Daniel set for Kilimanjaro charity challenge

Daniel Wilson will climb Kilimanjaro.

NEXT month, a man from Swords will take on the challenge of climbling Africa’s highest peak to raise funds for a local charity. On July 9 Daniel Wilson, manager of Applewood Community Centre, will be trekking to the summit of Kilimanjaro where he will proudly raise the Snowflakes Autism Support flag. “Over the past four years in my work as community centre manager I have seen all of the hard work put in by the committee, the members and family that is Snowflakes Autism Support,” Daniel told Swords Local. “I have fundraised through a skydive, shaved/dyed my hair and ran races up to half marathons for charities like the Irish Cancer Society, ISPCC, Pieta House and various other deserving charities. “However, I really wanted to work with a group that I can see where the money is going to, on the ground. “The hard work and dedication put into Snowflakes is such an inspiration to me and mainly because it is all for their family. “If I can help them raise awareness and hopefully funds that would enable them to eventually reach their goal of building a dedicated Autism Centre of Excellence in Swords, then this would be worthwhile.” Daniel said the idea for the trek up Kilimanjaro came from chatting to the guys from Snowflakes about some of the challenges that their children faced doing everyday activities. “This inspired me to think that if they have to overcome their own mountains everyday then I would overcome a mountain for them and place a Snowflakes flag at the summit,” he added. In 2012 Snowflakes Autism Support Group was set up by a group of parents of children with autism. Based at Holywell Community Centre, the group provides services for over 160 families and the number continues to grow each week. 4

Swords students excel at exhibition The Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education Training Board (DDLETB) has an established tradition of excellence in post primary education in Swords. Fingal Community College Art students along with their teacher Ms Lynch have had a very active year within the Creative Arts. The Art Department commenced the school year with their annual Art, Craft and Design exhibition curated by Transition Year students. This exhibition was a collaboration between the Art, Woodwork, Home Economics and Metalwork departments who exhibited projects from the Junior Certificate Examinations. The Transition Year class hosted students from local primary schools who engaged in workshops in the various subject areas during this event. As the year progressed work also began on two floats for the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Swords. Students decided to promote the various sporting achievements within the school on one float and commemorate the 1916 rising on another. A local landscape company, Virgoe McEnery, gave the art department the use of two of their trucks for the event. This project enabled students from all year groups to work collaboratively on a project. The art department also participated in the 1916 Commemoration Parade organised by the Fingal County Council. Portraits of the 1916 signatories painted by fifth year art students along with other artwork was on display at this event. Following on from the parade Fingal Community College were then approached by the Arts Education officer in Fingal County Council to participate in a 1916 commemoration project entitled ‘Waves’. Waves is a unique arts education initiative that connects young people and art. Irish artists, Ruth Lyons and Sean Lynch were invited to devise a series of artist-led workshops to students within Fingal Community College, in response to the rich context of the Easter Rising 1916 Commemorations. During this enquiry fifth year students and Ms Lynch explored ideas of zeitgeist, civic agency, public art, memorialization, and the use of visual and material language in our culture, past and present. Videographer Jenny Brady documented these dynamic investigations and the resulting film will be shown in the Draiocht Arts Centre in May. Transition Year students were also given the opportunity to work with local artist Dave West on a mosaic celebrating diversity and equality within the school. This Creative Engagement project was part funded by the NAPD, Fingal Arts and a Healthy Lifestyle fundraising event which took place in the Pavillions, Swords. The event was organised by the Parents Association, Sports Department, Home Economic Department and the Art Department to raise awareness around positive mental health. As the school year draws to a close, art students are now planning an end of year mural that will be used to celebrate the Sixth Year Graduation. Swords Castle work enters new phase

Contractors moved onto the Swords Castle site recently to commence the next phase in Fingal County Council’s development of the Swords Cultural Quarter. The council have appointed L&M Keating Ltd as main contractors to carry out improvement works at the castle. These works, which are scheduled to last six months, will concentrate on consolidating parts of the castle which are in poor structural repair. The current programme involves: *Masonry consolidation works on Gatehouse and Knights Chamber at end of Main Street, *Demolition of derelict buildings on North Street which block access to castle wall, *Removal of cabins and reconfiguration of temporary events information cabin inside castle walls, *Alterations to paths and landscaping inside castle, *Masonry consolidation works on East Wall range of castle, and *New external lighting and site services to facilitate better all-year 6

access within the castle. The demolition of the North Street buildings will facilitate necessary masonry consolidation works to the East range wall and these works will involve local traffic management on North Street including temporary closure of the footpath. The castle will remain open as a heritage attraction during the works which will provide better access and an improved visitor experience upon completion. Swords Castle is a National Monument and the works are subject to ministerial consent and oversight from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The works are partially funded under a grant issued under the European Regional Development Fund for Swords Cultural Quarter and this phase of the project will cost just under €500,000. The Swords Cultural Quarter will be a new major central public and civic space outside the castle featuring a new library and civic

centre building to sit alongside County Hall as well as new landscape interventions in the park and the town.

