Donabate Portrane ICA activities for all The Donabate Portrane guild continues to meet in the Community Centre Meeting room at 8.00. We have had a busy session since September and with speakers and events. We have had a skin-care talk, a demonstration on making stitched cards, Christmas decoration demonstration, visited the Knitting & Stitching Fair and we have had stalls at the Bleeding Pig craft fair and at the Christmas Fair in the Parish Hall. Thanks so much to all who supported our fundraising for Brother Kevin. We look forward to our new session that starts on 10th January. The meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays each month. Fingal Libraries secures €711k funding to invest in ICT

Fingal Libraries has secured a major funding boost of €711,000 to upgrade and improve ICT and digital services throughout its network, which is a key strategic aim of its ambitious Development Plan to be rolled over the next five years. Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD, has approved an almost €8 million investment for libraries nationwide, with approximately €6 million funded by the Department and a further €2 million contribution from Local Authorities. Fingal Libraries will receive €476,000 from the Department, which was the second highest grant awarded to a local authority by the Department. The remaining €235,000 will come from Fingal County Council itself. Announcing the investment package, Minister Ring said: “This investment will enhance ICT infrastructure, create new meeting spaces with state-of-the-art technology and provide dedicated digital learning suites. The new facilities and services will attract new users of all ages to our public libraries. I have to commend the local authorities for recognising the invaluable service the libraries provide and for committing €2 million to this investment package.”

The funding includes the provision of: • iPads/tablets/smart devices for users and for staff to assist users • Computers and workstations • Meeting space technology • Podcasting equipment and workstations • Mobile LCD screens with audio • Interactive whiteboards • Digital training suites • Maker space equipment County Librarian Betty Boardman, said: “This funding has come at a very good time for Fingal Libraries as it will assist us in achieving two of the main objectives in our Development Plan published earlier this year – to continue to provide high quality, welcoming, accessible spaces which meet the needs of library users and to reinforce the position of libraries in the community as key points of access to information technology and digital services.” The Plan identifies seven key objectives: Workforce, Capital and Infrastructure, Collections and Resources, Programming of events and Activities, Technology, Marketing and Communications and Collaboration and Partnerships. Over a million visits were made to public libraries in Fingal during 2017.

Cllr Henchy pays tribute to retiring Postmaster I was absolutely delighted to join the large gathering that came together in Keelings, Donabate to pay tribute and thanks to a legendary man of Donabate and human institution Mr. Neil Smith who, after 33 years of public service, retired as Donabate Postmaster. It was absolutely wonderful to see so many of the long established families and individuals from Donabate and Portrane come out to celebrate Neil’s life and incredible service to the communities of Donabate Portrane which not only dates back to his 33 years as our Postmaster but also in running “The Emerald Shop” which for so long was the heartbeat of Donabate Village. Local Councillor Adrian Henchy said, “I would like to take this opportunity to pay my own tribute to Neil on this very special occasion and thank him for his wonderful lifetime service and commitment to Donabate. As someone who was born and reared in Portrane now living in Donabate, Neil was someone who was always a constant presence in my life as a close friend of my father and my late mother. As a child, Neil’s love of Soccer meant he was one of the organisers of the original Mini Euros on Portrane Green. Neil also played and was heavily involved in a famous and successful local Soccer team of the 1970s/1980s Sandville United who played at the New Road, Donabate. Neil also played a bit of Gaelic for St. Pats and was a long standing member of Donabate Golf Club. Neil was also among a small group of wonderful community volunteers who came together in the late 1980s, to deliver the top class Community Centre we enjoy today on the Portrane Road. Over all this time Neil was a highly respected and hugely popular man in our community The time has now come for him to enjoy his retirement,with Joan and to fully enjoy life with his children and their families, they all clearly love being with him.”

