There’s something about Jesika Mary! Lusk talent is one to watch
Jesika Mary is pursuing her dream.
By Rachel Robbins Lots of people have big dreams – few have the gumption to pursue them. Jessica Crowley falls easily into the latter category. Our very own homegrown talent, Lusk local Jessica – stage name Jesika Mary - is currently studying Creative Media production for Radio at Ballyfermot College of Further Education. An aspiring radio presenter, she is actively involved in the set-up of a community radio station – WTF (What’s The Frequency) Balbriggan. Jesika is passionate about music and has recently started on a Youtube venture, uploading videos of her performing in an effort to expand her audience. She is the whole package – beautiful, brave and brilliant. Inspired as a child by the musical presence in her own family – her father has his own band called Kris Kross, with whom he showcases his respective vocal and guitar skills – Jesika admires a wide variety of artists. She credits the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Sia, Florence and the Machine and Swedish House Mafia as inspiring her own creativity. She even lists Ireland’s own bouncing, denim-clad beauties ‘B*witched’ among her muses, naming the first song she ever learned on the guitar as the infamous ballad ‘Blame It On The Weatherman’. Initially nervous about putting herself out there at the mercy of the keyboard warriors that prowl social media, she was prompted to upload her first video at the urge of her friend Yvonne, also from Lusk, and has thanked her every day since. Yvonne herself has started her own business, called Charlie’s Cupcakes. The youth of Lusk certainly have a prominent future ahead of them and Jesika Mary definitely features among those who are ones to watch.

Delay in Lusk community sports facility questioned AT a recent area committee meeting of Fingal County Council, a local councillor raised a number issues pertaining to Lusk. Cllr Ken Farrell (Lab) asked the council for an up-to-date report on the roll-out for the provision of a community sports facility in Lusk, and questioned the delay on the project. In its report, the council said the Lusk Integrated facility was originally included in the 2013-2015 Capital Programme at an agreed cost of €896,313 including VAT and fees. “In early 2015 the school informed the community department that the project had gone to tender stage and that this stage would be completed at the end of March 2015,” the report read. “However, due to delays in the tender evaluation process a revised cost estimate in the amount of €1,108,326 (including VAT and fees) was not received until July 2015. “The council is committed to this project progressing and, having considered the revised estimate received in July, is prepared to fund this extra amount.” Separately, Cllr Farrell asked the chief executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid to make immediate arrangements to have a safety barrier erected at the exit of The Close, Orlynn Park, Lusk onto Station Road to ensure small children don’t run directly on to the busy Station Road. Mr Reid said arrangements have been made for the provision of a safety barrier at this location.”
Posters to help combat dog fouling demanded The scourge of dog fouling is a problem in many areas and Lusk-based councillor Ken Farrell (Lab) has raised the issue at council level. Cllr Farrell asked the council to make arrangements to have dog fouling posters erected at the corner of Orlynn Park, Lusk, along the Station Road towards the 50-bed HSE Unit?” The council said: “The litter warden will inspect the area around the corner of Orlynn Park, Lusk, along the Station Road towards the HSE Unit and erect dog fouling posters at suitable locations. Meanwhile, the council is considering landscaping two un-landscaped roundabouts on Rathmore Road, Lusk. Cllr Farrell asked Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid to make arrangements as a “priority” to have carpet roses planted on the roundabouts. Mr Reid said: “The landscaping of the remaining two un-landscaped roundabouts on the Rathmore Road, Lusk, will be listed for consideration in the 2016 works programme. “This programme of works is dependent on resources and finance being available.”

