Editor’s Note April - Time to Rise!

If March centres around St. Patrick’s Day, April is when we begin to appreciate that Spring has really arrived - the temperatures rise (as do our spirits!) and the days begin to have a bit of length in them once more. For those who figure Winter is a time to stay indoors, April offers the chance to get out and about again, to enjoy taking a bit of exercise without fearing frostbite and, with a bit of luck, fewer children to hose down after their various mucky escapades :) In a way April is when we come out of hibernation, start planning various events with a fair hope that weather will not stop play, think of various DIY projects - maybe even carry some of them through - and check the finances to see if a Summer holiday will be possibility. While the origins of some of the names of our months are clear ( January, for example, comes from Janus, the Roman god of ‘openings and beginnings’), April is somewhat of a mystery. It may derive from the Latin word ‘aperire’ (‘to open’) in the context of the season when trees and flowers begin to bloom, but it is also possible that April is derived from the Greek or Etruscan goddesses, Aphrodite and Apru. As always thanks to all our readers and of course the businesses for all your support. Let’s work together to make it better!

Your Guide To Easter Fashion

As Easter approaches our thoughts run to Bunny Eggs and Easter Bonnets so what’s in and what’s not for kiddies fashion this year? Well pastels are Huge, mint green, orchid pinks and soft blues are definitely the go to palette for 2017. Remember Easter weather will call for gorgeous dresses but don’t forget the cardies. A soft cardi is a must buy for this time of year and if will get plenty of use for our unpredictable summers. Best colours are white and pink of course!! Don’t forget light or sheer tights, as positive as we can be they are essential for getting wear from Spring dresses. Don’t buy sandals too soon, a little pump will bring you further.. leave the sandals till May/ June. Boys will need to layer up too, you can’t go wrong with a long sleeve polo shirt. Cobalt blue and yellow are great colours for Easter but classic navy and reds are the perfect combo if you’re not feeling brave enough for yellow. Gilets are a great option for our Spring season and if it’s chilly add a “dressy” hoody. Jeans are a perfect weight for Easter so invest in a new pair in washed blue as they will bring you right through to Autumn. Again Cobalt and Mediterranean blues are the fashion colours for boys trousers and will team up with all colour tops so if you fancy a change ... go blue! For older girls a nice Denim or Leather jacket is a great transitional piece and will work equally well with leggings, jeggings and tunic / legging combos . Easter is a traditional time to ditch the winter woollies, hats and scarves so fingers crossed Easter hats will make an appearance and we can say good bye to the Winter Wardrobe!! eShopWorld Brings 250 New Jobs to Swords Alan Farrell TD says he is delighted at the announcement of 250 new jobs for Fingal. “Our unemployment rate has fallen from a high of 15.2% in 2012 to just 6.1% today - I am delighted that eShopWorld have chosen the capital of Fingal to further invest in their Global HQ in Swords. This investment is an expression of confidence in our community, our skilled workforce and our economy as a whole. “This investment will bring their total employment to over 400 by the end of 2019.” The company, founded by Tommy Kelly, started with just six employees in 2010 and has grown to 150 personnel in the last seven years, mainly based in Swords. The new high skilled, technical development and R&D positions will further enhance eShopWorlds ability to cater for over 200 countries in its portfolio. Recruitment for these position has already commenced.

Locallink Fingal, Louth and Meath Local Link provides safe secure and reliable Public Transport services in local and rural areas of Ireland. The aim is to provide safe, reliable and secure bus transport services in Rural Ireland. The mission statement of the original Rural Transport Programme, is ‘to provide a quality nationwide community based public transport system in rural Ireland which responds to local needs’. Local Link’ is the brand name for the organisations delivering the Rural Transport Programme nationally. At a national level, the Rural Transport Programme is managed by the National Transport Authority. In 2017 the National Transport Authority will continue to identify improvements in existing services and developing appropriate new routes based on the budget of €15.9m (includes €1.5m from Department of Social Protection). Over 40 new additional rural transport services are currently being examined by the Authority to be delivered across the State this year. Key features of the new service developments include greater integration with existing public transport services and better linkage of services between and within towns and villages. At a local level, in Fingal, Louth and Meath, the original Rural Transport Programme companies are now pooling their experience, knowledge, resources and competence across their respective counties to deliver excellence in rural public transport services and passenger experience, care and comfort. ‘ In Fingal specifically, two new Locallink services are due to come on stream in mid-April 2017. These are • Balbriggan, Millfield, Naul, Balyboughal, Oldtown, Garristown and onto Ashbourne. • Knocksedan, Swords Manor, Brackenstown Road, Main Street Swords and Pavilions Other proposed routes for the area are also under consideration/development at the moment such as a package of routes centred around the Fingal train stations, accessing tourism sites and local parks. The theme of the initiative is ‘Trains and Tourisim’.