DonabateCommunity College News Donabate CC Students met a NASA Astronaut

By Ronan Doyle, 2nd Year On Monday the 12th of November, students from Ms Peat’s 2nd Year science class and a number of Senior students were invited to attend a talk by NASA Astronaut, Shane Kimbrough in DCU with Ms. Peat. DCU President, Professor Brian MacCraith introduced and welcomed Shane Kimbrough and they shared a photo taken from the International Space Station of Dublin a number of years ago. Dublin looked tiny compared to everything else! Mr. Kimbrough told us his story on how he became an astronaut. He graduated college as an engineer and he is also a retired Army Colonel. In 2004, he had been chosen for the prestigious NASA astronaut program. He told us about his first time going up to space and the excitement and joy that went through him as he had always dreamed of becoming an astronaut. Mr. Kimbrough spoke about his adventures in space and told us about NASA’s future plans for space exploration while photos and videos that were taken on his adventures to the ISS were shown in the background. Secondly, he described what he and other astronauts did in the International Space Station during his time spent there. He mentioned the interesting work they carried out. For example, growing lettuce 12

in a controlled environment and other fascinating experiments they completed as well as Spacewalks. He also told us about the fun they had while up there. On one occasion, at the time of the 51st Super Bowl the entire crew was each sent a team’s jersey and asked to record themselves doing American football related activities such as passing the ball to each other in zero gravity (he shared a video of this). He then said that one of his favourite things to do up in space was to sit in a small room surrounded by windows and watch as the Earth, 408 km below, rotated. He spoke about the importance of exercise & diet for the team whilst they are on the ISS. In total, he has spent 189 days in Space. He became the International Space Stations 50th Commander in 2016. Finally, he spoke about NASA’s plans to go back to the moon and told us, the students, that any one of us could be one of the lucky astronauts in to travel to Mars in 15-20 years. He then answered questions from the audience which was a great way to end the talk. Altogether it was a fascinating talk for us to experience. It was incredible to be in the presence of a NASA Astronaut who is only 1 of the 533 people to have ever been in the earth’s orbit. It was great to learn all about an astronaut’s job from an actual astronaut who has lived on the ISS, 408 km above us.

DCC student Aisling Keogh stars in ‘Steel Magnolias’

By TY Journalism students Maria Doyle and Alanna France Fifth Year student, Aisling Keogh recently performed in Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society’s production of “Steel Magnolias”. The plot of the story is about bride-to-be Shelby Eatenton and her friends Truvy Jones and Annelle Dupuy Desoto. Shelby has a health scare which doesn’t bode well for her hopes of having children. The story follows these women who encounter good and bad fortune and who grow closer together. We asked Aisling what she had to do to prepare for the production. She said she had to find 80s style clothing and wear a fake pregnancy belly. She also had to pretend to become a “born again” Christian to really get into character. Before shows, the cast would chill out and re-run scenes and go over lines. Aisling described this as a really relaxing time for the cast. Aisling said that she really enjoyed playing the character of Annelle and she said she enjoyed being the centre of the jokes in the play. During this show, Aisling had four quick changes, one costume change for every scene. These were very quick changes as the whole cast was changing backstage. This was a challenge but Aisling enjoyed every minute. Her friends and family came to the show to support her. While she was grateful for the support, she found this a little distracting because her friends found it funny that she was wearing a pregnancy belly. Aisling described a funny moment that happened on stage. In one scene a cup of juice had to be knocked off the table and Aisling’s character had to clean up the juice. But the tables were too far away so she couldn’t reach the spill. So the play had to carry on with a juice spill on the floor. Such are the perils of live theatre! Her advice for aspiring actors is to go for it! She said not to be disappointed if you don’t get a part in a show and her best piece of advice given to her was “there are no small roles, only small actors”. Aisling said she really enjoyed the show and thanked everyone for their support. We are extremely proud of Aisling’s accomplishments and wish her well for the future!

