Editor’s Note

October sees yet another Budget in which the Government reminds us that we have never had it so good while dripping deeper into our pockets. And, of course, you can’t compare Irish taxation with anywhere else because, as is pointed out in Dáil Éireann on a regular bases, Ireland is different!

It’s a difference that becomes harder to explain as our towns and buildings become ever more identical with anywhere else in Europe. When national identity is reduced to marketing concepts of the “Ancient East” and the nonsensical “Wild Atlantic Way.” And when our taxation regime is actually basically the same as many other countries.

In reality, people are people the world over and political incompetence is a feature of most democracies.

But, when it comes to elections we get to chose who runs the country, not what they will do when they get into power. We don’t get a vote on taxation and even though the Water Charges fiasco has proved there are limits it is a fact that new areas of taxation are constantly being explored.

As the nights draw in and the weather gets worse in the lead into Winter at least we can draw comfort from the fact that taxation will continue to provide an endless topic of conversation.

On the bright side we have the October Bank Holiday weekend to look forward to at the end of the month. Enjoy it because it’s the last one before Christmas!

Celebrate National Potato Day with Spuds and Family Fun! Country Crest and Keoghs are hosting ‘Spud Fest’, a free family fun day at Newbridge House.

The free, family fun day is being hosted by local farming businesses, Country Crest and Keoghs Farm, in celebration of Ireland’s greatest staple food – the potato!

Some of the exciting activities on the day will include potato sack racing, tug-o-war, face painting, bouncy castles, arts & crafts, traditional lawn games, vintage tractors, music and more.

Guests will especially enjoy the farm-fresh food fare being provided by the event sponsors, with lots of delicious spud-based meals and crisps being served.

A big thank you to Fingal County Council for helping to fund this event.

Thomas Ashe FF event

Thomas Ashe Bookmarked!

Lusk Community Council distributed over 5,000 bookmarks to all students in the parish of Lusk as well as 11 secondary schools in Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Donabate and Swords, to mark the Centenary of the death of Thomas Ashe on 25th September.

Ashe was a teacher who became the Principal of Corduff National School in 1908. He went on to become a leader in the community, in Fingal and nationally.

Council issues plea to motorists after incidents with school traffic wardens Fingal County Council has issued a plea to motorists to slow down in the vicinity of schools after two incidents involving school traffic wardens in the first week since schools reopened after the summer break.

In one incident a school traffic warden was verbally abused by an irate motorist when asked the move their car which had been parked illegally in the vicinity of a school crossing. The car’s wing mirror then struck the warden as it was being driven off. The Gardai were informed of the incident.

In the second incident a car drove through a school crossing in Swords, seconds after a group of children had crossed the road, and narrowly missed hitting the school traffic warden who was in the process of returning to the pavement. This incident has also been reported to the Gardai.

Niamh Russell, Road Safety Promotions Officer with Fingal County Council, said: “We are appealing to motorists to slow down in the vicinity of schools and to obey the instructions of our school traffic wardens. The wardens are fulfilling an important role in ensuring that children can cross the roads safely. The two incidents are extremely worrying and we urge motorists to start obeying the rules of the road, otherwise we could end up dealing with even more serious incidents.”

Councillor Darragh Butler noted that he gets lot of calls about schools and parking this time of year. “Please can everyone be considerate to other road users, do not block paths and driveways and if possible, walk to the school. Above all, please respect our school traffic wardens, follow school instructions and stay safe. If your journey to work goes past a school, please allow extra time and go another way around if possible. We need to keep our children safe.”

Wooly Farm Halloween Event It’s that time of year again, Ghosts, Dolls, and ghouls alike, have descended onto Wooly Farm for Halloween. Lusk Hub promoted A Lusk2020 Sports Committee delegation and Councillor Ken Farrell met with Paul Reid, CEO of Fingal County Council and his management team to discuss the future development of the Lusk Recreational Hub recently.

The meeting was set up following several months of the Lusk Recreational Hub being highlighted at Council meetings when it was listed as one of several key strategic priorities for the Council, covering the period 2017 – 2019 which will coincide with the mid Development Review in 2020.

The ‘Lusk Recreational Hub’ meeting obtained a commitment from Council officials to provide an action plan over the coming weeks for the ongoing development of the Hub, i.e. details of works required over the coming months including timelines of delivery.

Key actions targeted before the year’s end include; installation of knee high railing around car park area, installation of perimeter dust path and pedestrian access from the recreational hub into the adjacent schools.

Lusk Community College News Lusk CC Junior Cert Results Lusk Community College (pictured) students received excellent Junior Cert results.

Principal Orla Forde and Deputy principal Aisling Kirwan congratulated the teachers and students on the brilliant results.

They also want to acknowledge the support that the parents give to their own sons and daughters and to the school.

Bonding at Causey Farm Lusk community college first years recently had their bonding trip to Causey Farm, Navan.

Causey Farm is a fun based venue for a variety of entertainment, tourism and educational programs.

There is a ‘Hands-On’ focus, with visitors getting to dance a jig, play the bodhrán, cut turf in a bog, bake brown soda bread, see a sheepdog at work, bog diving WE NEED YOU and more!

Transition to the Top!

