Donabate Community Council criticises block sale of homes The sale of houses in blocks to private investment funds is depriving first-time buyers of a chance to own their own homes and must be curtailed, the annual general meeting of Donabate Portrane Community Council was told. The community council decried the emergence of so-called cuckoo funds that are buying up homes in large quantities.Cuckoos notoriously lay their eggs in other birds’ nests, where their hatchlings take over by pushing the original occupants over the edge.In the past month stockmarket quoted developer Glenvegh sold 40 homes in the Semple Woods scheme in Donabate in one transaction to the largest private rental company in the State, Ires Reit.These properties will be rented out, which has the effect of elbowing out potential first-time buyers anxious to own their

own homes.Glenvegh is building 305 three, four and five-bed terraced, semi-detached and detached homes at Semple Woods. The AGM of the community council was told that residents in the area were putting up with enormous traffic restrictions and hassle to accommodate the building of the Glenvegh houses. It was most disappointing that villagers had to bear so much disruption to their daily lives and then they see the properties sold off to a fund for rental, squeezing out local buyers. The views of the community council committee were endorsed at the AGM by Councillors Adrian Henchy (FF), Paul Mulville (Soc Dem) and Cathal Boland (Ind), and Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee (FF).Local election candidates

Corina Johnston (Lab) and Bob Dowling (FG) also agreed that large institutional funds buying up housing units en masse was detrimental to the area. The AGM elected a number of new members to Donabate Portrane Community Council. The community council is to prioritise lobbying for better infrastructure for the peninsula for the coming year, with an emphasis on having the narrow footpath widened outside the primary schools. A peninsula-wide traffic survey is needed, as is an environmental impact assessment for the entire area, the meeting was told.Better public transport infrastructure is also a necessity, people at the meeting heard.

Dowling outlines key priorities for donabate Local election candidate for Donabate and Portrane Bob Dowling (FG) has outlined his priorities for the area in the final weeks of his election campaign. Mr Dowling, a community activist for 22 years, said he was greatly encouraged by the positive reception he has received from residents when canvassing over the last number of months. “I am genuinely humbled by the positivity that I have received from local people in Donabate and Portrane while I have been campaigning. It is clear that people want change, and I can deliver that change”, he stated. Outlining his key concerns, Mr Dowling said that sustainable development has been a priority for him for many years. Dowling also spoke of his commitment to delivering a permanent solution to the issue of coastal erosion at Portrane beach, which is an issue that he has been working on for many years. “The current temporary solution at Portrane beach is welcome, however it is just that; temporary. My immediate priority for Portrane is a permanent solution to combat coastal erosion. Education

provision is a key priority is a growing area and Dowling’s experience in the campaign for the Donabate Community College coupled with his professional qualifications in school planning is crucial going forward in educational provision. Policing and Garda resources are another issue of concern for Dowling, and he said he would be continuing to work for better Garda resources for Donabate and Portrane. “In the short term I want to see a regular Garda presence in order to deter antisocial behaviour, and I am working to ultimately deliver a Garda station for the Donabate and Portrane area”. Finally, Mr Dowling noted many other issues, but reassured voters that he was a committed, experienced and devoted individual with a track record of delivering for the community. “ I respectfully ask that people give me their number one vote on May 24th, in order to elect an experienced and honest individual who will fight for the people of this area to Fingal County Council”, he concluded.

Newly formed Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane have had a number of Slow Sessions every 2nd Sunday of the month in Cafe Naturale thanks to Wayne Hand for the free use of this great little facility. Recently, this session was lead by renowned Traditional Irish Piper Eamonn Galldubh, not alone is he a gifted musician but he had all the children playing & having fun as he brought an array of instruments with him to try out. The Fast Sessions are in Keelings every 3rd Wednesday of the month for more experienced players. Next session is on Wednesday 15th May at 9pm one is welcome to listen or play! Active Age for All leads the Way!

