The sun shone brilliantly on the Lusk Parade and it was great to see so many locals out and about with their children enjoying the day. Well done to the many organisers and community groups who took part in this very special year.

Community Council launches Lusk 1916 Memorial Fund

PHOTOS: COURTESY OF LUSK COMMUNITY COUNCIL Lusk Community Council launched its fundraising campaign on St Patrick’s Day for the erection of a 1916 memorial dedicated to the men and women of Lusk and Fingal who participated in the Easter 1916 Rising. Following months of work on this project, the Community Council is planning to have a construction contractor on site within weeks.

A range of options are available for individuals and businesses to support this landmark project.

The Community Council’s target is to raise €30,000 to help part fund the memorial.

Lusk played a key role in the Fingal 5th Battalion during the Easter Rising and this provided the backdrop to the 2016 Lusk St Patrick’s Day Parade.

The Community Council installed large banners along the route of the parade highlighting the role played by Charles Weston, Dr Richard Hayes and Thomas Ashe.

Lusk looked magnificent and huge crowds turned out to view the parade.

The Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society marched in the Lusk St Patrick’s Day Parade for the first time to commemorate the centenary of the Rising.

Lusk Community Council thanked the Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society for making the Lusk Parade very special with their attendance.

Meanwhile, the Community Council succeeded in ‘Greening’ the Round Towers of Lusk to commemorate both St Patrick’s Day and the Centenary of the Easter Rising.

The Community Council thanked the Lighting Section of Fingal County Council and their lighting contractors for their assistance in making this happen. The reaction to the ‘Greening’ of the towers has been brilliant.

Congratulations are due to three Lusk Community College Students who performed exceptionally well at the Fingal Student Enterprise Awards held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown.

Valeria Tsedryk, Hannah Farrelly and Rachel O’Friel came runner-up in the Junior category for their project entitled ‘Jewellery Tree’.

Everyone at the college would like to congratulate the girls for all their hard work.

The Student Enterprise Programme is organised annually by Local Enterprise Offices (LEO) and is Ireland’s biggest enterprise competition for students, with over 16,000 students taking part every year. In the Fingal region over 2,000 students participate each year, making it the largest initiative of its kind in Ireland.

The programme encourages students to learn real life skills associated with running a real business including teamwork, managing production and finances, developing a sales and marketing campaign and liaising with customers, judges and the media.

In addition, the programme encourages students to consider becoming entrepreneurs in the future.

The Student Enterprise Programme takes place from September-April.

A variety of workshops are held in participating schools during the course of the programme.

Lusk Guide Unit continues to blossom

I was a brigin when I was five-years-old. My aunt Ann ran the group in Lusk. Then with one thing and another, lack of leaders, the group stopped running.

My mam Theresa became a cub leader when Lusk Scout Unit opened its doors to females. I became a cub, scout and then cub leader. Over time my mam left and then I left to go off travelling. Everything went on hold for a few years while I had four children, three girls and one boy.

In 2012 I started to think about setting up the Girl Guides in Lusk because I wanted my girls to experience the fun and camaraderie of a being in a group like that.

My own daughter Chloe was very shy in a group and I knew there was no way I would get her to join scouts with boys so I started to enquire with Catholic Guides of Ireland (CGI) what would I have to do to set up the group. I started to liaise with different members of CGI and started to get wheels in motion.

section caters for girls age 7-10 years. They take part in games, activities and crafts. They earn badges of interest to display on their uniforms, recognition for their achievements. They have taken part in hikes, day trips, sleepovers and an annual indoor camp. Our Brigin section currently has 31 girls and five leaders.

In Septmber 2015 I decided to start the next section, Guides for girls age 10 upwards. Now we are a Guide unit with a Brigin section and a Guide section. There can also be a Cygnet section age 5-7 and Rangers section age 15-18, which we don’t have yet. Our Guide section has 12 girls and two leaders.

We have completed some interest badges this year including their makeup badge which they earned at our Pyjama Party night. We are hoping to start camping this year in tents and also take part in an indoor Guide National Camp in November.

Our Guide Leaders are myself and Maria Carney. Our Brigin leaders are Sinead Conroy, Nicola Savage, Fiona McNally, Glenda Thompson and Karenlee White. I am Unit leader and section leader of Guides, Sinead is section leader of Brigins. All our leaders are volunteers and give up their time for free each week for the group and at other times during the year for training course, child protection and first aid etc.