DonabateCommunity College News TY Drivers’ Education driving lessons by TY Journalism students Eoin Brehony and Ciara Kavanagh7 Recently our TY students went to Maynooth in Kildare where they participated in driving lessons. They arrived in Maynooth and were split into two groups, one group got to drive the cars first, the other group went to practice the theory test. Before starting, the students were asked to separate themselves into groups of three, and they were then assigned a car and an instructor. The three students each took turns to drive the car. While driving, the instructor ensured that the students were comfortable with driving by telling them what to do and by asking them various questions about driving. After each student had their turn, the instructor gave some feedback by giving the students marks based on their driving. After every student had tried driving the car, the groups then swapped over. While one group was driving, the other group practised their driving theory. One of the instructors stayed with them while they completed the theory test. The students stayed in the groups they were in while they were in the car, and as teams, they answered the forty questions. The questions were examples of the real theory test and the students had to get thirty-five or above to pass. Very few teams passed on the first try, but as the game was repeated, the scores began to increase and after three turns, most teams had passed. The instructors gave out free driving lessons to the students that had the best score after driving. Well done to Ciaran Lyons and Alanna France, the lucky victors! The students learned about the different road signs and what they mean from the theory test as well as other useful information like how far to stay back from another car, how rain affects the car and driving etc. They also learned the basics of driving, including how to use the pedals, what each pedal does, how to change gears and much more from this experience. Overall the experience was very enjoyable and educational for all of the Transition Year students, as every student learned a great deal from the whole experience.The students all had a great time at Drivers Education and would definitely recommend it to future TY students!

DCC Student Council attends Zeminar in RDS By Jenny Thompson, TY Journalism On Wednesday the 14th of November, nine members of the student council, accompanied by four 5th year students, attended Zeminar in the RDS. In their own words, “Zeminar is a social enterprise created to bring all those invested in the development and well-being of young people in Ireland to one place.” Zeminar is targeted at 15 to 20 year olds, with a view to living a happier, safer and more fulfilled life. Running for three days, DCC students attended on Wednesday and were privileged to be able to hear talks from many wonderful, varied and inspirational speakers. Dublin footballer, Paul Mannion spoke about the value of language and human connection in a technology-dominated society. Lauren Guilfoyle spoke about the impact of sport and positive thinking on wellbeing. Rory O’Connor, perhaps better known as

Winter Concert in DCC

Donabate Community College is hosting its annual Winter Concert on Tuesday the 11th of December from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets are €5, with all funds raised going towards the Headstrong Committee in the school. Experience the magic of the winter wonderland while helping a worthwhile cause!

Rory’s Stories, spoke about his own experience with loss and addiction whilst also speaking about the joy that having the ability to express his previously untapped creativity has brought him. Jack Kavanagh shared his own experience with paralysis, and facing life’s challenges with the fearlessness of a child. Students were able to roam around the RDS’ main hall exploring the multitude of charities, businesses, clubs and organisations which had set up stalls there. From a student’s perspective, Zeminar was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and learn from the experience of others. We were given great insight into overcoming difficulty while striving for success in an age where everything is dominated by social media and the constant need for validation. All in all, Zeminar was a wonderful experience for everyone there and we would recommend it to anyone. The event has given our Council a lot to think about and lots of ideas to bring back to our school. We would also like to say a big thank you to Ms. Clery and Ms. Orohoe for organising and accompanying us on the trip.

Active age for all- welcome all over 55’s

We in Active Age feel so lucky to live on the Peninsula where we have such good facilities, in the Community Centre, and so many activities and classes to participate in! We welcome all over 55’s to join us and get out and get active and meet people.

Indoor Bowls: Is one of our activities that is sociable, and that the not so fit can participate in. It is easy to learn under the expert tuition of Elizabeth Craven! It is for men and women and takes place on Tuesday afternoon at 3.00pm in the Community Centre. We have state of the art equipment! So please just turn up, in non-marking runners and loose clothing. It is a Free Activity for members!

Singing and Music: Is a most enjoyable experience with expert guidance given by Muireann Conway. She has so enthused the group that we are having a Carol concert with the children from the DPCC Creche at 12.00pm on the 6th of December in DPCC all proceeds for Cambodia – CAROLS for CAMBODIA- We would ask all members to support us on the day. There will be mulled wine(non-alcoholic) and mince pies after the concert.

