Share the love by not sharing Covid 19 Well what can we say,tighter Covid 19 restrictions have come into force in Dublin City and county in an effort to stem rising levels of the virus.The new rules came into force in the city and the surrounding county recently and all because some of us became too far too complacent about following the HSE advice. For the next few weeks, people will be discouraged from leaving the city and county unless for essential reasons.The one plus in all this is we should shop locally and ensure local jobs. However we need to strictly following the Government rules.Once again we are being asked to work from home where possible and only to make essential journeys on public transport. In Dublin city visitors to private homes and gardens should be limited to a maximum number of six from one other household.There are to be no organised indoor gatherings and outdoor gatherings are to be up to a maximum of 15.

Restaurants and pubs that had been serving food will only be allowed to cater outdoors, to a maximum of 14 people, or provide a take-away service. Maybe this is the sharp shock we all needed to remind us about the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keep our distance when meeting others. So, lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as possible and stay safe. We all have mothers, children, spouses, partners and family we love and do not want to see ill, so please, please lets share the love by not sharing the Covid 19 virus and hopefully we can flatten the curve again soon. That way we can have a quality of life once again.Stay Safe and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all each other.

FCC help Active Age plan return to activities The Active Age for All Committee have been busy working on the logistics of returning to classes and with the help of a Grant from the Fingal Community Response to COVID-19 Funding Scheme (and administered by the Fingal County Council Community Culture and Sports Division) this is underway. It has allowed us to purchase a sanitising machine that makes our equipment ready for classes within ten minutes, sound equipment so all can hear the tutors and some other equipment that will allow us to develop online classes and meetings. Croquet: for AAfA has taken off at Newbridge House this year thanks to the hard work of our committee, especially Brid Hayes our Programme Organiser/ Croquet Leader and FCC Parks Dept. We now have nearly 30 men and women playing over two afternoons, Mondays and Wednesdays and it is great craic! Thanks to FCC Community Culture & Sports Division who have recently awarded us a grant to support our Croquet players. We have been able to buy our own croquet equipment. We would like to thank Croquet Ireland who have loaned us equipment to date. We look forward to many years of enjoyable playing! the peninsula and of course the wonderful walk at Newbridge Park, a gem. Bike a Bit: The Peninsula Pedallers were formed just over 2 years ago, after AAfA ran the first Community Cycle Course in the country in conjunction with Cycle Ireland and Fingal County Council. This group is now fully independent and have taken on a life of its own.

Mark Philbin has set up an informal WhatsApp -no committees, no work, just turn up! He encourages all to join if they wish to cycle. Fingal Festival of History 2020 launched in Swords Castle

The fourth annual Fingal Festival of History was launched by the Mayor of Fingal Cllr. David Healy recentlyThis year’s festival took place online with all talks being made available on the Fingal Libraries YouTube channel and social media platforms throughout the week of the festival.

The centenary of the Sack of Balbriggan takes place this year and provides the main theme for our Festival.This year’s programme again featured the History at the Castle day with a variety of speakers presenting on topics relating to the Sack of Balbriggan, the War of Independence and other political conditions relevant during this period of Ireland’s history.The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. David Healy said: “With everything that 4

has happened so far this year it is important to have a perspective on things. It is important that we take time to look back on our history, and it is fantastic that this year’s Festival of History will still be taking place. Like most events these days it will be done differently with all the history talks being recorded in the Chapel at Swords Castle. I would like to thank all of the Library staff of Fingal County Council who have made these talks possible.” Talks which were recorded in the Chapel at Swords Castle included a retrospective view of the Sack of Balbriggan from local historian and former Senior Librarian, Fingal libraries, Jim Walsh, events interlinked to

the Sack of Balbriggan by Cllr. Cathal Boland, how the Sack of Balbriggan inspired Brian Gallagher’s successful children’s novel Pawns and the life of Molly Adrian by Lou Boland. Declan Brady examined Local Government and the War of Independence in Fingal; historian Brian Hanley will discuss the role of the Tans and Auxiliary forces during the War of Independence and Brian Dorney will discuss how the War of Independence unfolded in Dublin.To conclude David O’Connor accompanied by Aidan and Helen Lawlor performed a selection of music and songs relating to the period and songs will include ‘The Bold Black and Tan’ and ‘Kevin Barry’.

Men’s Shed Has Bumper Harvest Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed has not yet been able to re-start our regular Thursday morning get-togethers in Donabate Sea Scouts’ Den, which were the mainstay of our pre-lockdown activities.

Although not as satisfying socially, we are continuing with our substitute online Zoom sessions very Thursday morning, while we prepare for face-to-face gatherings when conditions permit. We can now purchase the necessary sanitising equipment with grant-aid from Fingal County Council’s COVID-19 Emergency Funding Scheme. We wish to thank the Council, their Community Officer, Pat Lane, and our local representatives for their support and help. On the other hand, our allotment has been a hive of activity. Several members have been very busy since the allotment re-opened in May, after the general ten-week lockdown. In the past month, a bumper crop was harvested of cabbage, beetroot, lettuce, tomatoes, scallions, apples and berries of every variety. Unfortunately, our potatoes were less successful; drought and then blight took their toll. A garden shed, donated from a nearby allotment, has been disassembled, carried to our allotment and reconstructed – a veritable feat of engineering! Mulch has been spread on the pathways, manure on the beds and everything’s nearly ready for next year. Any men interested in joining us will be very welcome.

