Mobile Monuments visit Swords for Commemorative Day

Fingal County Council’s Centenary Programme saw over 50 lectures, film screenings, performances, re-enactments, talks and exhibitions cumulate in a special Commemorative Day in Swords on April 24. Among the many eye-catching projects was ‘Mobile Monuments’, a series of sculptures built on three rickshaw tricycles that have the capacity to fold out and transform into colourful sites for performance and gathering when they arrive at their destinations. The council launched the first of its new public artworks in Kenure Park, Rush earlier in the month as part of its packed Centenary Programme. The first in a series of three sculptures was unveiled to the public through a performance by artists Rhona Byrne and Yvonne McGuinness and the students of St Catherine’s National School, Rush. The artists worked in collaboration with a number of local senior and school groups to create Mobile Monuments which also travelled to Garristown and Castleheany in advance of Fingal’s flagship Commemorative Day at Swords Castle. The artists created these art pieces through workshops with Swords Senior Citizens, Rush ICA, Swords Educate Together, St Mary’s National School, Garristown, St Catherine’s National School in Rush and Castaheany Educate Together. The artists and the groups created props, banners, costumes and performances for the project. 4

Through the workshops the groups explored various themes associated with the activities and the collective thinking around the 1916 rising. The availability and use of bicycles was a key component in the transfer of information as many of the messages delivered to the volunteers would have been by bicycle, often by a female messenger such as Mary (Molly) Adrien who delivered dispatches from Pearse in the GPO to Thomas Ashe in the Swords area. Bicycles were also a symbol of freedom, especially for women as it allowed them to put greater distances away from their homeplace and move towards the greater independence that would unfold in the coming years. Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid, reflecting on the council’s 1916 Commemorative Programme, said: “The men and women from Fingal in 1916, who played a vital role in the Rising were very young, politically active and socially aware, just as Fingal today is diverse, youthful, vibrant, engaged and socially aware.” Caroline Cowley, Public Art Co-ordinator with Fingal County Council, said: “Mobile Monuments is an ambitious and vibrant commission which has provided a unique

opportunity for us to engage with Fingal’s younger citizens to re-imagine the activities which led up to 1916, while allowing us to question what purpose a monument serves in how we remember and commemorate. On April 15, the Mobile Monuments travelled to Garristown where the students from Swords Educate Together and St Mary’s National School unveiled the artworks with a performance on the Main Street. This was followed by a celebration in the presence of Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor, Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid. Members of the public were then invited into the community centre for refreshments. Artists Rhona Byrne and Yvonne McGuinness worked on the Mobile Monuments project.

On April 15 there was a major boost for the local area when the sod was turned on the Liam Rodgers Community Centre in Drinan. Named in memory of the late Liam Rodgers, who passed away in 2009, the facility will have a sports hall that can cater to the needs of the local sporting groups and organisations. The facility will also comprise meeting rooms that will cater to the various youth clubs, ladies’ clubs, seniors’ groups, residents’ associations and more. Speaking at the sod turning event, Mayor of Fingal, Councillor David O’Connor said the council is delighted that the construction of the Liam Rodgers Community Centre in Drinan has commenced. “This facility will make a huge difference for the community and will benefit young and old alike,” he said. Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid said: “We are delighted to see the community coming together to work with Fingal County Council to make this facility a reality.” Construction has commenced on the centre and will take approximately 15 months and Fingal County Council look forward to working with the local community in developing the facility.

Swords groups invited to enter awards Residents, businesses and community groups in Swords have been invited to take part in this year’s Fingal County Council Cleaner Communities Awards. The awards were established with the aim of recognising the efforts that local people go to in order to keep their areas clean. The council recently launched the awards which have seen participation grow year on year. Projects can range from large to small scale, under several categories, both business and residential, and are open

Local students enjoyed big success in this year’s 62nd Texaco Children’s Art Competition. Ryan Bouakkaz (8), from St Cronan’s Junior National School, Swords, won second prize (€150 Art & Hobby gift voucher) in the 7-8 years of age category for his work entitled ‘Spring Flowers’. He attended a function to announce the top winners, in the Dublin City Hugh Lane Gallery, along with his father Abdel, mother Louisa and brother Sabri (11). Nicole Halpin (13), from Malahide Community School, was also another proud winner, claiming third prize (€200) in the 12-13 age category for her work entitled ‘Love Is…’. In total, 40 students from Dublin will receive prizes which will be presented at an awards ceremony in Dublin later this month when all of the 126 top prize-winners will be in attendance. The prestigious Texaco Children’s Art competition has been running for over six decades and continues to attract fantastic entries from all over the country. The aim of the competition is to encourage and support children through art.