Spring on the Country Crest Farm By Nicole McPadden, Student at UCD As a Food and Agribusiness Management student in UCD the opportunity of a work placement at Country Crest was one I could not afford to miss out on. The first thing that stood out to me was the state of the art cattle shed, designed and engineered to the highest animal husbandry and the nuturing of the cattle, which shines through in the quality of the beef being produced. In an era where consumers are concerned about knowing where their food comes from, Country Crest prides itself on producing its own cattle fodder of silage, maize, wheaten straw and potatoes. With the weather picking up, the time for cattle to head to pasture is growing closer. The tillage season will soon be in full swing, preparation of feed stocks for next winter, and planting of potatoes and onions. With the beef being sold at the Country Crest Farm Shop, alongside products from local artisan producers and growers, the shop is a place I can only describe as a treasure trove of premium produce. The knowledge that I have gained here will stand to me in my future career. One of the most notable things I will take with me from the large scale of Country Crest is how simply it boils down to the true meaning of a successful family run business, steeped in tradition and values, using farming knowledge gained from generations on this farm, and continuing to grow and embrace innovation while staying true to it’s grass-roots.

Mayor of Fingal on the run! Politicians, as a rule, are not noted for their fitness levels. One exception is Councillor Darragh Butler, Mayor of Fingal 2016/17, who has completed all five of the Fingal 10k (Swords) since 2012 and is looking forward to completing a sixth this July. “I’ve never really been fit, so the joke each year is that my training for this year’s event was completing the previous year’s event,” he notes. “Being a Councillor I never made much time for running or exercise outside of this. So for me, Parkruns are an excellent idea and a great opportunity to have something structured. Without Parkrun I would probably go back to doing no exercise at all,” he says. “Back in 2015 I was walking at River Valley Parkrun in Swords at an Operation Transformation event, when someone approached me to tell me about the then new Donabate Parkrun at Newbridge House. “A few months later I completed my first Parkrun in Donabate and to date I’ve completed 11 Donabate Parkruns and 10 River Valley Parkruns and I hope to complete many, many more over the coming months. “I would strongly recommend Parkrun to all. It’s a great way to start your weekend, to possibly blow off a bit of steam after a busy

week at work, or to simply get out and enjoy a bit of exercise with friends and members of your community, whether you want to run, walk or a combination of both. No pressure, just go at your own pace and enjoy yourselves and make new friends from your community along the way. “Please also take the time to volunteer every now and then as these events would not exist without volunteers. In this regard I would like to particularly like to thank Elaine and Sean for Donabate Parkrun and Bryan and his team for River Valley Parkrun. “Fingal County Council have six excellent Parkruns: Porterstown Park; Hartstown Park; Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan; Malahide Castle; Newbridge House, Donabate; and River Valley, Swords. There is also an excellent Junior Parkrun in Rush every Sunday morning that my son Adam loves completing every weekend. Over the course of March, April and May I hope to set up a challenge to complete all six of the Fingal Parkruns and anyone who wants is invited to join me.” You can join up with the Mayor to walk, jog or run at Malahide Castle on Saturday, April 29; Hartstown Park on Saturday, May 13 and at Rivervalley, Swords on Saturday, May 27.