Council scoops occupational safety award
Fingal County Council claimed two awards at the event in Galway.
At the 24th Annual Occupational Safety Awards, which were held in Galway, Fingal County Council’s Human Resources (HR) team achieved the ‘Local Authority/Council Award’ in the Business Category Awards. In addition, Fingal County Council also achieved a ‘Consistent High Achiever Award’ for obtaining a distinction or higher in each of the last five years of entering the competition. The All-Ireland Occupational Safety Awards were established nationally in 1992 with 20 entries and have grown to become Ireland’s premier safety awards. The awards truly became an all-Ireland affair when the Northern Ireland Safety Group joined forces with the National Irish Safety Organisation in 1995. To date, over 1,900 entries have been received. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor, was very pleased with the announcement and sent his congratulations to the council’s staff “whose contribution to worker safety culminated in the success of achieving two awards.” “Well done to all,” he added. Chief executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said worker safety and health is of paramount importance to the council. “Combating the causes of workplace accidents, ensuring compliance with safety law and fostering the commitment to continual improvement of our safety management systems ensure not only worker safety and health but allow us to deliver a more effective service to our customers and citizens of Fingal,” said Mr Reid.
Local students attend mental health event
Fingal County Council’s Comhairle na nÓg held its AGM and Let’s Go Mental event in the grounds of Swords Castle on October 22. Chief executive of the council Paul Reid welcomed 100 plus students from over 20 schools around Fingal including Garreth O’Connor, Fingal’s representative on the National Executive, to the event which was introduced by chairperson Daria Jonkisz The AGM heard from members of the Comhairle on their two projects – developing wristbands promoting LGBT rights and carrying out a feasibility study to introduce First Aid in secondary schools. Suzanne Byrne from Youth Work Ireland spoke to the AGM about this year’s Dáil na nÓg. This event, which is only open to members of Comhairle na nÓg, will take place in Croke Park this month with a special emphasis on education.
The AGM was also asked to complete a questionnaire about the most important human rights to children and young people in Ireland. This feedback will be part of a report by the Department of Justice and Equality on how human rights are respected in Ireland. After lunch in Masterson’s Restaurant, the Let’s Go Mental event was launched by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor who thanked the members for their hard work in organising the “best Let’s Go Mental” event in the country. Let’s Go Mental is based on Headstrong’s concept of the Five-a-Day for Your Mental Health – Connect, Be Aware, Get Moving, Give and Get Involved. Students hugely enjoyed participating in the activities around these concepts at the event, including giant Jenga and Connect Four, Zumba classes, untangling themselves out of a human
knot and enjoyed peaceful mindfulness sessions in the newly renovated chapel at Swords Castle. Minister for Children and Youth Affairs James Reilly dropped in on the day to wish everyone well. He closed the day by reminding everyone present that these five concepts are not just for today but should be remembered at all times to promote positive mental health by all young people. Navigating the mortgage market What is the maximum amount I can borrow in relation to my income?
If you are considering buying your first home, or if it’s time to trade up or carry out some home improvements, ensuring that you choose the right mortgage can be a confusing and daunting task. Here we hope to answer some of the more frequently asked questions:
How much of a deposit will I need? The Central Bank introduced new guidelines at the beginning of 2015, with different rules applying to first time buyers and non-first time buyers, subject to lending criteria. The rules are quite simple for non-first time buyers, who can borrow up to 80% of the purchase price and must provide the balance of 20% themselves. So if you want to buy a property for €300,000, you must have a minimum deposit of €60,000 plus an allowance for fees and furnishings etc. The deposit may come from savings and/or the equity you have built up in your existing home. For first time buyers, a higher mortgage allowance is available. However, the rules are slightly more complicated and depend on whether the cost of the property is above or below €220,000. For properties costing up to €220,000, the maximum mortgage allowance for first time buyers is 90%. So if you wish to buy a property for €200,000, you can borrow up to €180,000. You will therefore need a deposit of €20,000 to complete the purchase, plus an additional amount to cover fees and furnishings etc. For properties costing more than €220,000 the maximum allowance is 90% to that level, plus 80% on the amount above that. So for example, if you want to purchase a property for €250,000, your maximum borrowing is as follows: The first €220,000 @ 90% = €198,000 The balance of €30,000 @ 80% = €24,000 Total mortgage allowance = €222,000 You will, therefore, need a deposit of €28,000 in this instance, plus an allowance for fees and furnishings etc.
The new Central Bank guidelines have introduced further restrictions on income multipliers, in that you can now borrow up to 3.5 times basic income, subject to lending criteria. This limit applies equally to first time buyers and non-first time buyers. Under these rules a sole applicant with an income of €50,000 can potentially borrow up to €175,000, a couple with an income of €70,000 can borrow up to €245,000. It is important to remember that these are guidelines only and are subject to other factors which influence the ability to afford the mortgage repayment, such as other loan commitments, childcare costs, and your age which affects the length of your mortgage term. The lender will also require applicants to prove that they can afford the mortgage repayment over a period of six months before they will grant an approval. To comply with this you will need to save the required amount for six months before you apply for your mortgage. A combination of paying rent and saving is also acceptable. Some banks require proof to be provided for the “stressed” repayment, which is the amount the repayment would be if interest rates increased by 2%. Whilst this is a mandatory requirement, it is also a good exercise in that you will be able to see the impact paying the mortgage would have on your lifestyle before you are committed to it.
Are exceptions to the guidelines allowed? Yes, banks are permitted to approve up to 15% of all mortgages outside the new guidelines. Lusk Heritage Lusk Heritage Group celebrates council award MEMBERS of Lusk Heritage Group were celebrating recently after claiming an award in a prestigious competition run by Fingal County Council. The group, which includes Pat Kelly, Brian Egan and Danny Dunne, won an award in the Special Community Effort category at this year’s Fingal Cleaner Communities Awards. A total of 46 prizes were awarded to local groups and organisations in the council’s 40th annual community based anti-litter competition. There were hundreds of entries across all categories, ranging from Best Front Garden to the Green Business Award. The number of prizes was increased by 11 since 2012 due to the extremely high standard and number of entries. Edwina Dunford, environmental awareness officer at Fingal County Council, highlighted the continuing importance of the competition. “Cleaner Communities has over the years enhanced the local authorities’ relationship with residents and businesses of the county,” said Ms Dunford. “It is primarily a litter-awareness competition to enhance the appearance of residential and business
areas around the county similar to, but separate from National Tidy Towns Competition. “The competition is open to residents, businesses and community groups from anywhere in Fingal, and we were really delighted with the increased interest in this years competition.” Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor and Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid joined the winners on the night to celebrate their achievements. Mayor O’Connor congratulated the winners and said the Cleaner Communities awards fosters great community spirit. “Householders who may not know each other have turned out to take part in clean-ups in their local areas having been encouraged or coerced by their local tidy towns communities,” he said. “We owe a great deal of gratitude to those people who encourage the rest of us to take pride in our surroundings.” Mr Reid said: “The standard this year is higher than ever before and is a continuing testament to the concern and pride Fingal residents and businesses have for the environment in which we work and live.”

