Lights, Camera, Action at Power Drama!

C

ongratulations are in order for the Power Drama School as they recently celebrated their 3rd birthday this August! The school opened in August 2012 under the direction of Drama Teacher Loraine Power and has a resident Choreographer - Susan Kenny and Music Teacher - Lynn Cassidy. The school caters for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 - 17, and has since performed 21 shows, including Snow White and The Seven, Dwarves, Cinderella, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and The Wizard of Oz to name a few. Weekly classes take place in St Macullins Centre and cover drama, dance and singing. All students work towards performing a full length production at the end of each year. This year’s full length production is Aladdin. Students from Power Drama School have appeared on TG4, RTEJr and on RTEJr Digital radio. There are many benefits to taking part in drama, such as; helping students increase their self-esteem and confidence, encouraging students express themselves creatively, learning new skills and make new friends.

Power Drama School ran two Performing Arts Summer Camps during August that were a huge success! The Summer Camps covered Drama, Singing, Dancing, Arts and Crafts. Megan Weston joined the school as resident Summer Camp Art & Crafts teacher for the Summer Camps. Lots of

arts and crafts projects were undertaken during the week including origami, salt paintings, backdrop and prop making, and celtic art. At the end of the week each group performed a fully costumed showcase for parents, family and friends. The junior group (5-8 year olds) put on a showcase of “Peter Pan” for the younger students (5-8 year olds) and a production of “Grease” for the 9-15 year olds.

This gave the students a chance to learn about the production process from start to finish whilst making new friends and having fun!

Power Drama School were awarded 2nd runner up in the “Community Group of the Year” awards in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category in 2013 for their volunteer work in the Community. They have raised money for Rainbow 13+, St. Francis Hospice & have given free Summer Camp places for the past four years. They also invite the Senior Citizens to see their shows every year free of charge

Loraine Power and Susan Kenny have also given full day workshops voluntarily in disadvantaged schools as part of Get Active week for the last two years.

Seven students from Power Drama School under the Lusk Community Games Talent team voluntarily coached by Loraine Power have made it to the All-Ireland Community Games Finals which is a fantastic achievement for the first year taking part in the Games.

The new term in Power Drama School will commence on the 5th of September with members rehearsing for their end of the year production of Aladdin and we wish them the best of luck on what is sure to be another showstopping performance!

As a result of our action PTSB have come out and said that accepting the return of the overcharged amount will not have an impact on a subsequent claim for compensation. usk Community Past to Present Facebook Page is a great place to share photos old and new of people and places in lusk. The page was set up over a year ago by Michael Sweetman a local of Lusk for the whole community to enjoy. It is visited to date by the people of Lusk all over the world.

LUSK HERITAGE GROUP CELEBRATES ANOTHER MILESTONE!

I

spoke to Pat Kelly, secretary of The Lusk Heritage Group and key-holder to the Centre for twenty years, a week ago and she told me a story that stuck in my mind for days afterwards. She received a call from a family who had been redirected from their proposed stop at Cork while on a cruise. The family had ended up disembarking at Belfast port. Upon their arrival in Ireland, they immediately drove the ninety-plus minutes it took to get to a

small village in Dublin, a village with which they shared a surname – Lusk.

If ever there was a more poignant tale to capture the far-flinging reaches of history, surely this was it. Pat Kelly, along with three peers - Aidan Arnold, Jim Hawkins and the dearly missed Paddy Westin - have come to be known as “The Fabulous Four” and are known for being the forbears in the founding of Lusk Heritage Group.

The group investigates and celebrates the lives of real, ordinary people in Lusk. Commemorating their 25 year anniversary in 2014, the group launched its website on the 30/07/2015, extending its gathered knowledge even further.

It is available at www.luskheritage. com and provides an interesting log of visual material for perusal at ones leisure, including old photographs, a multitude of informational videos and interviews with locals.

involved in a number of community projects, including the unity and friendship sign in Market Square, the raven sculpture at Dublin Road roundabout and the 1916 rebellion exhibition. The group also encourages interest in the arts, lending support to the local drama group; and archaeology, having erected the stone

on Rathmore Road.

The Lusk Heritage Group truly provides people – both native and otherwise – with a living link to the past. May the next 25 years be just as exciting and educational.

Fantastic Jobs Boost For Lusk

THERE was excellent news on the jobs front for the area when local company Ballymaguire Foods announced that it is to create 100 new jobs.

The Lusk-based company, which produces ready meals, is planning to construct a new food plant over the next nine months.

As well as the 100 new jobs, there will also be an additional 100 jobs created in the construction of the 70,000 square foot state-ofthe-art facility.

It is believed that the investment will be worth an estimated €4 million per year to the local economy.

