Great support for Breast Cancer Charity Walk

The walkers pictured during the Action Breast Cancer Charity Walk. THERE was a great show of community support in Lusk recently for an Action Breast Cancer Charity Walk. Centra Lusk and Breffini O’Donovan sponsored the event, and the distance for the walk was 5.5k. Kids, who were allowed to walk for free on the day, were given goodie bag and pink Breast Cancer Awareness vest. Adults made a minimum donation of €10, and received a pink vest, bottle of water and an energy bar. Over 250 people from Lusk registered on the day, and just over €2,850 was raised. Most people donated €20-€50. Also, a bake sale/tea and coffee event took place after the walk in Lusk Fitness, which also deserves a mention for its help and support. The main person behind the event was Nichola Donnelly who was diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and has since overcome every challenge that has been thrown at her. Nichola is an unbelievable woman and without her the success of the event would not have been possible.

Lusk locals open a little gem in Malahide

Max and Ramona decided to move to Lusk in 2005 where they settled and have been active members of the local community. They fell in love with the surroundings and the country style living, the best place to raise a family with lovely people and very a supportive community. Ramona works in a local preschool setting since for the last five years and Max has been working as a Head Chef in some of the best hotels and restaurants in North County Dublin. Since they met they both had a special attraction towards the north county, as Max always says: “Here is where the real Dubliner lives!” Max and Romana have now started a new venture by taking over a well established wine bar and restaurant in the heart of Malahide. ‘Chez Sara’ is a little gem, an old classic where they will bring their knowledge and experience making this venue the place to go for good food, for good wine and a relaxing atmosphere with a homely and family touch.

Exciting plans for Lusk Foróige Club

A new club has opened in Lusk, which will provide another important outlet for the area’s young people. Foróige is Ireland’s largest youth development organisation, working with over 50,000 young people annually. It provides opportunities for young people to join a club where they can try new things and gain valuable skills and talents that they may not ordinarily know they have. The Lusk Foróige club joins a network of over 600 similar clubs nationally. Foróige clubs are for people aged 12 and over, who are in secondary school. They provide a safe social space for

young people to meet up with their peers and get involved in a varied programme of activities, programmes and events. The club is run by a team of volunteer leaders from the local area who give of their time to ensure the club can operate. Once the clubs are established they are primarily run by the members. This is done by the election of a youth committee who will take the lead in coming up with ideas, planning and organising in the club. Foróige in Lusk have exciting plans for the new year and look forward to having an action packed and varied club, which will see them getting involved in lots of activities and attending many of the organisation’s interclub events in the months ahead. If you are interested in joining the club feel free to come along and see what it is all about. The club meets every Friday evening from 7.30pm-9pm in the Rush and Lusk Educate Together School Hall (to the rear of the main building). World Youth Day The Archdiocese of Dublin is offering people, aged 16-30, the opportunity to attend World Youth Day (WYD) in Krakow, Poland, in July 2016. The diocese is bringing two groups (16-18 year olds, and over 18s) to the event. Places are limited. Young adults (18+) are invited to sign up for a leadership course called ‘Anchor’. Exciting times ahead for Remember Us SUCCESS STORY: Pictured are members of the ‘Remember Us’ social group.

About Remember Us

Local group continues to grow in popularity THERE are times when you can become a victim of your own success. That’s certainly the case for Remember Us, a north county Dublin-based social group for young people and adults with special needs, their families and friends. Remember Us began in 1998 with 15 families but now has over 235 families registered and continues to grow in popularity. The group caters for children as young as fouryears-of-age through to adulthood, from North Fingal and surrounding areas including Lusk. Remember Us’s predicament is that it is currently providing an excellent service all from a small office in Balbriggan and a variety of halls which it rents out for its activities. However, the group now feels that as it has grown so too has the need for a permanent home for members. A massive fundraising drive is ongoing in Balbriggan and surrounding areas to help this popular group achieve its dream. Nora Roban, founder of Remember Us, says: “In order to facilitate us expanding and developing a wider range of activities we have identified a property that will give us a permanent presence in the community of Balbriggan. “The property is in Balbriggan Retail Park opposite Platinum Gym and PJ’s Playcentre. It is almost 7,000 sq.ft. and is shell and core. 10 LUSK LOCAL-DECEMBER

