Bleeding Pig Festival cancelled for this year The Bleeding Pig cultural Festival today announced that the 2020 Festival, due to run from 10-20 September, will not take place as originally planned this year.Larry Carolan on behalf of the committee and team at The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival, said: ‘“We are so disappointed to announce that The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival, as we know and love it, will not happen in its 8th year this September. The decision follows consultation of the Government’s roadmap for reopening society and business, and ongoing consultation with artists and partners. Henchy welcomes -Green light for “Broadmeadow Greenway” Cllr Adrian Henchy has welcomed the green light for the Broadmeadow Greenway project. He said he was, “very pleased to learn of An Bord Pleanala decision to grant approval for the long awaited and much anticipated “ Broadmeadow Greenway” (Shared footpath and Cyclepath) connecting Donabate to Malahide. On behalf of my local community I had made a detailed submission to this planning application by Fingal County Council back in September 2019 broadly supporting the application. Today’s decision had been expected in March so it’s delay was leading to concerns that a difficulty may have arisen so its a great relief to finally get the planning approval which will allow the project proceed to the construction phase.Thankfully the significant funds for this project have been ring fenced within Fingal County Councils Capital Development Programme2020-2022 which I have been very pleased to support.

This greenway will be a game changer for my local community which is going to bring enormous benefits none more so than encouraging an active lifestyle of walking and cycling. Finally on behalf of my local community to recognise while in the first instance this project will connect Newbridge House & Park to Malahide Castle it is critically important that no time is lost to improve Cycle and footpath infrastructure back into Donabate village, the residential areas of Donabate and onwards to Portrane.

It also means once this leg of the Greenway is completed the next phase connecting Donabate onwards towards Lusk, Rush, Skerries and Balbriggan will be eagerly awaited and I look forward to supporting that. Undoubtably today’s landmark decision is incredibly positive for the peninsula of Donabate/Portrane bringing us closer than ever to our neighbours in Malahide and will also bring enormous benefits to the wider Fingal region. Now the pressure begins to ensure it is a reality and operational in 2022.”

Two Tonnta Cub Scouts raise over €3,000 for Aoife’s Clown Doctors

Two Malahide Cub Scouts Cillian Geraghty aged 10 and Eoin Hendrick aged 9 (and a half ) from Malahide undertook a sponsored 42km cycle (marathon distance! ) on the May Bank Holiday Monday in aid of Aoife’s Clown Doctors. The boys who are great friends and are in 3rd Class in Pope John Pauls National School, Malahide. They are also members of Malahide Sea Scouts and play for St Sylvester’s GAA and Kinsealy Soccer Club but due to COVID-19 situation are currently at home with their families.

In order to comply with the restrictions, they cycled laps within the grounds of Malahide Castle as that’s within 2km of their homes, with their dads in support to ensure they maintained their social distance. Neither of them had ever cycled

42km in one day before - a lot of energy bars were needed...and that was just for the dads!

Thanks to the boys grit and determination and tons of support from their local community, they completed their cycle in just over 3 hours and raised in excess of €2,400 (more than enough for 12 clown rounds!).Aoife’s Clown Doctors is a tribute to Aoife Hendrick who sadly passed away back in August 2012, having just turned 5 years of age. She had only been diagnosed 4 months earlier with leukaemia.In 2014, as part of Aoife’s legacy, Aoife’s parents Áine and Adrian, set up Aoife’s Clown Doctors Ireland - they are professional entertainers who go into the wards of Crumlin and Temple St hospitals in Dublin, Laura Lynn and Galway hospital to bring some

fun and smiles to the children and families there.

They are working to expand the service to other hospitals in Ireland later in 2020.Each clownround costs €200. The funds donated from this cycle will help to continue to provide Clown Doctors for the children and families in these wards. As Áine and Adrian say ‘We know from our own experience of the fun Aoife had with the clowns, how humour can lift the day and bring a smile to even the most sick of children.’Eoin & Cillian would like to thank everyone who supported them on this endeavour - they areblown away by the support they received.

Council Appeal - Take Your Litter Home!

Fingal County Council has appealed to park and beach users to respect social distancing and take their litter home when exercising within a 5km radius of their homes over the Bank Holiday weekend.The Council is alarmed at the dramatic increase this week in littering and dumping at parks and beaches across Fingal as well as the rise in the number of incidents of anti-social behaviour and the disturbance being caused to residents.Fingal County Council’s Director of Operations, David Storey, said: “We are particularly concerned that people are entering our parks after closing time and our park rangers have found significant levels of littering and dumping taking place overnight. Our parks close at 9pm each evening and the Gardaí 6

will have extra night-time patrols to prevent gatherings at night. We work hard to maintain our parks to a high standard but we need people to act responsibly and safely, especially at this time because of the COVID-19 crisis.” Fingal County Council is asking people to:Only exercise within 5km of your home,Only gather in groups of up to four people, Observe the 2 metres social distancing protocol,Find somewhere quieter to exercise if a park, beach or open space is busy, Respect the designated time for cocooners to exercise in parks, which is 1.30pm to 3.30pm each afternoon,Do not dump your litter if a litter bin is full. Casino on Dublin Road Malahide

