Murray’s receive Lusk business award

Murray’s of Lusk recently won the Lusk Tidy Towns Best Business Premises Award. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler visited one of North County Dublin’s best known pubs to present the prize to Cora Murray and her daughter Liz. Secretary of Lusk Tidy Towns, Pat Kelly, was among those in attendance and praised Murray’s for the great effort they put into the competition every year.

Another bronze medal for Lusk Tidy Towns

Lusk Tidy Towns had reason to celebrate when the 2016 SuperValu TidyTowns competition results were announced on September 26. While Skerries claimed the overall national title for the first time, Lusk won a bronze medal in Category E (population between 5,001 and 10,000) for the second consecutive year. Signicantly though, Lusk’s marks rose to 300 up seven from the 293 total it achieved in 2015. It was a fantastic result for Pat Kelly and her dedicated team of hardworking volunteers who worked flat out in the spring and summer months to ensure that Lusk looked its very best when the judges arrived in the beautiful North County Dublin village. Skerries received 327 marks, also in Category E; Ballyboughal 273 marks in Category B (population 201-1,000); Balrothery 238 marks (population 1,001-2,500); and Swords 286 marks in Category H (population 25,000 and over). Interest in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition has been consistently high in recent times with the number of entries exceeding 800 each year for the last five years. Reid, congratulated Skerries on its national award. “This is a great tribute to the people of Skerries for their diligence and hard work over the years. “The competition standards are very high and to achieve the top award is a fantastic achievement for all. “I would also like to compliment the excellent contribution of our own Operations staff who work every day to keep Fingal clean and tidy,” said Mr Reid. Fingal County Council works closely with all Tidy Towns committees in the county and said it acknowledges the hard work and effort of all the volunteers which has been reflected by the improving year on year scores achieved by other Fingal entries. Fingal Senator Dr James Reilly also congratulated Skerries Tidy Towns. “A huge amount of effort has gone in and the award is thoroughly deserved. The team in Skerries have been working incredibly hard over many years for this and It’s great that their work has paid off. “Of course, it’s not just about awards, it’s about having pride in where you’re from and doing your

bit to make it a better place to live. “It’s a fantastic achievement for any town to win the award and I’m delighted that a town in the North County has won,” he said. Decent skins to mark National Potato Day

There will be plenty of fun at Newbridge House & Farm.

Keogh’s Farm and Country Crest are calling on families to join them on Saturday, October 8 in honour of Ireland’s greatest staple food - the potato. The National Potato Day celebrations will take place at Newbridge House & Farm, Donabate, with food and family fun activities between 12noon and 4pm. The free, family fun day is being hosted by local farming businesses, Keogh’s Farm and Country Crest, in celebration of National Potato Day. Some of the exciting activities on the day will include potato sack racing, tug-o-war, face painting, bouncy castles, arts and crafts, music and more. Lusk man is harvesting a bright future A Lusk man represented the capital in this year’s FBD Young Farmer of the Year competition Shane Halpin, a member of North County Dublin Macra, represented Dublin at the recent event held at the Boyne Valley Hotel, Drogheda. Farming has always been a passion of Shane’s. He is currently growing pumpkins, destined for the Halloween market, on his own farm and also works on his uncle’s vegetable farm and does seasonal work with other growers. Below cost selling, competition from imports and changing dietary trends are concerns of Shane’s for the sector. However, the local man is hoping to grow new crops and develop new markets. The aim of the competition is to recognise and reward the country’s top young farmers. Entrants are judged according to a number of criteria including farm business initiative and innovation, levels of farm efficiency and enterprise quality, farm safety and environmental protection awareness, as well as agricultural knowledge and community involvement. The 18th FBD Young Farmer of the Year was named as Kevin Moran, a young Dairy farmer from County Mayo. He has won the prestigious title following a challenging interview process and an on farm visit. Judging panel chairman, Michael Hoey, managing director of local company, Country Crest, announced the winner at the awards ceremony. The competition is organised annually by Macra na Feirme in partnership with the IFA and sponsors, FBD.