Our Cycling Group - Peninsula Pedallers – under the expert guidance of Mark Philbin, meets every Sunday morning at 10.00am at the Donabate/ Portrane Community Centre. They are a very enthusiastic group who enjoy their 10k cycle with a coffee shop stop, and for the more hard-core cyclist there is a longer route. Walking / Hiking: We direct any of our members to hikingireland. ie website, run by Margaret and Damien Goodwin, for any hillwalking or mountaineering activities. For those interested in local walks we can try and connect you together then hive you off and maybe a new WhatsApp group will emerge! Peninsula Passeggiata (stroll or ramble in Italian) Might appeal to our international residents

Bridge: A most stimulating class with great instruction from our teacher Anne Doyle. We are progressing, but we can still take some new members if you want a very challenging and inspiring Tuesday afternoon. Tai Chi and Yoga are a wonderful ways to increase flexibility – we have waiting list for these classes, if you wish to add your name to the lists, for the next term starting in February, please contact us. Croquet: Has been suspended for now as the management of Newbridge House need to protect the Croquet Lawn from damage. They will inform us when the Lawn is fit to play on again.

After our ladies had their hair styled we went to Inglot in The Pavilions where i had booked my two ladies with the lovely Inglot make up artists. Sophie O’Kelly had been assigned to Yvonne and Roisin Agnew worked on Denisa. The MUA’s did a superb job with stunning results. The products in Inglot are very well known for extremely good coverage. Their foundation make up was flawless plus their eye shadows have excellent pigment resulting in strong fabulous eyes. Their blushers and conturing products are fantastic quality plus they have stunning highlighters. They have a Christmas gift guide , sets starting at €32 right up to €130 for the quality Brush Collection. These are super presents for any age. The staff are so helpful and friendly and you can see this is their passion. So we have two beautiful ladies hair done make up done. Where’s next I hear you ask? At this stage I felt the right place to take my ladies shopping was CoCo Belle Boutique in Donabate. Owner Amanda Ni Tuathaill, of this gem of a Boutique, has the most amazing style. Yes she’s got the balance right. I bought a top when we were doing the shoot plus one of my ladies bought two jumpsuits. We all went home with shopping bags bulging. We were so excited to visit Professor Bryan Hennessy at Beaumont Hospital to hand over the cheque for €4,900 fund raised from our fabulous show. Bryan introduced us to his two leading ladies who work along side him Angela Farrelly PHD and Sinead Toomey PHD are Clinical Cancer Researchers. They both assured me that this money will go to very good use. We were in the new Smurfit Building it was actually amazing to see. The most educated people there learning and teaching all about Cancer. However Bryan nowtells me they are progressing much much quicker with successful treatments than in years past regarding Cancer and all its various connected.strains and illnesses He is one amazing person, very young to actually be a professor and such a normal kind respectful gent it was an honor to meet him. I met him at the show as he did a few minutes speech. On the night his wife also attended and she walked the catwalk and she was fantastic. They stayed for the entire show which I was so delighted to see. This was a special night to remember. As for my super models I could not have done this without your very generous time not only for the show but for the fundraiser shoot I did in Ardgillan Castle. You guys and girls are so amazing and I thank each and every single one of you. I would never take you for granted your simply fantastic and I thank you all. Thanks too to the make up artists and hair stylists for giving both your time and your products. Seriously you are so so kind and I did explain to the Cancer team how lucky I was to have you all donate your time and products free. When you all could have earned a wage that fashion show day. We all did this in our own little way to help the fight against Cancer. Designers you and your models looked fantastic. Amazingly for some it was your first time, so big stage shock, but you all did it and did it so well, take a bow. To the shops, you and your models were fantastic and professional and what a balance of interesting collections. Thank you for being part of my show. Anna Waters here in the photo also helped so much with producing and stage management on the day with Gordon Flynn from London as stage manager. Also I must also say a huge huge thank you to one of my favorite gents in the public eye Mr Noel Cunningham who hosted the show for the second time. He has devoted his time to helping many many charities and in my eyes he’s right up there at the top. Thank you Noel. Ok that’s it folks. Nuttily Nutritious Christmas Pudding!! “This is a tasty twist on the traditional Christmas pudding. It is packed full of ‘nuttylicious’ nutrition and because it is quite rich and decadent, you will find yourself feeling satisfied after 1 slice! Don’t forget to be active over the festive season too, whether it’s dancing, walking, running or ice-skating that floats your boat, be sure to fit in the fitness as much as the food!