Once the gem of Malahide, this ‘cottage orné’ was probably the most photographed house in the country, especially when the wonderful display of daffodils enhanced its beauty each year and the two pet donkeys ‘Salt’ and ‘Pepper’ gazed over the front gate as depicted in the photo. Built in the late 17th. Century, a major extension was added in 1837. It remained the property of the Malahide Estate until 1927. During much of the19th century it was obviously available for short term lets as evidenced by the number of birth notices which took the form of “At Casino, Malahide, the lady ( later the wife) of E. Bachelor, Esq. A daughter”. In 1887 it was leased from the Talbots to John Dickie of Castlebellingham, Co. Louth. The related Kirker family took it over in 1923 and in the 1950’s made a portion of the grounds available for the building of the Presbyterian church. The periodical re-thatching was done with rye straw, specially grown on the Dickie farm at Mountgorry at the top of the Broadmeadow estuary. The rye was grown and cut to ensure the stalks were of suitable quality and sufficient length. The Kirker family sold the property in 1999 and in 2007 a large number of apartments were constructed in the surrounding grounds. The Casino itself remained vacant

and uncared for over many years, suffering serious weather damage to walls and roof. An extraordinarily generous bequest by the late Michael Gaffney set the wheels in motion for Fingal County Council to acquire the property and bring the Fry Model Railway Collection back

to Malahide. Major conservation and restoration works were carried out on the Casino itself and the adjoining pavilion was built to house a model railway museum at an overall cost of over €3m. It is again looking resplendent even if the daffodils and ‘Salt’ and ‘Pepper’ are no longer in evidence.

Home schooling with dyslexia is not easy

Home schooling is not easy! It’s difficult trying to stay on top of all the work the children are given and it can be tough when you have more than one child. Our 12 year old also has Dyslexia, which puts adds pressure. She has trouble with reading and spelling, which makes schoolwork difficult for her. Home schooling her can be challenging, as she often gets frustrated with reading and spelling. This makes her feel upset and frustrated and is hard on all of us. We wanted to make home schooling easier for her, to reduce her stress and also, honestly, to reduce our stress too.

The first thing we did was speak with her teacher to explain she was feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work and the difficulty of it. He advised that she aim to do around 70%, to ease the workload for her and to make it more manageable. Straight away, that helped.Next thing we did was introduce a scanning pen into schoolwork. Scanning pens are so brilliant, especially for children with

Dyslexia. Now, when she is reading and comes across a word she does not understand, she rolls the pen over the word on the page of the book, and the pen reads the word aloud to her. It also has a dictionary function, so she can get the meaning of the word too. You can check out the pens at www.scanningpens. co.uk for a 14 day free parent trial.

The most important thing is that your child is healthy and well. They need exercise, play time, activities, good food and plenty of sleep. If they don’t get all the work done that’s ok. Phase 1 Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives. Now, thanks to your patience and sacrifice, we are taking the first steps on a 5-phase reopening of our country.

It is important to be aware of Public Health restrictions and guidance:

Work from home if you can. Bear in mind that most workplaces, especially offices, remain closed.

The 5km limit applies to outdoor exercise, social visits and visits to public amenities.

Social distancing, hygiene measures and coughing and sneezing etiquette must always be observed. Wash your hands regularly.

Outdoor sporting and fitness activities, either individually or in groups of no more than four people, are permitted provided that social distancing can be maintained and there is no physical contact.

Note that the 5km from home restriction applies to all outdoor activity.

Fingal County Council’s Fingal Voices public consultation app is now publicly available.After some months of beta testing, the new mobile application called Fingal Voices is now publicly available on app stores. The app enables Fingal County Council residents to participate in decisionmaking, make their voices heard and engage with their local government in an innovative and fun manner.Residents can access public consultations directly via the smartphone app and will accrue points through their engagement which are convertible for vouchers and gifts at various local retail partners.Users can vote, rate and comment on specific consultations and questionnaires, submit ideas and suggest improvements, and access local and community news and events information.This is an additional service available to Fingal residents and does not replace the existing consultation mechanisms such as the Fingal County Council Consultation Portal.

Fingal County Council’s Arts Office will be the first in Ireland to deliver a coaching support programme for artists and arts organisations on responding to and working within the changed landscape of Covid-19.Fingal County Council Arts Office are extending their ‘Let’s Stay Together’ campaign by offering a specialised one-hour coaching session per individual or organisation to help artists and arts organisations respond to and work within the changed landscape of Covid-19.The programme is in response to the second phase of the Government’s Community Call and the ‘In This Together’ campaign which aims to provide everyone in Ireland with ways and activities to Stay Connected, Stay Active, and take care of their Physical and Mental Wellbeing throughout the Covid-19 emergency.This new initiative is also a response to The Arts Council’s recent Planning for Recovery survey which provides an overview of the impact of Covid-19 on arts organisations and artists. The extensive survey records lost programme activity, audiences and income.

AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, said: “I greatly value Fingal’s creative economy, and Fingal County Council will continue to support artists through this and other initiatives.Throughout the Covid-19 situation, Fingal Arts have already been creating and promoting activities to stay connected and support creatives in the County.“In extending

St Syl’s GAA ‘Run Around The Clock‘ raises €21,000 for Pieta House

These strange times have been hard on many people - not less our elderly & vulnerable but, as the days turn to weeks, those who suffer with depression and anxiety are feeling the Covid effect very badly.With this in mind, Luke Troy, who many will know from our adult men’s football panel, has launched a fantastic idea to support a very worth cause - Pieta House. He encouraged all players, coaches & all members to join him in a collaborative 24 hour run or cycle in Darkness & Light on Saturday evening, 16th May, starting at 6pm. 30 minute slots were assigned to the over 250 runners / cyclists who took part throughout the night until 6pm on Sunday 17th.

At time of writing, Luke had smashed his target of €3000 with a pledge amount of €21,224 raised, 1950 km ran, 596km cycled and 50km walked. Well done to Luke and all concerned.
