A Season of Family, Community and Christmas Spirit As the winter sets in Fingal, bringing crisp mornings, shorter days and that all too familiar chill, it brings a growing sense of excitement in the air in our towns and villages with preparations for Christmas beginning to take shape! From Swords to Balbriggan; Malahide to Rush, and the many villages in between, Fingal begins to take on a special glow at this time of year. Shop windows sparkle, Christmas lights brighten our streets, and local businesses prepare for the busiest season on the calendar. Community groups, volunteers and local organisations are already working behind the scenes to make the coming weeks memorable for residents of all ages. For many, Christmas means welcoming loved ones home, sharing a meal around the table and creating memories that will last long after the decorations have been packed away. For children, it is a time of wonder and anticipation; for older generations, an opportunity to share traditions and stories that

connect families across the years. Remembering those who may find this season difficult is also of equal importance. Loneliness, financial pressures and the loss of loved ones can make winter a challenging time. A simple phone call, an invitation for a cup of tea or a helping hand to a neighbour can make an enormous difference. The true strength of Fingal lies in its people and their willingness to look out for one another. As Christmas approaches, let us support our local businesses, attend community events and make time for those around us. Whether through volunteering, donating to a local cause or simply offering a warm greeting on a cold morning, every small gesture counts. Winter may bring darkness earlier, but together we can ensure Fingal shines brightly with kindness, generosity and hope. That is the real spirit of Christmas. The Locals Team

Local Tony Wilkins speaks about his journey as a member of Swords Toastmasters Would you like to build your confidence in public speaking? Have you grown tired of letting fear hold you back? This September, take the first step towards overcoming this fear by visiting Swords Toastmasters for an obligation-free meeting. Discover a supportive and encouraging environment where you can develop your communication and leadership skills while gaining the confidence to speak with ease.” That’s exactly what member Tony Wilkins did 6 year’s when he wanted to meet the challenge head on. Tony said “I joined during Covid simply to break the monotony and just to have a look. Well, I have never looked back and last year, was honoured with the presidency of the Club. Like many before and after me, I left it late to find Swords Toastmasters and join. What I found was a group of people with tremendous knowledge, wisdom, skill and experience. In what you might say - in all aspects of life coaching. The ability of the Club and its members to bring a person out of that uncomfortable place into a secure environment where you gain the confidence to meet, talk, express yourself; to engage with others, who were usually all from that uncomfortable place originally; to prepare

a short speech and present it, to receive and accept feedback about it and to move on and prepare a slightly longer and better presentation. It is also structured to suit the individual’s needs and no one is ever pressurised and the confidence that flows is so very evident for all to see, not least by the very person who walked in the door some weeks earlier needing that lift, that boost that hits the reset button. Swords Toastmasters is a club that helps people develop their public speaking, listening, and leadership skills, in a fun and supportive environment. Members join for a variety of reasons. Some, to progress their careers, to perform better at interviews, to practice for workplace presentations, or even for that all important wedding speech. If you would like to see Tony and his fellow Toastmasters in action, get in touch today, for an obligation-free visit. Perhaps you will be inspired to take the first step towards finding your own voice and changing your life! Swords Toastmasters meets every 2nd Monday from September – June from 8pm to 10pm in the Old Borough National School, Swords, K67 Y179 For more information, email swordstm@ gmail.com or contact the membership officer on 085 8100411. Clayface (2026): A Flesh-Stretching Ride Through Gotham’s Underbelly

Splash out

on a new bathroom

By Jack Shanley Comic book cinema takes a sharp, bloody turn into full-throttle body horror with DC Studios’ Clayface, directed by James Watkins (The Woman in Black). Written by horror veteran Mike Flanagan, the film completely strips away traditional superhero tropes, delivering a gritty, standalone origin story that leans heavily into visceral gore and B-movie thrills rather than glossy spectacle. The story focuses on Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), a vain ambitious actor driven on the brink of a big break in his career. Following a tragic exposure to a volatile experimental compound, Hagen’s body begins to mutate, breaking down his flesh. Rather than seeking a cure, Hagen uses his grotesque new ability to morph his appearance to inflict revenge on those who wronged him in Hollywood and Gotham’s dark underworld. Naomi Ackie co-stars as Caitlyn, a scientist whose complex role in Hagen’s transformation echoes classic Frankenstein themes, though the narrative occasionally leaves her underutilized. What makes Clayface stand out from the crowded superhero genre is its refusal to rely on standard franchise formulas. There are no Batman cameos, nod-to-the-camera universe setups, or mid-credits teasers. Instead, Watkins orchestrates a dark, atmospheric thrill ride that relies heavily on practical makeup effects and skin-crawling transformations reminiscent of 1980s horror classics. Harries gives a committed, unhinged performance, capturing both the tragic desperation and the narcissistic malice of a man losing his humanity piece by piece. However, the film isn’t without its flaws. The pacing stumbles from time to time throughout the film. Hagen’s moral descent can make it difficult to root for him as a protagonist but there could be no in some way an argument for him being a character study. When the movie leans into its squeamish, practical-effects-heavy horror—in a chaotic final act—it achieves an incredibly gruesome identity of its own Clayface overall may be too stomach-churning for the average casual viewer seeking a lighthearted comic book adventure, but for genre fans looking for a dark, gruesome and unapologetic horror movie, it offers a refreshingly nasty night at the cinema. In all truth I’d recommend checking out ‘Clayface’ and see what you think of it, I shall give it a score of Three ½ stars. You can watch it at your local cinema today. Director: James Watkins – Rating: 16 – Genre: Horror/Action – Run Time: 1h 48m - Language: English. For more film content please follow @screen_.addicts on Instagram. 6

Birds on The Green

A beautiful new sculpture recently appeared on The Green (opposite the nursing home on the Rathbeal Road), in Swords. The project was a collaboration between Swords Tidy Towns and Fingal County Council’s Operations Department. It represents a selection of the Bird life of Swords - Heron, Egret, Kingfisher and Raven. All of which are present and recorded in previous ecology surveys. The sculpture was made by renowned Mullingar wood carving artist, Richie Clark.

