Lusk Guild of ICA celebrates 50th anniversary

In the year which Ireland celebrates 100 years since the 1916 Rising, the Lusk Guild of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) made a little history of their own by celebrating their 50th anniversary. President Maeve Deeb welcomed everyone to a function held at the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan, on June 17. Ms Deeb thanked National President of the ICA Marie O’Toole and Dublin Federation President Mary Melia for taking time out of their busy diaries to attend. She also thanked the Lusk Guild party committee comprising Jacinta Connolly, Mary Hickey, Maria Baird and Gertie Kelly for their hard work arranging such a wonderful event. Later in the evening Ms O’Toole presented the Guild with a certificate to mark the 50 years. Lusk Guild Founding President Eileen Sweetman spoke fondly of her time as the first

President and imparted a few pearls of wisdom on what the future years would bring. ‘Stage Two’ provided the music and ensured the dance floor was always full. Caroline O’Malley, PRO Lusk Guild, said it was wonderful to catch up with former members. “We were also joined by friends from the Balbriggan, Donabate, Garristown and Rush Guilds,” said Ms O’Malley. “A toast was made to those great ladies who had gone before us and who helped to make the ICA the great organisation that it is.” Lusk Guild has approximately 45 members and meets on the first Wednesday of every month at Lusk Scout Den. It is involved in a wide range of fundraising activities such as Irish Guide Dogs, Irish Cancer Society, Tea Day - Alzheimer’s Society, Charity Walk each September and community activities. The latter includes helping at the Holy

Communion and Confirmation receptions for Lusk National School and supporting the Tidy Towns in their endeavours to keep Lusk tidy. “We have speakers at our monthly meetings who give talks on a variety of topics,” said Ms O’Malley. “In the past we’ve had speakers on Health and Wellbeing, demonstrating fitness exercises, line dancing classes, flower arranging, financial matters and historical talks. “There is also a group who meet to play badminton weekly on Thursdays and new members are always welcome. “We also have outings to support our local theatre, the Millbank, and we travel further afield to see the upcoming shows in the Bord Gais and other venues. Other outings include Race nights, quizzes, and trying out different restaurants.” “We have a European trip every year which has been very enjoyable, so why not join the ICA and travel the world!”

Experience of a lifetime Lusk athlete Rodrigo completes South American challenge

THEY are made of strong stuff at Lusk Athletic Club. Take for the instance the achievement of one of the club’s members, Rodrigo Lara, who recently completed a 68k trek in Ecuador, South America. Rodrigo took on the trek as a family goal to pay tribute to his 96-year-old grandfather, Fernando Vaca’s walking adventures 70 years ago. The challenge was to follow his grandfather’s footsteps with his brother, Bolivar, starting in Salcedo at 2,800 metres above sea level heading SouthEast in the Ecuadorian Andes. Starting at dawn at 6am and finishing at sunset at 6pm the durable brothers walked for just under 12 hours. The thin air and altitude were a real test, especially after a 15k climb to reach 3,200m. The support of family and friends was a huge motivation, but having the Grandpa in the safety car was the motor to keep them going. The destination (Baños) 68km away, was a long downhill to 1,800 metres. This was an experience of a lifetime for Rodrigo that is set to become an annual event with a relay format. The event was covered by local radio stations and a national TV channel with their message to the wider community: ‘get out there, get some fresh air, exercise and have a healthier life’. Pipe Band Championships drum up more success This year’s Fingal Pipe Band Championships, held in Lusk, proved to be a big success once again. The Fingal Championships is the second largest contest in the Republic of Ireland this year – only being surpassed by the All Ireland competition, which takes place on July 2 in the grounds of Malahide Castle. Next year, the organisers are aiming to have the largest contest in the Republic of Ireland. The Black Raven Pipe Band would like to thank the sponsors, supporters, the schools for the use of their car parks, An Garda Síochána, the stewards and you, the local community for making the contest such a success. For prize giving, the bands came together as a massed band and played a number of tunes. A combined intake of breath could be heard from the spectators.

