It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and we’ll very shortly be heading into autumn.

The Ireland team did us proud at the European Championships in France but now we’re deep into the GAA season and the big crowds are flocking to Croke Park to see who will lift the Sam Maguire Cup. And speaking of big numbers, we learned something recently that we suspected for a long time.

According to the Census figures, Fingal is officially the fastest growing county in Ireland with a population of more than 296,000.

In the latest issue of Lusk Local we will have reaction to that story, as well as keeping you up to date with what else is going on in your area, including articles and photos on local community events, sporting achievements and other local success stories.

Remember Us members enjoy summer camps

The Remember Us Special Needs charity summer camp is up and running and members are busy.

The Balbriggan-based group is running a six-week camp (four days and one night per week).

As you will see from the activities/outings they will be up and down the country and also local.

Some of the trips organised include Clara Lara, Newbridge Farm, high jinks at Victorian Escapades in Mullingar, Sonartie Nature Day, Laytown, Activity Nation (wall climbing, archery, glass sledging, team games) in Ardgillan and Causeys Experience (outside Kells).

Over 150 members are participating in the camp, some opting to participate every day for the six weeks and others choosing the days they are available.

The summer months can be long for a young person with a disability and their families but Remember Us fills those long days for them.

No matter what the disability, all are welcome to take part in the events in a safe and secure environment.

Remember us provides a unique club for its members and their families across North County Dublin.

Families say it is a “lifeline” for them as a family.

Members aged 4 to 12 have their parent carer assist them on the camp, teenage and adult members are assisted by the group’s amazing volunteers.

Remember Us would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers for giving up so much of their time to support its members; and also its CE and Tus Placements Matt, Eoghan, Martina and Igor. Without the volunteers and CE/TUS they would not be able to run the events.

Remember us is very family orientated. Siblings are welcome to attend and the parents that have attended so far are really enjoying the days out.

Boy in the tower

Short Story: By Rachel Nowluck Most dreams I have are usually forgotten very quickly, except one I had during my childhood. I don’t know why it has stayed in my mind, but the details of it never faded away.

The dream I had as a child would probably still scare me a little if I had it now although nothing bad actually happened in it.

When I was young a group of us used to walk through the grounds of the Round Tower in Lusk to go to Kelly Park. The tower was huge and the graves around it gave me the creeps.

In my dream a few of us were walking through it as usual. It was in the evening time and it was dark. The tower was lit up and as we talked I looked up to the top of the tower. At first I thought that I was seeing things so I looked away.

When I looked back up I saw the same thing, a boy was staring down at us. I don’t recall if I screamed or not or if anyone else had looked up as well.

I only remember everyone shouting and running away.

I was rooted to the spot staring at this curly headed boy who didn’t look happy about us being there at all.

I recall that he was shouting something down at us but I know that I didn’t hear what he said. I stood there for what felt like ages after everyone else was gone.

As I looked up at the boy he jumped off the top of the tower and was heading straight for me.

I woke up before he reached the ground. For years after I was afraid to look up as I walked through the grounds of the tower.

Now when I am passing by (in my car) I look at the tower and wonder about the boy. Was he giving out to us for disturbing him, or was he asking us to wait for him so he could have some company?

I realise it was just a dream. However, I can’t help but wonder what would have happened had I not woken up so soon.

They say the dead can’t hurt us and perhaps the boy in the tower is still there, waiting for his chance to jump down and spend some time with children just like him.

Kids’ activities for the summer holidays

By Siobhan White With another There is plenty for the children month of summer to do in the summer. school holidays ahead, we thought you might like some ideas for activities to do with the little ones, especially free activities because summer time can get very expensive with days out and endless trips to the shops!

Painting seashells: This may sound really simple but it’s actually brilliant. We take some paper cups to beach and get the kids to fill them up with shells. We then get the children to wash and dry the shells at home in the garden (unless it’s raining and then we come inside and lay down newspaper). And then comes the fun part of painting them.

We encourage designs, like ladybird colours or Ireland flag colours etc. so it takes them ages to paint them. Once done, we put in a colourful glass and either pop in the bathroom for decoration or give to a relative as a gift. The Grannies love it!

Garden games: We set them up in the garden with games like swingball, bowls, egg and spoon. This entertains them for a good while on a warm day.

We love getting them to do Simon says and they each get a turn at being Simon.