Thousands visit Swords for Commemorative Day In excess of 10,000 people attended the flagship event of the Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme which took place in Swords on April 24. The Family Commemorative Day featured a State ceremonial event with the raising of the flag and the reading of the Proclamation by Captain John Quinn, followed by a parade and additional family events culminating in a fireworks display. This flagship event, which was organised by Fingal County Council, was held to commemorate the contribution made by the men and women of Fingal to the events of 1916. Old Fingal IRA Commemoration held

The Fingal Old IRA held its 2016 Centenary Commemoration ceremony on Easter Sunday, with a ceremony at St. Patrick’s Church, Donabate, followed by a parade to the old cemetery. One of the highlight events of the Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme, the ceremony commemorated the Fingallians who took part in the 1916 Rising and, in particular, the Battle of Ashbourne. Following the ceremony by Fr Pat Hannion at St. Patrick’s Church, the Black Raven Pipe Band led a parade from the Beaverstown Road to the Old Cemetery. A variety of family activities were then held including a reading of the proclamation, a performance of the ‘Last Post’, the traditional final salute to the fallen and the rising of the Irish flag. The ‘Easter 1916: Fingal Fights for Freedom’ exhibition was then opened in the Parish Hall and there were performances by Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society and Tower Singing Circle’s production of ‘Resurrection’ and ‘Donabate Reminisces’. Noel McAllister, chairman of Fingal Old IRA, said: “The part that Fingal played in the fight for Irish freedom is a unique story that needs to be told. “This annual commemoration by the Fingal Old IRA honours the legacy of the Fifth Battalion and secures its place in the memory of future generations. “In this particularly significant year, we are delighted that so many residents of Fingal joined us in commemorating the rich legacy of Fingal and the birth of the Irish State.”

On a roll! Fingal Film Festival now open for submissions The Fingal Film Festival is now open for submissions in Animation – Feature – Short – Student - Documentary – Scannan Gaeilge Is Fearr – International - 1916 films related. The fifth instalment of Fingal Film Festival’s annual event will take place in Movies@swords, Pavilions Centre, Swords, from September 30 to October 2. “The 2015 event saw bigger screening and workshop attendances, proving that the festival is the best independent festival to have your work seen by large audiences and is a fantastic platform for emerging filmmakers from Ireland and abroad,” says Liz Kenny, the festival’s managing director. Creative director Dave Byrne says: “Our focus for 2016 is to create a festival that is diverse in content, offering an interactive experience with filmmakers and cinema goers alike during this year’s event, a challenge I and the team are looking forward to.” As part of the centenary celebrations in 2016, the festival will be dedicating a slot in the schedule for all subjects relating to the 1916 Rising. Any filmmakers creating content in any of the mediums screened at the festival are encouraged to submit for possible inclusion in the Fingal Film Festival 2016. The awards are in nine categories as follows for

Easy Banana & Blueberry Bread Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • 14

285g/10oz plain flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp salt 110g/4oz butter, plus extra for greasing 225g/8oz caster sugar 2 free-range eggs 4 ripe bananas, mashed ½ cup of blueberries 85ml/3fl oz buttermilk (or normal milk mixed with 1½ tsp lemon juice or vinegar) 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. 3. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. 4. Add the eggs, mashed bananas, blueberries, buttermilk and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Fold in the flour mixture. 5. Grease a 20cm x 12.5cm/8in x 5in loaf tin and pour the cake mixture into the tin. 6. Transfer to the oven and bake for about an hour, or until well-risen and golden-brown. 7. Obesity in our pets Is my pet overweight?

If you are unsure that your pet is overweight then he/she probably isn’t. The best way to check is to simply look. All dogs and cats should have some shape to their bodies with a thinner waste than torso. Run your hands down along their chest. You should be able to easily feel their ribs without having to put too much pressure on. If you are finding it difficult to feel their ribs then they may be overweight. To find out how overweight they are, you then move to their waist. Can you see a visible wasteline? If not, then yes our pet is overweight.

