Stunning Topiary in my Malahide garden by Colm Hughes Over 40 years ago, preferring, for environmental reasons, a hedge to a wall around our corner garden in Malahide, my wife, Breda and I, planted a row of cypresses leylandii. These trees grow fast,reaching heights of 60 to 70 feet if left unattended. After 15 years or so of working together, we had a 10 foot high, tight, evergreen, blank canvas, hedge.I was interested in Topiary (the Art of clipping trees into shapes) and I had a blank canvas and an idea to cut the number “12” on the front of the hedge. The curves of the 2 proved difficult as I didn’t mark the hedge beforehand, just cut, stand back, look, then cut again until finished. With patience and sharp secateurs “12” eventually appeared. Some time later I decided to shape a Shamrock on the other side of the entrance. It was a challenge to get everything right, cutting and standing back many times before I finished. On the garden-side hedge, over the following years, U2 appeared (they have the Edge, we have the Hedge!) followed by FAILTE. Each with quirks to be overcome. Finally, the one tree left over from planting the hedge and I saw an Easter Island Head in it. It still stands about 10 foot in the back garden, looking benevolently down on us every day. The letters and numbers are each about 7 foot tall and the Shamrock must be 8 foot

square. Fine pieces of living Art.I have not seen anyone do this kind of Topiary. I have received a lot of enthusiasm and encouragement from Breda and our four children and indeed friends, family and neighbours (though maybe some think I’m a

little eccentric!).Topiary is enjoyable, takes time to perfect, but the journey can be very interesting. We at Malahide Local think it is fantastic and wish you continued success with your creations in the future Colm.

Are you interested in tracing your ancestors? By Claire Bradley – local genealogist Genealogy is the second most popular hobby in the world. If you’re wondering how to get started, here are some tips.Speak to the oldest members of your family to discuss what is already known. Maybe use a group wedding photograph to prompt people’s memories. A family gathering is a great time to bring up history and get a conversation going. Assemble any birth, marriage or death certs you already have, along with memorial cards or old letters. Check old photos for names on the back. When you have this done, you’ll be able to draw up a rough sketch of your family tree, hopefully showing your parents, grandparents and maybe some of your great-grandparents, with some dates and places.Figure out who was alive in the key years of 1901 and 1911, then try to find them on the census, which is available for free on www. census.nationalarchives.ie When using this site, remember that people were not precise about spelling or their age in the past (they simply didn’t need to be!) so play around with possible ages and variant spellings of the surname (if your surname can have an O or a Mac but doesn’t now, make sure to try it with as well – people used them interchangeably even in the early 20th century). Another important website is www. irishgenealogy.ie which has historic birth,

death and marriage records. There are some data protection limits in place but there is more than 100 years of coverage. Using this site in conjunction with the census, you should be able to go back another generation or two.If you are local, then the burial records for all of Fingal Co.Co.’s graveyards will be of interest to you on buried.

Our New Year and a new financial outlook By Dave Kavanagh So, March 2020. The time when many “New year, new me” changes may have faded into memory. So many great intentions of life improvements were planned, The reality is, for many, these events occur, whether or not you have planned for them. There are 40,000 new cancer cases diag-nosed in Ireland every year, and yet many still think “it’ll never happen to me”. If any of these type of events would cause a financial loss to you or those dependent on you, making some time to at least establish what options are available, is the least you should consider. There are so many other benefits to reviewing your finances, not least of which, it can leave you with more money! Two of the tips I constantly tell people is to examine 3 months’ bank statements and to do a monthly spending exercise. Going through the bank statements can help identify things that maybe you should no longer be paying for, or

that you are duplicating. Keeping a spending diary for a month will give you a clear picture of detailed outgoings, allowing you to identify spending that you could possibly do more efficiently and permit you to make any changes necessary. The end result of making the time for such an important topic, will not only usually leave you better off financially, but put you more in control of your finances, thereby reducing the stress/anxiety often associated with money. Shakshuka Tasty at Any Time Of Day The fantastic thing about this dish is that the ingredients are so flexible. You could add beans or chickpeas for further protein and fibre or as a vegan option instead of the eggs. Any vegetables can be added and the more variety, the more colourful it will be. Even spices can be added and adjusted to suit individual taste preferences. It’s a great dish to cook in a batch and it’s all in one pan which means less washing up! Ingredients: • • •

1 red onion 2 cloves garlic 2 different coloured peppers

180g spinach 2 tins chopped tomatoes 4 eggs 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp chilli flakes Method:

1. Soften the onion, garlic and spices in a pan for 5minutes. 2. Add chopped peppers and tins of chopped tomatoes. 3. Place the lid on the pan and simmer on medium heat for 20 minutes to reduce the sauce. 4. Make 4 wells in the mixture in the pan

and crack an egg into each. Allow the eggs to cook for 6-8mins depending on how well cooked you like your eggs! 5. Serve up with some nice bread if you like for a satisfying and tasty breakfast, brunch or at any time of the day!