Baking/cooking: We sent our children on a kids’ cookery course at Jill’s Kitchen last summer and since then, they have much more interest in cooking so we let them help chop and peel veg for dinner. Kids love to be involved so let them help – it will give them skills for when they’re older as

On a rainy day, baking a batch of cupcakes is a great way to entertain them cheaply. They can all get involved in mixing and spooning the cakes. And then, give them icing and decorations and let them get creative with the toppings.

Treasure hunt: We set up a treasure hunt in the back garden (or if it’s raining, in the house). Getting them to read clues and figuring them out is great fun.

Movie night: We get the kids to help make popcorn and we do ‘family movie night’. We’ve been watching classics like ET, Goonies, Dumb & Dumber and the kids love that.

Cleaning: Yep, I get my children to help clean the car and wash the windows and vacuum the house. This is how they earn pocket money and you’ll find, they don’t mind as much if they know they’re getting something from it!

Vegetable patch: We get the kids to help us plant flowers in the garden. They love to have taken part in planting something when watching it grow. We are planning a veggie patch soon too – this should take up lots of time.

Hairdressing: With three daughters, there is a lot of hairdressing in our house. The girls do each other’s hair and my hair and sometimes their Daddy’s hair! It’s good for rainy days.

There are loads of days out that you need to pay for but we would say, watch out for competitions and special offers in the newspapers etc. Also, Tesco clubcard vouchers are great for getting discounts on days out with children.

Sad day as local Montessori School closes

By Majella Biddulph It was a sad day when a local Montessori School closed its doors in June.

Pals and Buddies, based in Lusk, had looked after children from the ages of two and a half to 10-years-old since September 2011.

We would like to thank all of the parents who entrusted their children to our care over the years. It was a pleasure to see them grow and develop in their time spent with us.

We wish all our past children the very best in their future education. Keep up the hard work and be good to all your friends in your new school.

Congratulations to Lusk Tidy Towns Committee

Congratulations are due to the hard working team of the Lusk Tidy Town Committee, the business people and the community of Lusk who have presented the village in the best possible light for 2016. This is even despite the poor summer weather!

Thanks are also due to Fingal County Council for their support throughout the year.

Have you noticed the windows of Katie’s old shop painted and displayed by Lusk Scouts? Well done to all of them and their leaders.

Judging continues for this year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition, the results of which will be announced in September.

Chairperson Pat Kelly and her hardworking team brought great pride to the village last September when they won a bronze medal.

The team is hoping to build on that this time around by garnering enough points to win a silver or even a gold medal in their category.

Ms Kelly has urged local people to keep up the good work and keep Lusk Tidy.

Rush hour at library for children’s author

SP McArdle, author of ‘The Red Letter Day’

An award-winning journalist and travel writer who has turned over a new leaf writing magic history adventures is coming to Rush Library on August 4 at 3pm.

SP McArdle’s quirky book, ‘The Red-Letter Day’, which features a 1916 finale – is already getting lots of praise, including from the Sunday Independent’s literary editor, Madeleine Keane.

‘The Red-Letter Day’ will thoroughly entertain boys and girls aged eight to 12 as it races from 9th century Book of Kells times to a rousing GPO finale on Proclamation Day in April 1916.

After stepping into a magic suitcase to kickstart her adventure, heroine Jenny must find two mysterious souvenirs – and touch a ‘freedom document’ from history in order to get home again. But how will she do it?

During the quest there’s non-action across the centuries as Jenny and her witty wordsmith guide O’Flahertie get chased by a giant, spy on a crazy writers’ debate and land in a gaol, before finding themselves slap-gang in the Easter Rising.

At Rush Library author SP McArdle will read from her new book and answer writing questions. She’ll also launch a book’s colouring competition with a unique prize.

SP McArdle, who visited Balbriggan Library on July 13 for a reading of her book, was brought up in Northern Ireland and now lives in Dublin.

She has over 20 years’ experience in newspapers (writing and production) and has been a travel writer for over a decade.

She has reviewed books for national newspapers since 2001 and was Literary Editor of the Evening Herald from 2001-2005. She also pens short stories and poems, and currently has a play under consideration by RTE Radio Drama.

Madeleine Keane, Literary Editor at the Sunday Independent, described the book as ‘An energetic, engaging romp through key events of Irish history in the company of some of our illustrious, fascinating forebears.

Imaginative, inventive, educational and great, great fun.’

Great start for Foróige Lusk Youth Club The Foróige Lusk Youth Club, established in November 2015, finished up its first year with a very enjoyable fundraising Bake Sale in the Carnegie Library Community Hall.

