August has a tendency to fly by, particularly where children are concerned. School bells will soon be ringing so it is time to shift into high gear to get kids ready. It’s time to consider turning off the television and limiting computer time - soon enough it will be time for homework so it makes sense to put some order on the evenings. Ditto for bedtime! Kids are often too busy playing to recognize that they are tired. Putting them to bed earlier may not make you the most popular parent, but their growing bodies will thank you, especially with the earlier wake up time! Wake your kids up at what will be their regular morning wake-up time for school. And put away the sugary cereals and make a healthy breakfast part of your daily habit. Buying school supplies like backpacks, binders, and pencil cases holds a certain magic for getting kids excited about hearing the school bell ring again. Start eating lunch at the same time as the school does. You can easily help your child’s stomach get on a schedule so that little bellies don’t grumble while they are in a classroom. You want them focused on learning, not on their hunger.

Going where no-one has gone before!

There are very few places left on this planet where no-one has ever set foot. The Northern Pole of Inaccessibility is one of these places and Dublin man John Lynders is aiming to travel to the region next year. The Northern Pole of Inaccessibility is 200

miles further north then the North Pole, and it has never been reached by explorers. John, and 27 other volunteers, will undertake the 800 mile journey next year where they hope to collect vital data which will be very important to those studying global warming.

Along the route team members will be gathering “crucial datasets” for the scientific community including new and vital data about how the sea ice breaks up, making the whole endeavour a major, globally significant, citizen science project. Partners include NASA, the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) scientists, The Met Office, The Scott Polar Institute, The Norwegian Polar Institute and the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute and others. This vital data will deliver the reality of climate change and make the whole expedition worthwhile and purposeful. John has been selected for the Ice Warrior Lastpole Expedition and will be undergoing a comprehensive and intensive training programme to take on at least one of four 20-day legs, pushing the route across the Arctic Ocean by approximately 200 miles. “I will be man-hauling a 60kg sled with all food supplies, fuel and equipment all the while keeping away from polar bears,” he says. The exploration is being led by explorer Jim McNeill, who has tried but failed, to reach the location before by himself. John needs to raise €25,000 and has set up a fundraising page at www.johnlynders.com where people can donate to help get this mental health nurse where no man has ever gone before.

New law protects life-saving gear

Local Councillor Darragh Butler has welcomed new legislation that will bring in tough penalties for anyone who steals or damage life-saving equipment such as defibrillators and lifebuoys. The Life Saving Equipment Bill 2017 imposes strict new penalties, including a fine of up to €50,000 and a jail term of up to 5 years for anyone convicted of interfering with life-saving equipment. Senator Dr. Keith Swanick, sponsor of the bill, noted that “research from the Irish Heart Foundation reveals that around 13 people die every day from cardiac arrest. Defibrillators are vital in improving survival rates and we must ensure that these devices are protected against vandals. “Similarly, a number of County Councils have reported problems with life rings and lifebuoys going missing at lakes, rivers and beaches. Lives are being unnecessarily lost as a result of people stealing or interfering with these essential pieces of life-saving equipment.” Cllr. Butler added that “we need to do all that we can to ensure that life saving equipment such as defibrillators and lifebuoys are respected and protected and that those to steal, damage or vandalise such equipment get severely punished with very strict penalties. Zero-tolerance is the correct approach to vandalism theft, especially in this regard and I really hope to see this legislation progress and be implemented.

A WWI story of loss and discovery By Ian Chambers, Dublin Branch, Western Front Association

erry Dockrell was born on 9 September, 1887, at the Burrow, Portrane, the eighth child (of 13, not all of whom survived infancy) of William and Bridget Dockrell.

His Mother, Bridget, died, aged only forty two, on 21 February, 1896, and the 1901 Census shows that William and seven of his children were living together at number 18 the Burrow, while Terry was living at number 16 with his Aunt, Lane Smart. The Census also tells us that at this point Terry was still at school. After leaving school he worked for the Gas Company and was prominent in local sport, playing both Association Football and Gaelic, the latter of which he played for the Donabate team known as the Stars of Fingall. It is believed that he joined the army along with others from Donabate and Portrane in a pub in Malahide after they had been to a football match, and became Private 4620 the Royal Irish Rifles (RIR). Following training, Terry was posted to the Balkans, his Medal Index Card, (MID), stating that he arrived in this theatre on 22 September 1915, It would seem likely that Terry joined the battalion at Mudros and then proceeded to Salonika and took part in the battle at Kosturino in December, 1915. The next thing we know about Terry is that he then ‘deserted’ from the army, this is shown quite clearly on his on his MID, where it says

‘Deserted 1.6.16’. This however, is only half the story, the truth of the matter is that Terry wanted to transfer to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers (RDF), to join mates already in that regiment and had put in a request that had been turned down. He therefore took matters into his own hands and, after a spell of leave spent in Portrane, instead of returning to his regiment, he went to the Recruiting Office where he joined the RDF’s using his Mother’s maiden name of Doherty. So while it is true that in the eyes of the authorities he had deserted; from the RIR’s, there can be no doubt that this was a desertion in name only. Once in the RDF, Terry was posted, seemingly as a stretcher bearer, to the 9th Battalion, part of the 16 (Irish) Division, and proceeded to the Western Front where the battalion had been since December 1915. The Battalion War Diary for July 1917 records that Terry was awarded the Military Medal. While we will never know for sure, the likelihood is, that the medal was awarded for something that Terry did during the Battle of Messines the previous month but that notification was only received in July. The following month, the battalion was in action again, this time at the Battle of Langemark, a three-day engagement (16, 17 and 18 August), that was part of what has come to be known as Passchendaele, and on the second day, the 17, Terry was killed in action. His body was not identified - he has no known grave but is

