Lusk Tidy Towns announces card launch Following another successful year in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition, Lusk Tidy Towns Association has announced that its annual Christmas Card & Calendar Launch will take place on Friday, November 18 in Murray’s Top Shop at 8.30pm. The card and calendar will be launched by Dublin Fingal TD Darragh O’Brien (FF), while Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, will also be in attendance. In 1992 Lusk Tidy Towns saw its first set of postcards being launched which then progressed to its annual Christmas Cards & Calendars. The cards have been sent all over the world and the fact that so many have emigrated, this little reminder of home is welcomed. Everyone is welcome to the launch for music, raffle and refreshments. Lusk Tidy Towns will also be celebrating its second Bronze Medal in the National Tidy Towns Competition, the results of which were announced in September.

While Skerries claimed the overall national title for the first time, Lusk won a bronze medal in Category E (population between 5,001 and 10,000) for the second consecutive year. Significantly though, Lusk’s marks rose to 300 up seven from the 293 it achieved in 2015. Meanwhile, the 2016 Fingal County Council Cleaner Community Awards were presented at a special ceremony recently. Among the local winners were: The Country Garden, Lusk (Best Presented Front Garden); Kelly’s Garage Ltd (Best Presented Business Premises); and Ballyboughal Hedgegrow Society (Best Presented Village). In the course of the evening, 39 prizes from a total number of over 100 entries were awarded in 21 categories including the Overall Winner award which was won this year by Skerries Tidy Towns.

It’s all in the name for Lusk visitors The beautiful village of Lusk recently welcomed visitors from all over the world. Bonnie Lusk, Debra Lusk and Brenda Lusk, from Canada, visited after touring Ireland and thoroughly enjoyed their time in the village. Their family line comes from Joseph Lusk who was born in 1785 in County Antrim and went to Canada in 1820. Pat Kelly of Lusk Heritage Association brought them to Lusk Heritage Centre where they exchanged post cards. Robert and Elizabeth Lusk and their friends Christopher and Andrea Jones visited all the way from Texas. They too met with Pat Kelly who sent them home with souvenirs of our very own LUSK LOCAL magazine. Then there was a visit from Australian couple Greg and Carole Brinsmead. Carole’s great great great grandfather was Mathew Barnewall. After 15 years of research they were delighted to be here and to meet Pat Kelly who put them in touch with Sir Reginald Barnewall. They too left with many photos and postcards of our lovely town.

1916 Memorial officially opens in Lusk Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler officially opened a landmark 1916 Memorial in Lusk recently. The project follows two years of work by Lusk Community Council to create a permanent memorial dedicated to the men and women of Lusk and Fingal who participated in the 1916 Easter Rising. The volunteers of Lusk and neighbouring towns and villages rallied during Easter 1916 under the command of Thomas Ashe, Principal of the local national school in Corduff. The names of all the men and women volunteers from this time are listed on a special information plaque at the memorial. The memorial features the 1916 Proclamation, carved in Irish limestone. The Proclamation represents the spirit and values of 1916 volunteers as they put in place the stepping stones for Ireland’s future independence.

The dedication of the memorial in Lusk featured members of both the Lusk Black Raven Pipe Band and the Rush Saint Maurs Pipe Band, the Fingal Old IRA and members of the Defence Forces. Symbolically the memorial is situated on a site adjoining the Carnegie Library Hall, where the Black Raven Pipe Band was founded and where Thomas Ashe gave Irish classes in the years before 1916. The site of the memorial was kindly donated by Robert Hand, from Lusk, specifically for the purpose of a 1916 Memorial. Chairperson of Lusk Community Council, Brian Arnold, said : “1916 was a time when ordinary people from our community went on to do extraordinary things in the national interest.” Mr Arnold said he was delighted that so many of the descendants of these families were in attendance on the day.