The club would like to sincerely thank everybody who came out to support this event and the wonderful people who donated the delicious baked goods.

They also want to thank businesses in the locality and beyond who kindly donated prizes for a raffle and Lusk Community Council for generously providing them with the use of the hall for this event.

It is great that the local community is rallying around to support the club in getting it off the ground.

Foróige Lusk Youth Club is still growing and would welcome new members, aged 12+ and attending secondary school.

They would also like to hear from anyone who is willing to help as a volunteer leader in the club.

The club will be re-convening on the second Friday in September in the school hall of the Rush and Lusk Educate Together Primary School on Rathmore Road.

Foróige is Ireland’s foremost youth organisation and has been in existence for over 60 years. It

aims to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the development of society.

Fingal is Ireland’s fastest growing county

If you live Fingal, you’re not alone. In fact, there are nearly 300,000 of us residing in this beautiful county of ours.

The preliminary results from the 2016 Census, show that Fingal has a population of 296,214, an increase of 22,223 since 2011.

Fingal is Ireland’s fastest growing county with a 94 per cent growth in the population in 25 years.

The county has seen its population grow by 8.1 per cent in the last five years. It has almost doubled in the past 25 years, rising from 152,766 in 1991 to 296,214 in 2016. The population is made up of 145,209 males and 151,005 females.

Fingal is the second largest of the four Dublin Local Authorities and Fingal County Council has the third biggest local authority catchment area in the country.

Fingal also contains four of the fastest growing electoral divisions in the State (BlanchardstownBlakestown, The Ward, Balbriggan Rural and Blanchardstown-Abbotstown) with growth rates of up to 27.4 per cent.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) report also shows that Fingal has the second lowest vacancy rate in the State, with a 19 per cent reduction in the number of vacant dwellings since 2011.

Reid said the figures present both a challenge and an opportunity to Fingal.

“Fingal County Council has been planning on the basis of similar population projections and we are currently in the middle of the review of our County Development Plan 2017-2023 which will provide a framework for the development of the county and its population in the medium-term.

“However, what the census figures do indicate is the need for sustained investment in our public services, such as transport, schools and other infrastructure to support a significant and rapid increase in our population.”

Mr Reid said Fingal County Council is actively supporting economic development in the county.

“There are three elements to our approach,” he said.

“We support the county’s SMEs through our Local Enterprise Office. We’re working to support our indigenous companies, such as in the agri-food sector and we work with others to attract multi-national industries to the county.

“With its young, well-educated and expanding population, Fingal has the potential to increase its share of such investment and to be further seen as an attractive location for business to invest.”

Mr Reid added: “We very much see the figures as a positive for the long-term economic wellbeing of the county.”

Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler said the increased population figures demonstrate the attractiveness of Fingal on many different levels and as a council.

“We will be doing everything we can to ensure that it continues to be the best place to live, to raise a family, to work in, to do business in and to visit,” he said.

“We will also be working to ensure the delivery of major infrastructure projects such as Metro North in order to cater for the needs of our growing population.”

Fingal County Council will be further analysing the preliminary data from the CSO and its potential implications for future Council policies.

It will also be working with all public service providers to ensure that the county’s infrastructure and provision of essential services meets the needs of such a population.

Fingal has one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the State. There is a great mix of rural and urban communities, with 53 per cent of the county zoned for agricultural use.

I.T. LEVEL 3 &SOCIAL MEDIA COURSE We currently offer two IT courses, the first an introductory IT Level 3 course, equipping job-seekers with the skills to confidently use MS Office, as well as fill in and send online applications and CVs. some very experienced runners and finished fourth in her heat with three making it to the final.

Next we had Kyle McNally in the javelin who was well below his best with the conditions. He lost out on a final place also, to some of the best throwing on display.

Finally, Kate McKenna took part in a rain soaked shot putt. In her first finals also, she fought really hard for a final place but came up just short but in the difficult conditions threw close to her very best.

Congratulations to everyone on your participation. You earned your place at an All Ireland and will be back better than ever again.

Tesco Blue Token Community Fund Dublin Marathon Medal

Lusk AC are out in force clocking up the miles for their Dublin City Marathon training.

We train throughout the week with the club and also on a Sunday morning which is open to all runners. The meeting point is Lusk National School at 8am. Please feel free to join us or contact us at LuskACPro@gmail.com.

This year’s Dublin Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 30, a departure from the usual Bank Holiday Monday.

