Community groups work together on Thomas Ashe film

Power Drama School, Lusk Heritage Group, Corduff National School and the Black Raven Pipe Band have come together to produce and organise the launch of a new short film which includes a reenactment of the closing summaries at the inquest into the Death of Thomas Ashe in 1917. Thomas Ashe was Principal of Corduff National School from 1908-1916. He established the Black Raven Pipe Band and was a founding member of Round Towers Gaelic and Hurling Club. In 1916 he was appointed as commandant of the Fifth Battalion of the Irish Volunteers and played a leading role in the fighting in Fingal and in particular, at the battle of Ashbourne during the Easter rebellion. After the 1916 Rising, Thomas Ashe was arrested for his activities, court-martialled and sentenced to death along with Eamon De Valera. 4

The sentence was later commuted to penal servitude for life. A little over a year later he was released as part of a general amnesty. Thomas Ashe was re-arrested in August 1917 and accused of making a speech that the authorities claimed was seditious. He was sentenced to two years’ hard labour. While in Mountjoy Prison he objected to the prison conditions and went on hunger strike. On Tuesday, September 25, 1917, only 14 days into his prison sentence, Thomas Ashe died in the Mater Hospital. Two days after his death an inquest was opened to examine the circumstances surrounding his death. The evidence lasted for 11 days and the verdict of the jury is now a part of our Irish history. The idea for the short film came about when Aidan Arnold who, 30 years ago while browsing through an old second hand bookshop, came

across a booklet entitled ‘The Death of Thomas Ashe, Full report of the inquest’. It was published by J. M. Butler of 41 Amien Street in 1917. This was a word for word record of the 11 days of evidence given at the inquest into the death of Thomas Ashe. Aidan attended Corduff National School. He wrote a play entitled ‘The Legacy of Ashbourne’, based on this detailed record of the inquest and the play was performed in Murtagh’s pub 30 years ago. With the centenary of Thomas Ashe’s death approaching in 2017, Lusk Heritage Group wanted to create more awareness of the circumstances surrounding his death which are not widely known. Thomas Ashe also played a key role in the Battle of Ashbourne in 1916. Aidan contacted Loraine Power from Power Drama School about the possibility of collaborating together on the project. As Thomas Ashe was an educator, Loraine had the idea of getting the young people from Power Drama School involved in making the new short film. It was a big undertaking for the two lead actors – Kerry Bellew and Georgia McMahon - as they had a lot of dialogue to learn for the court scene but they both rose to the challenge and gave very compelling performances as Timothy Michael Healy who appeared for Thomas Ashe’s next of kin and Henry Hanna, appearing for the Crown. The City Coroner Dr Louis A Byrne (Sorcha O’Connell) presided over the Inquest. The film opens with a short

introduction to Thomas Ashe. Swords Courthouse was hired for the filming of the re-enactment of the closing summaries of the inquest. The film ends with a beautiful recital of Thomas Ashe’s poem – ‘Let me Carry your Cross for Ireland, Lord’ and the wonderful music of the Black Raven Pipe Band. Power Drama School would like to thank Lusk Heritage Group, Corduff National School, the Black Raven Pipe Band, Swords Courthouse and all the young people involved in making the production. It was a great experience and is wonderful for the community to cooperate on such an important joint cultural and artistic project. Corduff National School will host the launch of the film, ‘The Inquest into the Death of Thomas Ashe’, on Friday, May 27th at 8pm.

Seamus Ennis Arts Centre hosts 1916 Song Project

Some of those who took part in the 1916 Song Project concert. On April 23, the Seamus Ennis Arts Centre hosted the 1916 Song Project concert. It was a national research and performance project devised and produced by Michael Fortune and Aileen Lambert for the 1916 Commemoration Programme and featured some of the country’s most respected traditional singers and songwriters. The concert showcased a new body of songs in the traditional style relating to themes, events and

