Editor’s Note It May be a sunny month!

The beginning of May is associated with the Celtic festival of Bealtaine. This marked the start of the season of blossoming flowers and fruit trees. It’s good news for the majority of people but for those with a pollen allergy May sees grass pollen counts rise (all the way through to August!). The first Monday of May became a public holiday following the Public Holiday Regulations 1993 Act. The holiday was first observed in 1994. Introduced by Ruairi Quinn, it is thought by many as a day to celebrate Ireland workers but that is not the case officially. Japanese workers, however, have it made - there are four holidays between April 29 and May 5. They call it ‘The Golden Week.’ May marks the start of Summer and the restart of the weather debate with older people recalling the blistering heat of 1959, 1968, 1975 and 1976! Records show that, since 1880, May is the best month for sunshine. While it is impossible to predict accurately what this May is going to be like, the people at Accuweather.com took a stab at it - they reckon we’ll have just one sunny day, 25 cloudy days and 4 days of rain.

Preparing for a great Communion As Summer approaches it all systems go for May , the month that’s all about Communion . So with the house sparkling clean and the garden spruced up its time to put the finishing touches to the Communion Outfits . A quick check list to help!!

Girls;

1. The stunning dress !! Try it on again now and check fit and length with shoes on . 2. Headpiece and/or veil. Decide on the hairstyle and stick to it , make sure you can manage it for the next day or day in school for photos or ask your hairdresser to suggest a simpler style you can do at home. 3. Gloves. 4. Bag, (normally family members give a gift of rosary beads, prayer book etc for her bag) 5. Tights and or socks , tights are better with ballet length dresses, you will definitely use more than one pair. Pop socks are great if the dress is long enough! 6. Shoes , check sizes now. 7. White underwear. 8. Earrings if her ears are pierced , a lovely keepsake if people want pressie ideas just make sure you have them before the day .

Boys;

1. Suit, jacket, trousers (and waistcoats are really popular this year either in suit fabric or contrasting.) 2. Shirt; make sure you try on tie / bow-tie and the collar sits correctly 3. Tie or Bow -tie , you can opt out of having either but make sure there is some detail on the shirt collar opening if you do. 4. Belt , gives the outfit that finishing touch. 5. Shoes , try them now and check trouser length. 6. Underwear. 7. Socks, the item everyone forgets!! Match them to your trouser colour. 8. Medal on Pin/ Rosette , often a gift from Nana or godmother. Make sure if it is that you have it before the day! 9. Pocket square , optional but looks terrific , match it to your tie/bow- tie colour . Don’t forget if you are having a bouncy castle to leave out a basket of spare socks . Black ones!! Don’t forget the camera, batteries, spare memory card and a packet of wet wipes .

Free Services for Self-employed Self-employed people in the North County can now benefit from free dental and optical exams through the Treatment Benefit Scheme for the first time. That’s according to Fine Gael Dublin Fingal TD, Alan Farrell who has welcomed the move by Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar to extend these PRSI benefits to 450,000 self-employed people and their spouses across the State. “The Treatment Benefit Scheme covering free dental and optical exams has been restored to employees, and crucially is now also being extended to self-employed people for the first time ever. “This means that small business owners farmers, tradesmen, freelancers, contractors and professionals in North County can now benefit from this Scheme for the first time. “People who work for themselves and pay PRSI at class S can now get the same regular dental and optical examinations, free of charge, that until now were only available to employees. They can also get a grant for hearing aids of 50% of the cost, to a maximum of €500 per aid, every four years. “Many small business owners in Fingal have spoken to me in the past about the fact that they were not entitled to State

supports, compared with PAYE employees. We all know that successful small businesses are more likely to create jobs, thereby increasing the opportunities for job seekers in our local towns and villages. Supporting the self-employed is good news for the whole community. “I was also pleased to hear Minister Varadkar confirm that more benefits are to come and we will look to further strengthen supports for the self-employed. “This will include the restoration of scale and polish treatment under the dental scheme, and the option of free spectacles or a contribution towards a more expensive pair under the optical scheme. The past division between employees and selfemployed people will be eradicated as from now on, the restoration of benefits such as these will be available to both groups here in the North County. “Minister Varadkar will also make the invalidity pension available to self-employed contributors who cannot work due to long term illness or disability. This will be a really welcome move for self-employed people here in Fingal who, for the first time ever will have that security if they are unable to work.

Young artists win the day Six Fingal students have won top prizes in this year’s 63rd Texaco Children’s Art Competition. In the 6-years and under age category, second prize (€125 Art & Hobby Gift Voucher) went to Eve Aherne, 6, from St. Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock, for her work entitled ‘Fluttering Feathers’. Other winners from Fingal, all of whom will receive a Special Merit Award are Eve’s sister Emmy. 8, also from St. Marnock’s NS; Eva McParland, 11, from Pope John Paul II NS, Malahide; and Ava Foran, 13, Maya Muldoon, 13, and Rahimat Daramala, 12, all from Malahide Community School.

