesses at a specially convened awards event in County Hall, Swords. Mayor Butler, who served for several years on the Fingal County Enterprise Board, is very familiar with the importance of supporting startups. “Local business is the lifeblood of our economy and the local authority has a crucial role to ensure that small businesses and start-ups are given every opportunity to succeed,” he said. “I am delighted that our Local Enterprise Office in Fingal is proactively and successfully encouraging and incentivising entrepreneurship.” 4

Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise with Fingal County Council, confirmed that the small businesses approved for funding are creating at least 22 new jobs immediately, a figure that will increase to 64 new jobs within the next 12 months. This LEO investment is worth €262,500, bringing the total approved this year to €490,000. Mr Geoghegan said: “Financial supports provided by the Fingal Local Enterprise Office can be crucial in helping start-ups to flourish in their first year of operation. “This month we have a range of exciting new small businesses that have great potential to create further jobs in Fingal in the coming years.” Chief executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said: “In the first two quarters of 2016 we have seen increasingly strong demand for services provided by our Local Enterprise Office. “On the back of continued improvement in our economy, the Local Enterprise Office has reported an acceleration in actual job creation and investment among small businesses in Fingal. “In the first six months of 2016 we have provided one-to-one business support services to more than 500 businesses and would-be entrepreneurs, not to mention the many hundreds of others that have availed of all of the wide variety of business support programmes, financial assistance and management development training programmes that the Fingal Local Enterprise Office has organised. “All of this is having a profoundly positive impact on our local economy and continued growth.” Further information about the enterprise supports available to small businesses and new start-ups is available through http://www.localenterprise. ie/Fingal Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Two defibrillators to be based in Swords

with the right people at the council in order to facilitate this. When the defibrillator is located outside County Hall, it will be in a coded box but all local shops in Swords will be getting the code. “I’m also working on getting the code on the national ambulance service 999 system,” said Darragh. The second defibrillator was donated by the Old Schoolhouse Bar and Restaurant and Mid-Knight Electrical. This one will be located at Swords Garda Station and will have 24/7 access. “Dx2 Training Solutions (Dan Davern) donated free training to the gardai and to a few local businesses in Swords to be trained on the AED,” said Darragh. “Dan was a great help to me on this. Also, Garda Tom Murphy was a great help to me in getting the defibrillator based in Swords Garda Station.”

After helping to save his uncle’s life, local man Darragh Lawlor (pictured right) got two defibrillators donated to Swords. “I realised there where no public AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) on the street,” he said. Swords Pavilions donated the first defibrillator which is temporarily located in the Old Schoolhouse Bar and Restaurant. It will be going in a cabinet outside Fingal County Council’s office on the main street in Swords. Darragh would like to thank Cllr Philip Lynam for putting him in touch

Local artists drawn to schools’ competition

THERE is a lot of talented young artists in Fingal judging by the quality of entries submitted to a competition held as part of the Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme. The Fingal 2016 Centenary art competition asked primary school children across the county to think about transport in 1916 Ireland and to draw pictures of how they imagined transport would look like 100 years from now. A total of 1,309 applications were received from 40 schools across the county. The chosen theme of travel for this competition stems from the fact that in 1916 many of the messages delivered to the volunteers would have been by bicycle. Bicycles were also a symbol of freedom, especially for women as it allowed them to travel greater distances away from their homeplace and move towards the greater independence that would unfold in the coming years. In Fingal, female messengers such as Mary (Molly) Adrien delivered dispatches from Padraig Pearse in the GPO to Thomas Ashe in the Swords area. Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid said: “What strikes me is the wealth of artistic talent among our young people in Fingal. “I would like to thank everyone who participated. I would also like to thank the teachers and parents who supported the children in getting the applications to us. Without this support none of this would have been possible.” Mr Reid added: “The job we had to pick the winners was a difficult one but nonetheless we are here to celebrate the winning entries.” Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eithne Loftus, who announced the winners, thanked the prize sponsors - Halfords Bicycles, Swords, the Irish Cycling Centre and Draíocht - who very kindly provided the prizes for the competition. She also thanked all of the students for submitting their entries. “Getting young children involved in the Fingal 1916 Centenary Commemorations has been really high on our priority list,” she said. “We wanted them to understand the contribution that men and women of 6