As always we ask if any female, age 18 plus, would like to get involved in our group, as a leader or a helper please contact myself or Sinead through our facebook page - Lusk Guide Unit.

The unit needs fun, friendly women who enjoy working with children. It is such a rewarding thing to see girls build confidence, make friends and have an interest that will hopefully stay with them for many years.

I went every week for a year to Balbriggan Brigins and brought my two older girls with me, Summer and Chloe. I got to know the guiders down there and how a group runs and I would have a go at planning etc.

Next we had to find a venue, I checked with all local halls and premises to rent and eventually Lusk National School allowed me to start the group in the hall. The school principal Mr Cumiskey, the board of management and the caretakers have been amazing in their support of our group.

So before school finished for the summer in 2013, myself and some ladies from the CGI went into Lusk National School and went class to class to talk to girls age 7-10 about who we were and what we would be doing. We got great interest from the girls, mostly due to the the fact that it was going to be a boy free zone!

In September 2013 we held a registration night in the school and parents came to fill out forms and pay registration fees. Before we knew it we had 30 girls on the books. The group went from strength to strength. The Brigins 6

Local gardai are special guests at Montessori Bambi’s Land Montessori School is a pre-school setting based in Lusk. Its motto is: ‘Play, Learn and Grow Together’.

The children at the Montessori were delighted to welcome special guests, Garda Kate and Garda Dave, from Balbriggan Garda Station, in March.

Everyone at the Montessori would like to thank the local guards for visiting; a very enjoyable day was had by all!

The emergence of Pipe Bands

•continued from last month’s edition In the 1800s, with the formation of the Scottish regiments of the British Army, lone pipers were assigned to signal reveille and parade.

Groups of pipers were later introduced on regimental marches to help maintain marching tempo.

While drummers had been used in the military from a much earlier period, to beat out commands, they were now added to the piping group to aid the troops keep in-step on the rough road surfaces of the day. And so from the 1850s, Pipe Bands began to emerge.

Originally the pipe bands were confined to the Scottish regiments of the British Army, but about thirty years later civilian pipe bands were being formed.

As with any group setting out to achieve a common objective, there has to be a leader, and in this regard the lead or head-piper of the group was given the title Pipe-Major, a title that is still used today in all pipe bands. The Pipe-Major is usually assisted by a Pipe-Sergeant. The drum corps of the ensemble is lead by the drum-sergeant.

The popularity of the bagpipes, as we know the instrument today, began to reappear in Ireland in the early 1900s, influenced to some extent by the Gaelic and nationalistic interest and perhaps spurred on by Irishmen returning from service in the British Army.

In the early 1900s pipe band competitions were established. An initial rule for bands to compete was to have a minimum of eight pipers and maximum of 12.

Throughout the 1900s Pipe Bands continued to be formed in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland outside of the traditional military arena.

We know, of course, that the Black Raven Pipe Band was formed in Lusk in 1910. The band continues today to provide piping and drumming instruction in the locality and beginners are always welcome.

Numerous pipe band competitions are held annually throughout Ireland, Scotland, Australia, America, Canada and many other locations throughout the world.

There will be a pipe band competition held in Lusk on Saturday May 7.

The first ever pipe band competition in Lusk was held in 1960. The venue for that event was Clinton’s field, nowadays that field is Orlynn Park (see image).

The World Championships are held every August in Glasgow with in excess of 200 pipe bands taking part, and many Irish Pipe Bands regularly achieve the highest honours at this event.

The annual All-Ireland Pipe Band Championships are held on the first Saturday of July.

Council presents castle findings at seminar

Fingal County Council recently presented the first results from its community archaeology programme at Swords Castle – ‘Swords Castle: Digging History’.

A range of experts presented findings from the month long dig which took place in August and September 2015.

Opening the seminar to a packed audience, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor, said: “It’s wonderful to see new information about the history of Swords Castle coming from our community dig last year.

“The enthusiasm underlines the great success of this initiative and the importance of the castle for the people of Swords and Fingal generally.”

Speakers included archaeologist Christine Baker who designed and led ‘Swords Castle: Digging History’. Christine commended the input of over

100 volunteers in the success of the project.

