A Message from the President of MLTCC Dear Member, I’m writing to you today as the President of your Club in the hope that I can gain your full cooperation in the approach we are taking in managing the Club’s response to the COVID 19 pandemic. I am struggling, as perhaps you are, to cope with the implications for our community in dealing with this terrible disease. The sheer scale and uncertainty posed by the COVID 19 threat is very difficult to grasp but I know that if we do the right things now and through the coming weeks, we will work our way through this crisis. I want to assure you that we have been managing the Club facilities in recent weeks on the basis of advice and guidance from the HSE, Tennis Ireland and other appropriate agencies. This advice allowed our courts to remain in use subject to social distancing and good hygiene practices. The Clubhouse was closed during this period. However, on the 23rd March the Board of Tennis Ireland revised its position and advised its affiliated Clubs that all tennis activities should be suspended until further notice. This restriction applies across the island of Ireland. In effect this means that the Club facilities are in total lockdown mode and members are advised not to seek to gain access under any circumstances. This regime is likely to remain in place for some time and I feelthat certain measures whichmay be announced by Government in the coming days will support this stance. I feel a great deal of sympathy for members whose family, friends or neighbours have suffered COVID19 infection. All I can do is offer our support and best wishes for full recovery to these members of our community. In closing, I ask again for your support and cooperation in implementing these essential measures and we all look forward to the day when we can re open our wonderful facilities for play. Businesses Please Donate PPE for Community Call volunteers Businesses across Fingal are asked to answer the Community Call against Covid-19 by donating Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for use by Community Call volunteers.The Fingal Community Call Forum, in a joint initiative with Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Fingal County Council’s Economic Enterprise and Tourism Development Department, are seeking donations of new and unused PPE for the volunteers who are engaged in carrying out services such as grocery and prescription deliveries to vulnerable citizens and older people who are cocooning. There is a need for face masks, gloves (small, medium and large sizes), face shields, goggles and hand sanitiser. Offers of donations can be placed through the Covid Support telephone numbers of 01-8905000 or 1800 459 059 or by email to covidppe@fingal.ie. Fingal County Council will arrange pick-up of the donations from donors and delivery to Community Call volunteers. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Eoghan O’Brien, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic is a major challenge and the people of Fingal have risen to meet it in many admirable ways. Our volunteers and colleagues active in the Community Call Forum are rendering a sterling service, and they need all the support and protection we can give them.“That’s why we are calling on businesses across Fingal to donate any new or unused PPE equipment if at all possible – we are all in this together, so let’s answer the Community Call,” added the Mayor. The appeal to the county’s businesses comes after Fingal County Council donated 30,000 items of PPE to Beaumount Hospital, loaned two 3D printers to Surfbox for use in PPE production, and donated acetate sheets for face shield production by a volunteer 3D printer. 4

Malahide Yacht Club April 2020 Update Over the past number of weeks you have all experienced unprecedented challenges as the Covid-19 pandemic paid an unwanted visit to our shores. Extensive preparations and time had been committed to our Club in planning for the year ahead. Our younger sailors already on the water in January & February were feeling the cold as they trained and prepared for events in their Optimists, 420’s and Lasers. The racing and training calendar was full and cruises planned both at home and abroad. Our social scene vibrant with a full schedule of speakers arranged.The cancellation of our activities, and the closing of both premises, while difficult at the time,was the right thing to do. I am immensely grateful for your support. While activity may appear to have stopped, that is far from the situation. Our Committee have been working hard to ensure we will be ready to resume activities once we have clearance. We held our April Committee meeting on-line last week. Our finances are in a solid state and we are on target to meet our financial commitments for the year. I sincerely appreciate this commitment. With immense pride we saw Malahide Yacht Club becoming the Irish Sailing Training Centre for the Year 2019. An epic achievement, further testimony of the commitment and hard work of so many in our Club down through the years and one which we will rightlycelebrate in full, but not just yet. You have a Club you can be proud of. For now keep safe,let us not become complacent, your Committee will continue to work on in the background.We will have a new calendar for racing and cruising. We will be launching our coaching, training and fun nights. Our social scene will adapt and we will be ready to take to the waters and enjoy each others company in better times to come. The History of Millview House

Up until 1971 Millview House stood close by the present green area on Millview Road. The sometime home of Andrew Kettle, it was situated in the centre of a ten-acre farm and became the centre of a major land dispute when in 1881, the Land Act set up Land Courts. Andrew Kettle was one of the first to apply for the fixing of a fair rent. He argued that his ten acres was an agricultural holding. The landlord, Lord Talbot, maintained that Millview was a gentleman’s residence and, as such, did not come within the scope of the Land Act. Talbot was so determined to win this pilot case that he engaged two independent valuers, one to access the house and one to access the land. The land valuer was the first to give evidence and when asked what he thought of the house as he passed it from one five acres to the other five behind the house, he, unfortunately commented that he regarded it as a dilapidated old structure. This answer settled the question and the house valuer was never called. Kettle won his case, as an agricultural status was established and a fair rent fixed. The house was named for the view of Feltrim windmill. Kettle was known as Parnell’s right-hand man and Parnell once jokingly told him that if he stuck by him, his name would soon become a household

word. Andrew Kettle is well remembered for his feats of strength. On passing Kinsealy Forge one day he found men unable to move the anvil. He lifted it slowly and surely to shoulder-high with ease himself. While working on ricks of straw on

his farm, he usually transferred the ladder around

the rick while the workman was still on the upper

rungs. His son, Tom Kettle, the poet, was killed at Ginchy on September 9th.1916.

