Month of Goodbye to miserable, dreary January. Hello February; month of romance! But, if like us, you have children and limited access to babysitters for Valentine’s day you may not be able to get out for a night on the town. Don’t worry, with a little planning you can have a romantic night at home. First tip is to feed the children separately. Give them dinner early and set them up in front of a movie with popcorn and the promise of an ice-pop if they are quiet for a while. Then set the table with candles, linens and wine and enjoy a quiet dinner for two with dimmed lights and soft music. Why not play a special song after dinner and have a dance around the kitchen? Last year we waltzed to the first dance song from our wedding! You don’t have to go out for romance, you just need to set the atmosphere with a little imagination. The final Battle takes place!

The Battle of the Book is a reading programme that ran from September 2016 to January 2017 between Fingal Libraries and six primary schools within the Fingal area and is kindly supported by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). The aim of the programme is to get children reading, by using a multi-disciplinary interactive approach with art, an author visit and an active competition element between the different schools and their local library. The programme is designed to encourage the children to read and gain confidence, to discuss a common book providing a shared experience of reading to ignite a reading for life culture. As well as reading the book “The Ghosts of Magnificent Children” by Caroline Busher the children participate in different activities organised by Fingal Libraries surrounding the themes presented in the book. Two hundred school children from six Fingal schools descended on the Draíocht theatre in Blanchardstown last month, to battle it out in the final of the Battle of the Book. All of the children read The Ghosts of the Magnificent Children by first time author Caroline Busher, who visited each of the schools involved. The schools partaking in the competition were St. Margaret’s National School, Mary Queen of Ireland National School Rivermead, Old Borough Swords, St. Nicholas of Myra Kinsealy, St. Marnock’s Portmarnock and St. Patrick’s in Skerries. The children gathered to take part in a quiz to see which school knew the book and its author best. Ghosts.. is a spooky tale of an evil circus ringmaster, undead children, a blood curse and plenty of weird and wonderful twists and plots. RTE Junior presenter Reuben said when reading the questions out ‘only with this book could I possibly utter the following sentence...what is the name of the man with a duck’s head for a face...!’ It was a very close competition but St Margaret’s National School came out as victors in a highly contested final. The project is jointly funded by the Dublin Airport Authority DAA and Fingal Libraries. Maura Cassidy of the DAA was on hand to present the St Margaret’s team with their certificate. Plan for Thomas Ashe Tourism Centre in Lusk

Lusk Community Council launches its plans for major tourism hub in Lusk which would provide a permanent exhibition on the life and times of Thomas Ashe. 2017 is the Centenary of the death of Ashe and the new Thomas Ashe Tourism Centre situated in the heart of medieval Lusk will be a centre piece of the Centenary programme for Lusk. Ashe died on 25 April 1917 when on hunger strike in Mount-joy Gaol. Thomas Ashe was a man of many parts, a teacher in Corduff National School; the Commandant of the Fingal 5th Battalion that led the successful Battle of

Ashbourne in the Easter Rising; sportsman that established the Round Towers Lusk GAA in 1906; a musician who with John Rooney founded the Black Raven Pipe Band in Lusk. His legacy has been rich and proud in our community and one that deserves a permanent home in Lusk. The site of the proposed tourism centre is a derelict cottage, known as Katie Hunts Cottage, situated in the centre of Lusk and strategically located adjoining the Round Tower national monument. Lusk Community Council encouraged Fingal County Council to acquire the site over 10 years

ago due to its strategic location in the future cultural quarter of Lusk. The Community Council have been working on plans for this site for many years and are delighted to bring an amazing new design for the site. The design recognises the strategic and sensitive location of the medieval heart of Lusk in combination with the significance of a major historical figure, Thomas Ashe, as well as the need for a tourism focal point in Lusk. The Community Council plans to seek funding for the project from the Fingal Leader Partnership.