Lusk AC were delighted to accept a cheque from Tesco Rush recently. We were thrilled to have been included in their Blue Token Community Fund.

All money goes directly towards equipment for the club. Thank you!

All Ireland Track & Field Championship For five exceptional Lusk AC athletes it was their first ever individual finals on Day 1 of the All Ireland Track and Field Championships in Tullamore.

Realistically for them a medal was out of the question. However a good performance was well within them.

It was a very windy day and two events that suffer a lot with these conditions are javelin and hurdles. Aiveen Byrne and Leah Riley took part in the Turbo javelin and were very unlucky to miss out on a final place by just centimetres. The experience in the windy conditions will stand to them over the next few years.

EXTREMEly brilliant performances from Gary Reindhardt and Stephen Burke

This was Stephen’s second Ironman. Congratulations to him and all his fellow team mates in Fingal TRI on this amazing result.

Gary Reinhardt is a close friend of Lusk AC and an EOI Marathon member. Over the weekend of June 25/26, he took part in the Energia Irish Championship 24-hour race around a 1.7k loop of Victoria Park in Belfast.

During this time he ran 201.4km (125.2miles) non stop and claimed 11th place in a field of some of Ireland’s top ultra marathon athletes.

This was an amazing achievement. Congratulations to Gary and all the EOI team.

Stephen Burke travelled to Galway and completed the Galway Ironman event. This event involves a sea swim followed by a 180km cycle and finishing up with a full marathon.

Busy period for Junsa Taekwondo members

July proved to be another busy month for members of Lusk-based sports club, Junsa Taekwondo.

Members were involved in club grading while Conor Deery took part in a competition in Luxembourg and narrowly missed out on a medal in a very tough draw.

Conor managed to reach the quarter finals and the club is very proud of him.

Meanwhile, Junsa Taekwondo would like to say a huge thanks to Lusk Local for their support and coverage in recent months.

This support included Lusk Local sponsoring lovely t-shirts for club members (see photos). The Junsa students have been wearing their new Lusk Local t-shirts with pride.

This is a club that is really going places in the Olympic Taekwondo world, and is providing a great sporting outlet for people in the Lusk community.

Homemade Beef Burgers

Method Ingredients

Place crackers in a ziplock bag and crush to crumbs.

Shape approx 10-15 medium size burgers and cover on a plate in the fridge until ready to cook or shallow fry immediately at a high heat to seal on both sides for about 3-5min. Then continue to fry at a medium to low heat for a further 10min or until cooked through.

Sunflower Oil to fry.

10 cream crackers 1kg mince 1 tsp black pepper 1&1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp mustard powder 4 tbsp ketchup

Place all ingredients in a bowl and combine well.

Perfect on a bun or place in an oven dish with gravy and onions, cover with tinfoil and bake in the oven for 20min at 200 degrees and serve with mash and peas for a tasty alternative.

Tip: place remaining uncooked burgers in a ziplock freezer bag divided by baking or parchment paper and freeze for another night’s dinner. Just defrost the night before needed in the fridge. Always Make sure burgers are fully defrosted before cooking.

New Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé on route Proof of Mercedes-Benz’s determination to overtake its rivals and increase its global presence is seen in the launch of yet another new model – this time a coupé-styled version of their all-new GLC, the mid-size SUV that launched in Ireland last December.

Not due here until early September, the new GLC Coupé (pictured) opens up more new ground for Mercedes-Benz, taking its place alongside the GLC – their first ever mid-range SUV in right-hand drive– whilst expanding the portfolio of models built on the C-Class platform - namely the C-Class saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet.

Following a route already taken by the GLE Coupé – introduced as a sporty edition of the new GLE, the new CLC Coupé is said by Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland, to be a “niche model that will appeal to those seeking an even more sporty version of the GLC itself ”.

From reaction received from dealers, Allen expects it to capture the interest “of those who rate style just as highly as substance”.

Just a few short centimetres longer and lower than the GLC, the new Coupé is strikingly similar to it in terms of its outer appearance, save for its sloping roofline, short rear overhang and

single-louvre grille with star inset and sparkling diamond-finished backing panel. A discreetlypositioned rear underguard reflects its SUV heritage.

Aerodynamically, the new Coupé leads its segment with a 0.31 Cd value. Putting it amongst the best-in-class also - whilst helping to restrict fuel consumption - is a body weight of just 1,710kgs, made possible through an intelligent use of aluminium and a mix of high to ultra-high strength steels.
