A Season of Family, Community and Christmas Spirit connect families across the years. Remembering those who may find this season difficult is also of equal importance. Loneliness, financial pressures and the loss of loved ones can make winter a challenging time. A simple phone call, an invitation for a cup of tea or a helping hand to a neighbour can make an enormous difference. The true strength of Fingal lies in its people and their willingness to look out for one another. As Christmas approaches, let us support our local businesses, attend community events and make time for those around us. Whether through volunteering, donating to a local cause or simply offering a warm greeting on a cold morning, every small gesture counts. Winter may bring darkness earlier, but together we can ensure Fingal shines brightly with kindness, generosity and hope. That is the real spirit of Christmas.
As the winter sets in Fingal, bringing crisp mornings, shorter days and that all too familiar chill, it brings a growing sense of excitement in the air in our towns and villages with preparations for Christmas beginning to take shape! From Swords to Balbriggan; Malahide to Rush, and the many villages in between, Fingal begins to take on a special glow at this time of year. Shop windows sparkle, Christmas lights brighten our streets, and local businesses prepare for the busiest season on the calendar. Community groups, volunteers and local organisations are already working behind the scenes to make the coming weeks memorable for residents of all ages. For many, Christmas means welcoming loved ones home, sharing a meal around the table and creating memories that will last long after the decorations have been packed away. For children, it is a time of wonder and anticipation; for older generations, an opportunity to share traditions and stories that

Rush AFC awarded with ‘Fabric of the Community’ programme The members of Rush AFC are delighted to learn that they have been awarded with the Shein ‘Fabric of the Community’ award, with the North County Dublin football club receiving €10,000 to support its work with young people and families in the local community. The programme is offering a total of €40,000 to grassroots organisations across Ireland this year, including charities, community groups, sports clubs, youth organisations and social enterprises, with three further monthly awards to be made between now and the end of 2026. Founded in 1970, Rush Athletic FC has almost 500 active players, including more than 100 girls and ladies, and has grown significantly in recent years. The club was awarded FAI Clubmark accreditation in 2022, recognising its commitment to governance, safeguarding and standards in grassroots football, and its former players include Irish international
Izzy Atkinson, who represented Ireland at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup. “We are delighted to be the first recipient of the SHEIN ‘Fabric of the Community’ programme awards,” Shay Dempsey, Chairman of Rush Athletic Football Club, said. “We want to make sure that every child who wants to play football has the opportunity to do so. This funding will help us continue to provide that opportunity

Dail Report – O’Donoghue Calls for Additional Garda Presence Concerns over rising antisocial behaviour in Dublin Fingal West have been raised in the Dáil, with Deputy O’Donoghue calling for greater Garda visibility and resources across the area. Speaking during the debate, O’Donoghue said the region had a strong community spirit and was “a fantastic part of the country”, but a lack of visible Garda resources was allowing some individuals to take advantage of communities. The Deputy pointed to a serious incident at Skerries Harbour during the summer, as well as concerns about open drug dealing in local towns and raised the issue of teenagers recording vicious attacks and sharing footage on social media. While acknowledging that local gardaí were doing their best, he said they needed additional resources and a stronger presence within the communities they serve. Deputy O’Donoghue specifically highlighted Garda stations in Rush, Lusk and Skerries, 8
RUSH LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2026
saying the towns now each have populations of more than 10,000 people and that stations are currently open for just two hours a week, arguing that this level of access was insufficient for growing communities. He called on the Government to address the issue directly and to increase the number of Gardaí working in the North County, both on local streets and in Garda stations. Minister Chambers said he appreciated the concerns raised about growing communities in Dublin Fingal West and acknowledged reports of increased antisocial behaviour in recent months. He said the Government had sought to significantly expand Garda numbers and that increased civilianisation would also allow for the redeployment of gardaí to frontline duties. Minister Chambers said he would seek specific information from the Minister for Justice on Garda allocations and would relay the Deputy O’Donoghues concerns.

Will We Have More Lotto Millionaires? By Dave Kavanagh Well, statistically, the short answer is “Yes” but we know what they say, “there are liars, damn liars and statisticians”. The recent changes that saw the company that runs the Irish National Lottery, reduce your choice of six numbers from 1-47, to 1-45, therefore reducing the chance of winning the jackpot from 1 in 10.7million, back to 1 in 8.1million, which is what it was up to 2015 before they increased the numbers. When the Irish Lotto first started it was 6 numbers from 36 but following a syndicate realising that they could purchase all combinations for less than a million pounds and guarantee a jackpot win, the amount of numbers was increased. In addition to the slightly better odds of winning the jackpot, they have also increased the prize money for winning Lotto Plus 2 from €250,000 to €1million (the same as Lotto Plus 1) so statistically, there is a higher probability that we will see a higher number of people win at least €1million. By comparison, anyone in Ireland that has Serious Illness Cover (AKA Critical Illness cover or Specified Illness Cover) has a 1 in 4 chance of making a claim before they reach the age of 65. Now, 1 in 4 sounds a lot better odds than 1 in 8.1million but human nature being what it is, people don’t want to think about bad things happening to them. They would rather think
12
RUSH LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2026
of good things happening to them, so they will happily spend their hard-earned money on the Lotto or even Euromillions (which has even higher odds to win the jackpot of 1 in almost 140million) than consider spending some of it on protection type plans, such as serious illness cover. When we see the vast amount of claims paid out by the life companies every year and also the amount of people diagnosed with illnesses that are covered, the real gamble is not having cover in place.