“We have been successful in fundraising the purchase price of this unit and we have now launched ‘Phase 2’ of our fundraising efforts to raise the €200k needed to fit it out to our needs. “While we will always need to fundraise for the running costs of the group we, through our ‘second prong’ fundraising drive, aim to raise the funds needed for the ‘fit out’ of the property.” To this end, Remember Us have linked in with local groups like the Lions Clubs in Malahide, Balbriggan and Swords, the Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal, a number of local Irish Countrywomen Association branches (ICA) and others who have agreed to host fundraising events for the group. “We have also linked in with a number of ‘fundraising partners’ such as the Wright Venue, Moriarty’s Supervalu, Balbriggan, Irish Centre for Cycling and Malahide Castle to name but a few,” says Ms Roban. “We have always been so well supported by the local community and we are extremely grateful for all the fantastic support we get. “As the big push is now on to raise the extra funds needed to fit-out our new home we are again seeking the support of the community to help us move in and become a permanent ‘fixture’ in Balbriggan.” Ms Roban adds: “As we have only one paid position, which is job-shared, as well as our two CE and two TUS workers we rely heavily on our fantastic volunteers. “They are amazing and we can’t thank them enough as without them there would be no ‘Club’.

Remember Us’s mission is to provide an integrated social environment for our young people/adults to learn, form friendships and above all have fun. The ‘Club’ also gives the members an opportunity to develop their social and life skills, improve their self-esteem and have a good quality of life. It aims to combat the feeling of isolation often felt by young people/adults with special needs and their families by helping them to integrate into the community. Through involvement in ‘The Club’ members have the opportunity to experience and participate in a variety of activities in the community. The PRIDE of Fingal Beautiful Ballyboughal wins top national award

Ballyboughal took one of the top prizes in the annual IPB Co-operation Ireland Pride of Place Awards, which were announced on November 14 at a glittering gala event in Ennis. Ballyboughal claimed the runner-up spot in the main competition in the category for neighbourhoods with populations of between 300 and 1,000 people. The Pride of Place Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of people who work tirelessly to create pride in their local area and a better place for local residents. Forty-three groups, ranging from those in small rural communities to groups in inner-city housing estates, took winning or runner-up positions in

the main and cities competitions. A further six groups received Special Awards, while one local authority received a special Council Award. Each year, practically every local authority on the island of Ireland nominate groups for doing exceptional work in their communities. This year 102 groups were nominated by their respective local authorities. A panel of highly experienced judges visited every nominated group and then selected the winners and runners up. Since the first Pride of Place competition 13 years ago, thousands of people have been recognised for the outstanding contribution they make to Irish

society. Speaking at the event, Ronan Foley, chief executive of sponsor, IPB Insurance, said: ”IPB Insurance is proud to be associated as title sponsors of the IPB Pride of Place Awards and more importantly what it represents. “I firmly believe that it is essential that we recognise communities and the thousands of volunteers across the island of Ireland that give of themselves selflessly every day. “As a mutual insurer that insures local authorities and their communities across the island of Ireland, these awards are an excellent fit.” Mr Foley said it was clear that working together and getting things done increases peoples’ pride in where they live and in turn helps build vibrant communities. “All those nominated epitomise the sense of community spirit that can be seen all across Ireland, with people committed to creating positive civic change in their respective communities,” he added. Tom Dowling, founder of the event and Chair of the Pride of Place Committee, said: ”Even after 13 years, I and the rest of the judges continue to be amazed at how communities from all over the island demonstrate their amazing capacity to care for the people in their communities and respect their heritage, culture and environment. “I also pay particular thanks to the local authorities all over the island of Ireland, Cooperation Ireland and IPB Insurance for their ongoing support for this unique community competition. ” Peter Sheridan, chief executive of Co-operation Ireland, said: “For Co-operation Ireland, the Pride of Place competition embodies the ethos of the organisation and it shows how working together ordinary people can make a real positive change on society. “I congratulate everyone who participated in year’s competition, but especially the winners.”