figures connected to the Easter Rising. The singers - Paul O’Reilly, Rosie Ní Gallóglaigh, Sandra Joyce, John Tunney, Jerry O’Reilly, Fergus Russell, Paddy Berry, Aileen Lambert and Larry Joy - worked together since August 2015 to research and compose the new body of songs that commemorate the events of 1916. Sadie McCann-McCrohan RIP By Robert Hand On Easter Monday, the many cousins of our branch of the McCann clan buried their clan matriarch. Sadie McCann-McCrohan was 94-years-of-age and enjoyed good health until very recently. Sadie was the last nephew/niece from our branch of the McCann clan of Lieutenant John/Sean/Jack ‘Rover’ McCann who was tortured and killed by Crown forces on November 22, 1920 in revenge for Bloody Sunday, that was the previous day. Her uncle James [Reg. no. 9769], Rover’s brother, was KIA at 21 years on 9/12/1914, one of the earliest casualties of WW1 fighting in the 1st Battalion of the [Ulster] Royal Irish Rifles, having previously served in

where there was significant activity in Easter 1916, performed in a range of singing styles on a variety of different subjects. The project was part of Fingal County Council’s Centenary Programme, which saw over 50 lectures, film screenings, performances, re-enactments, talks and exhibitions cumulate in a special Commemorative Day in Swords on April 24.

India and Aden. His body was not recovered. Rover served as a volunteer under Thomas Ashe at Ashbourne while a member of the Fingal Brigade. His bomb making skills, learnt from handling dynamite with his work in the quarry, lead directly to the surrender of the RIC barracks. Mills Bombs were the difference between success and failure as between Ashbourne and the opposite result at Mount Street Bridge. That and leadership! Rover’s and Sadie’s father Daniel McCann, my grandfather, are buried side by side close to the Lusk Round Tower in the large McCann plot. Sadie is survived by her son John and daughter Mary and many many grandchildren and great grandchildren, including the children and grandchildren of her daughter Teresa who died tragically. Her nephews and nieces including the many McCanns, the Hands, the Harkins, Clarkes and the Dalys all attended at Ardee. On this auspicious Easter Monday, it was fitting that Sadie was laid to rest with a definite feeling of Peace, Reconciliation and Gathering that was so clearly present in that so peaceful Ardee graveyard! Old Fingal IRA Commemoration held

The Fingal Old IRA held its 2016 Centenary Commemoration ceremony on Easter Sunday, with a ceremony at St. Patrick’s Church, Donabate, followed by a parade to the old cemetery. One of the highlight events of the Fingal 2016 Centenary Programme, the ceremony commemorated the Fingallians who took part in the 1916 Rising and, in particular, the Battle of Ashbourne. Following the ceremony by Fr Pat Hannion at St. Patrick’s Church, the Black Raven Pipe Band led a parade from the Beaverstown Road to the Old Cemetery. A variety of family activities were then held including a reading of the proclamation, a performance of the ‘Last Post’, the traditional final salute to the fallen and the rising of the Irish flag. The ‘Easter 1916: Fingal Fights for Freedom’ exhibition was then opened in the Parish Hall and there were performances by Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society and Tower Singing Circle’s production of ‘Resurrection’ and ‘Donabate Reminisces’. Noel McAllister, chairman of Fingal Old IRA, said: “The part that Fingal played in the fight for Irish freedom is a unique story that needs to be told. “This annual commemoration by the Fingal Old IRA honours the legacy of the Fifth Battalion and secures its place in the memory of future generations. “In this particularly significant year, we are delighted that so many residents of Fingal joined us in commemorating the rich legacy of Fingal and the birth of the Irish State.”

