April 24 was a very special day throughout the country with hundreds of events taking place to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising.

Numerous events took place in Fingal too, and at Round Towers

GAA Club, there was the unveiling of the Thomas Ashe Memorial Wall and Plaque.

The plaque is dedicated to the brave men of Lusk who fought in 1916. The Lusk community came out in force to attend the event.

Lusk Tidy Towns are calling on locals to support them in their bid for success in this year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition.

Chairperson Pat Kelly and her hardworking team brought great pride to the village in September when they won a bronze medal and are hoping to build on that this time around by garnering enough points to win a silver or even a gold medal in their category.

However, to achieve this aim, the committee needs your support in keeping the village looking its best at all times.

A little effort can make a lot of difference to the appearance of the area.

Please help by picking up litter, sweeping and painting and generally helping to ‘KEEP LUSK TIDY’.

For the past 26 years Lusk has performed very well in this competition and everybody’s continued support is appreciated. The committee is asking locals and visitors to: THINK TIDY - Make a habit of thinking tidy from now on and you can take the first step towards lessening litter.

PICK UP - A little effort can make a lot of difference to the appearance of your home, your school, your workplace and their surroundings. It only takes a moment to pick up a piece of litter an put it in the bin.

TAKE HOME - The only proper place for refuse is in the bin. But if you are out and about and no bin is available, take it home for disposal.

As soon as spring sprung, Pat Kelly and her team of dedicated volunteers were out and about, cleaning up the village after the ravages of winter left its mark.

Hopefully this hard work will yield rich dividends when the results of the national awards are announced in the autumn.

The national SuperValu TidyTowns competition is organised by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government with the support of the main sponsor SuperValu and many other agencies.

The competition involves participating areas being rated on all aspects of their local environment and prizes awarded to the best under many different categories.

The overall winner is ‘Ireland’s Tidiest Town’. which is announced at a national ceremony in September each year.

Lusk Tidy Towns unveil 1916 commemorative plaque Lusk Tidy Towns Association held the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the Lusk residents who participated in the 1916 rising, on May 20 in Murrays Top Shop of Lusk.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor unveiled the plaque at the event which saw a great turnout. A lovely evening was had by all.

The more time changes, the more things are the same

T

he 1901 Irish Census highlights that the more time changes, the more things are the same, at least in my ancient Lusk where the same surnames repeat, and even the same christian names recur, at least within families.

There was quite a deal of village inter-marrying yet the gravestones indicate a healthy lifestyle with 80 years plus common.

McCann Clan The 1901 Census indicates the McCann Family of Church Road, Lusk where James McCann lives today near Sherry’s Corner. Back in 1901, 12 lived in the home with one son absent on Census night.

There were nine sons, the father and grandfather with the mother Sarah Murray-McCann the lone female. She did not survive until the 1911 Census.

All present are listed as reading and writing except Christopher (reading only) and the 4-yearold and the 1-year-old. Then a local RIC officer was the Census Enumerator of the day insuring cooperation and accuracy (in the main).

Sarah Murray married Daniel McCann in St Maccullins, Lusk on September 24 1875 which indicates she too was a Lusk lass. Daniel was 16 years her senior when they married.

One of her many sons, also a Daniel (25 years) and my grandfather, married Teresa Wogan (24 years) on November 24 1910 again in Lusk. She was born on September 29 1884 to William Wogan, farmer from Wimbletown, Ballyboughal, just one parish away, while her mother was Jane Morgan-Wogan.

survive past the 1920s due to violent deaths.

James McCann, aged 7 in 1901, had joined the British Army and served in India and Aden.

A southern Catholic serving in the northern Protestant Royal Irish Rifles was an unusual choice of regiment. He was then sent as a member of the British Expeditionary Force in the ‘Great War’.

He died aged 20 “in actual military service” (KIA) on December 9 1914, one of the earliest casualties of WW1.

James’s death was a soldier’s death, quick and instantaneous, over in a flash. The death of his brother John/Sean was in marked contrast. It was torturous and protracted. He was repeatedly bayoneted. Death after many hours by rifle fire was likely a relief.

His brother John/Sean ‘Rover’ McCann, aged 14 in 1910, was murdered on November 22 1920, the morning after Bloody Sunday. John is buried side by side with his brother Daniel, my grandfather, in the shadow of the Lusk Round Tower surrounded by many more McCann plots, all within sight of the McCann home where they were raised with their other seven brothers.

