With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we are beginning to see a new dawn for us all. However we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of Covid 19 nationally. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past few months. This means shopping locally so that our local businness need not only survive but our local employment is secured. Many of us can recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them. In other words all of you our readership. With some experts predicting a second phase we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Active Age â€“ Planning for the future

We are delighted to have been able to re-open some of our outside activities and there has been a great response to them. Croquet: We have the lawn in Newbridge House booked for Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1.30 -3.30. It is great to see this beautiful facility being used. Some additional existing members have signedup for this and a couple of new members have come along too. All in all, there is a full house! Our group seem to be happy - even if the sun is not shining. And a bit or rain does not put them off either. Many are glad to be able to get out from lockdown and to do something that respects the social distancing requirements too. Golf: This is the other activity that has been able to be completed. of lessons that were in train and as soon as golf opened up, some of our members were keen to get going again. When all who had signed up for the classes were contacted,there was a great response. Outdoors and social distancing were a real attraction. Donabate Golf Club facilitated this completion of the lessons so well. A big thank you goes to Fintan who was giving the class, and also to the Lady Captain Mary who had organized playing practice with some of the existing members. The Club has been so welcoming and thanks to everyone who made our members feel so comfortable.Planning for the future: The Committee will be reconvening shortly to put in place our Covid-19 Response Document. This is necessary for all groups to complete

before they can go back to running classes. We will be planning to make arrangements for our new season of classes that usually start in late September â€“ December. We will be working hand in hand with DPCC and meeting their requirements too. There are challenges to be met about registration and payment for classes but we believe that we can put on our thinking caps and come up with a resolution that will work. Members may have to fill out more paperwork than before but we will keep everyone informed as we make decisions about what we need to do. All decisions will be about working together and for each other so we can return to our greatly missed activities and social interaction.

Henchy – unacceptable power outages on the penninsula! Cllr Adrian Henchy recently raised the matter of the totally unacceptable levels of electrical power outages occurring on the Donabate Portrane Peninsula when he spoke at the area committee meeting of Fingal County Council recently. The Fianna Fail Councillor informed the committee that there has been 7/8 electrical outages within the past fews months and in June there was four . He said, “ This is having a devastating impact on local businesses and indeed in the current environment where a significant number of people who are now working at home and obviously dependent on a reliable ESB service. I am pleased to get unanimous support for this motion that Fingal County Council will write to the ESB for a full explanation and that the ESB at the next available opportunity will attend the council chamber. I also raised this at Mondays full council meeting within the Chief Executive report, and she has also agreed to raise this with the senior management of ESB. This matter must be addressed urgently as there is no way any other community is been impacted by this many electrical outages.”

Men’s Shed Still Going Strong despite Covid Restrictions

Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed has not given up in the face of Covid-19 restrictions. We’ve continued meeting and staying in touch with one another, albeit by Zoom, WhatsApp and good oldfashioned telephone. We even had a couple of meals together – socially distanced on Portrane Green enjoying Pipers’ fish and chips and the Irish summer! We also held two committee meetings by Zoom. Some members have joined Active Age for All for croquet in Newbridge at 1:30pm to 3:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Due to Covid-19, Fingal County Council closed all its allotments at the beginning of April. When they reopened in MidMay, ours was suffering from seven weeks of neglect and drought. Amazingly, we managed to rescue most of what had been planted in March through the Trojan efforts of a few stalwarts, while observing all Government and Irish Men’s Sheds Association guidelines on socially distancing and hygiene. everyday life, sport, farming, industry and crafts? The Fingal Heritage Network together with the Fingal Heritage Office wants to capture the snapshots of our past and the stories that they tell, for a virtual

exhibition.‘Originally planned as a live event we have had to adjust to

project for National Heritage Week 15-23 August, we will tell the stories of our past through a virtual exhibition on the Fingal County Council

website’.To take part we need your photographs and a short paragraph

of no more than 500 words telling the story behind the ‘snapshot’. You

Johnston Welcomes Interim Coastal Protection at Portrane

Corina Johnston, the Labour Party Local Area Representative for Donabate and Portrane, has welcomed the decision taken by Fingal County Council, to place the surplus seabees, from phase 2 of the temporary coastal protection scheme, at the rear of Pipers takeaway and the public toilets. Johnston said; “Whilst any additional protection is welcome, we are still deeply concerned that Fingal County Council have no plans at present to provide coastal protection from the surface water pipes at the rear of the Brook, to the Quay Road, and fronting Beach Lane at the Burrow. “Johnston added; “The area to the rear of Pipers takeaway, which includes the public