Parish of St MacCullin welcomes new priest

Father Eoin McCrystal with Pope Francis. The parish of St MacCullin in Lusk has a new priest. Fr Eoin McCrystal is a priest of the Dublin Diocese and was ordained in July 1990. He holds a BA in Philosophy and Politics from UCD and a STB Theology degree from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. His first appointment after ordination was as full-time priest teacher in St Finian’s Community College, Swords and Parish Chaplain to Brackenstown Parish, Swords. In 1996 Fr Eoin was appointed full-time National Chaplain to the Young Christian Workers’ Movement in Ireland for four years and he continues in this role in a part time capacity to this day. In 2000 he began a six year appointment as Curate in St Columba’s Parish, Iona Road, which covers the Glasnevin/Drumcondra area of the city. Archbishop Martin then asked Fr Eoin to move to Holy Trinity Parish, Donaghmede as Curate with responsibility for the new developing areas of the parish called Clongriffin and Balgriffin. He was also asked to see if there was parental interest in a new Catholic primary school. With a very positive response from parents, Fr Eoin opened St Francis of Assisi Pimary School in September 2008, with Assumpta Kerins as Principal. At this time, the Archbishop appointed Fr Eoin as Parish Priest of the newly designated Holy Trinity Parish, Donaghmede-ClongriffinBalgriffin. In his final year in the parish, Fr Eoin was appointed Moderator of the two neighbouring parishes of St Paul’s, Ayrfield and Holy Trinity Parish. In the summer appointments of 2015 Fr Eoin was released from parish commitments for a four-month period of sabbatical leave prior to taking up a new appointment as Administrator in the parish of St MacCullin, Lusk in succession to Fr Paul Hampson. In addition to his parish duties in Holy Trinity Parish, Fr Eoin also held the position of Vicar Forane for the Howth Deanery for two terms. His hobbies include walking, reading and watching sports.

Farrell raises local issues at council level

Lusk-based councillor Ken Farrell (Lab) has raised a number of issues with Fingal County Council on behalf of local residents. At a recent meeting of the Balbriggan/Swords Area Committee, Cllr Farrell asked the council to report on when the playground at Chapel Farm, Lusk, will be brought up to standard as a priority. Cllr Farrell also asked Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid to indicate as to why the receiver was not instructed to do so before the estate was taken in charge as “agreed with the residents in lieu of commitments given by the council”. In his report, Mr Reid said the procurement process for necessary remedial works for the playground has begun and the work is being prioritised. “As regards the involvement of the receiver in this matter, he advised us that he did not have sufficient funds at his disposal to carry out these works and we made alternative arrangements to take the open spaces in charge,” Mr

Reid told Cllr Farrell. Cllr Farrell also asked the chief executive to indicate when the footpath which runs through the open space adjacent to the football pitch at Dun Emer, Lusk will be brought up to standard. Mr Reid said these works will commence once ground conditions dry out and construction is expected to be completed during the summer months 2016. Cllr Farrell has also asked the council to contact landowners in order to have the trees on Chapel Farm Drive cut back. The council said its Operations Department will examine this matter and, if necessary, will issue the appropriate notice to landowners. Separately, Cllr Farrell has called on the council to make arrangements to have the grass area at the junction of Chapel Farm Road and Chapel Farm Mews, Lusk developed into a flat structure at this location. The council said it was agreed at a recent Deputations meeting with Chapel Farm Residents’ Association that this proposal will be included for consideration as part of a future works programme, which is subject to funding and resources being available. Meanwhile, Cllr Farrell also tabled a motion with regards to the Village Scheme in Lusk. Cllr Farrell asked Mr Reid to give a report on what progress has been made with regard to the Taking In Charge of the Village Scheme with particular reference to the following: (A) The Class 1 Open Space on the Relief Road, Lusk; and (B) The Class 2 Open Space in the estate. In its report, the council said it has been engaged in extensive discussions with the relevant developer in an effort to resolve the outstanding compliance and snag issues with a view to bringing the Class 1 and Class 2 open spaces in this development up to the necessary standard for taking in charge. “We expect that these outstanding works will be completed in the short term,” the council said. Mortgage query answered Question: If a borrower gives a mortgage to a bank and the bank sells that mortgage can the buyer of the mortgage enforce it against the borrower? Answer: A recent Supreme Court judgment has offered clarification on this question. The court set out some procedural steps that the buyer of such a mortgage must take before that buyer can enforce the mortgage. The court also confirmed that the borrower does not benefit from any defects in such steps. One of the steps requires the purchaser to be registered as owner of the security. Section 62(6) of the Registration of title Act 1964, as amended, provides that: “On registration of the owner of a charge on land... the registered owner of the charge shall, for the purpose of enforcing his charge, have all the rights and powers of a mortgagee under a legal mortgage, including the power to sell the estate or interest which is subject to the charge.” Sales of loans by banks are a common feature in Ireland. The assignment of security forms an integral part of such transactions. While the judgment adds certainty for the purchasers of such loans the procedural steps required by the judgment may cause some delay. Sports clubs came together beside the Class 1 open space to highlight their ongoing concerns about the delivery of the main recreational hub for Lusk. Children from Fingal Triathlon, Lusk Athletics, Round Towers GAA Club, Lusk United Soccer Club and the Hills Cricket Club are all supporting the Lusk Community 2020 Sports Plan for Lusk, which envisages major shared recreational sports facilities on the Class 1 open space. There is both anger and frustration for the residents in Lusk who have purchased their houses many years ago, yet have so far been deprived of the recreational open space that was to be provided with these houses. The Lusk Community 2020 Sports Plan Committee is highlighting this unacceptable situation to Fingal County Council and seeking that the Class 1 open space is taken in charge and developed as a priority.