TGI Fridays provides food for children’s day out TGI Fridays Swords provided food, including dessert, for around 1,500 children who attended this year’s Dublin Taxidrivers’ Special Children’s Day Out on September 13. The taxi drivers took the children with special needs out for a big day of fun in the capital. Children with special needs from over 35 hospitals and centres from across the city met at Parnell Square where the parade was officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr. The event kicked off with a live DJ, street theatre, balloon modelling and plenty of goodies for all. Then the cavalcade of taxis along with their Garda escort paraded down O’Connell Street en route to the Tote Hall at Leopardstown Racecourse. Entertainment for the afternoon included boy bands, face painters, magicians, clowns and a laser show. NRC Taxis proudly sponsored this very worthwhile event.

Halloween

Plenty of treats in store for Halloween By Patrick Martin The evenings are getting shorter, the mornings are getting cooler and those long bright evenings are but a distance memory as another inconsistent summer has slipped through our grasp. However, while the changing of the seasons can bring with it an air of gloom, despair not. Halloween, and all the excitement it entails, is almost upon us once more, and is the last fun festival we have to enjoy before the countdown to Christmas begins. Local children (as well as the adults) will already be entertaining thoughts of what they’ll be dressing up as with October 31 fast approaching. Every year the costumes get more and more adventurous with plenty of creativity on show for us to admire. Children are becoming more imaginative with their choice of outfit and there is always the added incentive of competitions for the Best Costume to send them into creative mode. Of course, Trick or Treat will never go out of fashion, and especially for the younger ones, it’s probably the most magical part of the whole Halloween experience. However, there are usually lots of other things to do locally so keep an eye out for events, including Halloween camps and Ghostbus tours that may be taking place in the community. There will also be a mid-term break for the children to enjoy (and their

teachers!), and the last bank holiday of the year to look forward to. This year it actually falls on Monday, October 31. Although Halloween is always a magical time for the youngsters, there are safety issues that can’t be ignored, especially if the children are attending bonfires. Because, the clock will have gone back an hour the previous weekend, it will be darker earlier, and it’s probably a good idea to have your children dressed in bright colours if they are going around the doors Trick or Treating. Also, it’s vital that adults supervise the children at all times. For many years, bonfires on green spaces in residential areas were a main feature of Halloween, and continue to be a huge attraction for people of all ages. However, while the sight of a blazing fire illuminating the night sky can add more than a frisson of excitement to the Halloween experience, bonfires come with a major health warning. Horror stories emerging from the Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments in our hospitals over the Halloween period are becoming all too common with some unfortunate people sadly ending up with life-altering injuries that could so easily have been prevented with safety precautions. The fact of the matter is: illegal bonfires can be highly dangerous and can cause a serious amount of damage to people and the environment. Indeed, local authorities, including Fingal County Council, are left counting the cost financially long after the last bonfire has fizzled out. Of course, this is money that if it were redirected towards providing local amenities, would benefit the entire community all year round. At this time of year, spare a thought too for the excellent work carried out by our emergency services that are on standby to deal with every eventuality on their busiest night of the year. Despite these warnings, don’t lose sight of the fact that Halloween is meant to be a special time in which to have fun. Stay safe and enjoy all the events that are happening in the community. Let’s hope the locals in Lusk have a great time and provide the wow factor with their range of costumes!

