A Season of Family, Community and Christmas Spirit As the winter sets in Fingal, bringing crisp mornings, shorter days and that all too familiar chill, it brings a growing sense of excitement in the air in our towns and villages with preparations for Christmas beginning to take shape! From Swords to Balbriggan; Malahide to Rush, and the many villages in between, Fingal begins to take on a special glow at this time of year. Shop windows sparkle, Christmas lights brighten our streets, and local businesses prepare for the busiest season on the calendar. Community groups, volunteers and local organisations are already working behind the scenes to make the coming weeks memorable for residents of all ages. For many, Christmas means welcoming loved ones home, sharing a meal around the table and creating memories that will last long after the decorations have been packed away. For children, it is a time of wonder and anticipation; for older generations, an opportunity to share traditions and stories that

connect families across the years. Remembering those who may find this season difficult is also of equal importance. Loneliness, financial pressures and the loss of loved ones can make winter a challenging time. A simple phone call, an invitation for a cup of tea or a helping hand to a neighbour can make an enormous difference. The true strength of Fingal lies in its people and their willingness to look out for one another. As Christmas approaches, let us support our local businesses, attend community events and make time for those around us. Whether through volunteering, donating to a local cause or simply offering a warm greeting on a cold morning, every small gesture counts. Winter may bring darkness earlier, but together we can ensure Fingal shines brightly with kindness, generosity and hope. That is the real spirit of Christmas.

Will We Have More Lotto Millionaires? By Dave Kavanagh Well, statistically, the short answer is “Yes” but we know what they say, “there are liars, damn liars and statisticians”. The recent changes that saw the company that runs the Irish National Lottery, reduce your choice of six numbers from 1-47, to 1-45, therefore reducing the chance of winning the jackpot from 1 in 10.7million, back to 1 in 8.1million, which is what it was up to 2015 before they increased the numbers. When the Irish Lotto first started it was 6 numbers from 36 but following a syndicate realising that they could purchase all combinations for less than a million pounds and guarantee a jackpot win, the amount of numbers was increased. In addition to the slightly better odds of winning the jackpot, they have also increased the prize money for winning Lotto Plus 2 from €250,000 to €1million (the same as Lotto Plus 1) so statistically, there is a higher probability that we will see a higher number of people win at least €1million. By comparison, anyone in Ireland that has Serious Illness Cover (AKA Critical Illness cover or Specified Illness Cover) has a 1 in 4 chance of making a claim before they reach the age of 65. Now, 1 in 4 sounds a lot better odds than 1 in 8.1million but human nature being what it is, people don’t want to think about bad things happening to them. They would rather think

of good things happening to them, so they will happily spend their hard-earned money on the Lotto or even Euromillions (which has even higher odds to win the jackpot of 1 in almost 140million) than consider spending some of it on protection type plans, such as serious illness cover. When we see the vast amount of claims paid out by the life companies every year and also the amount of people diagnosed with illnesses that are covered, the real gamble is not having cover in place.

Drought tolerant plants for Irish Gardens

By Elaine Staveley Can you recommend plants that will do well in hot, dry Irish summer, like the one we just had? Anne, Malahide Yes, a lot of plants suffered this past summer in the heat and drought. And now is good is a good time to plant for next summer as the plants will have time to settle in. The good news is that there are plenty of beautiful plants that can cope with dry conditions, once established. These plants will cope with rain too. Yarrow (Achillea) is a classic drought-tolerant perennial with flat flowerheads. It thrives in full sun and free-draining soil and works particularly well in naturalistic or prairie-style planting. It comes in a variety of colours, including white, pink and yellow. Golden Marguerite (Anthemis tinctoria) has ferny foliage and daisy-like bright yellow flowers from June to October. It performs particularly well in poor, dry soil. It self-seeds quite easily, so cut it back to about 2cm after flowering to prevent this. Smoke Bush (Cotinus coggygria) is a useful drought-tolerant shrub, with airy flowers which resemble puffs of smoke and a gorgeous wine foliage colour. It prefers sun and free-draining soil. Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is a fantastic

10

MALAHIDE LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2026

choice for all gardens, providing reliable long-lasting vibrant purple flowers. And bees love it too! Sedum is another plant which does well in dry weather as its succulent leaves store water, meaning it can last longer in drought. Verbena bonariensis is another plant which has become more popular in recent years and will offer you really long flowering periods in dry weather. It self-seeds a little, but not so much to be a problem. I would also consider creating areas of shade in your garden by planting trees and shrubs. And try and improve your soil health over time, by addin mulches (eg bark chips or your garden compost). Finally, remember that droughttolerant doesn’t mean droughtproof. Planting in autumn, or early spring gives plants time to establish their roots before the next dry summer arrives. So get planting now! Have a question on plant selection? If you are not sure what to plant in a particular spot in your garden, send your question to ask@plantplanner.ie and it could be answered in a future edition of Malahide Local. Clayface (2026): A Flesh-Stretching Ride Through Gotham’s Underbelly

