Editor’s Note It May be a sunny month!

The beginning of May is associated with the Celtic festival of Bealtaine. This marked the start of the season of blossoming flowers and fruit trees. It’s good news for the majority of people but for those with a pollen allergy May sees grass pollen counts rise (all the way through to August!). The first Monday of May became a public holiday following the Public Holiday Regulations 1993 Act. The holiday was first observed in 1994. Introduced by Ruairi Quinn, it is thought by many as a day to celebrate Ireland workers but that is not the case officially. Japanese workers, however, have it made - there are four holidays between April 29 and May 5. They call it ‘The Golden Week.’ May marks the start of Summer and the restart of the weather debate with older people recalling the blistering heat of 1959, 1968, 1975 and 1976! Records show that, since 1880, May is the best month for sunshine. While it is impossible to predict accurately what this May is going to be like, the people at Accuweather.com took a stab at it - they reckon we’ll have just one sunny day, 25 cloudy days and 4 days of rain. Keep the raingear handy and hope for the best!

Mobile Artists Sought

Fingal County Council’s Arts Office is for Artists and Curators to take part in a short term residency opportunity - between July and September - at Lynders Mobile Home Park, Portrane. Artists, curators and academics will spend week long periods at the mobile home park gathering, processing and engaging with the local area and it’s people. The week long residencies focused on process, sharing of findings and the incubation of new projects. The Resort Revelations programme provides the resident an opportunity to return to the area and present new work during the local Bleeding Pig Festival at various locations in Portrane. Speaking about the residency opportunity Caroline Cowley, Public Arts Facilitator, Fingal County Council said “What stood out from the 4

experience of previous participants was the wealth of history, beauty of the area, and the willingness of those from the area to engage with the residency programme. This year we have an opportunity for a limited set of residencies, which continue to offer the successful candidate the opportunity to explore and consider their practice within this unique and supportive context.” •A fee of €500 euro will be provided for the week long period •The Mobile Home is located at Lynders Mobile Home Park, The Quay, Portrane, Fingal, Co. €20.4m for local housing

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell, has said the allocation of €15.5 million to the Donabate Distributor Road which will provide 1,200 housing units by 2021, and €4.9 million for the Oldtown Mooretown road upgrade, allowing for the development of 800 housing units in the same period, will assist greatly in catering for social and affordable housing demand in the North County. “I am delighted with the allocation of €15.5 million for the Donabate Distributor Road, and €4.9 million for the Oldtown Mooretown road upgrade from the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government. “This funding allocation will allow for the development 2,000 housing units by 2021, with 1,200 of these resulting from the investment in the Donabate Distributor Road project, and 800 being provided under the Oldtown Mooretown road upgrade project. “However, the potential exists for the development of 2,200 housing units from the Donabate Distributor Road project, and 3,200 housing units from the Oldtown Mooretown road upgrade project in the long-term. “Such is the need for the development of housing in the North County, and across the country, that it is essential that the on-going use of a collaborative approach between all relevant bodies is maintained,” he said

Fingal Students benefit from grant changes Fingal County Council students who are less well-off, and those taking a second chance at college, should benefit from changes to the education grants scheme, according to local Independent Alliance Cllr Tony Murphy The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone, has informed Cllr Tony Murphy that the changes are aimed at making college more accessible to all. A total of €380m is being made available in grants nationwide. Announcing the changes Minister Zappone said: “It is only right that everyone should have an equal chance to avail of third level education - no matter what their financial circumstances.” The key changes include: Maintenance grants to support 1,100 of the most disadvantaged postgraduate students and changes which allow second chance mature students to complete a post Leaving Cert Programme within a 5 year break period. The Grant Application Process is also opening up earlier than usual to allow students extra time to consider options and submit their forms. Cllr Murphy has welcomed the additional funding and has encouraged all students to take time to consider the supports which are available and come forward and use them. Ardgillan Celebrates 25 Years in Fingal

