Editor’s Note

Phew, we survived the national emergency that was ex-Hurricane Ophelia - even if (from a Fingal point of view) it seemed like a dry run for the real thing. For the record the county council dealt with a total of 60 calls on the day - mostly involving fallen trees.

Speaking of which, and to show how bad things can get, a February 1903 storm devastated parts of Dublin with over 2,900 trees blown down in the Phoenix Park alone.

And, in 1839, the ‘Night of the Big Wind saw a quarter of the houses in Dublin destroyed and 42 ships sunk. Hundreds of Dubs huddled under the portico of the Bank of Ireland, College Green, in the belief that it was one of the few buildings that would survive. Memo to self: check out County Hall, Swords ... you never know!

November is definitely going to be an anti-climax ... a lull before the storm that is Christmas. It’s time to put a family plan into place to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the day - no presents still in the post, chimney checked to see if Santa can make it down (and an excuse prepared if you don’t have a fireplace!), all rellies sent suitable cards, get first dibs on the TV remote (a man can dream), and don’t forget the batteries!

LUSK TIDY TOWNS Congratulations to Lusk Tidy Towns committee on their recent win in the National Tidy Towns competition held recently in the Helix Centre.

Lusk Village won the Bronze medal for Dublin and Fingal being placed 3rd and points going up by 8.

Congratulations to everyone who got involved in helping Lusk by picking up litter, putting out flowers, painting and generally giving a hand in keeping Lusk presented well.

The annual Christmas Card and Calendar Sale will take place in November in The Top Shop.

Our Journey To End Poverty Day

It was Tuesday morning after storm Ophelia and even though every school in the country was closed, the dedicated Rush and Lusk Educate Together N.S. Green School representatives were at the Rush and Lusk train station ready to do our bit to end poverty!

We bought our tickets and got on the train.

Our train took us to Tara Street. Once we reached our destination we started to wander out of the train station towards the poverty stone. On the way we saw the Customs House and stopped to take a few pictures. Then we soon reached the poverty stone to join the other nine groups from Dublin City Centre.

We all gathered around the stone and sat down. We were all there to celebrate UN (United Nations) End Poverty Day. Before it started we were all called over to colour a paper Stop Poverty hand each and we got a special

t-shirt to help spread the word about End Poverty Day. After finishing our masterpieces we sat down again and the ceremony began. There were a lot of speeches made, including one by the Lord Mayor of Dublin. He spoke about poverty in Ireland and how we all need to work together to combat it. He was delighted that so many people made it there despite the storm. There were many other speeches.

Lucy Walsh (me) and James Robertson from R.a.L.E.T. N.S. spoke on behalf of the schools that could not make it, while Shaun Dunne and Hailey Lombard introduced our Boat of Hope to the audience. Soon after the speeches we released all of the Boats of Hope, sending out our wishes to end poverty by 2030. The sail of our boat was a patchwork of different squares of material designed by each class. The

R.a.L.E.T. boat quickly started picking up pace before surprisingly taking a sharp left down the canal, never to be seen again! We all said our last goodbyes, and watched the boats slowly drifting away.

Later we returned to our seats and sang along to the song ‘Something inside So Strong’. All the TV cameras were pointing at the small stage where the little group of people stood singing the song. Soon after we shared some cake and sandwiches that were generously offered and we had a well-deserved hot chocolate. Before heading home, we had a quick trip up the river to see the famine ship the Jeanie Johnston.

We were all wrecked after a long, exciting day and soon returned back home with a smile on our faces.

New Lusk Park and Recreational Hub

Members of the Lusk 2020 group who met recently with Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid, Councillor Ken Farrell and staff from the Operations and Strategic Infrastructure & Planning departments to discuss proposals for the first phase of the new public park at Rathmore.

Work has begun on the first phase of a major new public park in Lusk which will see a programme of improvements being carried out to existing sports facilities.

Fingal County Council recently took four hectares of parkland at Rathmore, Lusk, into public ownership and this land is the first section of a major new public park for the area. Further

sections will be added as part of the open space provision for future residential development in Lusk.

