New Year resolutions: don’t you just love them. But the big question is: can we keep them? Resolutions aside, 2016 will be no ordinary year on our Emerald Isle as we celebrate the 1916 Rising centenary with thousands of events scheduled to take place all over the country. There will also be a general election which will dominate the first quarter of the year, while in sport, fans of Martin O’Neill’s boys are eagerly awaiting the European Championships in France in June. In the third issue of Lusk Local, we will be helping you to keep up with what is going on in your area with articles on local community, business and sporting groups and award successes. Aladdin production enthralls Lusk audience

Power Drama School held its biggest production to date recently at Lusk National School. In what is now becoming a local tradition in Lusk over 600 people turned out to see their fourth annual Christmas production. Their original adaptation of ‘Aladdin’ starred a cast of 69 children aged 5-16 in a full-length production. The stage of Lusk National School was transformed into an opulent Arabian Landscape. A 20-foot backdrop was commissioned and designed by hugely talented graphic designer Cathy Connor. Parents helped to dress the stage in beautiful purple and cerise satin which Power Drama School loaned to Lusk National School for their 4

Christmas concerts. The two-hour production entertained the audience from start to finish with young children in particular being left awestruck by the exciting action, choreography and music on stage. Senior citizens from Lusk Community Unit were invited guests at the show on the opening night and really enjoyed the performance. Loraine Power and Susan Kenny directed and choreographed the show respectively while Lynn Cassidy was musical director. The production included ‘One Jump Ahead’, ‘Prince Ali’ and a ‘Whole New World’ from the Disney animated musical with an adapted version of ‘Hard Knock Life’ from Annie, ‘Close Every Door’ from Jason & the Technicolour Dreamcoat

and modern songs such as ‘Uptown Funk’, ‘Footloose’, ‘Reach for the Stars’ and ‘Jai Ho’. The 5-6-year-olds gave a beautiful performance of Paul McCartney’s ‘We all stand Together’, while dressed in cute frog costumes. The production also had its own boyband who sang a medley of Westlife Songs. The whole cast were fantastic with the leads all giving the performance of their lives. Power Drama School’s productions are not-forprofit. They give students the opportunity to perform in public and to gain valuable skills in Performing Arts. They also provide local families with an opportunity to experience live theatre within their own community at a very affordable price.

More awards for Country Crest Farm Shop

The Country Crest Farm Shop, located at Jones Garden Centre, recently received SME Employer of the Year Corporate Responsibility Award at the Fingal Dublin Business Excellent & Corporate Responsibility Awards. This award was open to recognise any SME who was able to show how their CSR policies attract socially conscious employees who rate pride and fulfilment in the workplace as a priority. Entrants had to show how their values matched those of their employees providing the basis for continuous and effective employee engagement. The winner of this award had enabled staff to deliver an impressive number of CSR initiatives which have resulted in exceptional benefits both at home and abroad. At the same ceremony, Country Crest Farm Shop also won the Customer Service Retail Excellence Award – Independent Sector. This award, sponsored by North County Leader, was open to independent retailers in the Fingal region and designed to recognise a unique retail offering and exceptional service. Meanwhile, Ballymaguire Foods Lusk (part of Country Crest) won the Business Growth Excellence Awards. Bank of Ireland sponsored this award. This award was open to any business that has enjoyed significant growth over the last two years. Judges were keen to see evidence of growth in product, customers, market share achieved as a result of the implementation of robust growth strategy. Separately, County Crest has just come through a very busy Christmas period and is looking forward to a busy 2016. New Year full of promise for Remember Us