Navigating the housing market it will involve an increase on your existing rate, will still be very attractive. There are two potential restrictions to be aware of. Firstly, the new tracker rate will apply to the existing mortgage only, so if you wish to increase your borrowing, the additional amount will be at the standard rate. Secondly, the offer may only apply for a set time period, after which your entire outstanding balance will move to standard rates. Five to 10 years is the typical arrangement. You should talk to your bank or a financial broker for more information on your particular circumstances.

Who has the best interest rates? In last month’s issue of Lusk Local, we answered some questions about navigating the housing market. See blow the answers to some more questions.

What if I am self-employed, on contract, or recently started a new job? Banks have different criteria for these applicants. Some require self-employed applicants to produce three-year accounts. Others will only need two years. For applicants who have changed jobs, some banks require you to have at least 12 months in the new employment whilst others only need six, although all will require any probationary period to be successfully completed. It is important for these applicants to fully research the market to understand their best options.

What if I am in negative equity and want to trade up?

If you are affected by negative equity and wish to trade up special rules apply outside the standard guidelines. Each case will be assessed on its own merits with the various mortgage lenders applying different criteria. You should speak to your bank or a financial broker for advice on your individual circumstances.

Can I keep my Tracker Mortgage if I move house?

Tracker mortgages offer extremely good value for those who secured them prior to 2008. A tracker mortgage rate can be as low as 1% or less, whereas standard variable rates can be up to 4.5%. As a result many people have decided to postpone moving house in order to retain this valuable benefit. The good news is that, if you hold a tracker mortgage and want to move home, most banks will negotiate a new tracker arrangement with you, subject to lending criteria. Typically banks will offer a new tracker rate at a higher margin which, whilst

Whilst there are far fewer lenders remaining in the market since 2008, the number of mortgage options and various incentives can still be complicated and confusing. Local Authority mortgages are available to those who fail to meet the new Central Bank guidelines. Sole applicants earning less than €50,000 and joint applicants earning less than €75,000 can apply, subject to lending criteria. Applicants must show that they have received inadequate funding offers or refusals from at least two mortgage lenders before they can be considered for the scheme. You can apply for up to 92% funding, and the maximum purchase price is €220,000. Dancers put on a SHOWSTOPPING performance

Congratulations to all the children at AK Dance School who performed at the Axis Theatre, Ballymun, last month with their show â€˜Dance to the Beatâ€™. Children between six and 18, form the local areas of Lusk, Rush and the Naul, rehearsed hard for a number of months at the Carnegie Library Hall, led by their dance teacher Adrienne, in preparation for their newest and biggest show yet, and how it paid off ! Audience members at both the evening and matinee performances were treated to a wonderful tow hours of showstopping dance routines, spectacular costimes, great music and lots of energy and smiles. Congratulations to all the children who worked hard to put on such a fantastic show, and to all those behind the scenes who helped make this such a wonderful occasion for the children and for those watching in the theatre. Classes at the AK Dance School will resume at the Carnegie Hall on Saturday, January 9 and new members are most welcome.

Winter Wonderland with Sparkly Silver and Gold Thereâ€™s something magical about a winter wonderland image so why not recreate it on your dining table. Cover your table with a white tablecloth. Layer each place setting with a place mat/platter, then a plate and a bowl. Wrap the cutlery in napkins, and add champagne and wine glasses along with a personalised place card. Church candles or white tapered candles, sparkly t-light holders, silver and gold baubles in a hurricane lamp placed on a circular mirrored table platter will all add to the magic.

Don’t forget your pets at Christmas time Safety tips Try to place your Christmas tree in a corner where it can’t be easily knocked over and is kept secure. Don’t have ornaments, lights or tinsel hanging from the last few branches of the tree, so when your cat or dog walks near or under the tree, it’s the branches they are touching and not the expensive ornaments or dangerous lights and tinsel. If you have purchased, or are planning on purchasing a live Christmas tree, please be aware that the pine needles can be dangerous to our pets if ingested so keep them tidied up over the holidays. Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants are all poisonous to both cats and dogs, so if you are buying any of these to decorate your home with this year please keep out of reach to all four-legged family members. Routine is important for our pets to stay happy and healthy so just because the house is decorated and there are more family members around or shorter days, try to keep your pets’ routine the same. So feed at the normal time, go on walks at the normal time, same area and same amount of time and general day-to-day things that they are used to. Keep doing them.