The Council had been pursuing the legal transfer of the land for several years and is now able to commence the improvement work which will bring the area into use for more local residents and local sports clubs.

Councillor Ken Farrell and local clubs, under the Lusk 2020 umbrella, have been campaigning for the provision of sports facilities in this fastgrowing area. In the run-up to the land coming into public ownership, the Lusk 2020 group produced a plan for the site and the adjoining open spaced zoned land. This plan has been used to inform the Council’s approach to the future development of the site.

The works which are currently underway will see the playing surfaces of three existing sports pitches being upgraded and these pitches, which include a full-sized GAA pitch and two sevena-side soccer pitches, will be allocated for use in early 2018.

A 900 x 3 metre jogging track and a 100 metres sprint track are also being developed to service the needs of local athletics groups and to provide for informal exercise and training.

It is also planned to provide a public playground on the site during 2018. The adjoining Lusk Community College and Lusk Educate Together Schools will have direct access to the parkland.

Fingal CEO Paul Reid welcomed the start of works at Rathmore which will cost in the region of €300,000. He said: “We are delighted to have these lands in charge and look forward to providing much needed and high quality recreational facilities for the residents of Lusk.”

Funds sought for growers Autism Info Seminar

Senator James Reilly has called for a special fund to assist Horticultural Growers - especially those in North County Dublin.

Fingal is Ireland’s primary horticultural region, producing over 50% of the national vegetable output and 75% of all glasshouse crops grown in the country.

“Many food growers cannot access Insurance for glasshouses and poly tunnels, so I am calling on the Government to step and arrange funding via the EU Solidarity Fund mechanism for natural disasters to assist these growers in repairing damage after recent storms,” he said.

The EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF) was set up in 2002 to respond to natural disasters including storms in EU Member States. It has been used for 76 disasters across Europe since then.

Friends of Autism/ADHD have organised an Information Seminar on the new Special Educational Needs model. The Seminar will be hosted by Ms Marianne Henry, Principal of Scoil Sinead - Pelletstown.

Topics to be covered include: the new model; Reasoning and purpose; School profiles - what are they and how they impact; Standardised Test Results - how they are to be used; Social Context impacts; Enrolments of SEN children; Role of Clinical Assessments; NCSE advice to schools; Baseline supports; How schools are now to identify pupils for Support; Role of Teacher and additional supports; Parental involvement; Student support.

Fingal Heritage Plan 2018 -2023

Fingal County Council is preparing the Fingal Heritage Plan 2018 -2023, a strategy to protect, manage and promote our heritage. As part of the process, we want to hear from people and organisations with an interest in Fingal’s heritage.

Fingal Remembers

Towns and villages in Fingal are set to benefit from € 252,000 in Government funding, according to Fine Gael Senator James Reilly.

Senator Reilly said the 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, which was launched in April this year, will focus on projects that will enhance and develop our local areas.

“The Town and Village Renewal Scheme works towards rejuvenating and revitalising rural Ireland and should have a significant impact on towns and villages across the country.

“Here in Fingal we have placed a particular emphasis this year on projects which have the capacity to support the economic development of rural town and villages as well as their neighbouring townlands.

“The scheme will also support improvements to public amenities in our town and village centres, to help make them more attractive places in which to live and work and to visit.

“I particularly welcome the grant of €100,000 for Balrothery Children’s Theme Park for the hard working ambitious Balrothery Community Association , Naul €76,000 Sculpture and Culture Park Portmarnock €24,000, Village enhancements, Meakstown €52,000 Community Infrastructure “Most of the funding will benefit towns and villages, with populations of less than 5,000 people,” he said

Local Republicans gathered at the new 1916 to hear Rush man James Cowzer read Ashes’ poem ‘Let me carry your cross’, Neasa Ní Bhriain spoke as Gaeilge about Thomas Ashes socialist views and relationships with Connolly and Larkin, Seán de Faoite gave an oration. Cuimhníonn Fine Gall also erected placards around the village to mark the centenary.