Ballymaguire Foods, part of the Country Crest Group, currently has a workforce of 150. The new positions are being created in sales and marketing, food scientists and technicians, Research and Development (R&D), new product development, chefs and general operatives.

Ballymaguire Foods is the largest producer of chilled ready meals in Ireland.

North County Dublin was hit badly during

the recession with a number of jobs lost since 2007/2008 so this will certainly be seen as a major boost in Lusk and surrounding areas.

The business community, in particular, will welcome the announcement and local unemployed people.

Local TD Brendan Ryan (Lab) was among those who welcomed the very positive news for Lusk.

“The new jobs will include graduate positions in sales and marketing, food scientists and technicians, research and development, new product development, chefs and general operatives,” he said.

“These jobs will strengthen the 150-strong workforce already employed at Ballymaguire Foods.

“The Country Crest Group is an important employer in North County Dublin and it is great to see the group continue to grow.”

Deputy Ryan added: “There are exciting times ahead for Ballymaguire Foods and I look forward to these new jobs coming on stream as soon as possible.”

Ingredients

Low calorie cooking spray 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) 1 onion finely chopped 2 garlic cloves crushed Salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ iceberg lettuce roughly shredded 8 gherkins sliced 1 small red onion finely chopped 2 tomatoes roughly chopped

For the dough:

125g strong bread flour, 7g sachet instant active yeast, 1 tsp salt

For the tomato sauce:

4 shallots, finely chopped, 3 garlic cloves, crushed, 2 tsp dried oregano, 400g can chopped tomatoes, 4 tbsp tomato purée, Small handful of finely chopped fresh basil, Salt and freshly ground black pepper

For the topping:

for the SW super sauce

3 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise, 5 tbsp fat free fromage frais, 1 level tbsp American-style mustard, 2 tbsp tomato purée, 2 tsp white wine vinegar, ½ tsp garlic salt, ¼ tsp onion granules, ¼ tsp sweet smoked paprika

Low-calorie cooking spray, 1 onion, finely chopped, 2 garlic cloves, finely crushed, 250g lean beef mince (less than 5% fat), 6 lean bacon rashers, visible fat removed, cut into small strips, 70g light mozzarella, diced, Salt and freshly ground black pepper, Small handful of fresh basil leaves, to garnish

Method

1. Spray a large, heavy-based non-stick frying pan with Frylight and place over a high heat. Add the beef, onion and garlic and stir-fry for 6-7 minutes or until the beef is cooked through and the onions have softened. Season well.

2. Meanwhile, put all the SW super sauce ingredients in a bowl with 4 tablespoons of water and whisk until well combined.

3. Mix together the lettuce, gherkins, onions and tomatoes and divide between four wide bowls. Spoon the beef mixture on top, drizzle over the SW super sauce and serve hot.

1. For the base: Put the flour into a large bowl and stir in the yeast and salt. Make a well in the middle and pour in 75ml of warm water and mix with a wooden spoon until you have a soft, fairly wet dough. Dust a surface very lightly with flour (1 level teaspoon is 1 Syn), turn out the dough and knead for 5 minutes until smooth. Cover with a tea towel until you are ready to roll.

(You don’t need to let the dough rise if you are making a thin crust.)

2. For the tomato sauce: Put the shallots, garlic, oregano, chopped tomatoes, tomato purée and most of the basil into a saucepan. Cook over a medium-low heat for 25 minutes, until you have a thick, spreadable sauce. Season well, scatter over a little more chopped basil and spread over your pizza base.

3. For the topping: Spray a non-stick frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and beef and cook for 5 minutes or until the beef is browned. Stir in the tomato pizza sauce, reduce the heat and cook gently for 8-10 minutes or until the beef is cooked through. Meanwhile, put the bacon in another non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry for 5 minutes or until cooked through and set aside.

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6. Roll out your dough, on a lightly floured surface to a circle approx 22cm across. Spoon the beef over your pizza base and scatter the bacon strips and mozzarella pieces on top. Season and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the base is golden. Scatter over the basil leaves.

SP Perfect for Extra Easy SP Tuck into this healthy-version of an all American classic. In this video recipe lean pork is slowcooked then shredded or ‘pulled’ and layered with BBQ sauce.

Ingredients

1.5-2kg pork shoulder, all fat removed, 5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp mustard powder, 500g passata, 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 2 cloves of garlic, crushed, 3 tbsp sweetener, Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

1. In a small bowl, mix passata, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, mustard powder, garlic, sweetener and seasoning.

Transfer to a small pan and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

2. Meanwhile, trim and remove all visible fat from the pork and sear all sides in a hot frying pan. Transfer to a slow cooker coat with the sauce and cook for 8-12 hours on MEDIUM. 3. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place on a cutting board. Allow the meat to cool for approximately 15 minutes, then shred into bite-sized pieces using two forks.