Members of Remember Us enjoyed a wide range of activities in 2015. A Balbriggan-based social group that caters for young people and adults with special needs from all over Fingal, including Lusk, has every reason to look forward to 2016. Remember Us had a busy and exciting 2015, which saw it move a big step closer to achieving its dream of acquring a new premises; organising a number of trips and events for its large membership; and also being nominated for awards in the community it serves. Remember Us’s membership grew to 230 families, impacting on approximately 700 people. Nora Roban, founder/coordinator or Remember Us, told Balbriggan Local: “As we are up and running just over 17 years, I always have the vision that we would need our own base, somewhere our members could call their own and house all our activities under one roof and also develop new services. In 2014 the time was then. “We embarked on a fundraising/marketing campaign, and over the past 18 months we have raised €336,000 to date. “This came about through sheer passion, determination and drive and seeing the benefits the organisation has brought to so many members and their families and what more it can bring when we have our own base. “This is enough to buy the property we have indentified which is in Balbriggan Retail Park and pay all fees associated with it and a portion to start the fit-out of same, which will cost circa €240,000.” Ms Roban said the new base, which is more than 7,000 sq ft in size, will have to be fitted out from scratch. When completed, the premises will comprise a sports hall’ a sensory room, which is vitally important for members who have autism, a games room, which will be developed into a youth café for teen and adult members; activity rooms, to run

Remember Us continues to grow its membership. various programmes and set up a support group for parents of newly diagnosed children with special needs and a parent/toddler group; and an office, storage and kitchen. “We will be looking for companies/business and the community in general to come on board and be part of this vital building for our very special members in the community,” said Ms Roban. You can help by becoming a patron, sponor a room, supply materials/services, make a donation or support fundraising events. “Remember us would love to hear from you,” said Ms Roban. “It would be a real feel-good factor each time you pass the building knowing that you helped us achieve it. “We currently have a two-pronged fundraising campaign going on, one for our new base and one

for the day-to-day running of programmes. “We get a small grant from the HSE towards the programmes and family respite and a small grant from Fingal County Council towards our summer programme. “While we get these small grants they only cover approximately half of the cost to run the programmes. We have one paid position. which is job shared, and the money for this position comes from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Some of that money also goes towards programmes. “None of the money we get from fundraising / donations goes towards paying the one member of staff; it goes directly towards putting on the programmes for our special members and towards our new base.”

Events provided in 2015 included: • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings each week, every Saturday and two Fridays of the month for four different age groups. Each age group was eligible to attend the clubs twice to three times per week. Activities included cookery, art & crafts, drama sports, dance outings and lots more. • An Easter camp • A six-week summer programme (four days and one night per week) • Four family respite breakaways where we offered the families a 2/3/4-night break. Families dined together each evening, kids’ clubs were organised and supervised by some of our CE/TUS placements, family disco evenings, family bingo evenings and themed evenings were also organised, Kids’ clubs in the mornings and some outings during the days were also available. Between 130 and 170 people accessed each break. • A parents’/Carers’ Respite Break also took place in September to the Limerick Strand Hotel. • Volunteer recruitment drive • Support and informational to families

Memorial to mark 1916 Rising centenary

Water Charges alert for homeowners

On the morning of Easter Monday, April 24th 1916 the Volunteers of Dublin Brigade Fifth Battalion (Fingal Battalion), under the command of Thomas Ashe, the school principal of Corduff National School, Lusk, commenced hostilities in Fingal by interrupting the rail line over Rogerstown Estuary, close to Lusk. This was the first event in their week-long campaign across Fingal which culminated in the successful engagement with British forces at Rath Cross, Ashbourne, in what became known as the Battle of Ashbourne. To commemorate the centenary of the participation of the men and women of Lusk and Fingal in the Easter 1916 Rising, Lusk Community Council has commissioned a memorial to be constructed on a site adjacent to the Carnegie Library in Lusk. The site was kindly denoted by Robert Hand. This project will form the centrepiece of the 1916 Centenary celebrations for Lusk.

A new statutory obligation to retain and pay unpaid water charges from proceeds of sale will commence when Section 48 of the Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015 comes into force in January 2016. The definition of ‘sale’ includes a voluntary transfer or a transfer for less than market value. The section provides that the owner of a dwelling proposing to sell that dwelling shall pay to Irish Water any charge in respect of the dwelling payable by the owner to Irish Water, including any such charge payable by the owner by virtue of Section 23A(4) of the 2013 Act (where the owner has failed to notify Irish Water of the name of the occupier of the dwelling). Charity event for Karl is a big success Local boy Karl Wyer