Method
1. Prepare the ingredients: remove all fat from the bacon and roughly chop; chop the mushrooms; slice the garlic; beat the egg; halve the tomatoes. Spray a frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and heat until hot. Add the bacon and fry for 3-4 minutes. Add the mushrooms and garlic and continue to cook for 4-5 minutes. Season well and set aside. 2. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6. Cut each sheet of filo into six squared (making 12 in total). Line four individual flan tins with a square of filo, brush with a little egg, lay another piece on top at a slightly different angle, brush again and repeat with the remaining filo. 3. Spoon the bacon mixture into the pastry shells. Mix together the remaining egg, quark, fromage frais, parsley and Parmesan and spoon over the bacon mixture. Top with a tomato half and bake for 15-20 minutes until just set. Serve hot with steamed vegetables or cold with salad. Tip: Veggie variation - Turn this ratatouille quiche: fry chunks of onion, courgette, mixed peppers and tomatoes in low calorie oil spray, place in the filo shells, top with the quark mixture and bake as above. Meanwhile, cook the rice in lightly salted boiling water for 10 minutes and drain. 4. Serve the curry drizzled with yogurt, scattered with coriander and rice on the side.

By Patrick Martin By the time you read this article, you will probably have heard at least one Christmas carol in a shop, seen a festive window display or heard a few work colleagues bringing up the subject of what they’ll be wearing at the staff party. No sooner has the last Halloween bonfire been extinguished and the last nut cracked, than our thoughts automatically turn towards Christmas. Every year we say we won’t get caught up too early in the madness, but we always fail. It’s human nature and we just can’t help ourselves once we hear that first bar of ‘All I Want For Christmas’. For children this is obviously a time of year that can’t come quick enough. Indeed, if you asked them would they cancel Halloween and have Christmas come earlier, they’d probably bite your hand off ! However, while eye-catching window displays entice children into the shops with their reluctant parents, it’s the latter that have to pick up the tab. Sadly, there is a downside to Christmas for hard-pressed parents – debt. It’s not unusual for parents to overspend at this time of year. It might be okay to go just that little bit overboard during your seasonal spree but spending significantly more than you can afford isn’t. Somewhere along the line there has to be a payback and usually it comes along with the January blues and the dreaded sight of your local postman walking up the garden path with a sack full of bills. You might not think it’s a big deal to consider deferring repayments until the New Year but is that really the way you want to welcome in 2016? By delaying repayments, you will only ending up paying extra in interest charges, and there could also be a negative effect on your credit rating too.
So before you give into the child who wants EVERYTHING for Christmas and the most expensive toy from Santa, think of the possible repercussions. Of course, if there is one thing this recession has taught us is: how to get a grip on reality. The older generation will remember a time when they were lucky to get one gift at Christmas. God knows what they think of all the madness going on around them in the modern day. Christmas is not just for children though as we adults like to let our hair down too. Already Christmas Party nights have been booked and in the coming weeks hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues will be receiving calls (if they haven’t already) to cater for another party. There was a time not long ago when the sacred Christmas Party was under threat due to the recession, with many workplaces deciding against the annual splurge but thankfully that’s all behind us now. The Government’s giveaway budget has left most people with a smile on their face, and this Christmas could be the best in a very long time. At this time of year, it’s also a good thing if you can shop local where possible, and support the businesses that have been there for us through thick and thin. It was also help to foster some good old community spirit. The countdown is on, now let the fun begin!