The Fingal Film Festival is now open for submissions in Animation – Feature – Short – Student - Documentary – Scannan Gaeilge Is Fearr – International - 1916 films related. The fifth instalment of Fingal Film Festival’s annual event will take place in Movies@swords, Pavilions Centre, Swords, from September 30 to October 2. “The 2015 event saw bigger screening and workshop attendances, proving that the festival is the best independent festival to have your work seen by large audiences and is a fantastic platform for emerging filmmakers from Ireland and abroad,” says Liz Kenny, the festival’s managing director. Creative director Dave Byrne says: “Our focus for 2016 is to create a festival that is diverse in content, offering an interactive experience with filmmakers and cinema goers alike during this year’s event, a challenge I and the team are looking forward to.” As part of the centenary celebrations in 2016, the festival will be dedicating a slot in the schedule for all subjects relating to the 1916 Rising. Stars in their eyes! Places to fill for summer camps Summer camps will take place in Fingal.

Children’s performing arts network, Starcamp, is reminding parents that plans are advancing for

its six Fingal summer camps which take place during July and August. Dates and venues where the

camps will be held are: St George’s National School, Balbriggan (8-12 August); Rush & Lusk Educate

Together (18-22 July); Malahide Community School (18-22 July); Skerries Educate Together School (25-29 July) and Old Borough School Hall, Swords (11-15 July and 15-19 August). Supported by banana importer Fyffes, the week-long camps for boys and girls aged 4-12 are designed to teach performance and build confidence amongst those taking part through song, dance, drama and games. Lusk Freewheelers mark Rising centenary Lusk Freewheelers Cycling Club recently marked the centenary of the Easter Rising by releasing an official commemorative club t-shirt to remember Thomas Ashe and the vital part he played in the Lusk community. Local businesses, the Windsor Motor Group, The Loch Bar, Gino’s Take Away, Neary’s of Lusk, Howley’s, Ridgeway’s Barbers and East Coast Blinds funded the project and the club would like to thank each of them most sincerely for their support. The launch took place at Lusk Utd’s clubhouse bar. Lusk Freewheelers CC’s first team event as a club took place recently in the Naul. The distance covered on the day was 50km with a few testing hills along the way. A very enjoyable day was had by all. Meanwhile, the club is always looking for new members. Please contact Robert on 083-8135136 if you’re interested in joining. Distances vary from 10km to 50km and all abilities are catered for. New Mercedes-Benz E-Class arrives on the market designed for long journeys, heated armrests in the doors and centre console and a choice of 64 interior LED lighting colours. Optionally available are two high-resolution 12.3inch display screens (a first in the segment) and three different wide-screen instrument cluster styles. A wide choice of materials and colour combinations gives owners scope to ‘individualise’ the interior. It is the first car ever to feature touch-sensitive finger swipe buttons on the steering wheel which the driver can use to control the infotainment system while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. Mobile phones with the inductive charge facility can be charged and connected with no need for cables or a telephone holder. Model & Price In Ireland, focus is being placed on the E220d Avantgarde Automatic at €52,850 ex works – which represents a price decrease of €850 compared to the previous model. Also available to order will be Exclusive (€55,210) and AMG versions (€57,650). Available also is an E350d version at €66,900. Further model variants to follow in time will include an E350e hybrid and a powerful V6 E350d. Engine Aerodynamically, it has a drag coefficient of 0.23. Under the bonnet, a completely new engine on which Mercedes-Benz spent some €2.6 billion in development costs delivers a 17% weight reduction, lower fuel consumption (3.9 litres/100Km combined), lower C02 (102g/km), increased horsepower (194 HP), 400Nm of torque and lower road tax (€190). Driver Assistance Systems Amongst its standard fitments is Active Brake Assist, providing support during emergency braking, Attention Assist with adjustable sensitivity to alert the driver to inattentiveness or drowsiness and Crosswind Assist, which mitigates the effects of strong crosswinds. An optional Driver Assistance package offers a further suite of safety features that Mercedes-Benz claims makes the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in its class, one being a system that moves the driver or front passenger away from the danger zones when an imminent lateral collision is detected. Another safety innovation is a sound warning that triggers reflexes and prepares occupants if the risk of a collision is detected. Easy Banana & Blueberry Bread Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