By Jack Shanley Comic book cinema takes a sharp, bloody turn into full-throttle body horror with DC Studios’ Clayface, directed by James Watkins (The Woman in Black). Written by horror veteran Mike Flanagan, the film completely strips away traditional superhero tropes, delivering a gritty, standalone origin story that leans heavily into visceral gore and B-movie thrills rather than glossy spectacle. The story focuses on Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), a vain ambitious actor driven on the brink of a big break in his career. Following a tragic exposure to a volatile experimental compound, Hagen’s body begins to mutate, breaking down his flesh. Rather than seeking a cure, Hagen uses his grotesque new ability to morph his appearance to inflict revenge on those who wronged him in Hollywood and Gotham’s dark underworld. Naomi Ackie co-stars as Caitlyn, a scientist whose complex role in Hagen’s transformation echoes classic Frankenstein themes, though the narrative occasionally leaves her underutilized. What makes Clayface stand out from the crowded superhero genre is its refusal to rely on standard franchise formulas. There are no Batman cameos, nod-to-the-camera universe setups, or mid-credits teasers. Instead, Watkins orchestrates a dark, atmospheric thrill ride that relies heavily on practical makeup effects and skin-crawling transformations reminiscent of 1980s horror classics. Harries gives a committed, unhinged performance, capturing both the tragic desperation and the narcissistic malice of a man losing his humanity piece by piece. However, the film isn’t without its flaws. The pacing stumbles from time to time throughout the film. Hagen’s moral descent can make it difficult to root for him as a protagonist but there could be no in some way an argument for him being a character study. When the movie leans into its squeamish, practical-effects-heavy horror—in a chaotic final act—it achieves an incredibly gruesome identity of its own Clayface overall may be too stomach-churning for the average casual viewer seeking a lighthearted comic book adventure, but for genre fans looking for a dark, gruesome and unapologetic horror movie, it offers a refreshingly nasty night at the cinema. In all truth I’d recommend checking out ‘Clayface’ and see what you think of it, I shall give it a score of Three ½ stars. You can watch it at your local cinema today. Director: James Watkins – Rating: 16 – Genre: Horror/Action – Run Time: 1h 48m - Language: English. For more film content please follow @screen_.addicts on Instagram. CAR REVIEW Fully-Electric Mercedes-Benz GLC Powers Up. By Declan Glynn

The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric brings together the latest technology, safety and design thinking, while offering buyers a choice, as the current combustion-powered GLC remains available alongside the new all-electric model. Dedicated EV Architecture. The new GLC Electric may share a name with the existing GLC SUV and have a somewhat similar appearance, but the GLC Electric is based on the same new, dedicated EV architecture as the latest C-Class Electric. Shared technology includes an 800-volt electrical system for ultrarapid charging capability, with a 10% - 80% charge possible in 22 minutes and, according to Mercedes-Benz, the capacity to add over 300km range in around 10 minutes. Distinctive Exterior. The new GLC Electric offers a distinctive presence with its signature EQ front design – featuring the iconic Mercedes-Benz grille, optionally illuminated to create a captivating 12

MALAHIDE LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2026

glow around the panel and star. The grille is especially eye-catching at night, with animations when opening and closing the vehicle. The GLC Electric’s sculpted wheel arches and LED tail lights - in the unmistakable star design - give the 5-seat SUV a confident and modern identity. MBUX Hyperscreen. The most eye-catching highlight in the new GLC Electric’s cabin is the new MBUX Hyperscreen – a seamless 56-inch continuous curved glass surface spanning the entire width of the dashboard. The Hyperscreen combines three screens in one – a 12.3-inch driver instrument cluster, a large 17.7-inch central OLED touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display. An expansive fixed panoramic roof maximises headroom and fills the cabin with natural light, offering a spacious, airy feel. Car on Review. My Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Avantgarde Plus review car looked amazing in its Plain Black solid paintwork (a no-cost

option), and upgraded 20-inch 5-spoke light-alloy wheels. The GLC 400 4MATIC comes with two electric motors – one at each axle – for all-wheel drivability, while a large 94kWh battery delivers a WLTP range of up to 664km. The dual electric motors produce 483bhp and a substantial 800Nm of instant torque, delivering a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.3-seconds. The standard 2-speed automatic transmission offers a shorter ratio for spirited acceleration and a longer ratio for cruising efficiency, providing a meaningful real-world advantage over rivals relying on fixed-ratio single-speed systems. The car is supremely refined, even at motorway speeds, and its highly comfortable ride quality and effortless performance are qualities that provide a sense of occasion on every journey. It is, in one word, exceptional. Price. Pricing starts from €72,085 for the GLC 250, with my review car specification priced from €79,615.