Nuttily nutritious Christmas pudding!! Ingredients:

Makes 8x100g servings

• 200g Almonds • 100g Pecan nuts • 100g Dates • 100g Sultanas • 80g Dried figs • 150g almond butter (or just use

whatever nut butter you have, better if it is smooth) • 30g honey • 50g cocoa powder • Juice of 1 large orange • 100g dark chocolate Tip: for some added festive flavour add 1 teaspoon of each of the following spices to the dried fruit mixture to soak in overnight with the orange juice: cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.

Method 1.Soak the dried fruit (dates, sultanas and figs) overnight in the juice from the squeezed orange. 2. Blitz the nuts using a powerful blender/bullet until all nuts are in a fine mixture. 3.Blitz the dried fruit in a food processor/blender and add into a

mixing bowl with the nut mix. 4.Add the almond butter, cocoa powder and honey into the dried fruit/ nut mixture in the bowl and mix to combine all of the ingredients together. 5.Place the mixture into a dome shaped container/mould and leave in the fridge for 3 hours. 6.Before serving, melt the dark chocolate. Turn the mould upside down on your serving plate and gently tap the top and sides in order to ease the pudding out. Then pour the melted chocolate all over the top and sides. Donabate Parkrunners-ever increasing numbers

It was another busy month at Donabate parkrun with participant numbers averaging over 150 in addition to over 20 volunteers at each event. The biggest attendance was 174 on October 27th when Lusk AC were out in force to support their latest Fit4Life graduates. Milestones were reached for 100 runs by Maureen Sullivan & Patrick Phillips, 50 runs by Jennifer Carpenter and 25 volunteer occasions by Sean White & Fionnuala Healy. Congratulations to all. We are always on the look out volunteers to help at parkrun and we were delighted in recent weeks that a number of students have chosen to volunteer at parkrun for Gaisce, the President’s Award. Katie Reid and Sorcha Healy (pictured) have both been brilliant and welcome additions to our roster. If you would like to volunteer at parkrun please get in touch at donabatehelpers@ parkrun.com. All the roles are straight forward and we give training on the morning of each event. If you haven’t tried parkrun yet, why not give it a go. We welcome runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities. You just register once at www.parkrun.ie and print off your barcode. Portrane’s Moynihan secures his place in the promised land That’s right – Mount Juliet’s Gavin Moynihan has earned his shot at redemption after grinding his way to Main Tour status right on the number at Final Stage European Tour Qualifying School in Spain.It was never going to be easy but 14 holes through his sixth and final round he was coasting with two birdies on the card before nerves inevitably took hold. Bogeys on 15 and 17 made for an anxious finale, but needing a par to win, the Dubliner duly obliged by knocking in a testing four-footer to ensure his Main Tour return. Moynihan finished qualifying on 16-under-par for the week, good enough for a share of 20th spot, with the top-25 and ties earning promotion to the Promised Land. No surprise then that relief was the overriding emotion for Gavin having come through ‘Hell Week’ unscathed. “I just had a four-footer there and it was the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life,” admitted Moynihan of the putt that secured his golden ticket to a tour that proved fruitless in his rookie season this year. There had been a noticeable upturn in Moynihan’s form coming into the Final Stage examination at Lumine Golf Club. “The last three months have been very good,” Moynihan reflected. “The first three or four months of this year I was just missing cuts by one and two and it got to me. But Valderrama

was a big turning point, a top-10 there and it was nice to keep that going here.It’s one of the most demanding golf courses I’ve ever played [Valderrama]. I finished three-under and I was top-10. There’s not many courses in the world that produce that. It was a decent field as well.But I’ve