The family of a local boy who has Angelman Syndrome would like to thank all the people who organised and took part in a walk in Lusk to help their son. Karl Wyer, from Rush, was diagnosed with the condition when he was one. The 5km Santa Hat Walk for Karl started at Round Towers GAA Club and after a walk around the area, the participants finished back at the clubhouse. Karl’s family would like to say a huge thank you to Michelle Carton Gray and Philly Gray for putting so much hard work into organising the walk. They would also like to thank John Wilson - village store Lusk/Costcutters; Sabrina Murphy for helping in the GAA Club on the day; Willie Murphy for doing Santa; McKenna coaches Lusk for transporting marshals; Pete Devine for doing DJ; all the marshals on the day; Charlene Fogarty for the

amazing face painting; and all the walkers who participated in such bad weather conditions; and also the raffle prize givers. “You are all very kind and wonderful people and we would sincerely like to thank each and everyone of you from the bottom of our hearts,” said Karl’s parents. “Karl had an absolutely fantastic day. He loved meeting all the new people and enjoyed all the events on the day.” Karl’s family said that in terms of the ongoing support and medical attention that their son requires they know it’s not going to be an easy road ahead. “But with everything you have all done for him we cannot begin to explain the difference that you have made,” they said. “Karl is solely dependant on his mam and dad for all his medical needs. As a family with three other children to care for also, this is extremely physically challenging. “Karl’s health can deteriorate quickly and he can endure lengthy stays in hospital and also has a lot of frequent outpatient appointments which financially this is also very straining on the family which adds more stress to a very difficult situation. “Karl needs two people for his rigorous care regime as there is a huge amount of care needed on a daily basis. “As a family we want to make the best choices that we possibly can and have lots of happy memories and also look after our own health so we can continue to cope with all Karl’s needs.” Karl’s family added: “Without your support, kindness and great ideas we would not have ever been able to get this far. Words cannot express our gratitude to everyone.”

Lusk Tidy Towns looking forward to more success in 2016 Lusk Tidy Towns enjoyed a very successful 2015 and will be looking to make further improvements again this year. In Category E of the SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition, Lusk was awarded 293 points, six up on its 2014 total, and won a bronze medal for the first time. And in Fingal County Council’s Community Group of the Year Awards, Lusk Tidy Towns were 1st Runner-Up in the Community, Culture and Sports Division. These awards were recognition for the excellent work carried out by the team headed by chairperson Pat Kelly. At the end of the year, the group also launched its 2016 Annual Tidy Towns Christmas Card & Calendar at a function in Murray’s, the Top Shop, Lusk. Many congratulations to Lusk Tidy Towns and its supporters for all their work, from Lusk Local, and we are looking forward to reporting on more of your group’s exploits in 2016.

Slimming World Recipes Grilled Cajun-spiced chicken, wedges and corn on the cob... set to become a Friday night Food Optimising favourite. Who needs a takeaway when comfort food tastes this good...

Ingredients • • • • • •

4 chicken drumsticks, skinned 4 chicken thighs, skinned 900g large new potatoes, quartered into wedges 30g sachet Schwartz Flavourful Cajun Chicken Recipe Mix 8 mini corn on the cobs A handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped, to garnish

For the coleslaw:

• 200g summer cabbage, quartered, cored and shredded • 2 carrots, coarsley grated • Salt • 4 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise • 4 spring onions, finely shredded

Method 1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/180°Fan/Gas 6. Cut a few slits into the chicken drumsticks and thighs and put them in a large roasting tin with the wedges. Sprinkle over the Cajun seasoning and toss everything together. 2. Roast in the oven for 50 minutes, mixing occasionally. Add the corn cobs halfway through the cooking time. 3. For the coleslaw, put the cabbage in a colander. Pour over a kettle full of just-boiled water, letting it drain, to soften the cabbage slightly. Cool it quickly with cold water and let it drain again. 4. Add the carrot to the colander. Sprinkle over a good pinch of salt and mix well (this both seasons the veg and draws out some of the moisture). Leave to drain for 15 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and mix together well with the mayonnaise and shredded spring onions. 5. Divide the spicy chicken, potatoes and corn cobs between 4 plates, garnish with chopped flat-leaf parsley and serve with the coleslaw on the side.

Beef steak pot roast Sunday dinner, all in one style, with just one pot to wash! This easy slow cooker dish means your afternoon’s free for some well deserved R&R.