Lusk delegation raises Oberstown concerns

A Lusk delegation had a very positive meeting with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone, recently to discuss issues surrounding Oberstown Detention Centre. The group highlighted their concerns regarding security in the community following a series of

breakouts and incidents at Oberstown. The delegation comprised Michael Hoey, Pat Rooney, Anne Doran Butterly, Brian Arnold, Senator James Reilly (FG) and Brendan Ryan TD (Lab). They highlighted the need for a root and

branch review of the operational procedures that should be in place to ensure that residents of Lusk can feel safe in their own homes. The meeting with Minister Zappone was requested following a public meeting held at Man O War GAA Club where all the views of local residents were aired. Serious concerns regarding security procedures at Oberstown Detention Centre, which has to date cost the taxpayer €56 million to deliver a ‘state of the art’ facility were raised. However, locals in Lusk believe that the experience over recent months is anything but ‘state of the art’, with four breakouts over the last 12 months as well as a major fire causing serious damage to the facility. Minister Zappone carefully listened to the concerns of the delegation. She said the requests of the delegation were reasonable and felt it was important to work together. Minister Zappone agreed to share with the delegation her plans that are being worked on in terms of security and operational protocols. The Minister hoped that these plans would be “living” documents and would be updated over time in line of the changes that will take place. Minister Zappone confirmed that she will respond to the delegation soon with a timeline for plans to address the concerns raised.

Remember Us seeks support for new premises

A social group for young people and adults with special needs desperately needs funds to fit out its new premises. Remember Us recently launched a campaign to get their new space at Balbriggan Retail Park fitted out. Nora Roban, founder of Remember Us, said: “We are approximately halfway there and continue to look to the community of North Fingal for support. “Funds are desperately needed to make this dream real for our special members. We are especially looking for companies to come on board and support us. “Employees could also fundraise for us. In return they would get publicity on our website, Facebook, local media etc. It would also be a feel good factor to have been part of this very unique project. “We would be delighted to hear from you or we can come to your company and tell you the story of Remember Us.” Ms Roban added: “On behalf of all our members, I would like to say a big thank you to all those who have supported us to date.” If you would like to support this very worthwhile campaign in the community, please contact Nora on 086-0457003 or email hello@rememberus.ie. The countdown to Christmas begins By the time you read this article, you will probably have heard at least one Christmas carol in a shop, seen a festive window display or heard a few work colleagues bringing up the subject of what they’ll be wearing at the staff party. No sooner has the last Halloween bonfire been extinguished and the last nut cracked, than our thoughts automatically turn towards Christmas. Every year we say we won’t get caught up too early in the madness, but we always fail. It’s human nature and we just can’t help ourselves once we hear that first bar of ‘All I Want For Christmas’. For children this is obviously a time of year that can’t come quick enough. Indeed, if you asked them would they cancel Halloween and have Christmas come earlier, they’d probably bite your hand off ! However, while eye-catching window displays entice children into the shops with their reluctant parents, it’s the latter that have to pick up the tab.

Sadly, there is a downside to Christmas for hard-pressed parents – debt. It’s not unusual for parents to overspend at this time of year. It might be okay to go just that little bit overboard during your seasonal spree but spending significantly more than you can afford isn’t. Somewhere along the line there has to be a payback and usually it comes along with the January blues and the dreaded sight of your local postman walking up the garden path with a sack full of bills. You might not think it’s a big deal to consider deferring repayments until the New Year but is that really the way you want to welcome in 2017? By delaying repayments, you will only ending up paying extra in interest charges, and there could also be a negative effect on your credit rating too. So before you give into the child who wants EVERYTHING for Christmas and the most expensive toy from Santa, think of the possible repercussions. Of course, if there is one thing this recession has taught us is: how to get a grip on reality. The older generation will remember a time when they were lucky to get one gift at Christmas. God knows what they think of all the madness going on around them in the modern day. Christmas is not just for children though as we adults like to let our hair down too. Already Christmas Party nights have been booked and in the coming weeks hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues will be receiving calls (if they haven’t already) to cater for another party. There was a time not long ago when the sacred Christmas Party was under threat due to the recession, with many workplaces deciding against the annual splurge but thankfully that’s all behind us now and this Christmas could be the best in a very long time. At this time of year, it’s also a good thing if you can shop local where possible, and support the businesses that have been there for us through thick and thin. It would also help to foster some good old community spirit. The countdown is on, now let the fun begin!

All work and loads of play for Lusk students

The TY students have been enjoying a number of outdoor pursuits.