The latest sports craze in Ireland is Pickleball and we in AAfA have embraced the game with great enthusiasm.Recently we hosted the largest group of Pickleballers to ever come together in the Republic of Ireland . The Pickleballers from Multyfarnham in Co. Westmeath visited the peninsula and after a short tour we had a wondeful lunch in Keelings and then went on to the Community Centre.Two hours of friendly Pickleball matches later and all were ready for light refreshments in Café Natural and an opportunity to socialise. Our Coach Debbie Brown, later said she was impressed with the standard of Pickleball played that day. The visitors were also very impressed with all the facilities of Donabate Portrane Community Centre and thé fantastic Sportshall in which 10

we train for Bowls & Pickleball on Tuesday & Thursday afternoons courtesy of the Community College. A return visit to Multyfarnham has been arranged and we look forward to that. Croquet in Newbridge House Members of AAfA have started back playing croquet on the pristine lawn in Newbridge House recently.The lawn was refurbished to international standards in 2016-17 by Fingal County Council. Croquet takes place every Wednesday from 2.00pm – 4.00pm and all are welcome.This activity is free to AAfA members and is open to our members all through the summer months. The recent arrival of Spring has encouraged the players out to play and local photographer Joe Pryme was on hand to photograph them in action. Our thanks to Joe for capturing the event

Westmantown’s Bowling Club was welcomed to the peninsula over light refreshments in Café Natural recently.Atter that the serious business of bowling began!The mats were laid, the bowls were taken out and the two teams lined up! A great afternoon of bowls and fun was then had by all. AAfA bowlers picked up a number of tips from the more experienced teams from Westmanstown and great friendships were made. Infrastructural deficiencies must be addressed - Johnston Labour Candidate for Donabate and Portrane, Corina Johnston, has called on a number of Ministers to prioritise key infrastructural deficiencies affecting the Donabate peninsula. Johnston has called on Ministers for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Justice and Transport to state what measures are being put in place to address these deficiencies. Ms. Johnston said;“The Donabate Distributor Road is due to open later this year. The road is being constructed as a single lane despite planning permission granted for a dual carriageway. An alternative direct slip road from Donabate onto the M1 is needed to ensure the steady flow of traffic off the peninsula.The Hearse road needs to be upgraded. While this is an objective of the Fingal Development Plan, regrettably to date this has not been deemed a priority. I am calling on the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government to prioritise this before traffic chaos ensues” She said, “The population is increasing all along the northern commuter line. Trains are full at peak times and the one direct bus to the city centre is full. People are fainting on the trains on a

regular basis and many are now walking to Portrane to get on the direct bus.The Minister for Transport needs to urgently ringfence the funding for the upgrading of the northern commuter line to allow the process of purchasing new trains and the upgrading of the line to commence. In the interim additional direct buses to the city must be prioritised at peak times to alleviate the congestion on the trains.” Ms. Johnston added;” I am also calling on the Minister for Justice to address the lack of permanent Gardai on the isolated peninsula. With the population set to double over the next 10 years we need a commitment on permanent Garda resources. Many residents feel intimidated and are fearful for the future. We need to see visibility on the beat before the summer season approaches.I have raised these issues with the relevant Ministers and have urged them to outline what steps are being taken to the address these deficiencies. Government policy dictates the building of sustainable communities which should envisage the provision of the necessary infrastructure in tandem with development. Regrettably this has not taken place in Donabate to date.”

Saturday 6th April 2019 is a date not to be forgotten in this Centenary Year of Portrane Hockey Club. Our Ladies First X1 and Men’s 2ND X1 won their respective Cup Finals in thrilling fashion overcoming Mullingar and Railway Union 4ths respectively much to the delight of a big Purple Army following at the fine Three Rock Rovers venue on Grange Road Rathfarnham. First up was the Junior Men’s Final. In a cracking game played at a real high pace Portrane came out on top in a 3-2 Classic with the winning goal coming from a great strike by club stalwart Stephen Neville. Other goalscorers were 12

Ossian Elmiger and Riley Shoebridge.When the very proud captain and goalkeeper Conor Meyler lifted the Junior Cup he put all the Southside hockey clubs on notice that Portrane HC are back and this was not going to be the only silverware coming across the Liffey to the Northside this year. Conor Meyler’s forecast was soon proved right when at 4pm the fantastic Portrane ladies took on a very strong Mullingar who only the previous week had won the league. This very close game was ultimately decided by a clinical finish in the first half by the prolific Hannah Moynihan and despite serious pressure from Mullingar for long

periods of the second half the Portrane defence held strong. Then as a reward with six minutes remaining an absolutely cracking strike from Sarah Dowling brought ecstasy and cheers that could be heard all the way back to the peninsula. Portrane hockey club celebrates its Centenary year in 2019 and that day the Portrane ladies became he first ever Portrane hockey ladies to win a Leinster Cup Final. The Centenary ball at the end of May is going to have two special guests at the top table the Men’s Leinster Junior Cup and for the first time ever, a Leinster Junior Ladies Cup.
