July is the month when photos move outdoors and Fingal offers many chances to make memories - beaches, parks, festivals and more. It is also the time when photos are ruined by what brought us out to play in the first place - the sunshine. Here’s a few easy tips to get better results this Summer. It seems counter-intuitive but a bright sunny day is often a terrible time to get photos of family and friends. Not only do the conditions force your loved ones to squint into the lens, but the harsh light also creates dark, distracting shadows on their faces. Set your camera or phone to ‘auto-flash’ and check the results frequently. One advantage of bright sunshine is that it lets you take action shots quickly and, hopefully, will freeze the scene in perfect detail. Get in as close as you can - the more you zoom in the more you will experience camera shake. When you are taking photos of your children get down to their level! It works a dream. Remember, digital photography is free so make full use of your ‘Burst’ photo opton - it’s always great to have a choice. And, just because you are snapping away, don’t forgot to make sure you have some protection from the sunshine - there’s nothing quite like sunburn to ruin your day!

Talented Local Students win Texaco Awards Six Fingal students have been presented with top awards in this year’s 63rd Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

Pictured is Eve Aherne (6), from St. Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock, who won second prize in 6-years and under age category of the Competition. Presenting her with the award is James Twohig, Director Ireland Operations of Valero. Other Fingal winners, all of whom received Special Merit Awards at a ceremony held in Dublin recently, were Emmy Aherne (8), from St. Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock; Eva McParland (11), from Pope John Paul II National School, Malahide; and Ava Foran (13), Maya Muldoon (13) and Rahimat Daramala (12), all from Malahide Community School.

Foroige youth club now in Malahide A new Foroige youthclub is now based in Malahide Parish Centre. The club is opens from 8pm to 9.30pm each Friday night for kids aged 12-16. There is a weekly charge of â‚Ź2 and the registration for the year is â‚Ź20. The aim is for the kids to run the club themselves and they have already formed their own committee to learn leadership skills and independence to help guide them to a better future The Foroige youthclub will be working closely with Malahide Tidy Towns in recycling projects in the coming term to get the kids involved in the community.There are also Crafts, Leadership games, Pool, Table Tennis, Air Hockey and a whole lot more. All are welcome

Malahide Has It 2017 A full programme for the 2107 Malahide Has It festival had yet to be confirmed when we went to press but the headline acts on the three days July 28-30 - are Black Bank Folk (Friday night), Paul Harrington (Saturday night), Loose Change (Sunday night). And, on Saturday and Sunday, noon-5pm, on New Street, meet the animals from Maxi Zoo and learn a little about looking after yours.

Things to do this Summer Summer school holidays are here and parents are starting to panic! But don’t worry, there is loads of things you can do to keep the little ones occupied! Pack a picnic and head to Ardgillan Castle for the day. Build sandcastles on the beach. Or bring home seashells, paint them, pop them in a glass jar and hey presto, a gift for Nanny! Inevitably there will be days when it’s raining, so stock up on baking cases & equipment (Dealz, from 1.50) and make cakes to entertain them. If you fancy a day out somewhere different, pack a picnic and check out Airfield Estate in Dundrum or Irish National Stud in Kildare - they are fab to spend a day and there is loads of space for the children to run and play. For a rainy day, the National Aquatic Centre is brilliant and is close to the M50, so easy to get to for family day out or for their sports summer camps. Most cinemas have kids movie mornings starting from €3, ideal for the younger children. If your children are a little older, check out Dublinia or Glasnevin Museum, these are both super for older kids & teens. Redhead set to rock home crowd

Looking forward to playing their part in the upcoming Malahide Has It Festival is a very local band - Redhead. The band was formed five years ago by three lads from Gainsborough, Malahide; Adam Cullen (Lead Guitar/Backing vocals), 9, Dylan Clarke (Vocals/Keyboard) and Davey Cullen (Drums), both aged 7 - a slightly later addition was schoolmate Ben O’Brien (Bass Guitar), 9. The played their first gigs in the class rooms and hall of John Paul National School. Presently collaborating with a young up and coming film producer Arron Lynch Redhead are working on their first music video with their own song “Devils Dream” In 2015 the lads first played in Malahide’s Got Talent and then at ages 10 to 12 performed a set on the main stage at the Malahide Has It Festival.