In Lusk Community College’s first ever Transition Year, classes aren’t just all work and no play. From the crazy chemical flames caused in a Chemistry classroom, to the intense debates in a History room, lessons in TY so far are a whole new form. Students can try modules in nearly every sector of education, having a go at dissecting a rat in Biology, or staring into space in Physics. Then run your own company in Business class, study driving at the Road Safety Authority or try to take your teacher’s attention away in Psychology. Maybe you’d like to compete for a spot on the coveted Student Council or take part in Model United Nations activities. You can do anything and everything! Transition Year students have entered many competitions so far from SciFest and Young Scientist to Student Enterprise. Students also plan to complete Gaisce, the President’s Awards this year. TY students also plan to give a lot of time back to the community by involving themselves in the Young Social 10 LUSK LOCAL-NOVEMBER

Innovators programme. Pensioners Pals will visit Lusk Community Unit every week to form a joint choir with the residents while the Hasta Le Vista Litter group plan to make the school and local area cleaner. TY students have got involved with the local St Vincent de Paul (SVP), bagpacking at the Pavilions and now they plan to collect as many copper coins as they can for the charity. Lusk TY students also have very high hopes that their part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoeboxes will collect more shoeboxes than ever before. All shoeboxes are welcome at the school. The first TY Programme has got off to a great start. Modules have taken students beyond the classrooms and they are learning skills that will benefit them long into the future. They have formed new friendships with other TY students because of the many amazing trips they have been lucky to experience. They have every reason to look forward to a fantastic year ahead.

Good news for Lusk Community College Senator James Reilly (FG) has welcomed the announcement of the Phase 2 development of Lusk Community College tender approval. This school extension will bring the capacity up from 350 to 1,000. The news was announced on October 18. Senator Reilly told Lusk Local: “This is badly needed here in Lusk, where for years, we watched our young people being dispersed to the four corners of the north county and beyond, to the detriment of their social connections in Lusk and also with a great loss to many of the local clubs. “Now they can complete their secondary education and remain with their

Reduce your mortgage repayments by €163 per month – Scollard Financial Services A campaign to help mortgage holders switch to a better deal has been launched by Scollard Financial Services, Mortgage Brokers, Lusk. Are you one of the thousands of people paying a standard variable interest rate on your mortgage? Local councillor Ken Farrell (Lab) raised a number of issues pertaining to Lusk at a recent meeting of Fingal County Council. Cllr Farrell called on the council to issue a report on what action will be taken to alleviate the serious traffic hazard that exists in the vicinity of the entrances to Rush and Lusk Railway Station and will it note the number of serious accidents that take place at this location.

In its report the council said that Irish Rail carry out maintenance work, cutting back vegetation at the entrance and exits from the train station in order to improve road safety. “A signage scheme was to be implemented at the entrance to the train station. The scheme consisted of advanced directional signs advising of the train station entrance and speed reduction warning signs. “Agreement from a local landowner was not forthcoming and the scheme has been put in abeyance,” said the council. Following the discussion the manager has indicated that he has an alternative plan and will report back to the next meeting. Separately, Cllr Farrell asked the chief executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid for a detailed report outlining when the playground at Chapel Farm, Lusk, will be brought up to standard and available for use by the public. Mr Reid said the playground is currently in a tender process and subject to there being no unexpected delays it is hoped that it will be up to standard for summer 2017. Continuing on the subject of playgrounds, Cllr Farrell asked Mr Reid for an up to date report on any progress that has been made with the developer to ensure that the playground that he had agreed to erect on the open space between Remount Farm Estate and the Forge Estate commences as soon as possible. Mr Reid said the developers of the Forge Estate in Lusk have not progressed the development of the public playground, soccer pitch and associated car parking as conditioned in the planning permission. “Accordingly the financial bond is being drawn down to address this deficiency. A design and public procurement process will be required to address the outstanding works and the council will pursue this within the shortest possible timeframe,” he said. These issues were raised at the Balbriggan/Swords Area Committee Meeting which was held in Swords on October 13.

Five ways to have more of your income left

Do a bit of homework to see how much more of your income you can keep.

By Dave Kavanagh You’ve listened to the budget commentary and worked out roughly how much better off you will be in 2017 (or not if you smoke!). But are there other ways to increase the amount of your hard, earned cash that you have left over each month? Actually, there are but we do tend to put off doing things that can make a difference only to pay for it in the long run. Here’s a few practical changes you can make to leave you with more of your money.