Recipe for Halloween Bat Wings Parents might think it a bit disgusting because of the colour but it’s healthy and really appeals to kids! By: Minichefs Fifteen chicken wings; one large clove of garlic; three tablespoons of Muscovado Sugar; three tablespoons of light Soy Sauce or Worcester Sauce; three tablespoons of Tomato Puree; two tablespoons of Runny Honey; Black, Blue and Green Food Colouring    Instructions Preheat oven to 109C/375F/ Gas 5. Put wings in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil. Cook for about 20 minutes.  While waiting for the wings to cook prepare the sauce. Crush the clove of garlic then add sugar, soy sauce, tomato puree & honey and mix really well together. Add the food colouring about three drops at a time for each colour until the sauce looks black in colour. Pour into an oven proof dish (large enough for the wings). Drain the wings thoroughly then carefully add them to the sauce and coat evenly. Bake in the oven for a further 15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened and turn the wings over again. Council selected for Housing Agency project Fingal County Council has been invited to work with the Housing Agency on a vacant properties project. The pilot research project will explore ways in which local authorities can precisely identify vacant properties and the reasons for the vacancies with the objective of acquiring properties for social housing. In his report to the September meeting of the council, chief executive Paul Reid said that the recent Preliminary Census of Population report revealed that the vacant dwellings rate fell from seven per cent in 2011, to 5.5 per cent in 2016 which was considerably lower than the national average of 12.8 per cent and the regional average of 6.9 per cent. Mr Reid also reported that there were 40 void social housing units at the end of August and explained to councillors that it was virtually impossible to return a lower figure of voids from a housing stock of over 5,000 homes. “That is the lowest percentage of voids of stock,” said Mr Reid. “We would all like it to be zero but it will never be. That is normal stock churn and we have less than one per cent of our stock in voids.” He added that the council places voids in two categories depending on the level of

repairs required and the turnaround times range from eight to 12 weeks for category one voids and eight to 16 weeks for category two. “We have pretty good processes,” he said. Mr Reid revealed that 60 per cent of applicants for Housing Support within Fingal have responded to letters sent out by the council’s housing department as part of the preparation of a Summary of Social Housing Need Assessment under the 2009 Housing Act. The preliminary closing date was August 19 and reminder letters have been issued to those applicants who have not yet responded. “The onus is on the resident to advise us if they have moved. We are doing everything in our power to make contact with people,” said Mr Reid. He also stated that the council is currently in the process of identifying suitable qualifying projects as part of the €200 million Local Infrastructure Housing Activation Fund which was recently established under Rebuilding Ireland, the Government’s Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness. The aim of this fund is to support the development of critical infrastructures, such as roads, which will facilitate and make viable the use of zoned lands for larger housing developments.

Linders Renault – A big company with a bigger heart

A local charity received a brand new van recently after its message of hope won over the heart of Linders Motors Fleet Manager Ciaran Curran. The Andy Morgan Foundation have been donating ‘Buddy Benches’ to schools with the aim of allowing children, who may be feeling under pressure, to take time out and sit quietly. The benches are built by local Men’s Sheds and prisoners in Wheatfield Prison. However, the Foundation found that it was unable to deliver the benches because it didn’t have the necessary transport. Joanne Fetherston, partner of the late Andy Morgan, said they just took it upon themselves to ask for a van as they had nothing to lose. They hoped they might get a van that had been traded in. However, their plight plucked the heartstrings of Mr Curran. Mr Curran took the story to the company’s bosses and they were only too delighted to help such a wonderful bunch of selfless people. Mr Curran called the Foundation’s Angie McEvoy in for a meeting to see what could be done to help. Linders’ bosses were blown away at the meeting by the Foundation’s work. Mr Curran said they knew they had to lend their support. “The concept of the Buddy Bench and the Foundation itself do so much great work and they are local to us here in North Dublin,” he said. Ms Fetherston said: “We have lots of schools waiting and now that we have the very generous gift of the van we can get things moving.” The Andy Morgan Foundation was set up in 2011. Its aim is to spread the message of HOPE to everyone who has lost someone to suicide and those suffering with depression, and to help children and teenagers.

Andy Morgan was a popular and outgoing local man who took his own life on New Year’s Eve 2010 to the utter devastation and shock of his partner Joanne, his three children and many friends. In the years since his death, Joanne and Andy’s friends have focused their efforts on ensuring others don’t have to go through what they’ve experienced. The Andy Morgan Foundation, set up in Andy’s memory, has since raised money for local suicide prevention and support services. The Foundation is now rolling out ‘Make A Bracelet Workshops’ in all primary schools with the help of secondary schoolchildren.