Originally from Portmarnock from a family of three girls and one long suffering brother, home is where my love of fashion began. My mum was a very talented seamstress, I would watch my mum for hours making beautiful pieces from eye, cutting and making garments with utter precision. I was fortunate enough to go onto study fashion and design in the prestigious Grafton Academy, and make my childhood dream of becoming a designer a reality. I have been very fortunate to have spent the past 17 years working in design in the Irish fashion industry, were I got to travel extensively, it was through this travel that I was exposed to the high standards in design and quality in European childrens wear. Fingal Local Community Development Committee approves funding

The Fingal Local Community Development Committee.

The Fingal Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) approved Community Facilities Funding of €64,500 to 58 community groups.

The vast majority of grants approved by the Fingal LCDC were for €1,000 with a limited number receiving €2,500 including three Men’s Sheds from Swords, Balbriggan and Portmarnock; Balbriggan Youth Service and Mountview Family Resource Centre.

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Mary McCamley, praised the scheme and added: “I am delighted to see this level of funding being given to such a diverse selection of community groups. From Mens’ Sheds to Youth Centres, the funding will contribute to benefiting Fingal citizens of all ages and backgrounds. The voluntary community groups and the volunteers who run them do tremendous work across the county and their work is much appreciated.”

The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “The list of groups being funded shows the diversity that exists within our communities and highlights the fantastic work they do to positively contribute to their communities.”

The Capital Grants scheme was launched in March by the Minister of State for Communities and the National Drugs Strategy, Catherine Byrne TD, who said at the time: “By making funding available through programmes like this, the Government is showing its belief in the value of communities, the importance of voluntary community groups and the hard work of their volunteers throughout the country.”

The Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government (now the Department of Rural and Community Development) allocated €2 million overall for this Scheme. The funding is to be used for small scale capital expenditure to help grass roots community groups to get projects underway or take the next step towards completion. The initial scheme is running from June to December 2017.

The Scheme is administered by the Local Community Development Committees (LCDC) under the remit of the Local Authorities such as Fingal County Council.

Dr. Pat O’Connor, Chair of Fingal LCDC, said: “The funding will help community groups complete small scale capital expenditure projects which will enhance communities further, address disadvantage and improve social cohesion at a local level.”

Projects which have been approved for funding are closely aligned with strategic objectives and actions from the Local Economic and Community Plan 2016-2021.

The scheme, which is set to be repeated in 2018, was heavily oversubscribed with 125 applications in total from all aspects of community development.

The Fingal LCDC consists of 19 members and includes three councillors among a broad representation of public and private interests including the business, local development, education, enterprise, agriculture, voluntary sectors.

Thomas Ashe takes centre stage in Lusk The 100th Anniversary of the death of Thomas Ashe was commemorated in Lusk at the end of Setpember. Among those attending were members of the Ashe family from Kildare and Kerry.

Events began at Corduff N.S. where Thomas Ashe taught and was headmaster. The Army 5th Battallion performed a drill followed by a lament to the fallen hero by Declan Costello.

The Principal of Corduff N.S., Anna McKeown, was presented with a wreath by Stephen O’Connell, Lusk GAA Chairman. Aine Gaffney from the Black Raven Pipe Band finished the proceedings at the school with a tun.

After a march, headed by Sliabh na mBan (Michael Collin’s armoured car), to Thomas Ashe Park, there was a series of Academy and Juvenile team of hurling, camogie and football.

The Power Drama Group performed the “Life and Legacy of Thomas Ashe” to a large crowd.

The main event of the day was the unveiling of Paul D’Arcy’s ‘Thomas Ashe Sculpture.’ After speeches by Mary McCauley, Fingal Lord Mayor, Eileen Quinn (niece of Thomas Ashe), Paul D’Arcy and Eamon O’Cuiv TD, the sculpture was unveiled.

Afterward there were historial talks in Round Tower and the local films ‘Fingal Finest’ and Lusk Heritage’s ‘Inquest of Thomas Ashe’ were screened.