St Colmcille’s U13 girls are Cup finalists for the time

History was made in St Colmcille’s GAA Club in Swords in October as its Under-13 girls’ football team has become the first female team from the club to reach a Cup Final. The achievement is a testament to the determination, commitment and team spirit of a remarkable group of young girls who have gone from strength to strength throughout the season. Through hard work, resilience and mutual respect, the players have grown not only as footballers but as a team, supporting and encouraging one another every step of the way. Guided by their dedicated coaches, Aaron Daly, Lorraine Johnson and Sean McCormack, the girls demonstrated that success in sport is about much more than results on the scoreboard. Their journey

reflects the importance of friendship, respect, hard work and creating a team environment where everyone feels valued and included. The whole club is immensely proud of the girls. Speaking ahead of the final, the coaching team said: “We couldn’t be prouder of this group of girls. They’ve worked incredibly hard, shown great resilience when things haven’t gone their way and, most importantly, they’ve always looked out for one another. Respect, teamwork and inclusion are at the heart of what we try to build as coaches, and these girls demonstrate those values every time they step onto the pitch. To reach a Cup Final and make history for the club is a fantastic achievement, but we’re equally proud

of the confident, supportive young women they’re becoming. Whatever happens in the final, they’ve already made us all proud.” New Players Welcome – Be Part of Something Special! These young footballers are helping to pave the way for the next generation within the club and St Colmcille’s Swords is encouraging more girls, boys from the age of 4 years of age upwards to the men’s senior team and the Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others team, come along and give Gaelic football a try. Whether you’re an experienced player or have never kicked a football before, there’s a place for you at the club.

Will We Have More Lotto Millionaires? By Dave Kavanagh Well, statistically, the short answer is “Yes” but we know what they say, “there are liars, damn liars and statisticians”. The recent changes that saw the company that runs the Irish National Lottery, reduce your choice of six numbers from 1-47, to 1-45, therefore reducing the chance of winning the jackpot from 1 in 10.7million, back to 1 in 8.1million, which is what it was up to 2015 before they increased the numbers. When the Irish Lotto first started it was 6 numbers from 36 but following a syndicate realising that they could purchase all combinations for less than a million pounds and guarantee a jackpot win, the amount of numbers was increased. In addition to the slightly better odds of winning the jackpot, they have also increased the prize money for winning Lotto Plus 2 from €250,000 to €1million (the same as Lotto Plus 1) so statistically, there is a higher probability that we will see a higher number of people win at least €1million. By comparison, anyone in Ireland that has Serious Illness Cover (AKA Critical Illness cover or Specified Illness Cover) has a 1 in 4 chance of making a claim before they reach the age of 65. Now, 1 in 4 sounds a lot better odds than 1 in 8.1million but human nature being what it is, people don’t want to think about bad things happening to them. They would rather think

of good things happening to them, so they will happily spend their hard-earned money on the Lotto or even Euromillions (which has even higher odds to win the jackpot of 1 in almost 140million) than consider spending some of it on protection type plans, such as serious illness cover. When we see the vast amount of claims paid out by the life companies every year and also the amount of people diagnosed with illnesses that are covered, the real gamble is not having cover in place.

Dave Kavanagh QFA has been advising people financially for over 25 years. Combined with his previous role of gym/nutrition adviser, he regularly gives talks and workshops at seminars and events for groups, companies and government departments on financial wellbeing, positivity and motivation. As heard on RTE 2FM , LMFM and TV3.

By Mike Power Tom Kettle (Feb 1880-Sept 1916) Thomas Michael Kettle (9th Feb 1880- 9 Sept 1916), born near Swords of a distinguished Irish nationalist family, was a barrister, journalist, economist, poet and Irish parliamentary MP for East Tyrone (1906-1910). Kettle’s father, Andrew Kettle (born Drynam Hse, Swords 1833), was a major Irish Nationalist politician of that day, considered by many to be ‘Parnell’s right-hand man’. Thomas Kettle was a distinguished member of that progressive group of Irish intellectuals who held a new, European vision of what Ireland’s destiny was to be. James Joyce considered Kettle to be his best Irish friend. Privately educated, Kettle went on to study at UCD where he distinguished himself as a brilliant scholar and orator. Elected President of the prestigious Literary and Historical Society there, he was supported by famous contemporaries such as Francis Sheehy-Skeffington and Oliver St John Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

Gogarty. The earlier photo shows Kettle in his legal robes on the occasion of being called to the Irish bar (1905).In 1908 he became Prof. of Economic Studies at UCD, representing Ireland at many important European conferences and meetings. Both a Nationalist and a Europhile, Kettle consistently campaigned on behalf of oppressed minorities, echoing the humanitarian campaigns of his contemporary Roger Casement .Kettle actively supported the Dublin worker’s strike of 1913, wielding his journalistic pen skilfully on their behalf. Kettle’s bronze bust in St Stephen’s Green by sculptor Albert Power though completed in 1921, was only finally erected in 1937. Service in the British army was dimly viewed by the Irish Free State Authorities of that day, occasioning this delay. Tom Kettle was undoubtedly one of the most

talented men ever too walk the streets of Swords. Rather in the mode of Michael Collins later, his premature death at 36 years was an irreparable loss for Swords, for Fingal, and for Ireland too.