4. Remove the sauce from the pan and set aside to drizzle on the meat later.

Tip: On an Extra Easy day serve with a dollop of sauce, steamed green beans and a 60g wholemeal roll (Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice).

For an Extra Easy SP day fill at least half of your plate with delicious Speed vegetables or Speed salad of your choice.

Serves: 4 Prep time: approx 15 minutes plus marinating Cook time: approx 35 minutes Ready in: 30-60 Minutes Syns per serving: 2½ on Extra Easy

This delicious fish dish will save you over 30 Syns compared to the chip shop variety. It’s delicious and is sure to give you that Friday feeling - dive in!

Ingredients 4 x 150g cod fillets, Juice of 1 lemon, Salt and freshly ground black pepper, 900g Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes, Low calorie cooking spray, 60g dried breadcrumbs, 4 tbsp freshly chopped parsley, 2 eggs

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6. Place the cod fillets in a bowl, sprinkle over the lemon juice and season well.

Leave to marinate for an hour.

2. Meanwhile, peel the potatoes and cut into thick chips. Bring a pan of water to the boil and cook the chips for 5 minutes.

Drain and dry on kitchen paper. Return to the dry pan and shake to ‘rough up’ the edges. Transfer to a non-stick baking sheet, spray with low calorie cooking spray and season well.

3. Mix together the breadcrumbs, parsley and seasoning to taste. Lightly beat the eggs and place in a bowl. Dip each cod fillet into the egg mixture and then into the breadcrumbs mixture to coat evenly and place on a baking sheet sprayed with low calorie oil spray.

4. Place the chips in the oven and cook for 10 minutes. Add the fish and cook for a further 15-20 minutes. Divide between four plates and serve with tomato ketchup (1 Syn per level tbsp).

Animal Matters

The Trojan Horse Our pets are a great source of solace and comfort to us no matter what time of day or night it is we’re with them. The wagging tail, the gentle meow, or simply being curled up on our lap on a summers evening; we all love the closeness of our pets.

But we must always be aware. Our cat or dog can be the carrier of a disease that can affect us from time to time. Such diseases that can spread from animal to man and vice versa, are known as zoonotic diseases. Our cat or dog can venture down ditches and dykes that we ourselves wouldn’t dare go down. They might wade through dirty water or knock over dirty bins and go through the spilled garbage inside. Five minutes later they could be back inside our kitchen and even dare to get up on the table to announce they’re home. Worse than that, some people allow their pets up into the sleeping area and even onto the pillow on the bed. “ And where pray tell were they hardly five minutes before that? Down the dirty ditch of course.

The potential for disease spread is enormous in scenarios like that and so we must always be on our guard.

We had one such case in the clinic the other day where a dog presented with an itchy skin and some hair-loss that seemed to be worsening by the day.

We ran a few tests on the case and lo and behold we found that this pet was suffering from ringworm.

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin that affects cats and dogs and humans alike. It is therefore a zoonotic disease and can cause quite a nasty reaction on the skin of humans. The cat can be the source of an outbreak and the cat spreads it to the family dog. The disease can spread also to the skin of any and every member of the unsuspecting family.

In this case it was the cat who was the primary source and the dog was an unsuspecting victim of the spread. As it happened, the cat spent a lot of time indoors and was found from time to time asleep on the pillow of a younger member of the family. This fungal disease is slow growing and therefore by inference, is quite slow to treat and kill. The cat may or may not show any outward signs but the poor dog was quite the worst for wear.

The dog was treated aggressively and the cat was checked for evidence of the disease. Sure enough Felix proved positive for ringworm and had to undergo intensive treatment; the very same as Fido the dog.

One of the young adults of the house had a suspicious looking skin lesion and went to see the local GP. Ringworm was confirmed and treatment was initiated.

Beware of this disease as it can cause a nasty enough lesion in humans and may leave a little telltale skin scar for many years to come.

And so we see that our household pet can be a Trojan horse that can bring in some nasty surprises from time to time.

The advice is hygiene all the way; with hand washing and all due care when in close contact with

our indoor/outdoor cats and dogs. Get any strange symptoms checked out and please refrain from allowing our wandering pets from wandering up to the sleeping area of the home. That’s all for this month and we wish you all a pleasant Autumn with some fine evenings to enjoy with our furry friends.

ound Towers GAA club has a rich history and plays a huge role in the community of Lusk. For the last two years, Round Towers have been working on their 2013-2018 strategic plan which aims to aid the club as it continues to grow and thrive, along with developing the clubs facilities and investing in their teams and players development. Corporate sponsorship plays a major part in allowing the club to achieve this.