John’s brutal death was by no means the only death that was consequential of a blood fest in revenge for Bloody Sunday. Having been on the run, it must be questioned why Rover was in his father-in-law’s house that night when the Tans came calling!? His wife Annie Crosbie-McCann was weeks from birth of their third son Thomas, with sons Daniel and Sean already needed rearing.

In truth the Tans didn’t need the excuse of Bloody Sunday to execute their opposition without the benefit of a courtesy Field Court Martial as was granted upon Our Leaders in 1916. Not two weeks earlier than Nov 1920, they executed Brendan O’Carroll’s grandfather also at

2.30am as was detailed in ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ on BBC all because he had two sons ‘involved’.

Rover served under the Lusk Company’s captain, Edward Rooney at Ashbourne. The Rooney Brothers were the ‘principles’ of the Lusk Hurley Club as is detailed by one of the earliest players, the Lusk man, Thomas Peppard’s Affidavit. Peppard was also in the Lusk Company and was later after 1916, the Intelligence Officer for the whole Fingal Brigade.

When you read the Peppard details (weapon or the lack) of how the Lusk Companies were virtually banned from having weapons until differences were resolved with the Redmondite Company that that victory at Ashbourne against well armed superior forces of trained militia was so very unlikely. Maybe the Lusk celie that Easter Sunday night was a factor but belief in The Cause Of Ireland was the determining factor for me.

The victory at Ashbourne is in marked contract to events at Mount Street Bridge where 10 Volunteers under sharpshooter Malone held back a huge British force with Heavy Sherwood Foresters losses.

Many RIC barracks surrendered in the War of Independence subsequent to Ashbourne. Rover is credited with a part in the Ashbourne RIC barracks surrender. His quarrying experience with dynamite gave him bomber status. When the first bomb only blew a deep hole short of the barrack door, the RIC were quick to surrender before another was needed.

In the 1901 Census, Daniel of 56 years had a son Daniel of 18 years. Daniel Jr much later had a son Michael and daughter Teresa, my mother.

Each married a son Robert, my father, and a daughter, Kathleen of my grandfather Joseph Hand, son of Elizabeth Hand. “The more it changes, the more it’s the same thing.”!

I was born on Christmas Day 1948. One day earlier my uncle Michael and aunt Kathleen had twins Noleen and Stepney, so they are closer in blood than cousins! “The more it changes, the more it’s the same thing.”!! I am another Robert with my brother another Joseph.

There was a ‘formula’ in the naming of Irish sons. The first was called after the fraternal grandfather, the second after the maternal grandfather, the third after the father and subsequent sons after uncles. The Church Road McCanns with nine sons may have exploited the limitations of the formula. I need further research to test if fraternal uncles were considered.

You are not alone with Nurture

Council App-y with national competition win Fingal County Council’s ‘Unfolding News Story’ App has won a prestigious competition held by ESRI Ireland.

The App, available on Google Play and the AppStore, is about the council connecting with its customers to update them on all of the latest news in relation to water disruptions, road closures, severe weather, floods, latest planning applications and community events.

This service is accessible to customers on the council’s website and on mobile devices. It is also presented in the interactive digital Atrium of County Hall in Swords on large multiple touchscreens. At any time, the content is relevant for the current week.

The Fingal team worked with PinPoint Alerts to create an application using ESRI cloud technology, ArcGIS Online, StoryMaps and AppStudio for ArcGIS. Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid said: “This is a tremendous achievement by our Project Management Team and one we are very proud of because it is an excellent example of how we at Fingal County Council are utilising technology for the benefit of the citizens of Fingal.”

Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor congratulated the Project Management Team, on behalf of all the council members, on their success.

“It is well deserved because we have seen at first-hand how useful this App is and how it can help the people of Fingal,” said Mayor O’Connor.

Claire McIntyre of the Project Management Team said: “This was team effort from myself, Hazel Farley and Brendan Cunningham of Pinpoint Alerts and we are delighted to have won this prestigious competition.

“The App is one of several we have developed and all have been devised to make things easier for people to interact with Fingal County Council.”

ecently I found myself in a meeting with a fascinating lady, Irene Lowry.

As a life coach, I have an inquisitive nature and I wanted to know what Irene’s local charity, Nurture, was all about. I knew it was something to do with childbirth and post-natal aftercare, but having never taken on a maternal role myself, I wasn’t at all familiar with this support network within the community.

On entering the Nurture office on Thomas Hand Street, “that purple place that used to be the carpet shop” as it’s affectionately known, you immediately enter a little oasis of calm. Essential oil burners exude an aroma of peace and harmony, almost like when you walk into a massage therapy room, candles gently flickering, I felt I was in for a treat. Over a cup of coffee I chatted with Irene and asked outright, what is this place all about?