Grand Re-opening of Pals & Buddies Lusk We are delighted to announce the reopening of Pals and Buddies Montessori School and After-school Care in September 2017. We first opened in September 2011 and had many great times over the years with our little ones and not so little kids in the after school club. Unfortunately the hard decision to close last year was made due to ill health but we are happy to say that this has all been resolved now. We have lots of plans already to ensure that the children’s time with us is a happy and fun place to learn while making new friends. Learning new skills is an important step before children go to big school but play and socialising with their pals is equally as important for them. We achieve this by introducing different themes and topics each week. Some examples of this would be the Seasons, road safety and animals and their babies. Our songs, arts and crafts and activities surround each theme meaning lots of fun for each child. Of course there will be work to be done to make sure that the children are ready for their transition in to their primary school. This includes age appropriate writing, reading and maths skills which are taught individually according to each child’s developmental stage and ability. We will be hosting open days each Saturday in February from 2-4 pm. Everyone is welcome to come over for a chat and to have a look around. We would like to thank all of the parents for their support over the years and hope to see some of you back soon. January, Never A Dull Month! By Darren Aragones, LCC January in Transition Year is no less of a frantic month than any other. Ten Transition Years went to represent Lusk Community College at the ComputeTY course in DCU, for three different topics; App Design, Programming and Web Design. They also went to Trinity College to partake in fencing and rock climbing in the gymnasium, each offering a strong challenge to the students. Finally, science week rounded out this month with a multitude of interesting events for the student body as a whole. 4th Years, did their own exclusive workshop with Daveâ€™s Jungle, being able to touch and learn about exotic animals like komodo dragons and pythons. A rocket workshop was held for all years that allowed students to create and launch their own rocket into the sky, using Physics principles to make it fly high in the air. And finally, SciFest took place which was a science contest similar to Young Scientist where budding students from 4th and 2nd year presented projects they had made. Never a single dull month at Lusk Community College!

Jack Lusk from Tucson, Arizona, USA travelled to London, Scotland and wales where he climbed the Snowdonian Mountain before crossing over to Dublin and Lusk itself. He was warmly welcomed by Pat & John Kelly before visiting the Lusk

Daveâ€™s Jungle Comes to Lusk CC By Amy Penrose, LCC This week in Lusk Community College we were joined by some very strange visitors! On Tuesday the 24th of January, all transition year students packed into the woodwork room, patiently waiting to meet our guests. Our TY coordinator, Ms Mc Nerney, did an amazing job at surprising the TY students by inviting Daveâ€™s jungle to the school. The afternoon was filled with many strange animals including; snakes, legless lizards, crocodiles, bearded dragons, tarantulas, scorpions, crocodiles and even a snapping turtle. The TY students had an amazing time wrapping snakes around their neck, putting a tarantula on their head and learning all about the animal world. It was a great day as some TY students conquered their fears and held some animals that they would normally not be able to even look at. They did all this while posing for photos throughout the afternoon. I think it is safe to say that the excitement was out of this world as all the transition year students had an amazing time meeting their visitors.

Science Week 2017 at Lusk CC

By Megan Lenehan, Dana Aragones, Tara Slevin and Zoe Cooney. LCC A very successful Science Week ran in Lusk Community College, from the 23rd to the 27th of January. Many events took place during it, including a daily science fact being read over the intercom, which was both interesting and informative. A Rocket Workshop, took place, with David Holmes, a physicist coming in to visit us from Science Ireland. The workshop was for

3rd Years and TYs. We learned some interesting facts about space travel and teamed up into groups to create our own rockets made from recycled plastic bottles, duct tape, and tennis balls. The 9 rockets were then launched into the sky with a bicycle pump, going a stunning 30 metres into the air. On the 26th of January, Lusk Community College held their very first Scifest. Students from 2nd year and TY researched science topics and made displays to be judged upon. There were many entries options to display of many different topics and these topics included: biology, physics and chemistry. One of the projects was - The

study of the teenage brain: Dara and Sarah from 4th year studied the teenage brain and compared it to adultsâ€™ brains. It involved looking at someoneâ€™s eyes and they then asked students to tell them what emotion the person had. Another Project was - How random is random? Conor in 2nd year did a study on randomness, for example: is flipping a coin really random? Ingredients • 200g Kale • 1/2 tablespoon rapeseed/olive/coconut oil • Juice from 1/2 lemon/ lime 1/2 teaspoon each of a mix of herbs and spices such as chilli powder/cayenne pepper/smoked paprika.... Tip: If you have a dressing at home such as chilli & lime or basil & garlic, you could also use 1-2 tablespoons of this instead of making your own dressing. 18 LUSK LOCAL-FEBRUARY