A highlight was the finding of two medieval floor tiles, which indicates the high-status of Swords Castle as a residence of the Archbishop of Dublin.

Other finds from the excavation included over 6,000 fragments of animal and fish bone, which shows that the castle was an important centre for food preparation.

The food theme was also reflected in the presentation by Dr Meriel McClatchie who analysed seeds and grains from the site.

Meriel emphasised the quantity of this material recovered which suggests that wheat and other crops were being brought to the castle from the surrounding rich agricultural lands and processed in large quantities.

This is not surprising because, as an Archbishop’s residence, the castle was the administrative headquarters for much of the commercial and social activity in the town and surrounding countryside.

Archaeologist Siobhan Duffy revealed many of the small finds from the site which included an interesting collection of clay pipes.

Pipes dated from the late 17th or early 18th century right up to the late 19th century from a variety of manufacturers in Dublin and beyond.

Siobhan highlighted a fragment from a very small clay pipe which she suggested was made for children to blow bubbles!

Dr Linda Lynch then discussed human remains from the site and how archaeologists use these finds to give us valuable information about how people lived and died in medieval Swords.

Finally, county architect Fionnuala May discussed the council’s future plans for the castle and emphasised the importance of the community excavation in adding to our knowledge of the site and assisting in the future development of the castle.

New Lusk Post Office gets stamp of approval

It’s all change for An Post in Lusk where the local post office recently took up a prime location with a revamped office.

Lusk Post Office is now located at Supervalu, Station Road. The new office was formally ‘switched in’ to the national post office network linking it to more than 1,130 other post offices around the country.

Local resident Joe Dennis, the longest serving customer of Lusk Post Office, was guest of honour at the formal opening of the new premises.

Postmistress Linda Neary oversaw the construction of the new premises.

A feature of the office is a state-of-the-art counter which includes a number of features which make it more usable for all customers especially the mobility impaired.

The counter was designed by An Post for use in all its offices in conjunction with the Irish Wheelchair Association.

Ms Neary said the office provides a much improved facility for local customers in a prime location.

“I’m delighted with the new office and customers like the spacious new location,” she said.

Lusk Post Office is the latest of a number of post office upgrades and relocations supported by An Post throughout the country in the last two years.

It is open six days a week, including until 1pm on Saturdays.

Parents launch Lusk Community College campaign The parents of students at Lusk Community College, through a sub-committee of the Parents’ Association, have launched a campaign to get the second and final phase of the school building completed.

The current building was designed to cater for 350 students. However, with 380 students, the school is already overcrowded and with the 2016 intake, this number is set to increase to 530.

The overcrowding is already putting a huge strain on students, staff and resources at the school.

By means of a formal letter to the Minister for Education and Skills, which was copied to the Fingal constituency General Election candidates in February, as well as an online petition on myuplift. ie (my.uplift.ie/petitions/ finish-our-school-1), the parents highlighted the consequences of delaying the completion of the building as follows: • Compromising of the health and safety of the students and staff.

• Increased requirement for prefabs which contribute to disruption to daily routines, increased costs in the short-term, reduced space in school grounds for sport and leisure and possible issues with disabled access.

• High density of students congregating in the single communal area, with no scope for different spaces for junior and senior students and a lack of seating at lunchtime.

• Insufficient classrooms to cater for specialised subjects. For example, in the Department of Education subject inspection of Science and

Biology published on January 14, 2016 it states: “Given the high practical content of the Junior Certificate Science syllabus, one laboratory is insufficient to provide all seventeen science classes timetabled at the time of the evaluation.“ There will be more than 17 science classes in 2016-2017.

• Inappropriate use of space due to timetabling difficulties posed by insufficient number of standard classrooms. For example, 30 pupil classes are taught in rooms intended for specialised subjects with smaller groupings such as Woodwork and classes being taught in the open communal area next to the school reception area.

• Lack of other school facilities including: library, ASD Unit, Sports facilities and changing facilities.

• Lack of provision of subjects such as technology and metalwork.

• Creating a bad impression within the community to the point where local families are again sending their children to schools elsewhere.

Lusk and the surrounding localities have waited long enough to be able to have their young people educated locally and not to have to go on long commutes in order to attend secondary school.

The parents want the Department to stop prevaricating and finish the school building without any further delay.