When Robert Taylor, the grandson of Oliver Cromwell’s chief cartographer, Thomas Taylor, bought the Ardgillan estate in 1737, he had no way of knowing that two presidents of Ireland would visit his magnificent manor hundreds of years later. Ardgillan Castle is celebrating its 25th anniversary on the weekend of May 13-14, and the event has been kick-started by President Michael D. Higgins with the planting of a tree in the park, twenty-five years after former President Mary Robinson performed the same task when the castle was first opened to the public in 1992. In the intervening years Ardgillan has become a dynamic community amenity for local people from all over the North County, Louth and Meath with its wide open spaces; magnificent gardens; state-of-the-art playground; variety of castle events and dog-friendly café. The most exciting aspect of the Ardgillan demesne is the location. Set in rolling parkland overlooking the Irish Sea with squirrels bouncing all around the place it certainly feels like it is a set from a Disney movie. The Taylor family occupied the castle up to 1962 when it became too expensive to maintain and it was sold to a German industrialist. Dublin City Council bought the estate in 1982 and the castle was opened to the public in May 1992. The castle is now owned by Fingal County Council 8

and it is managed by Ardgillan Castle Ltd. under the auspices of the Council. Today, in keeping with the Disney theme, hundreds of children from the area have had their childhood memories shaped by the fun and games that they have found throughout the demesne, including leprechaun and Easter egg hunts, children’s parties, a unique fairy trail through the woods, visits to Santa, the superb playground, negotiating the huge climbing wall, paintball target shooting or just rolling down the undulating landscape. Adults are also well catered for with tours of the castle, Afternoon Tea in the sumptuous Drawing Room, wedding ceremonies, archetypal Tea Rooms, art, sewing and ballet classes, a wonderful walled garden, conference and meeting facilities, Paws at Ardgillan - the only dogfriendly café in a municipal park in the country - and any amount of forest walks. Ardgillan Castle is celebrating being open to the public for 25 years on Sunday May 14th The free celebrations, suitable for all ages, will include; Living History Re-enactments in that Castle, Traditional Craft Demonstrations in the Courtyard and Entertainment in the Marquee.

The Living History events include: A Grand Ball - Music & Dance - The Dancing Master leads the steps of Country Dances, etc., for a party of 10 elegant ladies and gentlemen who will be glad to help you join the cotillion. The Music Man - While the Quality have their dances upstairs, downstairs make music of their own, with tunes from Carolan, and traditional pipes and harping. The Domestic Arts - Cook rules the 18th century kitchen; cooking, needlework, spinning and weaving to taste and try. Children’s Games - Pall-Mall, skittles, quoits, spinning tops, cup-and-ball; all very different from today’s pursuits! The Barber-Surgeon - 18th century medicine at its very worst! Get your teeth pulled, bloodletting and hair cutting performed with equal skill (not really!). The School Master - he will teach the unlettered to write with a quill pen and explain how to keep a record with tally sticks. The Blacksmith - Hear the ring of the anvil as the blacksmith plies his trade. Traditional Craft Stalls will include Pottery, Basket Making, Embroidery, Wool Spinning, Lace Making and Wood Turning

Free Services for Self-employed Self-employed people in the North County can now benefit from free dental and optical exams through the Treatment Benefit Scheme for the first time. That’s according to Fine Gael Dublin Fingal TD, Alan Farrell who has welcomed the move by Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar to extend these PRSI benefits to 450,000 self-employed people and their spouses across the State. “The Treatment Benefit Scheme covering free dental and optical exams has been restored to employees, and crucially is now also being extended to self-employed people for the first time ever. “This means that small business owners farmers, tradesmen, freelancers, contractors and professionals in North County can now benefit from this Scheme for the first time. “People who work for themselves and pay PRSI at class S can now get the same regular dental and optical examinations, free of charge, that until now were only available to employees. They can also get a grant for hearing aids of 50% of the cost, to a maximum of €500 per aid, every four years. “Many small business owners in Fingal have spoken to me in the past about the fact that they were not entitled to State