Method “Kale....many of us consume it in juices, salads or the traditional Irish ‘colcannon’. But do you know just how nutritionally good kale is and how it can be eaten as a much healthier alternative to standard potato crisps? Kale has a rich iron and vitamin B12 content, both really essential for our energy, alertness, drive and focus in daily tasks. Kale contains several different flavonoids so it is boasting with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Not to mention its high calcium, vitamin C, vitamin K and vitamin A content. It is heart healthy, high in fibre and health promoting. Indeed with all these nutrients we could refer to it as the ‘50 shades of kale’!!! To maximise the nutritional benefits of kale such as the absorption of its calcium and iron content, try combine it with a food rich in vitamin C such as other vegetables like peppers, potatoes, other leafy greens or fruit such as oranges, kiwi or a squeeze of lemon/lime juice. Research also shows that absorption of fat soluble vitamins- A, D, E and K can be aided by combining foods rich in these vitamins with a small amount of healthy fats such as rapeseed or olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, oily fish. In my recipe below I use a splendid mix of healthy fats and vitamin C to make my kale crisps CRAZILY NUTRITIOUS AND DELICIOUS!!. ENJOY!

50 Shades of Kale coming your way: 1. Preheat oven to 150’c. 2. Rip the kale up into large leaves with your hands by removing the stalks. (Throw the stalks into a juice or other recipe. DO NOT WASTE OR YOU WONT BE GETTING YOUR 50 SHADES OF KALE!!) 3. Make the dressing by mixing your chosen oil with juice and herbs/spices. 4. Toss the kale in a large mixing bowl with your dressing. It is important to do this in a mixing bowl rather than on the baking tray to ensure the leaves get covered evenly. 5. Spread the kale pieces onto a baking tray (use a baking sheet/parchment paper to prevent burning). Ensure the kale pieces are not overcrowding so that they all get a fair share of crisping! 6. Bake at 120’c for 15 minutes. Turn them over and bake for another 10-15 minutes until crisp! They will shrink and shrivel and the sooner they are eaten the crispier they will be...SO CRUNCH THE KALE AWAY!!!! Local Businesses Working together to Give Something Back!

Country Crest Farm Shop Team: Elaine, Brendan, Jim, Michael, Malachy, John with Neven Maguire

By Rachel Reilly December just gone, Irish celebrity chef, Neven Maguire demonstrated the best way to cook the perfect festive dinner. Hosted by Country Crest, in Jones Garden Centre, in aid of the Saint Vincent de Paul. The event was a roaring success as the hall filled out, and people enjoyed canapés and mulled wine as they arrived. A fascinated silence fell as Neven talked the audience through his method of cooking a delicious Christmas dinner. For starters he cooked up some deep fried prawns from Dublin Bay. The main course was ‘Roast Turkey with Chestnut & Cranberry Stuffing’, and ‘Ham with Sticky Apricot & Ginger Glaze’, followed by a ‘Lemon Posset with Berries. Neven also cooked up a mouth watering rib eye steak that he sourced from the Country Crest Farm Shop, with a side of beautiful buttery mash potatoes. Throughout the evening, Neven answered lots of questions so the

audience could get the most out of the cookery demonstration, as well as giving high praise for the Country Crest beef, saying it is the most flavoursome beef they have ever used at his restaurant. Neven was charming and humorous in his answers as he gave out advice about his cooking. At the end of the demonstration, when all the questions had been answered, a raffle took place with very generous prizes such as hampers and vouchers from the Country Crest Farm Shop, Jones Garden Centre, and Newgrange Gold. On top of this, Maguire also added a fabulous prize, a voucher including dinner, and bed and breakfast at his own restaurant, MacNean House. Country Crest had goody bags for everyone in the audience, with potatoes and onions from their farm and a printed booklet with all the recipes from the evening. A hundred per cent of the proceeds raised that evening went to the Saint Vincent de Paul. Overall this event raised a whopping €3,706, which was presented to a representative of the SVP on the night.

