Active Age still looking for more participants

Active Age for All is up and running for our February to May session. Most classes and activities are well-subscribed but there are some vacancies left in Bowls, Bridge, Beginners French, Cards, Singing & Music and Pickleball. Sit & Get Fit is now running on 2 days, Tuesday and Friday from 11.00 am - 12.00 noon.It continues to be a ‘pay as you go’ class on both days and costs €5 per session. We have responded to this growing, popular class with the

introduction of the second session. Get ready for Croquet which will be starting up soon on the beautiful new lawn in Newbridge. If you are 55+ and want to avail of classes and activities, you are welcome to join for a €10 membership fee. Your membership card also entitles you to discount offers available from some local businesses. You can view these on the Active Age website at www.activeageforall.com. If you have missed the registration days or are interested

New Comhaltas group set up in Donabate A meeting took place on Wednesday 6thFebruary at the Educate Together Donabate Portrane to bring people together to form a branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann on the peninsula. Nearly 50 people attended and there was great enthusiasm. In attendance were Mary Whelan, Chairperson of the Dublin County Board of CCÉ, who spoke about the formation of a branch of Comhltas and about the ethos of the organisation. Elizabeth Byrne, founder member of CCÉ Port Mearnóg, spoke about setting up a branch within the last 5 years and her experience as an adult learner of a musical

instrument. We hope to begin with some slow sessions on a Sunday morningbetween 11 and 1 in Café Natural with kind permission of Wayne Hand within the next two months. On Saturday the 16th of March local trad musicians will come together to play in Cates Café as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge. We invite any trad musicians in the area to join us for this at 2pm.There will be some people from Comhaltas to talk to on the day. We hope classes to start in this September 2019 for adults and children age 7 and over. Watch this space!

Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed - new members welcome

Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed aims to provide a safe environment for men (18 years and older) to socialise and connect with others while participating in group and / or individual projects. For several months now, Donabate Sea Scouts has kindly allowed us to use their den on the Portrane Road for our get-togethers. On Wednesdays from 10am to noon, in addition to tea, coffee and chat, we have a jamming session; so bring along your instruments and music. On Thursdays from 9:30am to noon, we have a general get-together (tea or coffee and a chat). Feel free to drop in 10

either or both days. In addition, we have outings of interest to members; examples in the past have been pitch and putt and a visit to Glasnevin Cemetery Museum. We are currently organising a trip to Collins’ Barracks.We are open to other suggestions from members for other activities, events and trips.Recently, Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed took delivery of a second-hand portacabin purchased with generous sponsorship from Fingal County Council and Tesco (Ireland)

Joint Supplements – Does my dog need one?

The answer to this may seem quite simple, especially if you have an elderly dog with arthritis, then yes a joint supplement will absolutely be of benefit to your dog. But what about the rest of us with healthy fit animals? A number of factors can come into play when trying to answer this question, health & size of the dog being two that come to mind straight away! Most people will come to the conclusion that their dog is healthy and therefore feeding a joint supplement is probably not necessary until the dog gets older or indeed starts showing signs (slowing down, stiffer movement especially in the morning, or trying to get up after a nap/rest) that they might well need one, but there are many situations where feeding a joint supplement can be considered a wise

investment, as the good old saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’. Larger dogs as well as working dogs who are more active and put their joints under more pressure & strain would be a prime example where feeding a joint supplement earlier on may be of great benefit to them later on in life. The two main types of joint problems we see in dogs are developmental and degenerative. Developmental joint problems would include hip or elbow dysplasia (a deformity of the hip/elbow joint that occurs during the growth period). Whereas a degenerative joint problem is usually seen as osteoarthritis. A joint Supplement in most cases will certainly help your dog if they suffer from either of these ailments but will also slow down the onset of these if you start

them before your dog shows any signs or symptoms. Joint supplements are very gentle on your dog’s system and not like medication, with most you cannot over dose your dog on as your dog will only absorb what’s needed. There are many different types of joint supplements available, albeit some better than others but the majority of these supplements share two common ingredients, Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Glucosamine aids in the production and rebuilding of cartilage, allowing for smoother joint movement. Chondroitin which is often used in human healthcare for its anti-inflammatory effects, will also help to maintain cartilage and keep ligaments and muscles strong in your furry little friends. If you think your dog might

benefit from a joint supplement, I would put any doubts you may have about doing so away and go ahead, it will always play out better in the long run!! If you want any more information or advice please don’t be afraid to ask one of our resident experts when you’re in next.