Mince Pies

Method

1. Whisk the egg whites with the artificial sweetener in a clean, dry bowl until they stand in stiff peaks. 2. Beat the egg yolks with the nutmeg, orange zest and juice. Chop up the Christmas pudding and stir into the yolks with the fromage frais. 3. Carefully fold the beaten egg whites into the fromage frais mixture and spoon into a freezerproof container. 4. Freeze until nearly firm and frozen, then remove from the freezer and stir well. Replace in the freezer until frozen and firm. 5. Remove the ice cream from the freezer about 10-15 minutes before serving to allow it to soften slightly. Tip: Because of a very slight risk of salmonella, vulnerable people such as the elderly, babies and pregnant women should not eat raw eggs.

225g plain flour pinch of salt 110g margarine or butter Cold water, for mixing

For the filling:

• 16 level tbsp mincemeat • 1 level tbsp icing sugar for dusting

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Lightly spray some bun trays with low calorie cooking spray. 2. Make the pastry. Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl. Add the fat, cut up into little pieces. Gently rub it in with your fingertips. Add sufficient cold water to mix to a ball that leaves the sides of the bowl clean. Rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 3. Roll out the pastry thinly on a lightly floured surface. Cut out 32 rounds with a 7½cm fluted cutter. Use to line the prepared bun tins. 4. Divide the mincemeat between the pastry cases. Roll out the remaining pastry trimmings and make some little stars with a small star cutter. Use to decorate the tops of the tarts. 5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and lightly coloured. Cool on a wire rack and dust lightly with sifted icing sugar.

8 sheets of leaf gelatine 11.5g sachet of sugar-free raspberry jelly crystals 1cm piece of root ginger, peeled and grated 1 cinnamon stick 1 star anise 2 cloves 6 cardamom pods 100ml red wine 1 tsp sweetener Grated zest of 1 orange 400g mixed berries, thawed if frozen 400g low fat custard from a can or carton 500g fat free natural fromage frais 1 tsp vanilla bean extract 1 level tsp edible gold and silver decorations

1. Put the gelatine sheets into a bowl of cold water and leave for 10-12 minutes or until softened. 2. Meanwhile, stir the jelly crystals into 400ml of boiling water and set aside. 3. Place a saucepan over a low heat and add the ginger, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, cardamom pods, red wine, sweetener and orange zest. Heat until hot but not boiling. 4. Squeeze the excess water out of the gelatine sheets and put the sheets into a large bowl. 5. Strain the wine mixture through a sieve on to the gelatine sheets then add the jelly mixture, stir well and leave to cool. 6. Put the fruit into a large glass serving bowl and pour in enough of the cooled jelly mixture to come about two-thirds of the way up the side, leaving room for the custard and fromage frais (you can use any leftover jelly mixture to make individual jellies). Chill overnight. 7. Spoon the custard over the jelly, then whisk together the fromage frais and Vanilla and spoon on top. Scatter over the edible decorations to serve.

Lusk Athletic Club

celebrates 40th anniversary

Lusk Athletic Club had a very successful 40th anniversary celebration on November 7 at Lusk United’s clubhouse. The athletics club combined the event with a Fit4Life graduation. Over 120 guests enjoyed a great night’s entertainment of speeches, food, music and dancing. Club President Colm McNally commended the hardworking staff at the clubhouse and described it as a “super venue”. “We’d like to thank everyone who came along and made the night such a great success,” said Mr McNally. “It was wonderful to see the old club sharing their great memories and giving their blessing to the new committee as they take the new club forward. “While talking to members of the old club it was amazing how they experienced the same 26 LUSK LOCAL-DECEMBER