Fingal made at the Battle of Ashbourne, the Mendicity Institute, the GPO and other locations around Dublin during the events of the 1916 Rising. “This art competition has, I think helped them to understand what it was like for people in Ireland 100 years ago particularly with regard to transport.” The overall prize winners were as follows: •1st Prize, Annie Kinsella, 4th Class Pope John Paul’s NS Malahide; •2nd Prize Hezamary Paul, 4th Class Holy Family NS Rivervalley; •3rd Prize Filip Buliga, 1st Class St Ciarán’s NS, Hartstown. There were a number of highly commended and merit prizes awarded because the standard of artwork was so high in the competition. The winning entries will be on display in Fingal Libraries starting in Blanchardstown but they will tour the county so look out for them in your local library.

Volunteers needed for Swords Castle project

Locals are being urged to dig deep if they’d like to try their hand at a bit of archaeology. Season two of the Swords Castle Digging History-Community Archaeology Project will take place from August 19 to September 5 and volunteers are needed. The project, funded by Fingal County Council and the Heritage Council, allows members of the public to take part in a real archaeological dig, and to help answer unanswered questions about the national monument. Christine Baker, Fingal Community Archaeologist, said Swords Castle is one of the best surviving examples of an archbishop’s residence in the country, and was an important administrative centre. “We’re looking for volunteers (18 years and over) to join us for this excavation,” said Ms Baker. “No experience is necessary, and we have a number of roles for those who aren’t up to digging. “This season, we hope to find out if there is a graveyard underneath the castle, if there were buildings within the castle yard, and just how old the different buildings in the complex are.” Ms Baker added: “Volunteers will have a front row seat as we focus on the history and geology of the stones, and investigate the works carried out in the 1970s.” Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid commended the work done last year and the upcoming excavation. “The Community Archaeology Project is a fantastic example of how a collaboration between Fingal County Council, our citizens, and visitors to our county has produced a real and meaningful insight into the rich history of our national monument,” he said. “Swords Castle is a wonderful landmark, and the works, when completed, will highlight its spot as a jewel in our heritage offering.” To book your place on the project, email christine.baker@fingal.ie To follow the progress, like the Swords Castle Digging History Facebook page, and follow at @fingalheritage on Twitter. Fingal is Ireland’s fastest growing county

If you live Fingal, you’re not alone. In fact, there are nearly 300,000 of us residing in this beautiful county of ours. The preliminary results from the 2016 Census, show that Fingal has a population of 296,214, an increase of 22,223 since 2011. Fingal is Ireland’s fastest growing county with a 94 per cent growth in the population in 25 years. The county has seen its population grow by 8.1 per cent in the last five years. It has almost doubled in the past 25 years, rising from 152,766 in 1991 to 296,214 in 2016. The population is made up of 145,209 males and 151,005 females. Fingal is the second largest of the four Dublin Local Authorities and Fingal County Council has the third biggest local authority catchment area in the country. Fingal also contains four of the fastest growing electoral divisions in the State (BlanchardstownBlakestown, The Ward, Balbriggan Rural and Blanchardstown-Abbotstown) with growth rates of up to 27.4 per cent. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) report also shows that Fingal has the second lowest vacancy rate in the State, with a 19 per cent reduction in the number of vacant dwellings since 2011. Reid said the figures present both a challenge and an opportunity to Fingal. “Fingal County Council has been planning on the basis of similar population projections and we are currently in the middle of the review of our County Development Plan 2017-2023 which will provide a framework for the development of the county and its population in the medium-term. “However, what the census figures do indicate is the need for sustained investment in our public services, such as transport, schools and other infrastructure to support a significant and rapid increase in our population.” Mr Reid said Fingal County Council is actively supporting economic development in the county. “There are three elements to our approach,” he said. “We support the county’s SMEs through our Local Enterprise Office. We’re working to support our indigenous companies, such as in the agri-food sector and we work with others to attract multi-national industries to the county. “With its young, well-educated and expanding population, Fingal has the potential to increase its share of such investment and to be further seen as an attractive location for business to invest.”