Leithinis receive grant from FCC for instruments

Erin McGahan, the Treoirí na Gaeilge (Irish Language Leader) on the Leithinis committee, is a proficient Irish-speaker. Erin is a classicallytrained violinist; with a vast interest in traditional Irish fiddle music.

In mid-September, Leithinis CCÉ was absolutely delighted to receive a grant from Fingal County Council, under their Community Activities Funding scheme, to buy instruments, including banjos and flutes, for our “Instrument Bank”. We also bought instruments with the money raised at the SuperValu bag pack and raffle, held in Donabate Mall in March, just before Covid-19 lockdown, where we had our “Tradathon”! These more expensive instruments

will be available for rent to people wishing to join our classes. To qualify for a mortgage, you must also qualify for cover

By Dave Kavanagh Every year, I see examples of people who have done all the right things in preparing for a mort-gage application, saved regularly to build a deposit, maintained stable employment, avoided tak-ing out new loans, conduct their current accounts efficiently etc. but sadly, don’t get to proceed with their house/apartment purchase (certainly not in the time frame they wanted to) because they cannot get their mortgage protection life cover accepted. So what would cause this to happen? When you apply for any form of life cover, it is underwritten based on your current and past medi-cal history. If someone has had any adverse medical conditions, if deemed serious enough, it could prevent cover being granted.

More commonly, someone may have been recommended by their GP or consultant to have certain tests done, but they never got around to it. This would usually prompt a life company to postpone a decision until the tests are done and satisfactory results are available. Depending on the type of tests, this could take months to get sorted. For these reasons, anybody planning to apply for a mortgage should research how they

will be underwritten for mortgage pro-tection at an early stage, particularly if they are concerned that a past medical issue could be a problem. In the current climate regarding Covid-19, many are even getting their mortgage protec-tion in place early and extending the term so that they are certain of having cover in place, when it is time to draw down the home loan. Once cover is in place, any new medical issues that arise will not be relevant.

Applications now open for financial assistance for Festivals in 2021 Fingal County Council’s Events Unit is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for financial assistance for Festivals and Events taking place in 2021.

Applications from groups and organisations seeking financial assistance from Fingal County Council’s Events Section for Festivals and Events taking place in 2021 will close on Tuesday, 15 December 2020, at 3pm. All applications should include a Covid compliance plan in adherence with current government guidelines.

Applications will be accepted for existing and/or new events or festivals which animate public spaces in creative and innovative ways, and which are focused on developing measurable tourism impacts in the County.

Interested parties must meet several other eligibility criteria including:Have a Covid-19 compliance plan in adherence with current government guidelines.Have a general audience appeal and be socially

inclusive.Clearly demonstrate potential to generate economic, social and/or cultural benefits.

Complement the County’s calendar of events in relation to attracting overseas’ visitors.Meet the Events Unit’s objective of compiling a varied programme of events throughout the year including content, seasonal and geographical spread.

Demonstrate financial sustainability and the capacity to develop the event,Have a clear PR and marketing plan including a social media strategy to actively promote the event.

Councillors approve €260,000 in grants to community groups in Fingal

The Green Flag Award is an international benchmark standard for parks and green spaces.

The Green Flag Award scheme is also operating across Australia, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.The green Flag Award scheme aims to encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways.The Green Flag Award Scheme encourages high environmental performance and good management. Parks and green spaces are judged against eight key criteria. Where certain criteria are not met, applicants can provide justifications that may be taken into account. What’s more, if management practice changes are in progress but not yet fully implemented, transitional phases