Christmas Feature The Seamus Ennis Arts Centre continues to hit the high notes When it comes to entertainment in north county Dublin, you don’t have to look further than The Seamus Ennis Arts Centre (TSEAC). The popular centre has been hitting the high notes in the arts industry since it first opened its doors in the Naul on October 23, 2001. The centre aims to provide an environment that showcases performances from local, regional, national and international artists across a range of genres, and it has been doing just that for the last decade and a half. TSEAC runs year round activities including concerts, theatre, traditional Irish music sessions, cinema, comedy nights (LOL in Naul), talks, music tuition, craft workshops and art exhibitions. The idea for a cultural centre in memory of Séamus Ennis has its origins in Scoil Shéamuis Ennis, a festival which takes place every October in the village of Naul and surrounding districts. TSEAC is a ‘non-profit’ organisation set up to commemorate the work and life of the late Séamus Ennis. Over the years, the centre has undergone extensive refurbishment to also become a unique venue for an array of special events. The Cottage Café at the centre provides fresh

The importance of microchipping your pet What is a microchip? A microchip is a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice which is implanted into the neck of our pets through a needle. Once this is administered to our dog or cat, we then have a unique code. This code is then placed onto an international database and when that number is typed into the database, your dog or cat’s details then come up. A microchip is not a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker which some owners have been led to believe in the past.
Why do I need one?
The main reason to have your pet microchipped is in the unfortunate event that he/she goes missing and cannot find their way home. Once your pet is scanned for a chip and the unique 15-digit number is placed onto the database, you are then contacted immediately. This of course, means that the microchip must be registered with a reliable phone number. The second reason at the moment for a microchip is the new law that will be in place from March 2016. All dogs must have a registered microchip by then, under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.
Where can I get my pet microchipped?
Any veterinary centre can implant a microchip. So if you contact the vet that you attend with your pet, they will give you more information on when they are available and at what cost. Some veterinary clinics or hospitals may also be doing deals on microchips over the next few months with the change in law. Call your local veterinary practice for more information.

Local News Lusk Tidy Towns not resting on their laurels following bronze medal
BUOYED by their success at this year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition, Lusk Tidy Towns is already looking forward to making further improvements in 2016. Chairman of Lusk Tidy Towns Pat Kelly and her team were thrilled to win a bronze medal for the first time, their hard work all year round paying rich dividends. In Category E, Lusk was awarded 293 points, six

up on its 2014 total. Pat Kelly told Lusk Local: “We were delighted to win the bronze medal for the first time. It was a great effort and we received great support from the community. “We have a very dedicated team and they are all very enthusiastic. We are all doing our best” Lusk Tidy Towns received a comprehensive report back from the competition organisers and will be perusing it in fine detail. “We have to look the report now and see the areas where we can improve,” said Ms Kelly. “You get a breakdown in the report and we know what’s ahead of us. “We will be meeting with Fingal County Council in November to discuss the report.” As a result of the unexpected spell of good weather in early October, Lusk Tidy Towns didn’t rest on their laurels following their bronze medal success. “We’re still out pottering around and making the most of the good weather,” added Ms Kelly. Lusk was among over 860 entries in this year’s competition and members of the Tidy Towns group were invited to the awards ceremony at The Helix. Meanwhile, the 2016 Annual Tidy Towns Christmas Card & Calendar launch will take place on November 20 at 8.30pm in Murray’s, the Top Shop, Lusk with Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF). Lusk athletes step up a gear