Irene is chief executive of Nurture, an Irish registered charity she set up in 2011. In July 2015, Irene set up the Nurture head office on Thomas Hand Street, Skerries, as she wanted to set up her head office in a local, tight-knit community.

Nurture offers counselling nationwide for maternal mental health which includes

issues surrounding conception, pregnancy and childbirth.

Mental health in general is a term that is becoming more and more acceptable in our society, which is no bad thing.

“We offer supports in areas such as post and pre-natal depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, miscarriage, loss of a baby, stillbirth, failed IVF and much more,” says Irene.

“Those who turn to Nurture in need of help will secure a counselling appointment under two weeks of contacting the charity. We operate a ‘No Wait List’ policy, so our supports are immediate and affordable to women, partners and family members, as issues relating to maternal mental health affect all the family.

“Our area of maternal mental health in Ireland is massively stigmatised and somewhat taboo.

People need to know it really is okay to talk about it. Nurture’s message is ‘You Are Not Alone’.”

I ask more about the ‘No Wait List’ policy; it seems to me that is where a lot of the problems exacebate, when those suffering are made wait on a list for months.

“We offer critical intervention supports within 24/48 hours for women who are feeling suicidal or simply not coping,” says Irene.

“This avoids a woman having to attend Accident and Emergency departments. Nurture also runs facilitated eight-week support groups for women and their babies who may be experiencing

post-natal depression or traumatic birth. There are also grief support groups for mothers who have suffered miscarriage or lost a baby.”

How do people make contact with Nurture?

“We work alongside GPs, health professionals, maternity hospitals, holistic therapy centres, local HSE primary care teams, adult mental health services, public health nurses and child services,” says Irene.

“We advise any woman who feels she is struggling to contact her GP or Public Health Nurse and Nurture on 01-8430930. Nurture’s counselling fee is €40 per session but for those who cannot afford this it will be subsidised by the charity so this can be reduced.”

To subsidise these supports, fundraising is vital.

On May 3, Irene brought Nurture outdoors and turned Red Island purple with a photoshoot in the playground on Red Island, Skerries, featuring local volunteers, mothers and babies all sporting their Nurture t-shirts. Following the photoshoot, everyone warmed up at the Nurture coffee morning in Ollies Place, New Street, Skerries, cakes, bakes and delights aplenty! The next fundraiser is the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon on June 6.

Lusk Community Council in consultation with Fingal County Council is now seeking Expressions of Interest for potential users of a new community facility for Lusk.

Situated on the corner of The Square and adjoining the access route to the old graveyard and Saint Macullins Centre, the Cottage consists of two medium sized rooms and a small kitchenette as well as storage and toilet facilities. It will be suitable for a wide range of uses and can accommodate a maximum of 50 persons between the two rooms.

This is the Country Crest Farm Shop’s favourite time of year when the first of the locally grown fruit and vegetables are being delivered to the shop, located at Jones Garden Centre.

Everything from strawberries and rhubarb, to peppers, cucumbers, scallions, tomatoes and new season potatoes are arriving from local growers in North County Dublin.

Black Raven Pipe Band Understanding the Bagpipes The Bagpipes consist of the following components: The Bag, The Blowpipe, The Chanter, The Stocks and The Drones

The Bag

The bag must be an airtight chamber. The bag nowadays is typically made from a synthetic material capable of achieving an airtight seal. Not so long ago the bag was made of animal hide (and even today some pipers and pipe bands prefer using the animal-hide bags). The natural animalhide used for the bagpipes is slightly porous and therefore not completely airtight, so the bag must be prepared to ensure it becomes airtight. This is achieved by the process referred to as ‘dressing the bag’. A traditional method of ‘dressing the bag’ was to pour a substance such as syrup or honey (slightly heated to make it suitably viscous) into the bag and rub the bag vigorously from the outside until the syrupy substance has coated

the entire inside surface of the bag until all the pores were adequately sealed and the bag became airtight. The ‘dressing’ once applied had a limited life and the ‘dressing’ process has to be repeated at regular intervals to maintain airtightness. The duration of the life of the dressing can be affected by numerous conditions including the ambient temperature. For instance in warm weather the bag may ‘dry out’ and become porous and have to be re-dressed. If the bag is not sufficiently airtight

the piper will not be able to keep the bag filled with air thus result in unsteady blowing with consequent variations in tone and an unsteady drone and chanter sound. If the piper has to make great effort in blowing the bagpipes this will usually result in unsteady and generally poor quality piping.

