Share the love by not sharing Covid 19 Well what can we say,tighter Covid 19 restrictions have come into force in Dublin City and county in an effort to stem rising levels of the virus.The new rules came into force in the city and the surrounding county recently and all because some of us became too far too complacent about following the HSE advice. For the next few weeks, people will be discouraged from leaving the city and county unless for essential reasons.The one plus in all this is we should shop locally and ensure local jobs. However we need to strictly following the Government rules. Once again we are being asked to work from home where possible and only to make essential journeys on public transport. In Dublin city visitors to private homes and gardens should be limited to a maximum number of six from one other household.There are to be no organised indoor gatherings and outdoor gatherings are to be up to a maximum of 15. Restaurants and pubs that had been serving food will only be allowed to cater outdoors, to a maximum of 14 people, or provide a take-away service. Maybe this is the sharp shock we all needed to remind us about the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keep our distance when meeting others. So, lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as possible and stay safe. We all have mothers, children, spouses, partners and family we love and do not want to see ill, so please, please lets share the love by not sharing the Covid 19 virus and hopefully we can flatten the curve again soon. That way we can have a quality of life once again.Stay Safe and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all each other. The Locals team.

Members commuted to Golf by Rowboat

Contributed by Malahide Historical Society Up until 1973 when the Island Golf Club built a new clubouse at the northern end of the course and more accessible by road, golfers commuting to the Island golf course were rowed over and back from Malahide by local boatmen. Depending on the state of the tide golfers boarded from a long wooden stage or in later years from the concrete slip and disembarked onto a much longer stage on the opposite shore. The signal to the

boatmen to collect golfers was a large disc which was hinged in the centre and could be seen from the Malahide shore. When the disc was in the closed position it was green and blended in with the side wall of the Clubhouse. When opened it showed red and white and was a sign to the boatmen to come and collect golfers. A sudden deterioration in the weather might cause the suspension of the ferry service and require a laborious journey home by train from Donabate or by hackney or whatever transport available via Swords. There were legendary characters among

both the boatmen and their passengers and Island members still regale each other and their visitors with wonderful tales of those days. On either side of the main slip are stout wooden posts standing several feet proud of the sand. Probably at least a hundred years in situ, these are the sole survivors of a series of such posts along the shoreline of The Green. They were used in the days of sailing ships as mooring posts and for hauling them close to the shore for unloading over the side at low water. They were also employed to help turn vessels as required.

In the current climate regarding Covid-19, many are even getting their mortgage protec-tion in place early and extending the term so that they are certain of having cover in place, when it is time to draw down the home loan. Once cover is in place, any new medical issues that arise will not be relevant.

Applications now open for financial assistance for Festivals in 2021 Fingal County Council’s Events Unit is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for financial assistance for Festivals and Events taking place in 2021. Applications from groups and organisations seeking financial assistance from Fingal County Council’s Events Section for Festivals and Events taking place in 2021 will close on Tuesday, 15 December 2020, at 3pm. All applications should include a Covid compliance plan in adherence with current government guidelines. Applications will be accepted for existing and/or new events or festivals which animate public spaces in creative and innovative ways, and which are focused on developing measurable tourism impacts in the County. inclusive.Clearly demonstrate potential to generate economic, social and/or cultural benefits. Fingal Festival of History 2020 launched in Swords Castle

The fourth annual Fingal Festival of History was launched by the Mayor of Fingal Cllr. David Healy recentlyThis year’s festival took place online with all talks being made available on the Fingal Libraries YouTube channel and social media platforms throughout the week of the festival. The centenary of the Sack of Balbriggan takes place this year and provides the main theme for our Festival.This year’s programme again featured the History at the Castle day with a variety of speakers presenting on topics relating to the Sack of Balbriggan, the War of Independence and other political conditions relevant during this period of Ireland’s history.The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. David Healy said: “With everything that

has happened so far this year it is important to have a perspective on things. It is important that we take time to look back on our history, and it is fantastic that this year’s Festival of History will still be taking place. Like most events these days it will be done differently with all the history talks being recorded in the Chapel at Swords Castle. I would like to thank all of the Library staff of Fingal County Council who have made these talks possible.” Talks which were recorded in the Chapel at Swords Castle included a retrospective view of the Sack of Balbriggan from local historian and former Senior Librarian, Fingal libraries, Jim Walsh, events interlinked to

The Green Flag Award scheme is also operating across Australia, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.The green Flag Award scheme aims to encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways.The Green Flag Award Scheme encourages high environmental performance and good management. Parks and green spaces are judged against eight key criteria. Where certain criteria are not met, applicants can provide justifications that may be taken into account. What’s more, if management practice changes are in progress but not yet fully implemented, transitional phases

will be acknowledged and viewed positively.The judging criteria also considers the fact that each park/ green space will offer different kinds of facilities and will be managed and developed to varying opportunities and constraints. Congratulations also to Swords Tidy Towns who were awarded a Community Green Flag for their Rock Garden Project on the Rathbeale Road, the first time a Green Flag has been awarded in Fingal for a Community Project.