Cllr Farrell raises local issues at council level

Local councillor Ken Farrell (Lab) raised a number of issues pertaining to Lusk at a recent meeting of Fingal County Council. Among them was a call for the council to introduce necessary traffic calming measures at Kilhedge Lane, Lusk to alleviate the serious problem of speeding that exists at this location. Cllr Farrell called for the measures to include the following works: (a) Speed Ramps (b) Rumble Strips (c) Children at Play signs

d) Speed limit signs (the Pilot scheme be introduced at this location, to cover Dun Emer (Kilhedge Lane) Kilhedge Lane is a lane that is both rural and residential. In its report the council said the rural part does not have public lighting and is not suitable for the placement of ramps. In the residential part there are three existing ramps at the Barrack Lane end of the road. The close proximity of driveways, the existence of parallel parking bays, ramp spacing requirements, and the position of public lighting, reduces the options for additional ramps. The council said it is not recommended to install rumble strips due to the resulting traffic noise which would not be acceptable in a residential area. “There are children at play signs already on Kilhedge Lane, one at the Barrack Lane end and one as you enter the developed section of the lane from the R132,” it said. In relation to speed limit signs, the council said there is a 50km/h sign as one enters the developed section of Kilhedge Lane from the R132. “There is no requirement for repeater speed limit signs in an urban area,” it added. “Kilhedge Lane will be listed for consideration in the future for a 30kph speed limit.” Separately, Cllr Farrell urged the committee to recommend that the football pitch at Chapel Farm Drive, Lusk, be brought up to standard and to indicate when this facility will be available to the public.” The council said the playing surface of this sports pitch was unsafe for use at the time of taking-in-charge and a series of works have been required to bring it up to the required standard. “The surface was uneven and there were some drainage issues, and these remedial works are weather and climate dependent,” the council told Cllr Farrell. “While some drainage works have been carried out on this pitch, further surface works are planned for the coming months. It is hoped that this sports pitch will be available for summer 2017.”

Red Kites programme a success

The successful fledging of young red kites in Fingal has been confirmed.

This summer the Golden Eagle Trust was overjoyed to announce the confirmed successful fledging of young red kites in Fingal. Two nests are now confirmed to have fledged a total of three chicks in 2016 in the county. The Golden Eagle Trust (GET), along with project partners National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Welsh Kite Trust, brought back red kites to Ireland between 2007 and 2011.

The Fingal Red Kite release programme was part of the final and fifth year of an ambitious project to re-establish Red Kites in Ireland. The GET managed the Fingal Red Kite project, which was funded by Fingal LEADER Partnership through the Rural Development Programme 2007- 2013 and NPWS. Fingal County Council and a private landowner hosted and facilitated the two separate release cages. In 2011 the final batch of 53 red kites were released and saw these graceful raptors released including at these strategic locations in Fingal. The Fingal sites were located half way between the initial red kite release locations in County Wicklow and County Down. Dr Marc Ruddock, Red Kite Project Manager for GET, said the project was aimed to maximise the final year of the reintroduction and to help establish a contiguous east coast All-Ireland red kite population. “We know this year that there are now Fingal kites known to be breeding in County Down and County Wicklow and both Northern Ireland and Wicklow kites are also recorded in Fingal so we are buoyant that the reintroduction can be considered a remarkable success in Ireland,” he said. Monitoring of the red kites has been undertaken since kites were released July 2011 but unfortunately the project was beset with unexpected losses in the first 12 months with 10 kites confirmed dead during radio-tracking. These deaths were not considered in vain as it allowed the project team to identify a previously unknown threat to kites and other raptors in this area from second generation rodenticides and these deaths contributed to the formation of the national Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) to raise awareness and understanding of these important chemicals. Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer for Fingal County Council, said: “The last time we had red kites breeding in North County Dublin would have been more than a century ago, so this is a pretty amazing result.”

Let’s be honest: we Irish just love a party and will celebrate anything at the drop of a hat. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that we’re already thinking of the Christmas Party season and we haven’t even got to Halloween yet. Anyway it wouldn’t be good for staff morale to have a row over Christmas before the run up to the festive season has a chance to get off the ground. The staff party is a chance to let your hair down with your work colleagues for at least one night of the year. It’s also an opportunity to get to know those people you work with on a more personal level.