Councillors voted to approve substantial funding grants of just over €260,000 to 218 community groups and projects in Fingal at the monthly meeting of Fingal County Council on Monday. The grants will support communities in restarting activities and events that had been delayed due to COVID-19.This funding is set to go to groups and projects as follows:Covid-19 Grants: €74,424 granted to 76 groups, Youth Sports Grants: €115,200 granted to 96 groups, Summer Projects: €32,300 granted to 18 projects and Community Activity & Arts Grants: €38,331granted to 28 groups.The money will support specific groups and projects in Fingal communities in responding to the specific challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and will help them to hold events safely.Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. David Healy said after the approval: “It was important that this funding was approved as it provides the necessary supports for many community groups and projects across Fingal that have been hit hard by Covid-19. AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, said: “The funding that was approved on Monday night will help community groups to start to organise holding events and activities again, which had been postponed or cancelled over the past few months due to Covid-19 restrictions.This funding will go towards planning these activities in a safe way to continue to adhere to the guidelines while allowing the communities to restart their lives..”Margaret Geraghty, Director of Housing and Community for Fingal County Council said: “The past few months have been difficult times for communities and helping our citizens, young and old, to get involved in activities and events again is very important for overall mental health especially as we are facing into the winter months. Share your sporting memorabilia for a major Europe-Wide project EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum asks Irish people at home and abroad to dig out their sporting memorabilia and contribute to Europeana Sport, a European project on the culture and history of sport.People can share their stories and memorabilia online or work with a volunteer via the phone or email to tell their stories and send in their photos of past medals, jerseys, triumphs, programmes, hurley sticks, rugby boots, trophies, diaries etc. Those playing GAA abroad are particularly invited to participate, submitting photos of their teams, strips, community events and inter-country games.EPIC would particularly welcome hearing from anyone who has represented their parish, county or country abroad. Europeana Sport – Ireland’s Stories will show the richness and diversity of sporting history in Ireland and amongst the Irish overseas through the collection of stories and memorabilia from fans, players, enthusiasts, past sporting heroes and heroines.These memories will be juxtaposed with those of other countries across Europe showing our similarities and differences but through the decades our mutual love of sport in all its forms.Under the common banner of Europeana Sport - Ireland’s Stories, six coordinating partners from across Ireland - EPIC the Irish Emigration Museum, Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI), European Expo2020, Hunt Museum, University of Limerick Conference & Sports Campus and Fethard Horse Country Experience (FHCE) - are each undertaking campaigns focusing on specific sports including camogie, Gaelic football, horse-racing, fishing, martial arts, tag rugby, rowing.

The campaigns will engage with local communities and enhance local archives, at the same time as helping to improve the mental health of all involved.

Teen and Tween working together through Covid

The past few months have been so difficult for all of us and one group who have really struggled are our tween and teens. My own children struggled with their mental health with now, as cases grow and restrictions are being increased for Dublin again, who knows what lies ahead. We decided to give each of our children projects, to give them a sense of control in this unsettling time.For our son, who just started fifth year, a place to study and do homework is important. With 3 sisters to annoy him, his bedroom was the obvious choice. He picked a black grain wood desk and matching wardrobe from lovefurniture.ie. Due to Covid, we had to assemble it ourselves and this took him and his Dad 2 days which was great, because it gave him a sense of achievement when it was finished! Our 15yr old daughter really missed her friends and playing sports. We allowed her a TV and said she could redesign her bedroom, to give her a boost.

metallic paint and pale pink from Murtaghs of Drogheda. For the bed, she wanted a grown-up room. She helped put the bed together and made up her bed with accessories she picked herself. If we do have more restrictions coming, she will have a nice bedroom to be cooped up in! With our two youngest, 8 & 12yrs, we decided to let them loose on the garden furniture! We had some shabby patio furniture that really needed a lick of paint and we said they could pick the colour paint from Arro Balbriggan (who had a brilliant delivery service during lockdown!) and that’s how we ended up with a Cherry Blossom & Bright Pink table & chairs!

They were delighted with the end result and in fairness, it does look a lot better now! Already we are working on the living room and the youngest are heavily involved!

Wonderful Portrane Hockey teams clean sweep of the cups!

What a momentous day for Portrane Hockey Club as both the clubs Senior Ladies and Men competed in Cup finals, our Ladies in Leinster Vs UCD and our Men on the National stage in the Irish Hockey Trophy Final.First up was our young and emerging Ladies team who had too much guile and firepower for a shell shocked UCD team who perhaps had not the opportunity in recent weeks to prepare to the level Portrane did who overwhelmed UCD to race into a 4-0 lead early in the game and their was no way back for UCD after that with a hungry and determined Portrane outfit looking to attack and counter attack at every opportunity, further goals were added before half time as Portrane’s Midfield and Forward line wreaked havoc all over the pitch.

to run out 9-0 winners against a UCD team who despite the score line never gave up and played the game in the right spirit to the end.

Attention then turned to our Men who travelled to the superb facilities of Lisnagarvey Hockey Club, Hillsborough, Co. Down to take on the very experienced Belfast Harlequins. It was Portrane who made the early breakthrough with a great team goal from the in form Dylan Eustace and this was to be the half time scoreline.

The 3rd quarter was Portrane’s best spell with a superb goal from Stephen Rogan making it 2-0 before Sean Graham made it 3-0 .It looked like game over but one thing about Belfast Harlequins was they never threw in the towel and with 10 minutes to go they pulled a goal back from a short corner to make it 3-1 and within minutes they added another to make 3-2 with 5 minutes

remaining, Portrane were rattled and with the hooter gone to signal the end of the game Belfast Harlequins had forced a flurry of short corners and with the final strike of the game equalised.

The game was to be decided by the dreaded 1V1 penalties.And of course the drama was not to end there with both team’s out on their feet emotionally and physically for the 1V1s Daniel Graham was to emerge as one of the Portrane heroes keeping out 5 of Harlequins penalties and yet despite this Portrane also struggled in the penalties missing their opening 3 penalties until Captain fantastic Chris Neville who had an outstanding game throughout stepped up to cooly convert his 1V1 to bring utter relief to the Portrane team and small band of travelling but vocal supporters.