Ingredients • 4 x 250g thick lean beef steaks, all visible fat removed • 200g baby new potatoes • 200g baby carrots • 1 garlic bulb, cloves separated and peeled • 1 tbsp black peppercorns • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • 200ml boiling beef stock • 2 tbsp dried dill • Salt • Fresh chopped dill, to garnish

Method 1. Place the steaks, vegetables, garlic cloves, peppercorns, vinegar, stock and dill into the slow cooker and stir well. 2. Add salt to taste, cover and cook on LOW for 7-8 hours or until the meat is tender. 3. Serve sprinkled with chopped dill.

Ticks and fleas are not just a summer problem

Does your dog or cat go outside, either out the back garden or on a walk around the corner? Ticks and fleas don’t disappear in the winter months. They do decrease in population but your cat and dog still need to be protected against these microscopic parasites. What are ticks and fleas? They are what are known as Ectoparasites (parasites that live on the outside of a living host). There are specific ones for different animals. Both a cat and a god have their own species of tick. But the flea can live and survive on both your cat and dog. Both survive on the blood of your pet, and the tick can also give your pet certain diseases like Lyme disease. How do my pets get them? Ticks are contracted from bushes, trees, overgrown grass ecetera. Any green or hedging that your pet can fit under can be containing ticks and so if your pet goes near these they are at risk of getting a tick. Fleas are contracted by contact with other animals that have fleas or with bedding that have been used by an animal with fleas. Even just meeting another dog with fleas on a walk, your dog can get fleas from him. How can I prevent my pet from getting them? Prevention is better than treatment. From 6-8-weeks-old your dog and cat should start their preventative treatment. This consists of visiting your veterinarian 2-3 times a year and purchasing the tick and flea medication. Once you pet is treated with this medication at least twice a year then they are safe if a flea or tick comes in contact with them. If you think your pet might have either of these parasites or have not treated them in a long time then please contact your local veterinary clinic and speak to the nurse or vet about flea and tick preventatives.

Events at the Seamus Ennis Arts Centre this month The ever-popular Seamus Ennis Arts Centre in the Naul completed a fantastic month of entertainment thorughout December and is looking forward to another successfukl year. At the beginning of the year, those interested in taking up music can look forward to a wide range of classes on offer at the centre. At the recent Leinster Drumming Solo Championships Black Raven Drummer Cliodhna Ni Chorchobhair (11) came 1st in her very first competition. Clliodhna is a member of the local Black Raven Pipe Band. She

started her drumming career just over a year ago in the Black Raven School of Piping and drumming and has made amazing progress in such a short space of time. Her brother Tiernan also competed in the

At a recent area committee meeting of Fingal County Council, a local councillor raised a number issues pertaining to Lusk. Cllr Ken Farrell (Lab) asked the council for an up-to-date report on the taking-in-charge process of Chapel Farm, Lusk. Cllr Farrell also called for immediate arrangements to be made to have the playground at this location brought up to a safe standard. The council said: “The legal documentation in relation to the TakingIn-Charge of the open spaces within Chapel Farm Estate are currently being processed by the Law Department. “Arrangements are being made for the outstanding works including the playground repairs as soon as the estate is in the charge of the County Council.” Cllr Farrell also asked the council to make arrangements to have the ditch cleaned that runs from Kilhedge Lane, Lusk to Chapel Farm, Lusk. In its report the council said Kilhedge Lane in Lusk is cleaned of rubbish on a regular basis (weekly) and recent observations have indicated the ditch to be relatively litter free. “This location will also be examined to assess the requirement for possible ditch cleaning which may be needed to alleviate localised road flooding issues,” the council said. Meanwhile, Cllr Farrell also called on the council to make arrangements to have the roadway repaired at the junction of Barrack Road and Church View on the left hand side of the road coming from Dublin where the footpath ends. The council said the road repairs at the location referred to in the question have recently been carried out.