difficulties in 1975 as we do today in the day-today running of our club. “The message is the same today though as it was then - we only exist because of our members and are able to achieve success because of the help of our volunteers. “By providing a fully inclusive club we can influence the type of community we want here in Lusk.” Lusk AC would like to thank all the speakers on the night - Brian Maguire, Joe Hartford, Jackie Boardman and Seamus Flynn; and Maura Boardman for helping to cut the cake with Seamus Flynn. “We’d also like to thank our organising committee of Breda Collins, Nicole Hodson, Eamon McBride and Danny Farrell for all the hard work they did,” stated Mr McNally. “Apart from organising the night they had to

track down members of the old club and spent a lot of time uploading photos from past years. “There was a display of photos and newspaper articles from past years diligently put together by Eamon McBride, and were view on the large screens on the night. “These can now all be viewed on our Facebook page. Also on display were old trophies and club gear.” Mr McNally said it is always great to appreciate and thank former members. “It is time to look forward and develop our club to suit our community and make us an example for excellence in athletics in Ireland,” he added. “The planning for our 50th birthday has already started - we look forward to another great occasion.

Local GAA club does Lusk proud in 2015 ROUND Towers GAA Club members, players and mentors can reflect on a very good 2015 in terms of success on and off the pitch. Not only has the Lusk club added silverware to its trophy cabinet, but it has also witnessed a growth in membership and now has more teams than ever. And the popular north county Dublin club also received a major financial boost courtesy of a €150K award from the 2015 Sports Capital Grant Programme, which will go towards the development of a much-needed second pitch. The club is now in a great place and its large membership has every reason to look forward to 2016. The Adult 1st team won the Dublin Junior Championship for the third time in the club’s history, defeating Raheny in the final at Parnell Park. Their other two successes in this competition came in 1962 and 1992. Winning the league ensures that Round Towers will be back playing Intermediate football again after being relegated to the Junior ranks four years ago.

Round Towers GAA Club’s 1st team The team went the whole season not only unbeaten in Dublin, but also won every game. They had only one loss all year, which was in the preliminary round of the Leinster Championship when they lost away to the Carlow champions. They also won the Conlon Cup and the Junior-5 League for good measure. Meanwhile, the club’s 2nd team is involved in a play-off for promotion after also having had a decent season. The club’s minor team have done very well all season too. They lost their Division 3B league final in extra time to Thomas Ashe last month. Other juvenile teams have also done well and had league and cup success this year in football and hurling. Round Towers GAA Club also has a ladies’ teams at adult and underage level who are competitive in their leagues. This year saw the solidification of an adult hurling team, which is new to the club at adult level. They had a good season and placed competitively in their league. To celebrate the wonderful year, Round Towers GAA Club has announced that it will be holding a Dinner Dance in the City North Hotel on February 27. The club hasn’t had a Dinner Dance in approximately six years so many people might not be expecting it! The tickets are €60 each, which will include a four- course meal and plenty of entertainment on the night.

Junsa Taekwondo members perform very well in Latvia

SUCCESS: The Junsa Taekwondo team pictured at the European Junior Championships. Conor Deery, a member of Junsa Taekwondo, based in Lusk, competed in the -45kg division at the European Junior Championships, held recently in Latvia. Conor, under the watchful eye of Irish team coach Stuart Russell, fought on the first day of the tournament got off to an excellent start in his first round match, forcing his Ukranian opponent Mark Volyno to withdraw after a heavy contact. Conor proceeded to the quarter finals where he also faced a stern Spanish opponent in Joan

Jorquera Cala in another high paced action filled match. Conor went out in his match with major momentum and took a strong lead. As the match progressed to the end of the third two-minute round, a final kick from the Spaniard regained the lead 10 points to nine which proved to be the final score. This was Conor’s first major event as a Junior and he was one point away from the possibility of finishing on the podium, which at this level is a fantastic achievement.

Conor’s performance would not have been possible if he were not joined by his teammate and sparring partner, Jack Woolley, who returned home with a silver medal in the -55kg division after facing some serious competitors. The European General Assembly was also in the agenda in Latvia and was attended by ITU President & European Taekwondo Union committee member Martin Fleming. Master Fleming was also a member of the Competition Supervisory board for the Junior European event.