The day finished off with traditional music in the bar, a pop-up Gaeltacht, and music from Derek Jordan’s ‘Totally 80’s Band.’

There is a commemoration booklet on sale to make the event - it can be purchased at Lusk Post Office.

Lusk Community College News Lusk CC Leadership Lusk Community College held a Leadership Ceremony last month to officially congratulate successes from last year in addition to introducing our new Student Leadership Team.

Awards were presented to Jazmin Bentley for best Junior Certificate results and Eabha Kelly was awarded personal best in Junior Certificate. Yana Corr was presented with her Gaisce Bronze medal. Chloe O’Connor and Chloe Peters were presented awards for their Leaving Certificate Applied results and Niamh Rafferty was recognised for her finalist place in the Richard Burke National TY Student of the Year nomination.

Leaders in the field of Sports, Press and Arts were introduced by Lusk CC Head Boy Mohamed Ali and Head Girl Chloe Peters. House Captains were introduced by Rafael Kramer along with Student Council leaders and TY mentors to First Years. The new Student Leadership Team is wishing all students a successful and enriching experience for the coming academic year.

Latest Lusk Athletics Club news EOI Lusk Race

There was a very large Lusk AC turnout for the recent EOI races in Lusk and the Baldungan route was awash with Blue and White singlets amongst a record entry. We had participants in the 10k, Half Marathon and 20 mile races with the bulk entering the latter. There were some great performances on what was a windy morning and most athletes were right on track for a successful Dublin Marathon.

Dublin Half Marathon

Lusk welcomed the Dublin Half Marathon to her village on Saturday 23rd September with thousands of runners passing through the streets.

Lusk AC had almost 60 members competing on this challenging course. Each and everyone of you were amazing. We had 40 volunteers from the club on the route guiding and assisting. We’d like to say thank you to them.

Our juvenile section of the club outdid themselves with support and encouragement while handing out refreshments to passing runners - well done guys.

Lastly we’d like to congratulate the people of Lusk for coming out and supporting, cheering, waving and welcoming the 9000 runners through our beautiful country side. You made us very proud.

First Juvenile Cross Country League Congratulations to all athletes who competed in the first Cross Country League in the beautiful setting of Ardgillan recently. Thankfully it turned out to be a lovely morning. For many of our younger juveniles it was their first time taking part in competition. Well done to them all.

Not only did Lusk AC have Ironmen competing at the Irecent Ironman event in Barcelona; there were also IronKids!

Fabulous Festive Mincemeat Ingredients

• 100g raisins • 100g sultanas • 100g currants • 100g dried apricots, chopped up into small pieces • 2 apples, remove skin, core & chop up • Juice of 2 oranges • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon cloves

Method It can be quite nutritious with the range of dried fruits loaded with fibre which helps to keep our bowels moving during all the meals and munching over Christmas. Some dark coloured dried fruits such as raisins, sultanas and currants provide a nice supply of iron for our energy levels over the holiday season while dried fruits such as oranges, figs and apricots provide useful amounts of calcium to help keep our bones and teeth strong during frosty weather. Dried and fresh fruit can also be high in Vitamin C to ward off colds, flu and infections so that we can enjoy the festive season in full might! See ideas below for alternative ways to use mincemeat.

1. Soak the dried fruits (not apple) in the lemon and orange juices and all of the spices overnight.

2. Add the chopped apple and gently cook the mixture in a pot on a low heat on the hob for 35 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Allow to cool then fill sterile empty glass jars or containers with the mixture.

4. Store in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.

Use it.....

1. with natural yogurt, pumpkin seeds and oats toasted in the oven 2. spread onto oatcakes/rice cakes on top of a layer of a nut butter 3. mix into a dough to make festive feeling scones or banana bread 4. add it when making a fruit pie/crumble 5. stuff baked pears/apples with it 6. make mincemeat muffins or cookies 7. add nuts and apple to make Strudel 8. use in the centre of a steamed pudding instead of jam 9. make mincemeat teacake AND OF COURSE the obvious.....make mince pies!