They are appealing to everyone in the community to support their campaign by signing the online petition and contacting the local political representatives.

Remember Us recently received the keys to its new premises at Balbriggan Retail Park and held a special evening to mark the occasion and thank patrons, sponsors and everyone else associated with the ambitious project.

“If everyone chips in, truly magical things can happen. We held an open day recently for local business, fundraising partners, TDs, councillors, families and volunteers, to showcase our new base and launched Phase 2 of our fundraising campaign - to fit it out.

“We started two years ago with a target of €600k and to date have raised €400k. We still have to fundraise another €200k to get it fitted out.”

When completed, the premises will comprise a sports hall, a sensory room, which is vitally important for members who have autism, a games room, which will be developed into a youth café for teen and adult members; activity rooms, to run various programmes and set up a support group for parents of newly diagnosed children with special needs and a parent/toddler group; and an office, storage and kitchen.

Fearless event inspires local businesses

This year’s Fingal Enterprise Week was a huge success.

March proved to be a hectic month for all those involved in Fingal Enterprise Week 2016.

During an intense week of events, hundreds of business owner/managers and aspiring entrepreneurs learned about business success and how to achieve it.

One of the highlights of this year’s event was ‘Fearless’, which was hosted

by RTE’s Keelin Shanley and took place at the Riasc Centre, Swords.

The audience heard from a host of successful entrepreneurs about their journeys, the successes, challenges and rewards of running a business.

Fingal at the National Enterprise Awards competition, have recently set up businesses with the support of Fingal Local Enterprise Office (LEO), and took part in a Q&A, chaired by Bobby Kerr of Dragons’ Den fame.

Towards the end of the evening, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor presented InvizBox Ltd, the winning business, with a cheque for €5,000, sponsored by AIB Bank.

Fingal has an excellent track record at the National Enterprise Awards, winning the overall award twice since 2005 and featuring in the final nationally on numerous occasions, most recently with Keogh’s Crisps who scooped the Best Start-Up in Ireland award in 2013.

Speaking at the FEARLESS event, chief executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid highlighted the importance of supporting local enterprise.

“Each of the entrepreneurs we heard from this evening demonstrated that they have an overwhelming desire and a determination to create their own careers and create their own destiny.

“And while they do that they will be creating what we really need in this country, employment and wealth.

“We need to recognise and celebrate this entrepreneurial spirit in order to ensure that we cultivate a successful business community.”

Head of Enterprise in Fingal, Oisin Geoghegan, said he was delighted to see so many in attendance.

“We have had well over 1,000 participants so far engaging with Local Enterprise.

“I’m delighted that so many of our business owner/managers and aspiring entrepreneurs have come along this evening to ‘Fearless’.”

Asked why the title was selected, Mr Geoghegan responded: “We are not suggesting that no one who sets up a new business feels fear. Of course they do! “Setting up a new business always involves an element of risk. But the thing about entrepreneurs is that while they feel the fear, they go right ahead and do it anyway. “Entrepreneurs take risks and set aside their fears. That is something that we need to encourage, recognise and celebrate.”

Drogheda Arts Festival programme announced

The 12th Drogheda Arts Festival, which will take place from April 25 to May 2, is developed especially by a committed festival programme team from Drogheda and the Boyne Valley.

The first festival of the summer swings into action with a diverse programme across all of the arts which brings in critically acclaimed local and international artists.

There is a particular emphasis on family and participation as Drogheda welcomes young and old into its historic streets and buildings for new experiences, serious engagement, fun and relaxation.

The centenary of the Easter 1916 Rising is important to this year’s festival, with a number of programme elements reflecting, exploring, and reimagining ideas around it, including an exhibition, new theatre work for the stage, and for the park, and a public interview with a visionary of our time.

Council marks Seachtain na Gaeilge with series of events

Fingal County Council hosted an Oíche Sóisialta – an informal social evening in the Atrium, County Hall Swords - to mark the beginning of the Seachtain na Gaeilge festival.

The evening featured traditional music from the excellent Sean McElwain and Donal McCague and beautiful singing, as Gaeilge, from Deirdre Hurley.

Both Fingal staff and Irish language enthusiasts from the county attended the event and they were happy to join in by singing and dancing on the night.

Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor welcomed everyone, as Gaeilge.

“I am delighted to welcome the members of the Fingal Irish language community to County Hall, and well done on all your work promoting Irish in Fingal.”

Other events organised by Fingal County Council for Seachtain na Gaeilge included a series of Bilingual talks by Seosamh Ó Maolalaí on the Fingal Campaign, Easter 1916 in Balbriggan Library and on Peig Sayers and Thomas Ashe in Baldoyle Library. There was also

a two-day event, Deireadh Seachtaine na Gaeilge, in Swords Library which featured a lecture on 1916 from Padraig O Snodaigh and poetry readings including Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, and drumming and singing workshops for children and poetry readings.

Fingal County Council libraries facilitate Irish speakers all year round with weekly conversation groups in Garristown, Donabate, Balbriggan and Malahide Libraries, and many other Irish language events.

Seachtain na Gaeilge is an international Irish language festival and one of the biggest celebrations of our native language and culture.

It takes place every year in Ireland and in many other countries.

Council to provide funding for summer projects

Local groups can look forward to the suummer after Fingal County Council’s recent announcement that it is to provide funding for a number of projects.

A total of €70,000 will go to various groups for their summer projects.

Last year a total of 37 groups, including five new groups, almost 3,500 children and young

people availed of the council’s Summer Project Funding, and this year it wants to increase this number.

The grant, for funding of up to €2,000 can be applied for by community and project groups.

With all summer projects, the emphasis is placed on encouraging community involvement and development.

Mayor of Fingal County Council David O’Connor said the Community Division of the Council sees this funding programme as a way of supporting the community sector in the context of the overall work the council does especially at a time when resources are becoming more hard-fought over.

Country Crest Recipes

EASY

Serves 4 Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

Beef and Vegetable Skewers

80ml olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 80ml lime juice 1Ž2 tsp chilli flakes 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 tbsp Chili Powder 1 tsp salt 1Ž2 tsp black pepper 900g Country Crest beef sirloin or beef round, cut into 3cm cubes 1 x 500g Country Crest Microwaveable Steam Pack Potatoes 3 peppers (one each of red, green and yellow/orange), cut into 3cm cubes 1 large red onion, cut into cubes

Method

1. Stir together the first eight ingredients until combined.

2. Place the beef cubes into a small dish and pour over the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour.

3. Shortly before removing the beef, cook the Country Crest potatoes in the microwave for seven minutes (the potatoes should not be completely cooked through). When cool enough to handle, slice the potatoes in half 4. Thread the beef, peppers, onion and potatoes onto metal skewers in alternating patterns. Drizzle over a bit of oil until coated.

Animal Matters

Puppy Socialising Start young. As soon as your new puppy joins the family it’s time to get him/her socialising with other dogs in the house and all family members.

It’s fine to socialise your new puppy with any dogs in the house once all the dogs are up to date on their vaccinations and worming treatment. So this is something to do before the new addition arrives. Stay with the puppy for the first one or two times they meet your dogs to make sure they have no aggression towards the new member of the family. Once they begin playing and look comfortable around each other then they are fine to leave alone, but only then.

Be positive. Always stay positive when socialising and training your puppy. Your puppy will be happy if you are happy.

For example when your puppy meets another dog, don’t react by suddenly pulling your puppy away. This will startle your puppy and make him/her think meeting other dogs is a bad experience. Instead stay calm approaching the other dog, talk to both dogs and praise both dogs when they meet.

Let them smell each other. This is a very important part of being a dog, exploring their surroundings and greeting other dogs.

As much as possible. I understand this isn’t possible until they have had their second injection, but up to that point as much play at home with all family and other pets is possible.

Then once they have their second injection a week later they are allowed out on walks and allowed socialise with other dogs.

This is the best time to start going to to dog parks, puppy parties and other areas where your puppy can meet as many dogs as they can, all differrent shapes and sizes as well is important Puppy Parties. Most veterinary clinics run puppy parties (please contact your local veterinary clinic for more information).

These are classes where you can bring your puppy, once they have had their puppy injections, to meet other puppies and for each owner to ask vet nurses any questions about training or veterinary advise as well.

These classes are usually 1-2 hours long. Again all veterinary clinics are different so contact your local vets and ask the nurse about them.