Great evening at Thomas Ashe Commemoration

s part of the 1916-2016 centenary commemoration Lusk Heritage Group, in collaboration with Corduff National School and Power Drama School, Lusk, organised a very special night in Corduff National School. The school welcomed members of the extended Ashe family to mark the 100th anniversary of Ashe’s time as Principal of the school from 1908 to 1916. Fingal Lord Mayor, David O’Connor and Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) President, Rosena Jordan, were also in attendance. Principal teacher, Anna McKeown, and her pupils welcomed guests to the school which was decorated with bunting and the gardens looked splendid with beautiful flowers adorning every corner you turned. The evening commenced with a special wreath laying ceremony by Ms Jordan. Michael Russell, from the Black Raven Pipe Band, played a haunting piece of music as the wreath was laid in honour of Thomas Ashe. Ms McKeown’s talented pupils gave a moving reading of the school’s 2016 Proclamation. In a speech made by Aidan Arnold, a member of the Lusk Heritage Group and a former pupil of the school, he told how Thomas Ashe was much more than a military leader of 1916. He was a very 8

talented teacher, often ahead of his time in his teaching methods and approach to education. Aidan spoke of how Ashe concentrated young minds on Irish culture, on the Irish language, history, music and song. Ashe fostered a love of sport, he was a poet, a keen painter and an Irish language activist. Pat Kelly, from Lusk Heritage Group, recited a poem about Thomas Ashe which had been given to her many years ago. Corduff National School had recorded a short tribute to Ashe, which was shown on DVD, and finally, a new video commissioned by Lusk Heritage School based on the Inquest into the Death of Thomas Ashe was screened. The new video was filmed and edited by Jim Hawkins and directed by Loraine Power. Twelve Power Drama School students acted in the film which was very well received by a turnout of over 100 people. Swords Courthouse was hired for the shooting of the Thomas Ashe Inquest and the acting of the young students from Power Drama School was highly commended. Refreshments were provided after the ceremony by the Parents’ Association of Corduff National School and a wonderful evening was had by all who attended. Fingal County Council generously supported this project as part of its 19162016 commemorative celebrations.

Judging for Tidy Towns competiton underway As judging for this year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition gets underway, Lusk Tidy Towns are calling on locals to support them in their bid for success Chairperson Pat Kelly and her hardworking team brought great pride to the village in September when they won a bronze medal. The team is hoping to build on that this time around by garnering enough points to win a silver or even a gold medal in their category. Summer reading initiative launched Deputy Mayor Cllr Eoghan O’Brien, Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid and author Alan Nolan, with schoolchildren from St Andrew’s National School and St John Paul 2 at the launch.

Fingal Libraries have launched a new reading initiative for the summer. Summer Stars is a free national reading programme for children which will run in public libraries throughout the country this summer. To celebrate the Fingal County Libraries launch, schoolchildren from St Andrew’s National School and St John Paul 2 came along to join in the fun and to meet with children’s author and artist Alan Nolan. Summer Stars encourages reading throughout the summer holidays. Each child who registers for the programme will receive their own Summer Stars reading card to record their progress and a stamp will be added to their card at the library for each book read.

Local school celebrates award Three pupils from Rush & Lusk Educate Together National School (ETNS) and their teacher travelled to Dublin recently for the Our World Irish Aid Awards Ceremony. The school received an award in recognition of a project the whole school undertook on the United Nations GLOBAL GOALS for SUSTAINABILITY. Fun rewards will be provided along the way. At the end of the programme, all children who have participated will be invited to attend an awards event. Speaking at the launch, Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid, said: “It’s great to be here at the launch of the Summer Stars programme in Malahide Library. “The Summer Stars programme is a fun and valuable initiative for children and families, and Fingal Libraries are delighted to be part of this programme.” Children can register for Summer Stars in any Fingal County Library now, it’s free, fun and open to all primary school children.