supports, compared with PAYE employees. We all know that successful small businesses are more likely to create jobs, thereby increasing the opportunities for job seekers in our local towns and villages. Supporting the self-employed is good news for the whole community. “I was also pleased to hear Minister Varadkar confirm that more benefits are to come and we will look to further strengthen supports for the self-employed. “This will include the restoration of scale and polish treatment under the dental scheme, and the option of free spectacles or a contribution towards a more expensive pair under the optical scheme. The past division between employees and selfemployed people will be eradicated as from now on, the restoration of benefits such as these will be available to both groups here in the North County. “Minister Varadkar will also make the invalidity pension available to self-employed contributors who cannot work due to long term illness or disability. This will be a really welcome move for self-employed people here in Fingal who, for the first time ever will have that security if they are unable to work.

A man, a tub and a dream

Most mornings Robert Dowling with his physical trainer, Dinny Collins, can be found Donabate Gym getting into top shape for his next ambitious project - the first-ever Atacama Desert circumnavigation (all 4,000 sq miles of it). As if that were not enough of a challenge he’ll be lugging a bathtub with him around the Bolivian

desert! But first he has to locate the tub - nicknamed Sheila - as it has gone missing after climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. He’s travelling back to Tanzania where he plans to buy some livestock - a living reward for information - and search for a month. “Very simply,” says Robert,

“no bathtub, no challenge.” Madcap as it may seem Robert has already recovered ‘Sheila’ after she went missing for nine years around the Brazilian and Columbian border. For more details on this strange and fascinating story - Google ‘dubinatub’

Donabate Portrane Tennis Club, which started as an idea in 2013 amongst a few tennis enthusiasts, is now a growing reality. Located on the grounds of the Donabate Golf Club, there are four flood-lit all weather pitches and a growing membership of over 360. There is a very active social scene – both social and competitive tennis, for adults and juniors, coaching programmes for all levels, competitions and more.

DCC Spring Fair

The Club attended the Donabate Community College’s Spring Fair - an annual event organised by the Parents Council, with all funds raised on the day going towards the Wellbeing initiatives at the College. Members volunteered on the stand and ran some free coaching and demos for juniors on their courts. Donabate Portrane Tennis kicked off the Easter Holidays with an Adult Mixed Doubles tournament. ‘Bear-illiant’ teddy bear treats

Method Ingredients • • •

40g Rice Krispies cereal 120g Nut butter (eg. peanut, almond, cashew etc) 2 tablespoons linseed (flaxseed) or sesame seeds (or both!) 2 tablespoons natural liquid sweetener eg. Agave/maple/ date syrup or honey

A Teddy Bear’s picnic in the back garden, going on a bear hunt or even a treasure trail in a park are all ‘treasure-ific’ ways to get fresh air and be active and healthy!! To decorate:

1.Place rice Krispies and seeds into a bowl. Add the nut butter and natural sweetener and mix well altogether. 2. Divide the mixture into 8, roll with your hands into a ball and squish down a little to make a flat pattie! 3. Cut dark chocolate diagonally at the corners to make triangle shapes for the ears and nose. Cut the prunes in half. Make the mouth shape with one half and cut the other half in half again and roll into small beady eyes!! 4. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes & enjoy as they “Snap, Crackle and Pop” !!!

Noticeboard & Parish News Bealtaine events in Donabate-Portrane Community Library: A screening of the film Brooklyn

A screening of the film Brooklyn takes place on Friday 5th May at 2.30 pm. Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters star in this romantic drama adapted from the novel by Colm Tóibín. Set in the 1950s, the story follows young Irish woman Ellis Lacey as she travels to New York City in search of a better life. Initially homesick, she begins to adjust to her new surroundings with the help of Italian-American Tony Fiorello with whom she becomes romantically involved. After news of a family crisis, Ellis returns to Ireland where she enjoys spending time back in her hometown and becomes acquainted with a young man, Jim Farrell, finding herself torn between two very different paths. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture and won the BAFTA Award for Best British Film.