St Sylvester’s GAA Clubs Together for Malahide St Sylvester’s GAA has mobilised a large group of volunteers who are providing huge support in the village and its environs. They have completed dog walks and over 1,000 grocery deliveries after 4 weeks of supporting our local shops Super Valu, Shiel’s Londis and McCabes on Yellow Walls. Since the call for help went out from PRO Elaine Rooney on 15th March, over 80 volunteers came forward and have given their time willingly and without hesitation to keep our community safe. The group are taking direct requests on a dedicated phone line advertised throughout the Malahide area and are taking requests for help from Fingal County Council Community Support also. Walk Bike Fingal: A Plan for Social Distancing in Public Fingal County Council is setting out a new plan, Walk Bike Fingal, to assess and repurpose public road space to facilitate the increase in cyclists and pedestrians currently by giving them extra space to practice social distancing from each other.Fingal County Council is setting out a new plan, Walk Bike Fingal, to assess and repurpose public road space to facilitate the increase in cyclists and pedestrians currently by giving them extra space to practice social distancing from each other.Eight locations across Fingal have been identified including a section of Drogheda Street in Balbriggan under the first phase of the initiative and the works will include physical segregation such as barriers and cones.With this plan, Fingal aims to temporarily provide residents with safe space to walk, run, exercise and travel by bike and adhere to the 2m rule. Fingal seeks to encourage physical activity at a safe social distance thereby improving the physical and mental health of its citizens during this time of restricted movements. Fingal is introducing these temporary measures in consultation with local Gardai. Fingal County Council Operations Department carried out an initial needs assessment to temporarily repurpose Fingal streets, roads and public realm spaces with the current needs of users in mind including those with prams and wheelchairs.During the assessment, it was determined that vehicular traffic on the roads had fallen nearly 50% with a corresponding fall in public transport use by 75% since the commencement of the Covid-19 restrictions.Following an initial assessment, Fingal County Council engineers devised a phased plan for locations in Fingal towns and villages.These locations will have measures put in place to improve the social distancing in the public realm. The measures will be closely monitored by Council engineers and reviewed at intervals as the Government restrictions changes.

Dermot Kennedy & Picture This Cancel Malahide Gig Dermot Kennedy and ‘Picture This’ have axed their planned Malahide Castle summer concert due to the coronavirus pandemic.’Picture This’ were scheduled to play three gigs including Malahide Castle this June, but the ‘Take My Hand’ hitmakers pushed the dates back after the Government announced that the current ban on mass gatherings would be extended until the autumn. The hugely popular band shared a statement today, saying they are rescheduling all dates to next year.They wrote on their Twitter feed : “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to reschedule the summer shows until 2021 Under the advice of the government it’s the safest thing to do right now.Very sorry for any inconvenience but it’s the right thing to do, and we all need to keep safe during these crazy times!” The gig, originally scheduled for Saturday 27th June 2020 has bee rescheduled to Saturday 26th June 2021. All original tickets will remain valid for next year and fans do not need to exchange them.Meanwhile the hugely popular Dermot Kennedy has had to reschedule two Dublin summer shows. His Malahide Castle show, set for on Friday 26th June 2020, has been rescheduled to Friday 25th June 2021. Kennedy said: “Ireland, I’m afraid all our shows for this June are being rescheduled to June next year.All tickets will remain valid. I’m very sorry we don’t get to play these shows this year, but it’s so necessary, as you all know. And it just means we can have an even bigger celebration when the time does come. Thank you for consistently supporting me. I can’t wait to see you all. I love you. Stay safe.” Many of the country’s top festivals and concerts were cancelled or rescheduled recently following the extension of the Government’s ban on mass gatherings.

Malahide Sea Scouts group, in partnership with the Covid-19 Fingal Community Response Forum, has assembled a team of volunteers who are available to support you and our community. If you are a healthcare worker, we are available to help. If you are cocooning, we are available to help. Many of you who grew up in Malahide may have parents still living in the area who would welcome some contact or support from our scout group, we would be delighted to help. We can help with shopping, pick up prescriptions, deliver meals, do DIY, gardening, walk the dog or lift the phone to check in on people. Our volunteers have a broad range of experience and expertise in various fields and are ready and willing to provide any help and support they can. How have your finances changed since COVID-19? By Dave Kavanagh A lot has changed with people’s finances due to the impact of COVID-19. Both income and expenditure look very different for many, as well as an added uncertainty in the weeks and months ahead. So what can you do to be a bit more in control of your finances? Firstly, deal with the “new essentials”. If your income has been reduced, work from the figure you are certain of. List essentials like food, utilities, mortgage etc. It may be that you have availed of a lender’s option to have a payment holiday for a few months. If you are still stretched, you may wish to temporarily freeze contributions to things like saving plans or pensions. Next, prioritise other things that you pay for. Be careful with things like life cover, mortgage protection, serious illness cover etc. If these type of plans were let lapse, there may be difficulty getting them back in place again if your health has changed since commencing (not to mention any impact from COVID-19 on premiums or underwriting. In reverse, if you were considering commencing plans like these, it would be wise to do so sooner, while there is still a degree of certainty.) Fraud - There has been a substantial increase in attempts of fraud, primarily

with “phishing” texts or emails. The most common appear to come from banks, PayPal, Apple Support and even Welfare pretending to give you payment information. Do not click on any hyper links in these messages and pay closer attention to your banking transactions. When shopping, make a list of exactly what you need and stick to it. This can reduce your shopping bill and prevent throwing out food that goes off, as well as reducing the time you need to spend in the shops. Overall, it comes down to making some time to go through your finances to put you in control of them and not them in control of you, therefore reducing anxiety around money.