285g/10oz plain flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp salt 110g/4oz butter, plus extra for greasing 225g/8oz caster sugar 2 free-range eggs 4 ripe bananas, mashed ½ cup of blueberries 85ml/3fl oz buttermilk (or normal milk mixed with 1½ tsp lemon juice or vinegar) 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. 3. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. 4. Add the eggs, mashed bananas, blueberries, buttermilk and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Fold in the flour mixture. 5. Grease a 20cm x 12.5cm/8in x 5in loaf tin and pour the cake mixture into the tin. 6. Transfer to the oven and bake for about an hour, or until well-risen and golden-brown. 7. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin for a few minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving. TIP: Great for lunch snacks. Slice up once cooled and freeze in portions. Obesity in our pets Is my pet overweight?

If you are unsure that your pet is overweight then he/she probably isn’t. The best way to check is to simply look. All dogs and cats should have some shape to their bodies with a thinner waste than torso. Run your hands down along their chest. You should be able to easily feel their ribs without having to put too much pressure on. If you are finding it difficult to feel their ribs then they may be overweight. To find out how overweight they are, you then move to their waist. Can you see a visible wasteline? If not, then yes our pet is overweight.

Main causes of obesity

The main reason is over consumption of food. This maybe extra treats, table scraps or just too much of their normal dinner. Like humans, all animals have their recommended daily amount of food they should be fed. This can be found on any bag of food depending on the weight of the animal. But this is a full day’s amount of food so it doesn’t include the extra treats. To add the daily treat that you give, make sure to take away from their daily dinner. For example, Fido’s recommended intake for the day is 200 grams. He gets two dental sticks a day, so when it comes to measuring out his dinner

he should only get 160 grams, working out that each dental stick is roughly 20 grams. This of course is a rough calculation and you should check your treat packs for the proper measurements. Also, feed for the weight your dog should be, not when he is if he is overweight. Table scraps work the same way, but they are not as easy to work out and also most human food is higher in salt than dog food and should always be avoided. Just stick with the dog food. Neutering: When someone says “neutering causes obesity’’, they are not entirely wrong. But the reason it causes increase in weight is because your pet has had an operation to remove a body organ, so now he/she has one less organ that needs energy. After you get your pet neutered take one teaspoon of nuts away from their dinner. This will prevent her/him gaining weight. On April 2 Junsa travelled to Ashbourne to compete in a championships with teams from all over Ireland. In total there were approximately 22 teams.

Junsa had some fantastic results and finished 3rd place overall team, but most importantly all players enjoyed the day and left their coach feeling very proud. On April 9 Junsa was on the move again this time to Bonn in Germany where one of the clubâ€™s top stars, Conor Deery, competed in the senior category of male 54kg. While Conor is still only a junior, this

gave the club the opportunity to give him the experience of a senior division. There was no medal this time but Junsa made its mark in Europe with Conor nearly causing an upset by being such a strong opponent. Eventually he lost out by a narrow scoreline, 8-5, and the coach was very proud once again.

The first and second year boysâ€™ basketball teams at Lusk Community College travelled to Carrickmacross, County Monaghan recently to play in the North East Leinster Regional Basketball Finals. The first years played Scoil Ui Mhuiri, from Dunleer. It was a tight game throughout each quarter but the Louth team pulled ahead in the

last minute to win by three points. The second year team had more success on the day. They played Largy College, from County Monaghan. From tip off the Lusk Community College boys looked stronger with excellent defence and rebounding, great shooting and frequent fast breaks. Well done lads!