A short story by Lusk local Rachel Nowluck FOCUSED ON YOU

Sitting on her black leather couch, Colleen opened her photo album. It was the first present she had received when her daughter Hannah was born. Hard to believe in was thirty years since that day. She opened it and once again read the inscription that had been so beautifully written...

‘To my darling wife, thank you for giving me our baby girl. May we fill this album with treasured memories as we watch her bloom and grow’.

The first photo was the scan Colleen had at sixteen weeks. She had wanted to know the sex of the baby, but Raymond told her not to bother asking. He insisted it was a girl.

Raymond was an amateur photographer. From the moment his wife told him she was pregnant, he took photos of everything. Very often Colleen 24 LUSK LOCAL-APRIL

wanted to tell him to get his camera out of her face. But before she could, her husband would smile at her and say he didn’t want to miss a second. Hannah was a natural. From the day she was born, the camera loved her as much as her parents.

Colleen had a press full of photo albums, but this was the one the extra special moments went into. Hannah’s first smile (even though she tried to explain to Raymond that it was wind induced).

The first time she sat up and her first step. She had photos of Hannah on her first day at school, her Communion day, her Confirmation day and her first day in secondary school. Running her fingers over the still memories always brought tears to her eyes. If only it was as easy to go back in time, as it was to turn the pages of her album.

The picture of Hannah in her girl guides’ uniform made Colleen smile. A memory of cookie boxes and an empty purse. Raymond filled the kitchen with cookies, so Hannah could win a pair of roller skates for selling the most.

When Hannah was a year old, Raymond entered her into a Bonnie Baby competition.

She won and was given a trophy, a certificate and a voucher for fifty pound. Raymond framed the certificate and the money, refusing to spend it. He said it would be Hannah’s choice when she grew up. He was so proud of his daughter that he began entering her photos into various competitions. Her prizes were stored in a glass cabinet, that was placed in their sitting room for all to see. Hannah was their only child and she was loved by all who met her.

At seventeen and fresh out if school, Hannah was offered a modelling contract in Paris. She was going to be on the cover of a fashion magazine called Femme and model clothes by the famous designer Pierre Louis. Their daughter spent a year travelling. She went to Paris, India, Rome, Spain and Morocco. Although she had become a jetsetter she never failed to ring home every night.

Colleen and Raymond would sit by the phone and fight over who would answer it. Small as she was, Colleen always won.

When Hannah returned home she was a shadow of her former self. Colleen expressed her concern for her daughter, but Hannah blamed it on her busy schedule. “Not much time for food or rest when your travelling from one place to another” she replied. Raymond shared his wife’s concern, but he told Colleen that their daughter just needed some time to adjust and a few home cooked meals. He knew she needed more than that, but his daughter had to realise it first.

Growing up Hannah loved looking through the photo albums. She loved looking at the money in the frame, always telling Colleen that she would never spend it. It was going to be given to her daughter instead. Since she came home Colleen noticed that her daughter never even looked at it once. Hannah was unsettled, hardly slept and ate like a bird. Colleen felt that someone else had taken her daughter’s place. When Raymond asked why she kept touching her nose and sniffing.

Hannah replied with an excuse about having a cold. Her parents didn’t believe her for long.

The late night parties and early morning rows followed.

Colleen tried to talk to Hannah, but she got defensive. “God Mom, lay off will ya. I”m not a baby anymore”.

“Maybe not” Colleen replied to the slammed door. “But you’ll always be my baby”. Raymond tried the strict parent approach, but Hannah stood wide eyed and face-to-face with him. “Get a life Dad. I can do what I like”.

“Get a life, get a life! Don’t you realise Hannah, you are my life. You’ve always been my life, our life”.

“Here we go again Dad, get the violins’ out. I never asked to be an only child, did I? You and Mom should have had more kids. Then maybe I would have had a normal childhood. You never asked me how I felt about anything. You just took my picture and never gave me a choice.

The only reason I went away was so I could be myself, without both of you looking over my shoulder. My daily calls were only made cos my agent told me I had to. He said you would kill him if I didn’t”. Raymond and Colleen were left open mouthed. “When did you change from my angel , into this devil before us? I don’t know you anmore,” Raymond said, looking lost and confused.

“You never did,” Hannah shouted back. “Just leave me alone.”