Lusk United launches fundraising calendar

Lusk United Under 8s are taking part in the Indoor Futsal League. In September 2015, Lusk United AFC decided that they were going to create the first ever club calendar for 2016 which would include pictures from all of its teams from this season. The calendars are on sale from the clubhouse and are priced at €10 each. The club would like to thank the calendar sponsor MMK Electrical Limited. All proceeds will go towards development of football within the club. It was the club’s main Christmas fundraiser as they opted against doing the traditional Christmas raffle. Meanwhile, the club’s hugely popular Kids’ Academy, for boys and girls aged 4-7 years, finished up at the end of November with an average attendance of 60 kids throughout 2015. This huge number resulted in the club having seven Under 8 teams this season all of which are currently taking part in the FAI/NDSL Futsal League in Gormanston College. The Futsal league runs for six weeks, three weeks before Christmas and three weeks in January. The club feels that these six weeks are hugely beneficial to the kids’ development, not only in football, but also outside of the game. Futsal is a fast paced game using a heavier ball than normal, which encourages kids to use lots of touches on the ball while also enhancing their decision making skills due to the fast nature of the game. Separately, Lusk United AFC have erected a book swap shelf in its clubhouse which is for all members. If anyone has any sports books, coaching books or biographies that they aren’t using anymore, they are asked to please bring them down to the clubhouse. All members are welcome to borrow a book from the club. 22 LUSK LOCAL-JANUARY

The children at Lusk National School are put through their paces. Martial arts is continuing to grow in popularity across the country and one particular club, based in Lusk, is doing its bit to raise the sport’s profile. Junsa Taekwondo recently brought this Olympic sport to Lusk National School as part of its physical education programme. As part of the national governing body for Olympic Taekwondo in Ireland, (Irish Taekwondo Union), Junsa has had many successes at national and international level.

With all his experience as club coach and national coach, Master Stuart Russell was delighted to bring the art of Taekwondo to the local school. Taekwondo is for everyone from age 4 to 40 and above. There are many elements of Taekwondo which suits a wide range of students and that’s what makes Olympic Taekwondo very special. Master Russell said he was was very impressed with the positive attitude from the students and

teachers at the school and would like to thank them for their great support. Mr Russell added that he was looking forward to working with Lusk National School in developing the sport in 2016. Come hurl with us Dublin camogie stars visit Lusk

The Under 8 Girls at Round Towers Lusk GHFC welcomed Dublin camogie stars Miriam and Laura Twomey to their club recently to lead the final training session in their ‘Come Hurl With Me’ programme. This six-week coaching programme, supported by funding from the Fingal Sports Office, is an initiative of the Camogie Association. The programme aims to increase the involvement of parents in underage coaching by supporting their child in learning the skills of the game. ‘Come Hurl With Me’ gives an opportunity

to parents who’ve never played the game, or who haven’t played in a long time, to learn the basic skills alongside their child, and to practice together. The Round Towers Lusk GHFC programme, was organised by husband and wife team, John and Elaine Pyper, whose three daughters were among the participants. Twenty-five girls, ranging in age from five to eight, took part in the programme with their partnering parents. Parents were presented with hurls at the final

session to continue practicing the skills at home. Sports Development Officer Caitríona Geraghty said: “It was a great opportunity for girls take part in a training session led by two Dublin camogie players from Naomh Mearnóg, Miriam and Laura Twomey. “The Fingal Sports Office is delighted to support such a programme to increase and encourage sports participation among girls.” For more information on Women in Sport Programmes, contact Caitríona Geraghty, Fingal Sports Development Officer, on 01-8906247.