Mr Reid added: “We very much see the figures as a positive for the long-term economic wellbeing of the county.” Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler said the increased population figures demonstrate the attractiveness of Fingal on many different levels and as a council. “We will be doing everything we can to ensure that it continues to be the best place to live, to raise a family, to work in, to do business in and to visit,” he said. “We will also be working to ensure the delivery of major infrastructure projects such as Metro North in order to cater for the needs of our growing population.” Fingal County Council will be further analysing the preliminary data from the CSO and its potential implications for future Council policies. It will also be working with all public service providers to ensure that the county’s infrastructure and provision of essential services meets the needs of such a population. Fingal has one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the State. There is a great mix of rural and urban communities, with 53 per cent of the county zoned for agricultural use. If you want something you’ve never had then you will have to do stuff you’ve never done and it’s scary but this is where the magic happens. Try things you think you are not able for, book into my running class although you’ve never ran before, join my gym although your shy or don’t think you will be able for it, go jump out of an airplane (with a parachute) if that’s what it takes to get your mindset to change. We need pressure or stress to grow and change. Just like a muscle needs resistance/stress to change and tone. Don’t fear the challenge embrace it as that’s how we start change, that’s how we move towards what we want. If we just think about it we continually come up with ‘stories’ or problems which prevent the change we really want. ‘Strive for progress not perfection’ is written on the wall of my gym and it’s what I live by. It’s all we need for happiness or success in any endeavour. If we seek perfection we 12

may never actually start. Always thinking the time is not quite right to start an exercise program - it never will be. The excuses will always be there but if you want to change then take the challenge on and start. Yes it might be scary and you will have your own doubts trying to sabotage your success but with some help and the attitude of seeking progress not perfection just imagine what’s possible. Most times I find the hardest part is to actually start. Then you realise it’s not actually too bad. In fact, if it’s an exercise program, it’s actually really enjoyable once you switch from the vicious cycle of - No energy, feeling down, eating junk, poor sleep, no motivation to start. To the opposite cycle of - Starting to exercise, so you now feel great, so you eat better, with good foods you have lots of energy, making it easier to exercise regularly and enjoy active hobbies. This helps you sleep better. With all this good stuff going

on you are now looking better and feeling happier, you have lots of motivation and enjoy the feeling of fitness so you continue - what’s not to love in there? Start now and worry about any problems When and If they arise. Remember without the stimulus of ‘getting out of our comfort zone’ we can not change. Watch your sugar Carbohydrates are sugar. It does not matter if it’s wholegrain pasta, brown bread or a tablespoon of white sugar. They all look the same when they are broken down in the body. Any rise in blood sugar means your body is going to produce a hormone called insulin. Insulin is a fat storing hormone so all those calories from sugar will have to be changed into body fat and put into storage – bad buzz! Raising insulin also blocks your body from accessing its own fat cells for fuel, again another bad buzz. Someone on a high carb diet will always be hungry although they eat