Swords Castle was originally built as the residence of the first AngloNorman Archbishop of Dublin around 1200 AD.

National Learning Network, Swords

The National Learning Network is situated on Balheary Road, Swords. We offer FREE courses to individuals who have experienced a health setback, long-term illness, or have a learning/ physical disability. We offer extra time and support on our courses so that our students will achieve their goals and needs met. Applicants’ social welfare benefits are retained. Our courses offer continuous intake so you can join them at any time of the year. Our classes generally run from 8.30/9am to 3pm or 4pm. We make allowances for medical or other appointments, depending on the student’s needs. Supports available include our Resource Teacher, Resource Officer and Resource Psychologist in conjunction with the Facilitator on the course. Learners are encouraged to find a career direction and try out several work experience placements to identify the path they wish to pursue. Each student has an Individual Action Plan that enables them to set their own goals while they are in training. Goals cover all aspects of a student’s life such

as health and well-being, attaining new skills, becoming interview and work ready and coping strategies for day to day life. Our courses are certified at QQI level 3, 4 and 5. The modules are designed to cover many aspects of Employability Skills, Personal Effectiveness, Health and Safety, Communications and Team Working. We have a variety of courses to provide for different student needs. Our courses are all designed to move students towards a career but this is achieved in several ways. Some courses are focused more on career exploration or coping with mental health challenges while others such as Business Administration helps in developing work, social and independent living skills. We recently had a certification event attended by Mo Flynn, CEO of Rehab Group. Alan Mullen, from Operation Transformation, gave a wonderful talk to the students as well as presenting 90 students with their certificates. There is also a focus on the social aspect of training and many events are held within and

At Christmas we have a meal in centre and a student choir to sing us into the Christmas Season. Personal Development is a key part of our training. There is a Yoga class and meditation group once a week that all students in the centre are invited to attend. Daily walks are part of many of our programmes and exercise is encouraged along with healthy eating and work/life balance. In the summer we have a Fun Day. Students can bring their friends and family along. This usually comprises of a barbecue, bouncy castle, raffle, games and music. Great fun has been had by all in the beautiful, spacious garden at the rear of the training centre. Each student gets the opportunity to do work experience placements in the local community. We have been very fortunate with the support that we have received from local employers. Work Experience placements are invaluable to our students’ career exploration and progression. Each course will go on cultural visits to local sites. Popular places are Skerries Mills, Bewleys lunchtime Play, Art Galleries, beaches, cinema and bowling. The students get the opportunity to choose where they would like to visit. As well as attending Job Fairs and college open days. There is a student committee that meets every 3–4 weeks, two representatives from each of our nine classes come together to talk about issues and plans that are relevant to them and their class. The committee is also very active in organising the fun day, Christmas and Halloween celebrations and being involved in developments in the centre. Past students have moved onto full and parttime employment, CE schemes, higher education and training. Scouts’ honour for local man Christy Fingal County Council recently held a civic reception at County Hall Swords to honour a local man. Chief of Scouting Ireland, Christy McCann, from Portrane, was recognised for his outstanding contribution to Scouting in Ireland, and in particular, his ongoing working relationship with Fingal, in the delivery of scouting facilities and events in the county. Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor presented Mr McCann with his award. “I am delighted to welcome Christy McCann and his wife Stephanie to the Council Chamber,” he said. “Christy, a proud Portrane resident, is the most senior officer in Scouting Ireland. “Scouting Ireland has evolved over time and has outlived its traditional image to become a modern organisation creating ‘tomorrow’s citizens’.” Mr McCann said: “I am proud to accept this award on behalf of Scouting Ireland as I am only one of 40,000.