Latest news from Lusk Athletics Club

Lusk NS athletes celebrate their triumph in Santry.

Lusk National School are champions Lusk National School has a long and successful history when it comes to schools’ athletics. You only have to take a look at the pictures in the school corridor to see signs of this. So when the athletics in Santry comes around each year the expectations are high. However, despite sending extremely talented athletes over the last few years, the school fell agonisingly short of success. But that all changed recently when Lusk NS came away with the top prize: BEST OVERALL SCHOOL. Lusk NS also collected BEST GIRLS’ AWARD which is an extremely difficult prize to win such is the standard of girls’ athletics in Dublin. Lusk Athletics Club would like to congratulate the entire team on this huge achievement, and particularly the teachers who have given freely of their time over the years. You are a big part of this great win. The club would also like to congratulate all the Lusk AC athletes who represented their school so well today. Well done.

Fit4Life Fit4Youth big day out The Fit4Life graduation.

April 9 was a very special day for the club when its Fit4Life and Fit4Youth groups completed their 5k Parkrun after a long, cold winter of training. It’s not easy to come to a club and ask to join when you see hundreds of people running around you but this is exactly what this group did. Now they are 5k runners and are valued members of Lusk AC. It’s only thanks to other members and volunteers of the club that a Fit4Life and Fit4Youth group can achieve their target and it is these people who encourage new people into the groups twice a year. Lusk AC would like to thank three of these people on this occasion. Frankie Hollands has seen a few groups through the programme but her energy continues to inspire this group each term. She was joined regularly by Caroline Cummins this year who has passed on her experience after completing the programme a couple of years ago. Special thanks also to others who stepped in to cover training nights. The Fit4Youth group is still in its early stages of development. Lusk AC feels this is a very important area that must continue to grow if we are to fight childhood obesity and anti-social behaviour in Lusk. This group did themselves proud with very impressive results. It is only thanks to Ian Byrne and Rodrigo Lara that this group exists and the time they put into the group showed. Some of group found it difficult while others found it slightly easier to complete the 5k. All of you did the hard work over the winter and now that summer is almost here your running will become much more enjoyable. This is not the end of your running - it is only the beginning. Lusk locals who took part in the Dunboyne 4-Mile.

Dublin City Marathon 2016 Do you want to run this year’s Dublin City Marathon? Do you have friends who want to run the marathon with Lusk AC this year? The club’s 26-week training plan begins on May 2 and will take in all the races of the Dublin race series along the way. However entry to these races is not necessary. Lusk AC will be training on the following evenings each week, Monday: Hill Sprints, Ardgillan (for all); Tuesday: Members Only Training; Thursday: Members Only Training; Saturday: Parkrun (for all); and Sunday: Long Slow Run (for all). The Sunday runs will be divided into two groups. Group 1 is for runners planning on a sub 4-hour race and Group 2 is for everyone planning 4 hours 15 minutes plus.

Dunboyne 4-Mile Road Race It was a fast and furious race and the Lusk AC members made us proud. Thomas Lara ran brilliantly in the junior race finishing 3rd against the defending champion. For sure he’ll win it next year. Max Lara ran superbly to finish well inside top 20 in an unbelievably fast race for boys. Daisy Lara also ran a great race finishing very well up the placings. In the adult race it was new Personal Bests (PB) by over a minute for Eamon Caffrey and Colm McNally. Meanwhile, Stephen Murtagh and Rodrigo Lara ran faster than ever before over four miles. This fast, flat course has no rest and

is flat out all the way leaving the Lusk AC men shocked but very happy with their results. We say it every year that everyone needs to do this race as it is one of the best races to be part of. Hopefully we will see everyone out there next year.

Skerries Beach Races 2016

The annual Skerries beach race kicked off the juvenile mini series. The conditions were not at all favourable. However, the Lusk AC Juveniles ran their hearts out from under 8 to Under 16 level. Well done all and the very best of luck with the remaining races. LUSK LOCAL-MAY