The bag is fitted with a set of five ‘stocks’, one stock for each of the three drones, along with one for the blowpipe and one for the chanter.

Holes are cut in the bag at strategically located positions with the stocks tied into the holes and of course these tie-ins must also be airtight. The more complete and airtight all the connections are the easier it will be for the piper to concentrate on the fingering technique without having to think too much about the blowing.

An oft’ held misconception is that the bagpipes is played by the piper ‘pumping’ the bag under his/her arm. This is incorrect, the bag is kept full by the piper blowing lightly into the blowpipe thereby keeping the bag full under the arm.

Where a piper has to blow strongly and heavily into the bag is an indication that the bag and all other connections are not adequately airtight and is losing air unnecessarily and the result will be unsteady and inconsistent, not to mention poor performance.

Modern synthetic materials used for the bag of the bagpipes is in itself airtight and so the regular ‘dressing’ process is not required. This makes the maintenance of the bagpipes, in this regard at least, somewhat easier.

The Blowpipe The bag is filled with air by the piper blowing through the blowpipe. The blowpipe is fitted with a one-way valve so that when the piper blows air into the bag the air cannot return through the blowpipe. With a properly prepared set of pipes once the piper has initially filled the bag with air it should take very little blowing to maintain the consistent and regular sound required for good piping.

The Drones

Three Drones; one Bass Drone and two Tenor Drones.

The bagpipes contain a set of three drones, one ‘bass drone’ and two ‘tenor drones’. Each drone contains a ‘drone reed’ to produce a constant ‘bass’ and ‘tenor’ sound to compliment the notes from the chanter. The base drone and the tenor drones are respectively made up of three and two sliding sections. Each of the connections must be airtight while being capable of a sliding movement. The drones are ‘tuned’ so that a constant and unwavering bass and tenor sound is obtained, and this must match the pitch and general chanter sound. The tuning of the drones is achieved by a sliding the drone connections upwards or downwards to achieve the required sound and tuning effect. The tuning process can take some time to perfect and many factors can

influence this, such as the ambient weather, warm, cold, wet, dry etc. Also a ‘warming up’ period will be required before ‘final tuning’ takes place, and then how long the pipes is being played will also be a factor. This is why a piper or pipe band needs a considerable period of time to ‘tune up’ before taking part in any performance. When preparing for a competition for instance the skill will be for the pipe-major to get all the pipes, including the drones and chanter, in tune and ‘peaking’ at the optimum time for the performance.

Nevertheless when this is correctly achieved and a full pipe-corp, consisting of perhaps from eight to twenty eight pipers, backed up by a good drum corp, the sound will be stirring to the extent of raising the hair on the back of your neck.

The chanter is the component that creates the main notes of the tune. It contains eight noteholes. The holes are covered by four fingers of the lower hand, usually the pipers right hand, and three fingers and thumb of the top hand, usually the left hand. The thumb of the bottom hand and the little finger of the top hand is not used for making notes. The ‘chanter scale’ is from ‘Low G’ to ‘High A’, a little more than one octave.

Lusk burglaries on the rise

By Majella Biddulph Living in Lusk Village we are surrounded by the rolling countryside and situated only minutes from the many beaches that are available to us.

Lusk is a lovely, peaceful place to live while rearing your family. We are very lucky to live in such beautiful surroundings but there is a problem lurking underneath our idyllic rural setting.

Although there has been a drop of 14 per cent in the Dublin North Garda Division, the numbers of house burglaries are rising in Lusk each year with an increase of 8.33 per cent in the last year alone.

With the closure of Rush Garda Station in 2012, Lusk has to monitor the whole area as a result. We have been left with an under resourced, inadequate Garda service which is unacceptable with our rise in local crime.

The criminals know this and use it to their advantage. They can commit crimes while being sure that they will not get caught in the act. The M1 is only minutes away giving them an excellent means of escape.

The day of the opportunistic burglar is gone.

They now typically take their time driving around

an area identifying 10-12 houses that fit their criteria. Burglars operate in groups which make them feel more confident and menacing.

The average alarm doesn’t deter the new burglar as he will have all of the tools of the trade to break and enter in to most homes. Standard windows and doors are not sufficient in stopping burglars enter our homes.

As a result of this new more effective breed of burglar An Garda Siochana set up Operation Thor late last year investing five million euro to tackle the problem.