“Scouting Ireland covers all 32 counties and we deal with a lot of councils. Fingal County Council have stepped up to the plate when it comes to engagement with Scouting Ireland. “On behalf of Scouting Ireland I would like to acknowledge Fingal County Council because we, in Scouting Ireland, want to create better communities and I believe Fingal County Council are our partners on that particular journey.” Tributes to Christy McCann, commending his work, were also paid by Cllr Joe Newman, Cllr Darragh Butler, Cllr Adrian Henchy, Cllr Paul Mulville and Cllr Malachy Quinn on the night. The council has worked extensively with Scouting Ireland over a number of years, delivering events such as the 2012 Jamóige Event in Ardgillan Castle, which was attended by 5,000 scouts. April 2016, saw another collaborative event, the Message of Peace Commemoration at Newbridge House, celebrating the 1916 Rising and remembering the

Rising exhibition launched in Swords

A new exhibition was launched in County Hall, Swords, by Mayor of Fingal, Councillor David O’Connor. ‘Fingal and the Fight for Irish Freedom’, curated by Fingal Local Studies & Archives, is a combination of multi-media, digital, interactive

and traditional displays and tells the story of many of the Fingallians who were involved in the events of Easter week. Fingal Local Studies & Archives has been collecting archives relating to this significant period in Ireland’s and Fingal’s history for a

number of years, and many of the items on display come from the council’s collections. Relatives and families of Fingallians involved in 1916 have also generously loaned family heirlooms, including letters home from the prisoners in Frongoch, and other memorabilia, to the Council, for the exhibition. Other museums such as Kilmainham Jail and Cork Municipal Museum have also lent items associated with Fingal. In attendance at the launch were the relatives and family of the original members of the Fingal 5th Battalion and the Baldoyle Irish Citizen Army unit. The exhibition was on display at County Hall before it moved to the Reading Room of Fingal Local Studies & Archives, 2nd Floor, Clonmel House, where it can be viewed by appointment. Archivist Colm McQuinn said: “The aim for this exhibition is to put on display in one place and at one time, the largest collection of original items and documents relating to the Fingallians who were involved in the events of 1916. “This exhibition reveals through its artefacts the story of Fingallians who were involved in the events of Easter week. “We hope it will bring people throughout Fingal together in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the fight for Irish freedom.”

Busy period for Applewood Community Centre

Applewood Community Centre

So many new communties sprung up during the boom years for house building with Applewood being just one of them. However, when the boom turned to bust a lot of these communities were left with a dearth of facilities for sport and recreation. Fortunately in the case of this particular Swords estate this was not the case. Applewood Community Centre has been a huge success since it opened in the area. It has

experienced a very busy first six months of 2016 and those who manage it and use the facilities are looking forward to an equally busy second half of the year. There is currently a wide variety of groups in the centre. Dance groups include Caden Dance Academy, Irish School of Ballet and Kinsella Ballet. Fitness classes include Pure Pilates, Zumba with Eva, Mum and Baby.ie Yoga and Dance

Fit Zumba. Classes for children include Little Gymstars, Brick Club, YouRitMix gymnastics, Aloha, Tae Kwondo, Deutsch in Dublin, and the FAI afterschool club. Other groups that meet in the centre include the Alzheimer’s Association, Anam Cara, Spanish El Sol, Cuidiu, Applepips Parent and Toddler Group and Creative Touch. Appleseeds Childcare have their home in the centre and run a breakfast club, afterschool and preschool for children from four-years-of-age. Many of the football teams are back outside for the summer season which means there is more availability in the state-of-the-art sports hall over the summer months. If you and your friends would like to book the hall for football, basketball or badminton please give the centre a call to book. They have all the equipment which is included in the hire fee. Do you dread the mess after your child’s birthday party every year? Then why not have your party in Applewood Community Centre? Your child can avail of a football or a dance party or indeed you can bring entertainers in yourself. 200g plain flour Pinch of salt 4 eggs 600ml milk 2 Tbsp sunflower oil 4 Tbsp sugar 1 Tsp vanilla essence 4 Tbsp lemon juice (optional)

Method

Whisk together all wet ingredients then sieve in the flour and whisk in to remove lumps. Then ad sugar and mix. Heat a small amount of sunflower oil or butter in a non stick pan and ad a ladle full at a time and swirl to make sure mixture covers pan in a thin layer. Cook each one on a medium heat for about 40sec-1minute until set. When set flip over. Cook for about a further 30-40sec. Let cool slightly then fill with your favourite filling. POPULAR show is returning to North County Dublin this month. Flavours of Fingal, now in its fifth year, will take place on the weekend of June 25 and 26 at Newbridge House and Farm, Donabate. Supported by Fingal County Council, this year’s Flavours of Fingal will be another action packed two-day event, combining the sights and sounds of a traditional agricultural show with an unforgettable food and family fun experience. Just a stone’s throw from city life, the event offers real value for money, unbeatable food and the ultimate farming experience for the whole family to Flavours of Fingal will again host a mix of foodie and farming attractions including food stalls boasting locally produced delicacies, craft and cooking demos, ‘Babe’ style sheepdog trials and a range of livestock shows.