After the festival the lads were short listed to audition for the Late Late Toy show 2015 and were picked from to perform live on the show they played U2’s ‘Every Breaking Wave.’ In 2016 the lads went on to perform to full houses in the Grand hotel, the Regency Hotel, and opened the Swords Summerfest Festival performing a full one hr set for Fingal County Council, a 1916 commemoration gig and then rocked Malahide at the 2016 Malahide Has It Festival. Same year they went on to perform in Gibneys Pub for the Dublin Rose of Tralee charity fundraiser event playing along side well established acts, they completed the year performing live in the Castle Court Shopping Centre in Belfast at the request of the ITV Entertainment team for the Britain’s Got Talent show.

Now aged 12 to 14 the lads performed live at the 2017 St Patricks’ Day Parades in both Swords and Blanchardstown playing using their design of a walking stage float. Easter Monday saw the lads perform in the all Ireland Cruinniu na Casca culture festival and were the first rock band to play live in the newly restored Swords Castle. This summer also sees 14 year old Kim Whelan playing bass guitar with the band and she is really excited for the July festival to come around. Redhead are so excited and buzzing to be performing again at this years Malahide Has It Festival and are looking forward to having the streets rocking to the sounds of U2, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kings of Leon, Artic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Aslan, Coldplay to name a few. Keeping up with Malahide Cub Scouts

Birds Eye View of the Campsite

The June Bank Holiday weekend saw Malahide Cub Scouts Tonnta pack take part in the mini Jamboree at the National Campsite in Larch Hill in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. This year the theme was “Holidays on the Hill” and over twenty Malahide Cub Scouts rose to the challenge. Setting up Camp on Christmas Sub Camp, the Cubs settled in for a weekend of fun and adventure along with almost one thousand other Cubs from all around the country. While Malahide were on Christmas Sub Camp other cubs were spread out over Easter, Halloween and Summer Sub Camps. The Camp was opened on Friday night when the Cub Scouts and leaders alike were treated to a monster Fireworks display at the opening ceremony. The Chief Scout himself Christy McCann then dropped into their campsite and obliged the cubs with selfies before flying off to other mini Jamborees around the country in Athlone, Cavan and Cork. Over the weekend the Cubs participated in many activities with a holiday theme which involved Building Igloos, Grass Sledging, Water Activities, Scouting Skills and of many other fun events, one of the highlights were the monster Campfire and Disco on the Saturday night. Cub Scout Leader Anna Hickey says that the Malahide Cub Scouts traditionally camp every year on either the May or June Bank Holiday weekends, usually as part of a mini Jamboree. The weather is always a concern she noted, “but we are experienced campers and the high winds and heavy rain showers on Saturday were easily coped with as was the more substantial rain on Sunday night. It really is the old Scout motto of “be prepared”” she added. However when all is said and done the real heroes of the weekend were the Malahide Cub leaders who themselves gave up their Bank holiday Weekend to ensure that he Cubs had a wonderful time and indeed had a great deal of fun themselves. 10

Mega Mangolicious Ice-cream

Method Ingredients • 2 mangos (frozen chopped without skin) • 2 bananas (frozen chopped without skin) • 4 tablespoons vanilla strained/greek style yogurt (Tip: The strained/greek style yogurt has a thick, creamy consistency and is also high in protein) 12

There are many variations for the below recipe but I have kept it nice and simple. It is mega refreshing, smooth, creamy and provides a nice dose of vitamin C, potassium and calcium which in addition to Vitamin D from the sun will help to keep bones and teeth strong and healthy. Tip: Mangos are relatively cheap at the moment. Make sure they are soft as it will make them easier to cut and blitz up! Method to mangoliciousness! 1. Blitz the frozen mango and banana in a powerful blender for a few minutes until it starts to become smooth. 2. Add in the vanilla yogurt spoon by spoon, mixing gently in between and until you achieve a nice soft scoop consistency. 3. Gobble it up or freeze it for later....if you can resist! Parish Centre is World Class Malahide Parish Centre and St. Sylvesters Church was recently declared a world winner in international Friendly and Inclusive Spaces AWards. Sean Harrington - the architect who designed the parish centre entered the centre into the

award organised by the International Union of Architects. The award looks at how a building performs rather than it’s design.and is to do with how successfully a building really works and feels as much for how it looks. Malahide Parish Pastoral centre and St Sylvester’s Church was deemed the world winner in the Existing and Historic Buildings Category. Awards are given in four categories: New Buildings, Public Spaces, Existing & Historic Buildings and Research. Entries are assessed in two stages, first by an international jury located in each of the UIA’s five regions and finally by an international jury including a past award winner. In 2017 a total of 76 entries were received from 28 countries across five continents. The jury was impressed by the range of project types submitted and by the standard and quality of the shortlisted entries. “The Centre’s facilities are welcoming and fully accessible both indoors and outdoors.