By the time Hannah turned nineteen, the atmosphere in the house had become unbearable.

She packed up and left one morning, without saying goodbye. She didn’t take anything out of the glass cabinet, not even her framed note.

Colleen and Raymond thought and prayed that it was so she could come back for it in the future.

They lived with hope and memories.

Years passed without any contact between them. They had reported their daughter missing in the beginning. But when the police heard how she was before she left, they weren’t very helpful.

For a long time after Hannah left, Colleen prayed that her daughter would call. She jumped each time the bell rang and when the postman arrived, she was always waiting at the gate. Every year on her birthday, Colleen and Raymond spent the day together. They bought a cake, lit the candles and made a wish. They wished Hannah a happy birthday and held each other tight. She had

Council announces Artists Support Scheme Fingal County Council has announced details of its 2016 Artists Support Scheme.

This strand of funding allows professional artists to avail of up to €4,000 of an award towards travel/professional development opportunities, a residency, or towards the development of work.

The objective of the scheme is to support individual professional artists from Fingal to develop their artistic practice.

The award seeks to provide artists with the time and resources to think, research, reflect and engage with their artistic practice.

changed, but her parents still loved her. God had given her to them for a reason. Each night they prayed, that he would send her back to them for the same one.

Raymond stopped taking photographs. He worked in the local supermarket. He became the store supervisor, but each night he came home more unhappy than the last. He would sit at the kitchen table, place his head in his hands and cry.

Colleen comforted her husband, but never tried to stop his tears. How could she! It was in his arms late at night, when her tears flowed. They blamed themselves, but never each other. Had they know how Hannah would have ended up, they never would have entered her into a single competition.

She was so beautiful, they just wanted to share her with the world. But because of it they didn’t even have her for themselves anymore.

Standing in the doorway, Raymond watched his wife. She was always so fragile looking on the outside, but he knew how strong she really was.

Her hair wasn’t as bright anymore and her face was now the home to fine lines. But she was still his China doll. He waited until she was finished looking through the photographs before he spoke.

“Is it time for cake now?” he said, trying to smile.

Colleen loved her husband’s patience. He gave her the space to relive the moments that were forever captured before her. Together they grieved for the moments they never got to see. As always, Raymond lit the candles. They held each other’s hands and made their wishes.

The ring of the doorbell came as a surprise.

Raymond left his wife sitting and went to answer it. Colleen heard the door open, then silence. She held her breath as it closed again. Standing up, she called out to Raymond. The sitting room door

opened and her legs gave way. As she stared at Raymond, tears filled her eyes and her voice was lost.

“Yes love, it’s really her”. After so many years of not knowing where Hannah was, her daughter was finally standing in front of her. Colleen stayed sitting, as she looked from Raymond to Hannah and back again. Her daughter sat gently by her side and looked at the birthday cake. Colleen reached out and cupped her daughter’s face in her hands. She looked into her eyes. They were the same emerald green as her own.

“I’m sorry Mom. I got lost for a while. Can I come home now?”.

“You never left us,” was all she could reply.

There would be plenty of time for questions and answers later. Mistakes had been made and moments were gone forever. But with their daughter back, none of it mattered. Raymond’s arms wrapped around the two women in his life.

The years of separation melted away. In the warm embrace of her parents, Hannah became a little girl once more.

Raymond found his passion for photography again. He quit his job, remortgaged their house and bought a studio. It was named Hannah’s Creations. After all, she had been the reason he loved being behind the camera so much. Photos of families soon filled the studio.

Hannah wrote a book about her life called ‘Out Of Focus’. She hoped it would help young girls interested in modelling. If she guided even one girl in the right direction, then her lost years had not gone in vain. Colleen became herself once more. She fussed over her daughter, smiled and said: “focused on you as always.”

Tomas Brezing – ‘Please Be Home before Dark’ The award is open to practising artists at all stages in their professional careers working in music, visual art, drama, literature and dance.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must have been born, have studied, or currently reside in the Fingal administrative area.

Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid said he is delighted to announce this funding scheme for Fingal artists to develop their professional art practice.

“In 2015, the council awarded 28 bursaries to artists through this scheme and remains

committed to supporting the arts in Fingal,” he said.

The funding is for projects/initiatives which will take place between June 1 and December 31. The closing date for receipt of applications is April 29, 2016.