The Our World Irish Aid Awards gives pupils the chance to learn more about the developing world and to speak out for a better future for all the world’s people. The theme of this year’s awards was ‘One World, One Future.’ The award organisers wanted the pupils to think and learn about children in developing countries, and how rich and poor countries are working together to create a better future for those children, through the new Global Goals of the United Nations. Irish Aid is the Government’s overseas development aid programme, which works to fight global poverty. It is working with other countries to achieve

the United Nations Global Goals, especially in its nine partner countries, eight of which are in Africa, where it works closely with the governments to build schools and hospitals, and grow more food and improve the lives of the poor. In the competition, Milverton National School, Skerries, was one of the Dublin Regional Finalists, while Balbriggan Educate Together National School (ETNS), Moylaragh, did fantastically well when they were announced as one of the 12 National finalists. Meanwhile, Rush and Lusk ETNS held a ‘Spectacular Summerfest’ on June 19. The event, is the school’s main fundraiser of the year and proved to be a great family day out.

Proud day for Tower View Montessori By Oisin McQueirns The students of Tower View Montessori in Lusk were all smiles in June when they received their national Healthy Ireland Smart Start award. The Montessori, which is run by local teachers Anne McGee and Joan Swords, has been validated as a healthy Ireland preschool service for their practices in many aspects of children’s health which includes emotional wellbeing, nutrition, oral health, physical activity and general health and safety. This award is important for Tower View as it means that they are now recognised as a health promoting service by the Health Improvement Division of the HSE and is a huge achievement for the school which is only in its second year of business. “We’re so proud of all of our students who worked very hard to help us achieve this award,” said Anne, one of the teachers at Tower View. “We are constantly focused on trying to improve all aspects of our students’ health and this award is Some of the children at Tower View Montessori. really proving that we are on the right track.” Tower View is located at The Square in Lusk and more information can be found on their Facebook page- Tower View Montessori.

900 submissions received for Fingal plan Approximately 900 submissions in relation to the Draft Fingal Development Plan 2017-2023 have been received by Fingal County Council. In his monthly report to councillors, Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid said preparation of his report for the plan has commenced and will be presented to councillors on July 22. There were seven Public Information Drop-in sessions at locations throughout the county during the consultation period which were well attended and facilitated a “useful” exchange between citizens and council planning officials. Mr Reid also reported that the council’s Director of Service for Housing and Community, Margaret Geraghty, appeared before the Oireachtas Housing and Homeless Committee on June 2. Housing Directors and senior staff from the other Dublin authorities and senior officials from the Department of Environment and Local Government were also in attendance. The meeting provided the committee with a range of data on housing and aided a broad discussion on the serious issues facing the council in the area of housing provision. Mr Reid told councillors that, under the Social Housing Strategy 2020, Fingal County Council was given €81 million and set a target of delivering 1,376 units in the period from 2015 to 2017. To date, the council has delivered 522 units, with a further 668 either approved or agreed, and is on course to exceed its target by the end of 2017.