Something fun for everyone at Drogheda Arts Festival 2017 Something fun for everyone at Drogheda Arts Festival 2017 Drogheda Arts Festival (24 April- 1 May) marks the beginning of the summer in our region. For this year’s exciting programme, Louth Contemporary Music Society present a special commission, the world premiere of The Louth Work, by composer James Dillon; there are two Irish Exclusives in the form of Thor and Friends and a Bank Holiday Sunday night DJ Set by Terry Hall, as well as a special rehearsed reading by award winning actor Judith Roddy, of poems by three of the world’s greatest poets of the last 150 years. There will be theatre for both adults and children and special musical performances across many disciplines. Variety will be key. From the sublime (Upstate Theatre Project) to the ridiculous (Fanzini’s Circus Jukebox); from the traditional (Maighread & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill) to the contemporary (Maggie Madden and Sharon Olds); not to mention the classic (Graffiti Classics, Bronte, Bram Stoker). There will be spectacular street performances by the River Boyne and the annual ‘mini festival’ at Beaulieu House & Gardens, and a new short film festival evening & film quiz presided over by the acclaimed actor, Karl Shiels (Fair City). It’s the perfect time to plan a day trip to Drogheda, the cultural capital of the Boyne Valley.

A Red Letter Date for Your Diary Award-winning author and playwright SP McArdle will be staging her magic history adventure, 1916: The Red-Letter Play, in Naomh Barrog GAA Club on Easter Monday, April 17. The play is adapted from the finale of her magic children’s book ‘The Red-Letter Day’. It was described by The Sunday Independent as one of the Sunday Independent’s best children’s books of 2016, described in their Christmas gift guide as: ‘A brilliantly imaginative romp through key points in Irish history, featuring fun adventures with fascinating people.’ Can time-traveller Jenny the Adventuress and her guide O’Flahertie (who might just be a famous writer!) save the day for the Proclamation of the Irish Republic? A top actress (whose name is under wraps for now) will play the lead role of Jenny the Adventuress and the other main part is O’Flahertie (yes, Oscar Wilde). Donabate Portrane Tennis Club is a hive of activity with lots to offer for all ages and abilities! Located on the grounds of Donabate Golf Club, there are four all-weather floodlit courts. The club recently had some very special visitors from Cambodia! Two teachers and two students from PEPY Empowering Youth spent time at both DPETNS and Donabate Community College. PEPY is a Cambodiabased education and youth-leadership nonprofit organization. DONT MISS - Tour De Fingal! St. Pats Tour de Fingal Cycle takes place on Saturday, June 17, starting at 9am. It begins and finishes at the Club’s home grounds in Ballymastone. The exciting part for 2017 is that there is a choice of distance to cycle either a 50k or a 90k. The 90k distance will suit cyclists with a bit more experience while the 50k distance is aimed at cyclists who prefer a shorter distance or indeed for novices and first timers. The entry fee is €40 per participant (for whatever course you decide to cycle) and like the previous St Pat’s cycles, the emphasis is on participation, fun, inviting friends and meeting new ones. 14

The club has held two very successful cycling events within the last few years and this one promises to be hugely popular with the addition of the 50k option. Now is the time to dust the cobwebs off the bike and get going with your training plan to get the kilometres into your legs! St. Pats GAA, Donabate, have announced their series of Juvenile camps for 2017. A three-day Easter Camp is being run this year from April 11-13aimed at Primary School Children aged 5-12. The 5 Day Cúl Camp runs from July 10-14 for children aged 5-12. The Mini All Ireland caters for children born 2003-2011 split into four sections: Academy (2010-2011), Junior (20082009), Intermediate (2006-2007) and Senior (2003-2005). It’s a local Football Tournament with 5 evenings of games culminating in a Final Day on the last Saturday. More information on these events and

all that’s happening in St Pats is available on their website, their Facebook page StPatsGAA or from info@stpatsgaa.com St. Pats welcome everyone to join them at their camps but if you’d like your child to get involved on a more regular basis, they cater for all levels. Their Academy is tailored for boys and girls born 20102012. From that level up, they have boys’ teams at all ages and girls’ teams at every second year. The Juvenile Section is the club has been flourishing recently and continues to thrive. A very progressive Club, their current pitch development projects and future plans are catering for their increasing membership.

1. Cook the sweet potato and mash. Cook the various vegetables. 2. Add the salmon to the sweet potato mash and mix together. 3. Shape into balls or use a cutter to make shapes. 4. Dip the balls into the egg and cover them. 5. Dunk and roll the balls in breadcrumbs. 6. Fry off on a pan until the outside of the balls start to brown and become crispy. 7. Make faces on your fish cakes using the cooked colourful vegetables. Bain taitneamh as the ‘rays’ of laughter, flavour and the family all aboard ar an mbord!!!!