toilets, has been under continuous threat from coastal erosion in recent years. These interim measures follow repeated representations at local level by Cllr Robert O’Donoghue and I, and at national level by Duncan Smith TD who has raised this issue on two occasions in the Dáil since his recent election.”Johnston said; “Fingal County Council have commissioned a report entitled Coastal Processes at the Burrow, Portrane which is due to go on public display soon. While this report makes certain proposals for long-term coastal protection measures, it makes no recommendations for the area from

the surface water pipes at the rear of the Brook, to Quay Road. Enjoying the Summer after Lockdown!

By Siobhan O’Neill White Finally, restrictions have been eased and we can get out of the house after being cooped up for so long. Here are some suggestions for family friendly places to visit this summer. First off, Leisureplex. With all the rain lately, this is ideal indoor family fun. Their 6 locations have re-opened in accordance with Covid safety guidelines including hand sanitisers, social distance floorgraphics, “lane closed” bowling cones, safe-queuing floor graphics and safety shields at food diners. For days out, Irish National Stud Kildare is fantastic. Explore the beautiful gardens, follow the fairy trails, see the horses and lunch at the café. The children should sleep soundly after a day here! Dublinia is a fascinating place to learn about Vikings and medieval Dublin. Our teenagers loved this especially discovering the weapons. Interesting for all ages. All through lockdown, Droichead Arts Centre hosted virtual events to keep people connected. Now reopened, check their website to see what’s coming up https://www.droichead. com/ A summer camp we really like is Bricks4kidz Lego camps. They 14

Will video calls become the new normal for financial reviews? By Dave Kavanagh A survey by one of the life companies has revealed that 9 out of 10 people in Ireland were not aware that financial reviews can be done by video call. Many of those surveyed would be in favour of doing a review this way. Some of the reasons cited were: personal safety - no risk of COVID-19, convenience - no driving or parking to meet, easy to arrange, and time saving - no journey to and from a meeting. The feedback from those that have availed of this service was also very posi-tive.

Why video and not just phone call? It is often said that communication is about 20% what you say, 30% tone and 50% body language. It is far easier to understand what someone is explaining when you can see them. The reverse is also true, it is easier to gauge the pace of how you’re explaining something when you can see the reactions of those you’re talking to. Also, screen sharing gives the ability to display a variety of graphics, screens or documents from both sides. So what kind of things can you cover in a review? Most aspects of your current, future and

unex-pected income and expenditure. Your day to day budgeting, planning ahead for the short, medium and long term. The decision follows consultation of the Government’s roadmap for reopening society and business, and ongoing consultation with artists and partners. Niamh’s Summertime Frozen Yogurt Bark! A satisfying and scrumptiously refreshing summertime snack! Packed with protein and calcium.

The ingredients are fairly flexible so tailor to your tastes and use whatever flavour of yogurt/ fruit/toppings you like! Vanilla yogurt or adding some honey make it scrumptious!

Multi-coloured yogurt bark • 250g Greek or Greek style yogurt • 1x passion fruit • 20g cocao nibs • 10g goji berries

The most important ingredient to use is Greek or Greek style yogurt as this will prevent ice crystals forming. Here are a few other ideas as shown in the image

200g Greek or Greek style yogurt 100g blitzed blueberries (in a blender or simply mash with a fork)

Tip: The size of the lunchbox you use determines the thickness of the bark. I used a 12cm lunchbox for the yogurt bark in these images which made the yogurt bark 1cm thick. If the yogurt bark is too thick, it will be difficult to bite into it!

Method: 1. Line a lunchbox with cling film. 2. Mix the yogurt in a bowl with your choice of ingredients. Keep a few to sprinkle on top. 3. Pour the yogurt into the lunchbox. 3. Sprinkle the remainder of the ingredients on top of the yogurt. 4. Put the lid on the lunchbox and place in a freezer for 2-4hours or until completely frozen. You will need to allow a few minutes for it to slightly defrost and become soft before eating.