We will never forget our history in Lusk By Majella Biddulph

aint Macullin who was the Bishop of Lusk built a monastery in Lusk on the site of the Round Tower in approximately 450s A D. He was said to have lived in a cave or was buried in an underground tomb which gave Lusk its name from the Irish word Lusca that means underground chamber or cave. Lusk was plundered and burned many times in the eighth and ninth centuries by marauding Vikings who wanted the inhabitants of Lusk as slave labour. The Christians built the Round Tower in the ninth century in an attempt to foil the Viking raids on Lusk. The original entrance door was four or five metres above the ground. To gain entry a ladder would be lowered for you to climb up and then the ladder would be pulled back up for safety. A prominent man Forgall Monarch lived between Quickpenny hill and Lusk. He had a beautiful daughter named Emer who was sought after by many men who wanted her for their wife. Cu Chulainn laid a siege outside their home for a year ending with him slaying Forgall Monarch. He left then claiming Emer as his wife. In 20th century Ireland Lusk mothers have a tradition of calling their daughters Emer after Cu Chulainn’s wife. The first formal national school in Ireland was formed in 1831. Before that people had to pay to attend schools or attend the hedge school in a barn or house for a much smaller fee. The hedge school in Lusk was run by educated local men and the fees were charged by the amount of subjects you wanted to learn. The first National School built on Corduff House land in Lusk in 1844 was made of clay with a thatched roof. This was to be replaced with a more modern building in 1906. Ireland in the early 19th century was experiencing a rise in patriotic pride with the rebirth of the Irish language. Thomas Ashe, the then schoolmaster of Corduff School, had heard a pipe band playing and he thought that it would be a great idea to have a band in Lusk. In 1910 he and John Rooney taught themselves to play the bagpipes and the Black Raven Pipe Club was formed. It is now known as the Black Raven Pipe Band. Their name is said to have come from the battle of Clontarf when Brian Boru captured the Black Raven Flag from the Vikings. The highest God that the Vikings idolised was called Odin. He had two black ravens he called Huggin (thought) and Muninn (memory). Odin would free these birds every morning and they would come back from flying all over the world to tell him all the important news of their travels.

These flags were hand woven by the Vikings’ women for good luck and to keep them safe and they wouldn’t have given one over without a fight. In 1914 two companies of the Irish volunteers were formed in Lusk. One was by the Rooney family who were affiliated with the hurling and Gaelic football club. The other was formed by the Murtagh and Taylor families. There wasn’t enough room for the two companies in rural Lusk which led to bickering between the two factions. These problems had to be put to rest before they could play a part in the Easter Rising of 1916. Thomas Ashe played a major role in the 1916 rising before being captured and sent to prison in

England. After his release he was arrested again for speeches he made alongside Michael Collins. When Thomas went on hunger strike he was killed while being force fed by prison staff. Our Saint Maculins Catholic church was built in 1924 where it still serves our community well. The New National School was built in 1955 and we now have the Educate Together National School and the Community College Secondary School. Although Lusk experienced a huge growth in population in recent years it still remains a village to be proud of. Cllr Farrell raises local issues at council level

Local councillor Ken Farrell (Lab) raised a number of issues pertaining to Lusk at a recent meeting of Fingal County Council. In relation to the Lusk Community Sports Facility, Cllr Farrell asked Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid to report on the amount of monies that has been ringfenced for the facility

which is due to commence shortly in conjunction with the building of a new senior and junior national school at the same location in Lusk. In his report, Mr Reid said the council entered into discussions with the Department of Education and Skills in 2011 to fund the installation of a sports hall at Lusk National School. “This project was originally included in the 2013- 2015 Capital Programme in the sum of €930,000 and the original budget reflected costs at late November 2012,” he said. “In January 2016, Lusk National School submitted final increased costs which had been approved by the Department of Education and Skills in the sum of €1,226,848 (inclusive of VAT). “This budget includes design fees in the sum of €109,025 (inclusive of VAT). “To date Fingal County Council have paid a portion of the design fees budget in the sum of €52,635.45. Mr Reid added: “Fingal County Council is aware that contractors have recently been appointed to this project by the Department of Education and Skills with the turning of the sod due to take place late summer 2016.” Separately, Cllr Farrell said the Balbriggan Swords Area Committee recommends that the grass area at Chapel Farm Mews, Lusk, be maintained on a regular basis to ensure this location is kept up to the same standard as other open spaces taken in charge by the council. The council said its Property Services Division has engaged a contractor to carry out maintenance work on a regular basis in respect of the land in question. The contractor has since commenced the programme of work. Cllr Farrell also called on the council to make arrangements to have wild flowers planted on the roadside margins at Ministers Road inside the wooden barrier on the left hand side leaving Lusk. The council told Cllr Farrell that the the area will be examined to determine its suitability for perennial bulb planting “but we have to ensure that traffic sightlines are not blocked with any proposed planting”.