This operation aims to provide the gardaí with overtime, additional patrols, check points, rapid armed response units and public awareness measures. There were six arrests made in February this year under Operation Thor while stolen items including a motorbike were discovered in the raid.

Making it harder for the burglars to operate

in our area is vital to decreasing our crime rate in Lusk. Having your home broken in to is a scary prospect. We should all consider investing in burglar proof windows and doors. As this would be very costly there are other simple things we can do to prevent being burgled. Common sense comes in to play with just locking our doors and windows. How many of us have handles on our front doors that can be opened from the outside.

Many homes have had handbags and other items taken from their hall in the middle of the day.

There has been many reports of men walking from door-to-door wearing suits with clipboards trying door handles on their way.

Look around your house and gardens with a critical eye and you might be surprised by the smallest of things that can be done to improve your security.

Having a pet dog doesn’t guarantee that you won’t have a break-in but it certainly makes the burglar think twice when there is a barking dog making noise. Always report a crime to the gardai no matter how small as they can use the numbers to fight for extra gardai for the local station.

Work on Lusk Memorial begins

Lusk Community Council recently installed the first limestone panels for the 1916 Memorial in Lusk. The Memorial will feature the 1916 Proclamation and a dedication to the men and women of Lusk and Fingal who participated in the 1916 Easter Rising.

Good news for comic fans There was good news for comic fans recently courtesy of another FREE online service from Fingal Libraries.

‘Comic Plus’ containing thousands of digital graphic novels and comics with titles from publishers such as IDW and Manga, beame available to Fingal Library members from May 1.

The site contains material suitable for members ranging in age from young children up to 18-year- olds.

With no more waiting for titles and no limits on the number of titles, members can check out the service is available anytime, anywhere, once you are a library member and have a Web connected device.

The ‘Comic Plus Library Edition’ App is available for download for Apple devices, with an App for Android devices expected later in the year.

Betty Boardman, Acting County Librarian, said: “Fingal County Council’s library service is delighted to be launching this new development for its members, making thousands of digital novels and comics available on its website free of charge. “Graphic novels and comics are popular with all ages and many titles span the generations. “Graphic novels in particular have become very popular at our libraries as they are highly visual, cross cultural, innovative and varied in theme.”

Ms Boardman added: “Making comics available online will open them up to a whole new audience, who can then be introduced to the many other services available from Fingal Libraries.”

The addition of this service will further enhance Fingal Libraries eService collection. It currently provides eBooks, eAudiobooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines, eCourses and eLanguages as well as a number of online databases.

Co-habiting couples

By Dave Kavanagh Recent events have again highlighted the importance of co-habiting couples – couples living together but not married – understanding how they are treated in certain circumstances.

Whether we like to consider it or not, the untimely death of one partner in a co-habiting relationship, can have huge, adverse consequences on the surviving partner. Of course, despite alarming statistics, nobody ever expects it to happen to them.

Example: Let’s take the situation where John and Mary bought a house together and have a joint mortgage. In the event of John’s death, the mortgage protection plan will usually clear the outstanding mortgage. With the house held in “joint tenancy” (as it usually would be with a mortgage) John’s half-ownership of the house passes to Mary.

However, under Capital Acquisition Tax (CAT) rules, Mary is classed as a stranger and therefore, only has a tax-free threshold of €15,075. If the house is valued at the time of John’s death at €300,000, then Mary is deemed to have inherited €150,000.

to pay tax at 33 per cent on the balance, leaving her with a tax bill of €44,525. If Mary satisfies three conditions, then she can be exempt from the tax.

The conditions are: 1. She must have lived with John in the property for at least three years prior to his death.

2. She must continue to live in the property for a further six years.

3. She must have no other interest in any other residential property (including abroad).

In many of these circumstances, the lack of planning ahead may result in having to sell the property to pay the tax bill and avoid interest or penalties.

There are ways that this can be avoided by either increasing the mortgage protection policy to allow for the tax (although this may leave the surplus amount also liable for tax) or taking out “life of another” plans on each other.

The reason for this is that when a life policy is paid out, whoever paid the premiums will dictate whether or not there is a liability.

Are your children addicted to the internet?

With kids aged eight to 18 spending on average 44.5 hours per week in front of screens, parents are increasingly concerned that screen time is robbing them of real world experiences.

Studies have shown nearly 23 per cent of youths report that they feel “addicted to video games and almost one out of every 10 youth gamers shows enough symptoms of damage to their school, family, and psychological functioning to merit serious concern.”