Garda numbers in Fingal have declined by twenty per cent in north county Dublin over the last five years says Darragh O’Brien TD. He has raised the issue with the Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, calling for more Gardai to be assigned. Between 2010 and 2016 the number of Gardai at Malahide decreased from 37 to 31, Swords (84 to 72), Coolock (120 to 105) and Garristown (3 to 2). Lusk (7 to 10) and Balbriggan (68 to 69) showed increases over the same period. “We simply do not have enough Gardai to prevent criminal activity in North Dublin,” says deputy O’Brien. “We need more Gardai assigned to police our community. Other measures such as improved CCTV schemes and establishing community alert groups also have a part to play.”

Mayor of Fingal on the run! The Lord Mayor of Fingal, cllr. Darragh Butler, continued his promise to complete all six Fingal Parkruns last month with the Ardgillan Parkrun. “Despite the hill that everyone had warned me about, Ardgillan really is a great course and a beautiful location with fantastic views,” he says “I would recommend it to all.” 132 runners and walkers turned out on what was probably the best weather of the year so far and Alessandro Porazzini set a new course record of 17:05. “The support I am getting on the courses is fantastic. Whenever I stop for a breather and to walk for a bit, I am getting encouragement to continue and keep going, which is both great and exhausting. This helped me set a personal best at Porterstown and hopefully will push me further on the events to come.” With Donabate, Porterstown and Ardgillan out of the way all that’s left are Malahide, Hartstown and his home turf at River Valley, Swords. Runners, walkers and volunteers are most welcome to all Parkruns - full details are available from parkrun.ie

Back to the water for Malahide Sea Scouts

Splashing about at Malahide Sea Scouts Launch Day.

The long winter of sanding and repairs is over as the Malahide Sea Scouts fleet was launched in early April at the Malahide pier to the delight of all in attendance. A full complement of sail, power, oars and kayaks took to the water accompanied by sun, tide and a gentle breeze - the perfect day to mark the start of the boating season.

Nautical Training Award participants nearing the end of their course took the opportunity to manage the pier and successfully got tons of eager Beavers and Cubs into the RIBs for some spins around the estuary. As the Scouts and Ventures launched their skiffs a prayer was said wishing all crew and all craft a safe season afloat.

Presentations Galore at Scout Group AGM Malahide Sea Scouts were back in their refurbished Scout Den recently for the Group’s Annual General Meeting. The AGM is a celebration of the Groups achievements during the last year and is an opportunity for each of the Programme Sections to remind the parents and friends of the Group of all that they have achieved during the year. As has become the practice in the Group the reports are actually delivered by the young people themselves and are known for their entertainment value. This year was no different and the presentations varied from Video to Song and even Rap. The Chef Scout of Ireland Christy McCann was on hand for some of the formal Presentation of awards and the young members were again to the fore with the presentation of three Chief Scouts Awards to Kate Robinson and Helen Howard, who completed theirs as members of the Cub Sections, and the Scout Cian Butterly who received his Bronze Gaisce award which he completed while doing his Chief Scouts Award.

Local Sports The Chief Scout also Presented Bronze Merit awards to Leaders Alice Foran Geraghty and Chief Scouts commendation of Merit were presented to Brian Colgan, Simon Corvin, Rosin Gorman and Ronan Tobin. Five Year Service awards were presented to Colum McCaffrey, a Ten Year Service Award was presented to Caroline O’Brien and a Twenty Year Service Award was presented to Alan Johns. Addressing the AGM Group Leader Colin Lynch praised the leadership of the Group which now numbers almost two hundred adult volunteers. In particular he praised the team responsible for the Den refurbishment which, while an inconvenience at the time came in on time and under budget. The Chief Scout then addressed the audience and praised the youth members and the leadership team alike on what they have achieved. ‘Bear-illiant’ teddy bear treats

Method Ingredients • • •

40g Rice Krispies cereal 120g Nut butter (eg. peanut, almond, cashew etc) 2 tablespoons linseed (flaxseed) or sesame seeds (or both!) 2 tablespoons natural liquid sweetener eg. Agave/maple/ date syrup or honey

“With the days getting longer and brighter, there are plenty of reasons to get outside and be active while also getting your Vitamin D from the sunshine! A Teddy Bear’s picnic in the back garden, going on a bear hunt or even a treasure trail in a park are all ‘treasure-ific’ ways to get fresh air and be active and healthy!! To decorate:

1.Place rice Krispies and seeds into a bowl. Add the nut butter and natural sweetener and mix well altogether. 2. Divide the mixture into 8, roll with your hands into a ball and squish down a little to make a flat pattie! 3. Cut dark chocolate diagonally at the corners to make triangle shapes for the ears and nose. Cut the prunes in half. Make the mouth shape with one half and cut the other half in half again and roll into small beady eyes!! 4. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes & enjoy as they “Snap, Crackle and Pop” !!!

Noticeboard & Parish News CRIME COMING DOWN : Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, and member of the Oireachtas Justice and Equality Committee, Alan Farrell, says that continued action on crime in local communities across the North County is of the utmost importance. “When we look at crime figures, in comparison to Garda numbers in local stations, we must recognise the gains being made in tackling crime by the hard-working men and women of An Garda Síochána in Dublin Fingal,” he says. “In Malahide, Garda numbers increased by two from 2015 to 2016, and we have seen reductions in 14 of 19 crime categories. In Swords, with Gardaí numbers increasing by

seven between 2015 and 2016, there has also been a reduction in crime statistics in 14 of the 19 categories. According to deputy Farrell there have also been decreases across the board in crime rates in north county Dublin.