Latest news from Lusk Athletic Club National Indoor Juvenile Championships

Some of the Lusk girls who performed brilliantly in Athlone. medal in the Under 16 Boys’ event.

Adam McNally took home a bronze in the U17 Boys and Bernard Hollands taking home a silver in the U19 Boys’ pole vault - a great result for the pole vaulters.

Then Kirsty Seaton and Grace Codd took part in the Girls’ Under 13 and Under 15 Girls’ 60 metre hurdles respectively.

The Lusk athletes were wonderful and they can all be very proud of their achievements in getting to the National Championships.

It was wonderful to see the Lusk AC vest at so many events. In total, there were 12 athletes who took part in 16 events and every age group from Under 12 to Under 19 was covered over seven events.

The club certainly appreciated all the support from the stands when everyone took to their events.

Lusk AC is very proud of all its athletes who competed and to have taken home one gold, two silver and one bronze, and had six more make it into finals.

Three of Lusk AC’s big talents who gave great performances at the National Indoor Juvenile Championships.

March saw Lusk AC take on the National Indoor Championships in Athlone.

Even though it was the biggest field ever to qualify for the events, all the athletes looked as if they had attended many times despite it being the first for most.

It kicked off with Kate McKenna in the Under 13 Girls’ shot putt. DJ Reily (Under 14 Boys’ high jump) and Leah Reily (Under 12 Girls’ high Jump) followed.

Oìsìn McEvoy (Under 15 Boys’ shot putt), Grace McKenna (Under 14 Girls’ 1000m walk) followed while Sarah Derham took part in the Under 18 Girls’ long jump, with a short break before taking on the pole pault.

Competing in the U15 Girls were Grace Codd and Èabha McNally while Sarah Derham competed in the Under 18 Girls and took home a silver medal.

The following morning, Leah Reily and her brother DJ took part in the Under 12 Girls’ shot putt and the Under 14 Boys’ shot putt respectively.

Lusk EOI Marathon event The Lusk EOI Marathon event took place at the end of February in Lusk.

There was a 10K, half marathon and full marathon race. Lusk AC had one of the largest turnouts in its history take part.

It was a wonderful day from start to finish with many of the athletes recording Persons Bests (PB).

Lusk AC would like to thank EOI Marathons for the very well organised and enjoyable day. Well done guys and see you in September.

Liam completes 100th Parkrun

Liam Halpin celebrated his 100th parkrun with club members at Ardgillan Castle parkrun on a beautiful March morning.

Liam has run the majority of his parkruns in Ardgillan with a number in Donabate and Malahide.

He is the first Lusk AC member to achieve this amazing milestone. Well done Liam.

Conor stars in the Netherlands The sun shine for the St Patrick’s Day parade in Lusk which Junsa Taekwondo was honoured to be a part of.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the club to show the people of Lusk what WTF Olympic Taekwondo is all about.

Students from Skerries, Rush , Donabate , Swords and Lusk had a wonderful day, and to top it off Junsa took home the Lusk Community Council trophy.

In early March Junsa Taekwondo, along with student Conor Deery, took part in one of Europe’s biggest and most prestigious competitions in Eindhoven, Netherlands, the Dutch Open 2016 G1 ranking event.

Conor started his first match against his Danish opponent well with a final winning score of 11-6.

His next opponent was a Great Britain national team player who has a string of gold medals under his belt.

Junsa entered the match a little apprehensive but Conor saw his opportunities and took them, and the match finished in a 9-1 victory to the Lusk local.

The next match was the semi-final against national team Turkey and Junsa’s confidence was high.

It was a very technical game and the score was very evenly matched. In the end the Turkish player won but only just with a score line of 7-5, leaving Conor with a bronze medal.

With a competition involving competitors from around the world and Olympians, Conor and Junsa Taekwondo can hold their own with the best in Europe.

Noticeboard & Parish News QUIZ NIGHT:

Rush and Lusk Educate Together will be holding a Quiz Night at Round Towers Lusk GAA Club on Friday, April 15. All proceeds will go towards funding the school’s Violin Project. Guest compere to be announced.

Music will be provided by DJ Joe late into the night. There will be a generous cash prize for the winning team with prizes for 2nd and 3rd runnersup. Each table consists of four people for €20.