Whisk together all wet ingredients then sieve in the flour and whisk in to remove lumps. Then ad sugar and mix.

Both approaches invite trouble. Your child will internalise the message that they are bad; they will look at you as the enemy instead of an ally; and they will suffer real withdrawal symptoms of nervousness, anger and irritability.

Junsa Taekwondo members travel to Norway

Commemorative Cycle marks 1916 Centenary Celebrations in Fingal

Junsa Taekwondo recently travelled to Norway to take part in a high performance training camp where they trained with some of the best Olympic Taekwondo athletes in the world.

Those in attendance were national team players from Norway, Greece, Iran, USA and the UK. This training camp was outstanding, where the club learned new tactics and skills to add to its repertoire.

The host, Master Geir Øien, treated the Lusk-based club as part of his family, providing fabulous training and great advice and tips.

Junsa Taekwondo is committed to providing a safe and happy training environment for both beginners and elite practitioners of this very special martial art.

unday, April 24, was, to the day, the 100th anniversary of the start of the 1916 Rising.

It had a special significance for the people of Fingal. It was exactly the right day to celebrate the achievements of Volunteers of the Fifth Battalion – the men, who fought with distinction during Easter Week, under the command of Commandant Thomas Ashe.

There were many commemorations of the event throughout Fingal on the day - in Lusk, in Swords, in Donabate and elsewhere.

It is well known that the Fingal Volunteers went everywhere on bicycles during the Easter Week campaign.

To commemorate this particular fact, Geraldine Stout, whose uncle, Joseph Thornton, of Skerries, took part in the Rising, decided to organise a re-enactment of the event. She asked as many relatives of the original participants as she could find, to take part.

Twenty-five brave cyclists answered the call. Apart from Thorntons, one counted Brogans, Kellys, Doyles, Seavers and Derhams among them.

The lesser able ones followed in their cars.

The cycle was led off from Skerries into a southerly breeze by Geraldine. Their first stop was in Lusk, where they picked up a few more comrades. They then headed on past Turvey and into Swords, where their numbers grew again. At Rathbeale, they took another break, before finally reaching their destination at Knocksedan.

Here, on a bridge over the River Ward, a plaque, installed in 1991, marks the spot where the Fifth Battalion assembled before starting off on their campaign.

Geraldine Stout had organised a wreath-laying ceremony there and gave the honour of laying the wreath to Tom Seaver, whose father, Tommie, was one of the Volunteers who stood at the spot 100 years ago.

Tom gave a short oration and thanked Geraldine and all the participants for honouring the Fingal Volunteers in a most fitting manner.

Later on, that afternoon, the female cyclists in the group took part in Rothaíocht na mBan, in Swords. This event celebrated the part the women of Fingal Cumann na mBan played as a support group to the Volunteers during Easter Week.

Gold and silver lining at Leinster Schools Finals It was a very successful day for our club members at the Leinster Schools Finals Day 2 in Santry.

Sarah Derham (Dominican College) recorded a schools’ national record to take gold in the pole vault while Meave Flynn (St Joseph’s Rush) jumped her highest this year to take silver in her competition.

Later, Adam McNally (Lusk CC) took gold in the pole vault for the first time with a new Personal Best. They all qualified for the nationals in Tullamore.

The relay team from St Joseph’s, Rush finished a very respectable sixth, less than two seconds behind the winners.

Earlier in the day Bernard Hollands (Donabate CC) finished a respectable fourth in the hurdles. Kevin Halpin (St Joseph’s) was our other participant in the pole vault. The experience gained will no doubt stand to him as he heads into the Dublin Track & Field Championships.

Huge credit to the coaches of the club and the teachers of the schools represented for their consistent dedication to the pupils.

Schools athletics in Leinster is the highest of all the provinces in Ireland and to reach the finals is admirable.

Dreams can only be achieved through hard work and you provide the platform to make these dreams happen. Next year’s competition promises to bring more success to our schools and colleges.

Big success at North Leinster Schools event

This is a special year for Ireland and the Dublin City Marathon medal is a special one too. Will you have one around your neck in October?

Lusk AC has just commenced training for all races leading to the marathon.

If you’re running the marathon this year or would like to, you are invited to join the Lusk AC group who will be taking part in the race. They do their long runs on Sunday mornings at 8am from Lusk National School.

Congratulations to our junior athletes who competed amazingly at the North Leinster Schools Day 1 and 2.

For Lusk AC athletes there was great success with five gold and two silver medals picked up for their respective schools.