Donabate Portrane Tennis Club Seeks New Members

Donabate Portrane Tennis Club which opened only six months ago is currently a very active and vibrant club with over 300 members. Located on the grounds of Donabate Golf Club, the tennis club have four all -weather flood lit courts and full use of the clubhouse facilities for all members. Open for play daily from 8am-10pm members can use the online booking system to book a court. To celebrate the new year and for people wishing to take up the sport, the club has a new six month offers for interested people to sign up to June. The club welcomes members of all abilities including beginners, and coaching, social tennis and competitions are

While other clubs take two weeks off over the Christmas period Junsa Taekwondo keeps on training to keep its athletes in top condition. We were joined by members from other clubs for the Christmas training sessions, Baldoyle tkd, South Dublin tkd, champion tkd and One Taekwondo Australia. January kicked off with a development competition in Tallaght where junsa’s younger members got their first chance to display their skills. Head instructor Master Stuart Russell will be visiting Lusk National school in the coming weeks to teach the children new skills and that Taekwondo is for everyone. Junsa Taekwondo holds its classes in the Round Towers GAA club and is always taking on new members of all ages. Latest news from Lusk Athletics Club FIT4LIFE Springs into Action A fantastic new group of Fit4Life started with over 15 newcomers to the club. On behalf of everyone in the club you are very welcome. There is a great support structure in the club so you won’t be without encouragement. We have a full 6-month plan in place for you. All we ask of you is to commit to the first 5 weeks and be at training. After that it gets easier. Training takes place on Tuesday and Thursdays at 7pm from Lusk NS. Welcome and good luck!

Leinster Cross Country Relay, Dunboyne

Dublin Masters Cross Country Championships On January 8th Lusk AC entered a ladies and gents team in the Dublin Masters Cross Country Championships. This is the third year we entered teams in the event that has seen a huge revival recently. No prizes were won by any of the team though it was tough and enjoyable. For a lot of the team it was a first experience racing on grass and muck so huge congratulations. Thanks to all the supporters who lined the route, cheered and made it a great day out.

On Sunday 15th January Lusk AC was represented in Leinster Cross Country Relay, Dunboyne by Daniel O’Brien, Oisín McEvoy, DJ Reilly and Thomas Lara in the U16 Boys’ cross country event. The four boys had a great start to the year, each running 500m to complete the 2km course and enjoying one last cross country event before the indoors season starts next week.

Noticeboard & Parish News Friends of Autism & ADHD ASSESSMENTS Friends of Autism & ADHD are delighted to be in a position to be able to fund a number of assessments for young people with possible Autism and or ADD/ ADHD. These assessments will consist of an educational assessment by Clinical Educational Psychologist. Dr Ann Prosser, Psy.D. ,a licensed Certified Clinical Psychologist. Applications from schools are not accepted without written parental consent. Along with the assessment there will be the support of our Advocacy worker, Ms.Bernie Hagan. Bernie will be able to meet with parents/carers to discuss the reports and will assist in any way she can in sourcing the necessary supports required for the child. These assessments will be fully funded by Friends of Autism/ADHD.. Please note we do not receive any state funding whatsoever. These assessments are a direct result of the amazing work of the staff and volunteers of Friends Of Autism & ADHD and to those who donate to Friends Of Autism &ADHD. We are so grateful to all for their generosity. It is regrettable but places for these assessments are limited. First preference will be given to young people who have not already received an assessment from any other source. WHIST CARD GAME LUSK Whist is an old card game played since the 18th century. Whist is the direct forerunner to the game of Bridge. It is a simple trick taking game played by four players who play in two partnerships. A standard 52 card pack is used each player gets 13 cards each. Card rank highest to lowest. In each round there is a special trump suit whose cards are

considered higher than all the other suits. Whist has been played in Lusk since the early 1970s. Its a great social evening friendly atmosphere and new friendships can be formed. New members are welcome. Knowledge and experience of playing the game are not necessary as the members will assist you to learn the game It take about 2 hours to play. Whist takes place every Wednesday night @ 8.30pm sharp in the Parish Hall Cost is 6 euro.