Who’s The Boss A short story written by (Lusk Local) Rachel Plunkett Nowluck

Charlene Hill twirled in front of her full-length mirror. She smoothed down her perfectly fitted dress and admired how it showed off her curves. Catching a stray hair she carefully clipped it into the center of her bun. Not bad she thought to herself. Starting off her career in the fashion section of the magazine GLTS (Girls Love To Shop) had really paid off in the long run. "Are you ready yet?" her husband Mike asked as he hovered in the doorway. “Remind me again why we're going tonight," he said quietly. "As far as I recall you said Ted was an overweight, underachieved nobody who had the brains of a fish and the looks to match. You said he never should have become editor, as his ideas were expired just like him. Did I leave anything out?" he asked in an amused tone. "Mike you know I said those things about Ted when I was having a bad day. I didn't mean any of it. You know me." "I do, all too well" he mumbled. "That's why I know you meant every word of it.” "Sorry what did you say?" Charlene asked half-heartedly. "Oh nothing, as usual," he gasped. "Lets go then," she replied, marching past Mike and down the corridor. "We want to make an entrance before everyone leaves," she said over her shoulder. "Coming boss," Mike said gazing at the floor. He wondered if his wife heard anyone but herself. At the party Mike stood back as he watched his wife receive all the attention. After all she was clearly the most beautiful woman in the room. Her ambition was as big as her ego. Mike never knew if her colleagues admired her or feared her. She had changed over the years but he couldn't remember exactly when it happened. Charlene had joined the magazine straight after college. Mike had been hired two years previous as a reporter and had remained as one till date. It was her shyness that had attracted him. They started dating a month after she joined and he proposed to her in an article he wrote. Them days of simplicity were well and truly gone. After seven years of marriage he

wondered did his wife know him at all. She often accused him of having no ambition. He wasn't pushy enough and he would remain a reporter all his life. Charlene got a taste of success and her hunger for it grew. Mike knew she was wrong about him. His Father always told him timing is everything and for Mike they were words to live by. Charlene only saw the fashion side of the magazine, but Mike liked to report the more realistic parts of life. He reported the shopping disasters and the ones with bad customer service. For some it was boring but for Mike his section was important. He would not just listen to people on the phone complain about different shops, he would also reply to emails and a blog he has set up. If only Charlene wasn't so busy living in her bubble, he might have been able to share all this with her. She was also unaware that in his spare time he wrote books under the name of Sue Denim. As Mike stood alone at the bar, he heard a familiar giggle. He took a deep breath and turned. "Hi Mike," Candy giggled, well on her way. "Hi," Mike replied, doing his best not to look at the enormous pair of boobs that were trying to fight their way out of the top of her dress, bouncing as she giggled. Starting to get hot under the collar Mike looked around in the hope of escaping. His eyes met with a stare that said move away from her before I kill you. "Sorry Candy," Mike said in a hurry. "The boss needs a drink, better go". Ted got up to make his speech. The room filled with clapping and cheering. Mike sat down beside Charlene and the magazine photographer Todd. He was one of his wife's admirers but to Mike he was a creep. Under the stern gaze of his wife, Mike sunk into his chair. "Easy to tell who's the boss in your marriage," Todd whispered. Mike wanted to reply but the warning look from Charlene silenced him. Ted took the microphone in his hand and wiped the beads of sweat from his brow. He loosened his tie and cleared his throat. "Get on with it you fool." Charlene hissed through her smile. "Well I'd like to start off by thanking everyone for coming tonight. As I look around the room I feel sad. I'm gonna miss you all and I would like to thank you all for being by my side for so many wonderful years.” "Hurry up for Godsake," Charlene said, as she took a mouthful of wine. "Easy there," Mike whispered, smiling. "I don't think I'll be able to carry us both home". His wife didn't find his remark amusing. "Shut up" she replied. "Who said I'll be going home after the party anyway," Charlene hissed, as she sat on the edge of her seat. "So without further delay," Ted called out. "I would like to thank everyone once again, especially our assistant editor Charlene Hill. You've come such a long way in a very short space of time. You've been a valuable asset to the running of GLTS. I'll miss you the most.” Standing up, Charlene smiled at Ted. "On behalf of all of us here, may I say what a pleasure it has been working for you. We'll miss you terribly and wish you a happy and healthy retirement.” "Thank you Charlene, now all that's left for me to do is officially announce my successor and new Chief Editor.” Still standing, Charlene smiled. She had her thank you speech all prepared. The decision was up to Ted, but she knew that as assistant editor and the most qualified for the job it had to be her. She took a step forward. "Put your hands together for your new boss.. Mr Mike Hill.’ All eyes stared at Charlene as she stood open mouthed. Mike stood up to the applause of the crowd. He put his arm around his wife's waist and whispered in her ear. "Close your mouth dear you might swallow a fly.” Looking at Todd he winked. The smirk was well and truly wiped off his face. "What was that you were saying about me not being the boss," he asked, just before he took his thank you speech out of his pocket and walked up to the stage. LUSK LOCAL-JANUARY