Scrumptious protein pancakes just for you Protein has become a bit of a buzz word and although most of us in Ireland DO eat enough protein for what our bodies need, a lot of us tend to eat the majority of our protein in our evening meal. Research has shownthat it is more beneficial to try and eat food sources of protein throughout the day rather than a load all at once! Having protein in this way and especially following exercise that uses our muscles will help to keep our muscle and our bodies lean. And the great news is that applies to everyone, no matter your age. Here is a recipe for ‘protein pancakes’ which uses basic food ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

Ingredients

Makes 5 x 100g FULFILLING Pancakes!!! 14

3 eggs 200g oats 300ml high protein milk 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Method 1. Blitz the oats in a blender/nutri bullet until they turn into a flour like mix. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly. 3. Heat a non stick pan. 4. When the pan is hot pour some of the mixture on and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes. (Covering the pancakes will help them cook faster). 5. When the edges start to lightly brown and look dry and bubbles start appearing

on the pancake surface,flip the pancake over and cook the other side. Top them off as you like and GOBBLE EM UP!!!! (I love mine with peanut butter, sliced banana and dark chocolate drizzled on top as a scrumptious and VERY satisfying treat!) DCC were crowned North East Leinster U19 champions in a final played against Drogheda Grammar played in Oriel Park. After a highly entertaining contest, DCC won 4-2 on penalties. DCC got off to a great start attacking their opposition from the kickoff. DCC had an early corner which almost resulted in a goal. Drogheda followed up these attacks with quick counters with Cormac Burke needing to make a number of key interceptions. Jeff Nwodo sat back to help the defence and showed great strength to stop attacks and win back the ball back. DCC scored the first goal of the game after a super Callum Leonard through ball found striker Jason Dignam who played it back to him leaving Leonard to tap it in. Drogheda fought back straight away with a number of attacks, one of 16

which resulted in keeper, Jack Kinsella, having to make a good save. Fullback, Denis Galusca, made great runs along the left wing to initiate DCC attacks. Droghedaâ€™s fast counter attacks eventually became too much for the DCC defence as a good ball split the DCC defence and it fell to a Drogheda player to put the ball in the DCC net. Soon after, Drogheda had another attack resulting in a Drogheda player being brought down inside the DCC box. This penalty was converted giving Drogheda the lead. 2-1 to Drogheda. This gave DCC fresh impetus as they increased their pressure on the Drogheda defence. DCC got the equaliser they deserved after Sam Carroll played a through ball to Mark McMahon who finished it to the left side of goal out of the keeperâ€™s reach. DCC upped the pressure instantly in the second half. Dignam pressed up high on offence and backed up by the midfielders such Alan Kelly they didn’t let the Drogheda players have time to think on the ball. Adam Greene replaced Denis Galusca. Lyons and Greene both instantly made an impact coming in, in both attack and defence. A corner to DCC almost led to a goal after a good cross went just over Burke’s head. Burke, was replaced by Bobby Kelly shortly afterwards because of injury and Jeffrey Iyobosa entered the playing field for Sam Carroll but there was no separating the teams at the end of normal time, as it finished two all. The game had to go to extra-time. Lyons,. Nwodo and Kelly all played well during this time but the game finished level and went to penalities. Bobby

Kelly stepped up first and fired it into the top left corner. Drogheda’s first penalty was also scored. Mark McMahon was the second DCC to take one and he put it bottom right out of the keepers reach. Drogheda’s proceeding penalty was scored. Jason Dignam was the next DCC player to step up and he didn’t give the keeper a chance, placing it right into the bottom left corner. Drogheda’s third penalty was put over the bar. Adam Greene took DCCs fourth penalty and he fired it into the bottom left corner. Drogheda’s next penalty had to be scored or else DCC would be the winners. The shot went to the right side of the goal and keeper Jack Kinsella made the game winning save to make DCC the North East Leinster U19s champions.DCC will now face into the Leinster Quarter Finals after the mid term break.