Lusk Community College Transition Year Student of the Year Niamh Rafferty was one of the eight finalistin the inaugural Richard Burke TY Personified Award.

The award aims to identify the student in Ireland who best represents the Mission and Aims of Transition Year and who has been proactive in fulfilling their own potential.

Niamh fully embraced transition year, she took part in many work experiences, including the Royal College of Surgeons and Cooke Academy. She also took part in many competitions, AIB Build a Bank, SCI fest, Student Enterprise, Young Social Innovators.

Niamh was a volunteer within the school community, mentoring first year students, and the wider community with Gealschool and visiting Lusk Community Unit every Friday. She received an overall Distinction and obtained her Gaisce Bronze medal.

Ashe Centenary Celebrated

The Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society 1916-1921, held their annual commemoration at Rath Cross, Ashbourne recently. This year marks the hundred anniversary of the death of the Fingal Volunteer Leader Thomas Ashe who died on the 25th September 1917 while on hunger strike.

The commemoration commenced with the Fingal Volunteer’s Colour and Parade Party and Black Raven Pipe Band marching to Church of the Immaculate Conception, Frederick Street, Ashbourne, for Mass, with bugler Sid Kearns sounding the Royal Salute, at the moment of the consecration.

Following mass the Parade Party of “uniformed and armed” Volunteer re-enactors and The Black Raven Pipe Band marched to the adjacent Rath Cross Monument where proceedings were introduced by the Chair of the Society Noel McAllister, whose three uncles and four of their cousins fought and secured victory, at this site, under the command of Kerry native Commandant Ashe on the Friday of Easter Week.

A wreath was laid in memory of Thomas Ashe and his volunteers by his grandnephew Padraic Ashe on the Monument. The design of the Monument was inspired by Thomas Ashe’s Poem

The keynote address was delivered by Minister Regina Doherty T.D. The minister represents the constituency of Meath East in which Ashbourne is located.

A pipers lament was played in memory of Thomas Ashe, followed by the sounding of the Last Post followed, the raising of the Tricolour and the playing of the Reveille.

The Black Raven Pipe Band which was founded by Thomas Ashe in 1910, played the National Anthem to conclude proceedings.

Local Property Tax cut by 10% The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, has welcomed the decision of councillors to reduce the 2018 Local Property Tax by 10 per cent.

Councillors have the option each year to make an adjustment in the Local Property Tax of up to 15 per cent but they voted by 20 votes to 17 to accept a Labour Party motion to impose a 10 per cent reduction.

“I welcome the decision of the elected members to impose a 10 per cent reduction as this will generate €1.9m which will be ring-fenced for local services, housing and homeless supports,” said Mr Reid.

“If Councillors had voted to take the full 15 per cent reduction we would have had to cut services in order to balance our budget. There have been detailed engagements over the past few weeks and months with the Corporate Policy Group and the various political parties and groupings in which the Council’s Management Team set out some of the very real upward pressures on our costs in providing services to a growing county like Fingal.

“We are the fastest growing Local Authority in the country with a population growth rate of eight per cent which is twice the national average. We also have the youngest population across the country with growth levels of 20 per cent in school-going children.

“Fingal is strategically important to the continued growth of both the National and Dublin economies and our councillors have shown with this decision that they are prepared to put the interests of the county first which is in keeping with the leadership they have shown in other areas such as the recently approved development plan and our response to the housing crisis,” said Mr Reid.

Donabate development raising local concerns At September’s Fingal County Council’s Balbriggan/Swords local area meeting, a group of councillors submitted an emergency motion calling on the Council’s Chief Executive to meet with the newly formed Supporting Proper Development in Donabate (SPDD) campaign group as a matter of urgency to discuss planning concerns. The emergency motion was ruled out of order and will be submitted again at this month’s meeting.

That motion followed a mass meeting in Donabate Parish Hall where a large crowd met to express their concerns about planning and development issues in Donabate. The meeting heard that the campaign’s “purpose is to ensure that proper sustainable development is carried out in line with the Local Area Plan for Donabate, and that these principles of development, phasing, infrastructure and proper consultation apply to all other developments on the peninsula as agreed between the community and the county council.”

The councillors who attended committed to fighting on behalf of the community and ensuring the authorities pay heed to the residents’ pressing concerns.

TRICK OR TREAT ‘Fangtastic’ recipes for Halloween

It’s that time of year again. But we don’t have to wait until October 31 to sink our teeth into some ‘Fangtastic’ foods.

Try out these WICKED ideas to ‘creep’ the fun into every bloody meal!

Bloody Beetroot Buns Ingredients: • • • •

160g cooked beetroot er 20 dates, soaked in a little wat r flou fine a 100g oats, blitzed into 100g almond flour

Goooey Green Icing: • •

1 Avocado 30g Vanilla protein powder

Use jellies or your imaginatio

Method:

1. Pre-heat oven to 180’c.

2. Blitz up beetroot and dates in a blender. Scrape into a mixing bowl.

• 3. Add the blitzed up oats and almond flour and mix until blended together.

• 5. For the icing: Scoop out and mash the avocado in a bowl, discarding the seed in the middle.

• Mix the protein powder in until well blended. Allow buns to cool first before icing.