However, the Christmas Party must also be approached with caution. If you’re up dancing on tables after becoming a bit inebriated, remember, you will have to face the boss the following Monday morning. Also, if you fancy one of your work colleagues, the Christmas Party may not be the right time to make your move, especially if you’ve had a few drinks too many. So it might be better to steer clear of that piece of mistletoe which caught your eye as soon as you walked in the door. Remember at all times that your reputation is on the line and one wrong move could have diastrous consequences and ruin your career prospects. Although the Christmas Party is a time to be merry and have a few drinks, it’s important not to go overboard. Your liver and your head won’t thank you for it the following day. Another important thing to remember is the impact of Social Media. Somebody somewhere in the room will be recording what’s going on. So if you think you’re Shakin’ Stevens or Mariah Carey, there will be plenty of evidence to either back up your claim or disprove it out of hand. The 2016 European Week of Sport and Physical Activity was celebrated across Ireland from September 10-18. The aim of the event was to promote sport and physical activity across Europe. The Week was for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. With a focus on grassroots initiatives, it is hoped that will inspire Europeans to #BeActive on a regular basis and create opportunities in peopleâ€™s everyday lives to exercise more. As an annual event, the European Week of Sport will inspire all kinds of creative and exciting events and activities in different countries. A number of events took place locally including the Donabate Parkrun at Newbridge Demesne.

This yearâ€™s Great Dublin Bike Ride proved to be a big success with a number of local cycling enthusiasts among the 5,000 who took part. The event, held on September 11, passed through a number of areas in Fingal. Fingal County Council, along with other local authorities were the event stakeholders and with Sport Ireland, Dublin City Council and Healthy Ireland, brought this major event to north

county Dublin. The first route (60km) passed through Baldoyle, Portmarnock, Malahide, and Swords before returning to Dublin city. The second route (100km) took in parts of the 60km route with the additional areas of Ballyboughal, Naul and Garristown. This was the flagship event in Ireland for the European Week of Sport, September 10-18.

The local club also picked up their League Trophy on September 17. The club would like to congratulate Captain Greg Lewis and his teammates on winning both the League and Cup double.

Fastest Feet

Officials from Lusk, Skerries and Balbriggan worked hard to set up the course, which was run on a particularly challenging area on the field below the castle, making the most of the steep gradients for which Ardgillan is renowned. For several younger athletes this was their first ever cross-country race. They all ran brilliantly and finished with smiles on their faces. Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse later on, so the older children had the added challenge of wet conditions to contend with, but they all ran fantastically and did the club proud. While several Lusk athletes placed near the front in their races and won extra points for the top 20, all those who participated have got off to a great start with 10 points towards the league competition. Well done to all.

We had a super turnout for Lusk’s Fastest Feet event. Lusk National School hall was full of seven and eight-year-olds from Lusk and surrounding areas all vying to beat the Dublin record for Firefly’s fastest feet over a flying 10-metre sprint. Once all the children had had a turn it was up to the final three girls and boys to really go for it. There was great excitement when Conor McGuirk ran 1.62 to become joint leader for Dublin in the boys’ competition. Then Eimear McBride ran an amazing 1.60 to become the girls’ and overall leader for Dublin. Very well done to all who took part and thank you to ‘Believe and Achieve/Firefly’ for putting on the event in Lusk. The national finals will be held in December, so watch this space.

It’s that time of year again. But we don’t have to wait until October 31 to sink our teeth into some ‘Fangtastic’ foods. Try out these WICKED ideas to ‘creep’ the fun into every bloody meal!

GHOSTBUSTERS PEASY POTATO Cook and mash potatoes with a drop of milk. Cook peas. Keep a few for eyes aside and blitz the rest in a blender. Add a few drops of water to make a thick green paste. Melt in some cheddar cheese to make tasty cheezy peas. Spoon a puddle of the blended peas onto a plate. Assemble a tablespoon of potato into a mountain shape and place on top of the green pea slop! Add two peas as eyes onto the potato stacks.

SPOOKY ‘SANDWITCH’ SNAKE: Chop a cheese string into even sized round chunks. Place cherr y tomatoes in between cheese chunks. Chop top and tail off cucumber and use as the head and tail of snake. Place a pea on top of a piece of sweetcorn and use cream cheese/hummus to make them stick to each other and to the cucumber head as eyes.