Main causes of obesity

The main reason is over consumption of food. This maybe extra treats, table scraps or just too much of their normal dinner. Like humans, all animals have their recommended daily amount of food they should be fed. This can be found on any bag of food depending on the weight of the animal. But this is a full day’s amount of food so it doesn’t include the extra treats. To add the daily treat that you give, make sure to take away from their daily dinner. For example, Fido’s recommended intake for the day is 200 grams. He gets two dental sticks a day, so when it comes to measuring out his dinner

he should only get 160 grams, working out that each dental stick is roughly 20 grams. This of course is a rough calculation and you should check your treat packs for the proper measurements. Also, feed for the weight your dog should be, not when he is if he is overweight. Table scraps work the same way, but they are not as easy to work out and also most human food is higher in salt than dog food and should always be avoided. Just stick with the dog food. Neutering: When someone says “neutering causes obesity’’, they are not entirely wrong. But the reason it causes increase in weight is because your pet has had an operation to remove a body organ, so now he/she has one less organ that needs energy. After you get your pet neutered take one teaspoon of nuts away from their dinner. This will prevent her/him gaining weight. Health risks following obesity: These are not only caused by obesity but it is a contributing factor. •Arthritis •Reduced life span •Heart disease •Respiratory difficulties •Liver and kidney disease

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class arrives on the market designed for long journeys, heated armrests in the doors and centre console and a choice of 64 interior LED lighting colours. Optionally available are two high-resolution 12.3inch display screens (a first in the segment) and three different wide-screen instrument cluster styles. A wide choice of materials and colour combinations gives owners scope to ‘individualise’ the interior. It is the first car ever to feature touch-sensitive finger swipe buttons on the steering wheel which the driver can use to control the infotainment system while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. Mobile phones with the inductive charge facility can be charged and connected with no need for cables or a telephone holder. Model & Price In Ireland, focus is being placed on the E220d Avantgarde Automatic at €52,850 ex works – which represents a price decrease of €850 compared to the previous model. Also available to order will be Exclusive (€55,210) and AMG versions (€57,650). Available also is an E350d version at €66,900. Further model variants to follow in time will include an E350e hybrid and a powerful V6 E350d. Engine Aerodynamically, it has a drag coefficient of 0.23. Under the bonnet, a completely new engine on which Mercedes-Benz spent some €2.6 billion in development costs delivers a 17% weight reduction, lower fuel consumption (3.9 litres/100Km combined), lower C02 (102g/km), increased horsepower (194 HP), 400Nm of torque and lower road tax (€190). Driver Assistance Systems Amongst its standard fitments is Active Brake Assist, providing support during emergency braking, Attention Assist with adjustable sensitivity to alert the driver to inattentiveness or drowsiness and Crosswind Assist, which mitigates the effects of strong crosswinds. An optional Driver Assistance package offers a further suite of safety features that Mercedes-Benz claims makes the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in its class, one being a system that moves the driver or front passenger away from the danger zones when an imminent lateral collision is detected. Another safety innovation is a sound warning that triggers reflexes and prepares occupants if the risk of a collision is detected. Commenting, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland, said that buoyed by an unprecedented level of interest and a bank of pre-launch orders far into treble-digit territory, the new E-Class will play an important role in underpinning the position of Mercedes-Benz as flag-carrier in the luxury segment. “Exceptional in every respect, it will redefine standards in the businessclass, not least in its outstanding specifications and highly competitive priceto-value proposition,” he said.

Appearance sophisticated, elegant and stylishly sporty, the new E-Class has all of the characteristics one expects in a Mercedes-Benz saloon. Its long bonnet, 43mm longer body and 65mm longer wheelbase work with a coupé-like roofline and broad-shouldered rear to replicate lines familiar in the recently-introduced S-Class and C-Class models. Three style and equipment lines are offered - Avantgarde, Exclusive and AMG. As before, buyers can choose between models with a bonnetmounted star and louvered grille favoured by regular E-Class owners or one with grille inset star likely to appeal to more sporty buyers. Price-Value  Maintaining Mercedes-Benz’s price-value offering - whereby features that previously came only as options are now included as standard - the entry level Avantgarde model is equipped with over €7,000 worth of standard features compared to the outgoing version. Included is Parking Pilot parking assist, heated front seats, full leather upholstery, reversing camera, LED static lights, satellite navigation, mirror pack, ambient lighting, stowage pack, ‘through loading’ feature, seat comfort pack, alarm pack and a ‘connect me’ function. Standard on all models is 9G Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission.