Almost 400 photos were entered in the competition and the winning photographs, and a number of runner up photos were exhibited at Skerries Mills. Councillors meet in Swords to discuss housing crisis

wo top officials from the Housing Agency addressed members of Fingal County Council recently at County Hall, Swords. Conor Skehan, chairperson of the Housing Agency, and Jim Baneham, senior executive with the Agency, made presentations and answered questions at a special meeting of the Fingal County Council’s Housing Strategic Policy Committee to which every councillor was invited. Mr Skehan paid tribute to the work being

done by the council in relation to housing and said the issues which need to be tackled include availability, affordability and creating communities. Following their presentations, Mr Skehan and Mr Baneham answered a broad range of questions from councillors present. Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid updated councillors on the approaches being taken at national and local level to deal with the housing crisis. He reported on a meeting between

representatives of the 31 Local Authorities and Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Simon Coveney. Mr Reid reported that the new minister fully accepted that the current issues around housing need to be treated as a national crisis and it is currently the number one priority for the Government. Minister Coveney is also committed to developing a new strategy for housing within 100 days of taking office and is working to secure extra capital. “We welcome the announcement by the Minister that any extra funds he secures will be used to reward performing councils,” said Mr Reid. “In Fingal, we are ahead of our targets under the 2015-2017 Housing Strategy and we are looking at ways of accelerating our plans over the next six months.” Margaret Geraghty, Director of Housing and Community, is scheduled to address councillors on the situation in Fingal at the upcoming meetings of the three area committees. Chairman of the Housing SPC, Clr Ken Farrell, thanked Mr Skehan and Mr Bateman for their attendance and engaging with councillors while the Outgoing Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor, said it was an excellent meeting.

New EU Directive to affect cases against package tour operators The existing law relating to a ‘package’ is a combination of at least two components including transport, accommodation, or other tourist services such as car hire which are organised by a single trader and paid for at the same time. The new EU Directive will introduce the concept of ‘linked travel arrangement’. Linked travel arrangements require a combination of at least two components as before however these components may now be purchased from different traders and concluded through separate contracts. The new directive connects these services to make a ‘package’ if the services are connected through the sharing of personal data such as contact information, credit card details, or passport numbers which are passed from the first trader to the subsequent trader. The contracts must have been concluded within 24 hours of one another to be deemed linked. Considering this wide scope of the directive the final wording of the Act may be delay. Sift Flower, ground porridge oats, salt into large bowl. Add sugar and stir. In separate bowel mix egg yolks (keeping egg whites for whisking) milk, vanilla essence, lemon juice, lemon zest and melted butter. Combine wet and dry ingredients to form batter. In a clean jug / bowel whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold this through the pancake mix being carful not to over mix. Heat large pan, fry and enjoy!!

Dublin Championships Itâ€™s hard to know how to condense a report with so much going on over the last few weekends. There were brilliant results for Lusk AC at the Dublin Juvenile Championships. The training and development over the last couple of years has taken a great leap to success for a lot of the juveniles. Though not all returned home with a medal the fact is that every athlete competed so well in all the events they chose. All at Lusk AC are so proud of everyone who took part and put themselves at a start, jump or throw line. In total, 30 medals were won over four days: 14 gold, eight silver and eight bronze. And this does not include the 9/10/11 Championships where 10 more medals were collected. It was an amazing achievement by all the athletes out on the track and field of all ages. Thank you to the amazing coaches.

Master Stuart Russell had the honour of grading a group of fantastic Taekwondo enthusiasts from St Michael’s House.

During the month of June, Junsa Taekwondo members participated in training sessions at home and abroad, competitions, corner judges’ seminars and gradings for St Michael’s House. July will be just as busy, starting with a sparring

seminar in Belfast, the club grading, a competition in Luxembourg and a high level training camp in Belgium at the end of the month. Junsa Taekwondo members train at Round Towers GAA Club, Lusk and is open to all, from