remembered on the Memorial to the Missing at Tyne Cot. A month after his death, on 17 September, 1917, the award of his Military Medal was announced in the London Gazette. As well as the Military Medal, Terry was also entitled to the British War and Victory Medals, and these along with his ‘Death Plaque’ were all sent to his father, and over time appear to have been passed out among his brothers and sisters families. The ‘Death Plaque’ is held by Terry’s niece Nancy Dempsey (nee Dockrell) and his British War and Victory Medals, after apparently being ‘missing’ for many years, have now resurfaced in the hands of his nephew, John Dockrell (both Nancy and John still live in the Burrow). The Military Medal was given to Terry’s youngest brother, James, who in turn passed it on to his son, a college professor, who lost it when moving from a job in Canada to a new one in Edinburgh. A few weeks ago, I was contacted by a collector of WW1 medals to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who had seen the entry for Terry on my website about Donabate & Portrane soldiers in WW1 (http://dpitgw.webs.com/) and who had recently acquired Terry’s Military Medal from a dealer in Toronto. Photos were provided for Nancy, and so while the medal in not back in their possession, at least the family now know where it is and that it is being well looked after.

FLAVERING FINGAL

Louise Coughlan samples the Flavours of Fingal Festival

Once again the Flavours of Fingal was a big success and this year it was a free event with a reasonable €5 parking fee. A fun weekend for all the family, it started on Friday evening with live music, followed by the major event on Saturday and Sunday within the grounds of Newbridge House. Now in its sixth year, Fingal County Council, Fingal Farmers

Group and Fingal Tourism got together to create family entertainment. The best part was the kids area with big inflatable bouncy castles, my kids had a ball. We treated the family to donuts and coffee from one of the many vendors dotted around the place. To keep the children entertained there was an arts and crafts table and also face painting which went down a treat. Just

beyond the inflatable area was the Supermilk Wild Air run. For those of you interested in cars and tractors, the Flavours had Vintage cars and many tractors on show. There was an agricultural display of livestock and many equestrian shows and competitions. In the courtyard area, a stage was set up and Cobbe’s café were busy serving teas and coffees to customers. As the family strolled around the walled gardens it was great to see the many stalls selling their arts and crafts. In order to cool down on a hot summer’s day, a craft beer village were selling their selection of beers. The whole weekend combined the sights and sounds of a traditional show with a fantastic family and food experience. Woolly Wards petting farm arrived to the delight of the children in the big village barn and everyone loved the sheep dog trials as well as the magic shows and living history displays. Within the walled gardens celebrity chefs got to work with cookery demonstrations. Just beyond the House there was a Great War Society World War display and real live Viking re-enactments as well as jousting and Falconry displays. A World War hospital and soldiers and tanks were on display, I even got to hold a war pistol. With so much to do and see, the Flavours of Fingal was a great weekend for all the family.

Paul Mulville, Independent councillor for the Swords local electoral area, has highlighted the new arrangements for the Donabate Portrane Garda satellite clinic, which has been running in Donabate Portrane Community Centre. “There has been a change in arrangement for the Donabate Portrane Garda satellite clinic taking place in Donabate Portrane Community Centre,” he said. “I understand that the numbers attending the morning clinics were quite low, and as such, there are new arrangements for the evening time on a trial basis.” The Community Garda team has now scheduled two evening summer clinics for Thursday, August 10 and Thursday, August 24, both from7pm to 9pm. “Direct contact can be made as always with the Community Policing Unit at Swords Garda Station on 01-6664700. The local Community Garda team is concerned however that if too few people attend the evening clinics it won’t be continued with, as the Garda members would be better deployed on other duties,” he concluded

Ingredients • 600g Meat of your choice cut into pieces such as: chicken, beef, pork or tofu • Vegetables of your choice such as: Red onion, peppers, courgette, mushrooms • 1 tin coconut milk • 4 tablespoons smooth peanut butter • 2 tablespoons curry paste • Juice of 1 lime • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 5 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped finely • About 5cm ginger, peeled and chopped finely • Small wooden skewers Tip: use whole coconut milk as the light versions mainly consist of water and won’t give the nice creamy, smooth consistency for the Satay sauce!

“The smell of BBQ in the air just tastes of Summer but if you haven’t managed to see much of the BBQ so far, maybe this recipe will inspire you to heat up the grill before the weather starts to chill!! This dish is relatively easy and definitely one that the whole family could take pride in! You will probably have most of these ingredients and you will be able to use them up in so many other recipes. Mix the ginger, garlic, curry paste, peanut butter, soy sauce, honey and lime juice together. 2. Stir coconut milk into the mixture bit by bit and mix well to create a creamy smooth consistency. 3. Add the meat/tofu and chopped vegetables to 2/3 of the satay mix. Keep the other 1/3 of the satay as a dipping sauce! 4.Leave the mixture to marinate for up to 3 hours in the fridge. 5. Thread the meat/tofu and vegetables onto the skewers. 6. Grill the skewers for approximately 15 minutes, turning occasionally. Dip into the sauce saved from earlier. 7. Heat any leftover mixture on a pan until the meat and veg is cooked and serve with rice, noodles or oriental salad.