By Rebecca Rowan Lusk Athletic Club had a very busy month with an excellent turn out of athletes taking part in the second race of the cross-country season on October 4 in the Phoenix Park. Members Colm McNally and Eamon Caffrey also took participated in the intense Killarney Adventure Race which involved a formidable kayak challenge, cycle and run over a 60K course. The locals completed it in an impressive four hours and 57 minutes. Also, club members preparing for the Dublin Marathon on bank holiday Monday, trained in the city to get a feel for the route and distance. Lusk AC’s Fit4Life and Fit4Youth groups will be tackling the Donabate 5K Parkrun on Saturday, November 7 in Newbridge House. The Parkrun is a free, timed run that takes place at hundreds of different venues all over Ireland at 9.30 every Saturday morning. Fit4life is a programme for all runners, whether a complete beginner or a regular jogger/runner. The programme encourages participants to achieve improved levels of fitness within the club structure in a fun, sociable environment. There are three Parkrun venues close to Lusk Malahide Castle, Ardgillan Castle and Newbridge House. Anyone wishing to take part must register on www. parkrun.ie to receive an official start time and then print off their barcode prior to the event. The Donabate Parkrun only opened on October 10 and saw 240 people from multiple Parkrun locations such as Ardgillan and Malahide, as well as Lusk AC members, turn up to complete the 5K course. 22LUSK LOCAL-NOVEMBER

Members of Lusk AC met up in Dublin city centre for training in preparation for the marathon. Other exciting news for Lusk Athletics Club is that a Juvenile 2K Parkrun in Rush has been given the go-ahead and will take place at Kenure Park. Juveniles, aged between four and 14, will be
eligible to take part and full details will be available soon including details on how to register and print barcodes. It is hoped that the first run will take place on December 13 but at the time Lusk Local went to
print, this date had yet to be confirmed. This promises to be a fantastic addition to the community and will encourage young people to be healthy and get involved!
Round Towers boosted by €150K sports grant By Rebecca Rowan

Round Towers GAA Club is delighted to be one of the clubs benefiting from the allocation of funds from the Sports Capital Programme 2015. Minister for Sport, Michael Ring announced that €41 million in funding is to be provided under this year’s programme to clubs nationwide. A total of €150K is to be awarded to the Lusk club which will go towards the development of a much-needed second pitch. The funding also ensures Round Towers can meet the urgent demands for additional playing facilities for their players and coaches alike. The funding is a major boost for this small, but growing club and it will benefit all members along with the wider community in Lusk. A lot of work has already gone into the planning of a second pitch and the project is well underway, with permission secured and the lease agreed. Round Towers would like to thank all those involved in helping to secure the best possible result for the club. Work on the project is continuing and many processes are already in place to provide the most cost effective solution to completing the second pitch development, which is due to start mid 2016. Round Towers GAA Club is looking forward to working with the Sports Capital Grant providers and the Dublin County Board in order to complete this development as soon as possible. Speaking at the announcement of the grants, Minister Ring said: “By investing in community facilities, these grants take the pressure off clubs and groups to fundraise themselves to provide for the upgrading and building of premises and allows coaches and other volunteers to concentrate on growing the sports they know and love. unsa Taekwondo, based in Lusk, is continuing to make a big impression in martial arts’ competitions. The club recently took part in the Korean Ambassadors Cup tournament held in the Baldoyle Badminton Centre arena. The club had a total of 15 competitors showcasing their talents, all of whom proudly took home bronze, silver and gold medals. Out of 20 teams that competed on the day, Junsa Taekwondo, Lusk came fourth place overall. As part of Taekwondo Ireland, the governing body for Olympic Taekwondo, Junsa Taekwondo have competed in worldwide competitions in countries such as the UK, Belgium, Poland, Spain and they are hoping to compete next year at the Junior World Championships in Mexico. Currently one of its students, Conor Deery, has successfully won his way to a place in the European Junior Championships in Latvia with Stuart Russell who has been selected as national team coach. Meanwhile, Junsa Taekwondo is always delighted to welcome new members to the club and to be a part of creating future Olympians. They train at Round Towers GAA Club on Mondays and Thursdays. New cycling club in Lusk seeks members THE sport of cycling continues to grow in popularity in north county Dublin with a new club formed in Lusk. Lusk FreeWheelers Cycling Club, based at Lusk United Soccer Club, is currently looking for new members, male and female, and of all age groups to join. The founding members are Stephen Byrne, Tommy Gibbons and Shay Hickey. They hold a monthly meeting on the first Tuesday of each month and currently cycle every Wednesday evening and Saturday mornings.