1. Keep a detailed spending budget for a month – Most people think they know

what they’re spending on each month but doing an exercise like this and documenting every single cent that is spent each day can be very eyeopening. Studies have shown, you are twice as likely to have more money each month if you do this. Each day, keep note of any spending, whether it’s 50c in a parking meter or €2 for a newspaper or €1,200 rent. Log the spending each evening strictly and after a month, you will be quite surprised! 2. Shop clever – Make a list before you do the weekly shop. Plan what you actually need, write it down and stick to the list. Avoid the “Oh that looks nice” grabbing which often turns to “that’s gone off, throw it out” a few days later. 20 LUSK LOCAL-NOVEMBER

If you’re not good at remembering prices, keep your receipt and bring it with you the following week. This way you can see if a store has sneaked up a few prices and choose accordingly. When buying more expensive items, make sure you do a bit of research. Just because something is marked as ‘20% off ’ does not mean it’s not cheaper in another local shop that has no reductions.

3. Look at switching utility providers

- Despite some great savings to be made, less

than 20 per cent of households switch providers of things like electricity, gas, telephone/broadband etc. Yes, it can take a bit of time but it could amount to saving the equivalent of a week’s wages by spending an hour on the phone/computer.

4. Review premiums that you are paying – For the ones that come in every year,

such as car or home insurance, taking the time to ring around and compare like with like can yield great savings. At the very least, ring your existing provider and ask “can you do any better?” For the longer term ones such as life cover, mortgage protection, serious illness cover etc, it only takes minutes to see if you can get the same cover (or better) for lower premiums. This is particularly relevant if you commenced them with a bank or insurance company that could only quote their own products. You could be paying the most expensive in the market.

Just make sure you talk to someone who is not tied to just one company and can compare and find you the best option available. If you have given up smoking since you commenced one of these plans and have been off them for at least 12 months, the savings are colossal.

5. Examine your bank statements – Take out a few months’ bank statements and

make sure you can account for every deduction that is made. Regularly, we see people paying for things that should have been cancelled months or even years ago. There may also be debits for items that are no longer relevant or used, such as club memberships or subscriptions. It is also a good exercise in the prevention of fraud, which occurs far more frequently than you may think. Of course, this can all take a bit of time and effort but unless you’re suffering from the complaint of having too much money left over each month, what have you got to lose? •Dave Kavanagh QFA has been a Financial Advisor for over 20 years. New cross-country venue We were delighted to be among the first athletics’ clubs taking part in the Dublin Juvenile Championships on October 16 at the new cross-country venue at Abbotstown National Sports Campus. It is an extremely impressive venue with wide open spaces for the runners. Congratulations to Athletics Ireland, National Sports Campus and Fingal County Council on your investment. The National Championships are taking place there. If you get the chance, go see this top class venue for yourself. All our athletes ran very well on the day with JD Kelly and Max Lara going forward to represent Lusk and Dublin in the National Championships. Well done everyone.

Mini-Muckers dig in! We had an excellent afternoon of fun at the Mini-Muckers’ event in Kildare recently. Congratulations and well done to everyone who took part – hope you didn’t get too dirty! This was completely different to the usual cross-country, and track and field events which Lusk AC normally enters. This is definitely something we will contemplate again. Busy spell for Junsa Taekwondo The last few months have been particularly busy for all at Junsa Taekwondo and that trend is set to continue. Members are currently preparing for competitions, club gradings, black belt grading and World Championships so keep an eye out on their progress in Lusk Local. Meanwhile, Junsa Taekwondo trains at Round Towers GAA Club Lusk and is always accepting new members. Kids set the pace for local parkrun Some of the local youngsters who took part in the parkrun in Donabate.

On the 52nd week of the Donabate parkrun (October 8), the kids took over the running of the event to mark the milestone. The group of kids involved were: Alex Curtis, Caoimhe McCarthy, Daniel Hand, Greg Curtis, Jessica Hand, Ben Hand, Max Lara, Olivia Smyth, Richard Bolton, Sam Baker Gorman, Sarah Canty.