My name is Aoife Hannon and I’m a cub in the CuChulainn Troop in Malahide Sea Scouts. During the lockdown, like everyone else we did loads of Zoom meetings because we couldn’t meet up face to face. We also had to do challenges and tasks. We made Easter cards for the people in a Nursing home and we kept a Good Deeds diary. As soon as lockdown finished, the first proper activity that we did was kayaking. As it was summer time, we spent the summer doing water activities including boogie boarding, kayaking and surfing. Unfortunately we could not do sailing due to social distancing. We also did a hike because that’s what cubs do. We have not yet been back in the Den since lockdown due to the risk of contamination and close quarters but I hope that we can go back soon and play some of our favourite games like pelting the leaders in Dodgeball ! Some of us are leaving this year, including myself, and moving to Scouts. We have been working on our Chief Scout Award and to do this we must earn a lot of badges by doing many activities which will give us useful skills for life. Normally we do these at our meetings and do them as a group but, because of Covid -19, we have had to do them by ourselves. Thanks to our leader, Eoin, we were able to do lots of these tasks at home and send videos or pictures of what we achieved as proof. Our parents had to help a lot too. Now we are having all our activities outdoors so we have been to the beach many times and to the castle also. Covid-19 has been a very hard time for being a scout but I am grateful that we are getting through it and I hope that we will all be able to act as normal again very soon.

Councillors approve €260,000 in grants to community groups in Fingal Councillors voted to approve substantial funding grants of just over €260,000 to 218 community groups and projects in Fingal at the monthly meeting of Fingal County Council on Monday. The grants will support communities in restarting activities and events that had been delayed due to COVID-19.This funding is set to go to groups and projects as follows:Covid-19 Grants: €74,424 granted to 76 groups, Youth Sports Grants: €115,200 granted to 96 groups, Summer Projects: €32,300 granted to 18 projects and Community Activity & Arts Grants: €38,331granted to 28 groups.The money will support specific groups and projects in Fingal communities in responding to the specific challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and will help them to hold events safely.Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. David Healy said after the approval: “It was important that this funding was approved as it provides the necessary supports for many community groups and projects across Fingal that have been hit hard by Covid-19. Teen and Tween working together through Covid

The past few months have been so difficult for all of us and one group who have really struggled are our tween and teens. We decided to give each of our children projects, to give them a sense of control in this unsettling time.For our son, who just started fifth year, a place to study and do homework is important. With 3 sisters to annoy him, his bedroom was the obvious choice. He picked a black grain wood desk and matching wardrobe from lovefurniture.ie. Due to Covid, we had to assemble it ourselves and this took him and his Dad 2 days which was great, because it gave him a sense of achievement when it was finished! Our 15yr old daughter really missed her friends and playing sports. We allowed her a TV and said she could redesign her bedroom, to give her a boost. She went with a mix of Rose Gold 14

metallic paint and pale pink from Murtaghs of Drogheda. For the bed, she wanted a grown-up room. She helped put the bed together and made up her bed with accessories she picked herself. If we do have more restrictions coming, she will have a nice bedroom to be cooped up in! With our two youngest, 8 & 12yrs, we decided to let them loose on the garden furniture! We had some shabby patio furniture that really needed a lick of paint and we said they could pick the colour paint from Arro Balbriggan (who had a brilliant delivery service during lockdown!) and thatâ€™s how we ended up with a Cherry Blossom & Bright Pink table & chairs! They were delighted with the end result and in fairness, it does look a lot better now! Already we are working on the living room and the youngest are heavily involved! It’s Time to ‘Run Your Town’ Fingal County Council’s Sports Office, in partnership with the Fingal Orienteers Club and the Irish Orienteering Association and with support from Sport Ireland through the Dormant Accounts Fund, have organised an innovative orienteering initiative called ‘Run Your Town’.The programme which is open to all will take place from September 23 – 30 and the only requirement is that you own a phone.It involves participants running a short, medium or long course around their town in a specific order using a map which is downloaded onto your phone. While there is a leader board to compare times, the main objective of the project is to introduce people to orienteering and get people active in their community. For this initial phase of the project five towns have been selected; Balbriggan, Castleknock, Lusk, Malahide and Tyrrelstown. It is hoped that should there be sufficient interest more areas around Fingal could be mapped with orienteering courses to allow people the opportunity to try out orienteering in their locality.Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said: “We have all seen the benefits of the involvement in physical activity over the last few months and it’s great to see a project developed as a result of the Covid pandemic. It demonstrates Fingal’s commitment to working within the community to provide important health and wellbeing initiatives in a fun way.”Director of Services, Housing & Community, Margaret Geraghty, said: “The Run Your Town project is a great initiative by Fingal County Council’s Sports Office. The Sports Office has worked hard over the last number of months coming up with new and innovative ways to keep people active and engaged in sport throughout the pandemic.