Round Towers is driven by its members and mentors, whose passion and commitment to both the sport and the club has seen the club flourish into a vibrant facet of the Lusk community. The Gaelic Promotions Officer also works closely with all the local schools, both primary and secondary, facilitating opportunities for students to enhance their skills.

Round Towers also has a very strong, upcoming Juvenile section, and run a Junior Academy every Saturday from 10.45 - 12pm, catering for boys and girls aged between 4-7 in both Gaelic Football and Hurling/Camogie. The Academy is starting back on the 18th of September and is open to any new members who wish to join.

The Junior Academy teaches basic Gaelic football and Hurling skills and also helps develop agility, balance, co-ordination, running, jumping and throwing; among other fundamental skills. Parents are also encouraged to help out if they can as volunteers primarily run the Academy.

Congratulations are also in order for the Round Towers First Team as they have succeeded in becoming the last surviving Dublin Junior Team, and will represent the County in the Leinster Junior Football Championship against Carlow on the 25th of October! The match will be played away from home in Carlow, and will determine which team will pass through to the quarter final of the championship. Best of luck to the team and their coaches in their preparations for the match!

Lusk Athletic Club Strikes Gold!

L

usk Athletic Club is going from strength to strength as recent successes prove.

The All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships took place in July in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, and Lusk AC were represented by seven hopeful athletes, which is the highest number of athletes the club has ever had competing at a single national championship. To compete at a national level is a huge achievement, and first-timers, DJ Riley and Sarah Derham did the Lusk community proud. Even though they didn’t place in their individual events, they have gained beneficial experience and will train hard with the goal of returning again next year. Two competitors who returned this year were Katie Halpin, for her middle distance event, which is one of the most competitive races of the whole championship and Adam McNally who succeeded in retaining the silver he won last year. Another promising athlete was Kevin Halpin who took silver in his first ever national competition.

A true success story at the Track and Field Championships is that of the Flynn family. Both Maeve and Brian Flynn took the Gold in their respective pole vaulting events, and are now Ireland’s top pole vaulters in their age group. Maeve retained the gold she won in 2014, whereas this is Brian’s first gold, and he achieved it in his last competition as a juvenile. They have been members

of Lusk AC since U/10’s, taking part in all athletic aspects of the club, and while excelling at hurdles and long jump, the pole vault event is where they both really shine. Their achievements are the result of hard work, determination and perseverance, watched closely by their coaches, Noelle and their dad, Seamus, who was also the first chairman of the newly reformed club.

Upcoming events for the Lusk Athletic Club include this years Dublin Marathon which is taking place in October. Training with Lusk AC has already begun, with the Lusk AC Masters Group following a training plan focusing on getting the most from their participation.

Training is taking place four times a week with Sunday and Monday sessions open to both non members and members

alike, while Tuesday and Thursday sessions are confined to members only. Best of luck to Lusk AC with their upcoming events and congratulations to the competitors on their recent success!!

Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan

T

he Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan brings together a number of organisations to strive to meet the future needs of sporting facilities in the community of Lusk.

Lusk is a growing area with a strong background in sports and the aim of this plan is to create a development road map that will help guide ongoing investment towards sporting facilities in Lusk. The success of this strategy also relies on the partnership and unity of several organisations. Lusk’s position within Fingal means that it can be used as a sort of sports hub by a number of clubs in the district eg, Fingal Triathlon, Fingal All Stars, and The Hills Cricket Club. The Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan has been developed with representatives from the Community Council and local schools.

The voluntary organisations in Lusk that provide a broad range of services to the community are

viewed as the strategic stakeholders for the plan.

Some of the local investors include Lusk United A.F.C, who are actively involved in the training and education of coaches and constantly aimed towards to improving soccer facilities for the Lusk community. Round Towers GAA plays an essential role in the parish of Lusk and with over 500 members across all age groups is a substantial stakeholder in this project. Lusk Athletic Club is also involved in this plan and is well positioned to accommodate the growing population of Lusk and other surrounding areas. Lusk AC is also the holder of the Club Quality Mark awarded by Athletics Ireland.

The Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan also aims to improve many aspects of sporting life within the village. One of these objectives is to ensure that there is a healthy relationship between sporting and educational facilities and resources,

with the hope of enlarging community benefits of investment in the sports and education sector in Lusk. There is a focus on making Lusk the healthiest and most active community in Ireland by providing its residents with whatever needs are necessary for them to stay active. The plan aims to ensure there is an adequate number of sporting facilities to support the growing community, and in turn have the ability to host different sporting events.

This plan is set to take place over the next three years, and some of the outcomes include a new all-weather floodlit playing pitch, one additional GAA pitch, two juvenile grass pitches, a 400 metre and eight lane running track around an all weather pitch, a cage for shot putt and hammer throwing and a new indoor sports hall.