regularly. An elite athlete has 20,000 calories of body fat so us average Joes have much more. The problem for most people is their high carb diet leaves their insulin constantly elevated making it difficult to access these calories and as a double blow of badness their body creates new fat cells with the help of insulin. Lowering your carbohydrate intake and replacing it with natural fats and protein (meats, eggs, fish, olive & coconut oil, real butter etc) will lower your insulin and allow your body to burn its own bodyfat for fuel meaning sustained energy levels, less hunger/ cravings and easier fat loss meaning looser fitting clothes and maybe a shopping trip to the Pavilions. •Dinny is the owner of Dinny Collins Fitness located at 17 Seatown Business Campus, Swords. Co-habiting couples By Dave Kavanagh Recent events have again highlighted the importance of co-habiting couples – couples living together but not married – understanding how they are treated in certain circumstances. Whether we like to consider it or not, the untimely death of one partner in a co-habiting relationship, can have huge, adverse consequences on the surviving partner. Of course, despite alarming statistics, nobody ever expects it to happen to them. Example: Let’s take the situation where John and Mary bought a house together and have a joint mortgage. In the event of John’s death, the mortgage protection plan will usually clear the outstanding mortgage. With the house held in “joint tenancy” (as it usually would be with a mortgage) John’s half-ownership of the house passes to Mary. However, under Capital Acquisition Tax (CAT) rules, Mary is classed as a stranger and therefore, only has a tax-free threshold of €15,075. If the house is valued at the time of John’s death at €300,000, then Mary is deemed to have inherited €150,000. After her threshold of €15,075, she is liable

to pay tax at 33 per cent on the balance, leaving her with a tax bill of €44,525. If Mary satisfies three conditions, then she can be exempt from the tax. The conditions are: 1. She must have lived with John in the property for at least three years prior to his death. 2. She must continue to live in the property for a further six years. 3. She must have no other interest in any other residential property (including abroad). In many of these circumstances, the lack of planning ahead may result in having to sell the property to pay the tax bill and avoid interest or penalties. There are ways that this can be avoided by either increasing the mortgage protection policy to allow for the tax (although this may leave the surplus amount also liable for tax) or taking out “life of another” plans on each other. The reason for this is that when a life policy is paid out, whoever paid the premiums will dictate whether or not there is a liability. For example, if John and Mary have a joint life

policy for €250,000 and they pay the premiums from a joint bank account to which they both contribute, in the event of John’s death, Mary will receive €250,000 but deemed to have inherited half, leaving her with a tax bill of €36,275. Over 10,000 people die each year from cardiovascular disease in Ireland with approximately half of those deaths estimated to be caused by sudden cardiac arrest. The vast majority happen out of hospital and usually in close proximity to a friend or a family member. If you learn how to perform CPR, you may be able to save a life. St John’s Ambulance meet every Wednesday in Holywell Community Centre and are always looking for new members. If this is something you would like to do, call Paul on 087-6618786.

Bereavement Support Group trained members provide support to those grieving after the loss of a loved one. The group meet on the second and last Monday of every month from 7.30pm at the Parish Office, Parochial House, Seatown Road, Swords. Kellogg’s Cul camp takes place from August 15-19. Members can register their kids online through the Kellogg’s Cul Camp website or can hand completed application forms into the club bar/office. The venue is the Holywell pitch every Monday and Wednesday from 6.30pm-7.30pm. This is a great avenue for young kids to keep practising their hurling skills throughout the summer months so we can improve for next year. It will take place throughout July and August. Ingredients

Place crackers in a ziplock bag and crush to crumbs.

Shape approx 10-15 medium size burgers and cover on a plate in the fridge until ready to cook or shallow fry immediately at a high heat to seal on both sides for about 3-5min. Then continue to fry at a medium to low heat for a further 10min or until cooked through.

Sunflower Oil to fry. 10 cream crackers 1kg mince 1 tsp black pepper 1&1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp mustard powder 4 tbsp ketchup

Place all ingredients in a bowl and combine well.

Perfect on a bun or place in an oven dish with gravy and onions, cover with tinfoil and bake in the oven for 20min at 200 degrees and serve with mash and peas for a tasty alternative. Tip: place remaining uncooked burgers in a ziplock freezer bag divided by baking or parchment paper and freeze for another night’s dinner. Just defrost the night before needed in the fridge.
